Summary

Each week a different magical pattern appears inside a treasure chest somewhere. Give it to Guttrix and he'll reward you.

Walkthrough

UNDERSTANDING THIS QUEST

First of all, you will talk to Guttrix in Lower Jeuno. At any given time, only people of a certain race and gender can do this quest. When you speak to Guttrix he will tell you the current race/gender, and the area you must go to. For example, he may say that the current week is Male Hume, in Ordelle's Cave. This will change each Vana'diel week (8 real hours.)

FYI - Let's say you are Male Hume and it's your Vana'diel week. You have a key and are searching for a chest, but your time runs out (let's say it switches to Tarutaru Female) before you find one. When you open that chest, you will not get the magical pattern. However, if you open the chest during your race/gender's time and obtain the magical pattern, then you are safe. You can bring this pattern to Guttrix at any time and receive one of the pieces of your RSE.

Now, you need to go to the area and find a chest. There is only one chest at a time, and it will spawn randomly in one of several different spawning points. Once you open it with the proper key, it will respawn within 5 minutes or so at another random spawn point.

That brings us to the real meat of this quest:

  • Finding keys.
  • Finding the chest.

Note that you do not need this quest active to find a key. However, the keys (like all keys) are Rare Items - you can't carry more than one at a time.

Once you open the chest, you will receive a Magical Pattern. Again, this is Key Item - you can only carry one.

FYI - Yes, thieves can pick these chests and they will receive the pattern. Of course, you will still need to run back and forth to Jeuno each time you get one.

Bring this pattern to Guttrix, who will offer you your choice of the 4 RSE pieces. Repeat.

TIPS AND INFORMATION

The following information is copied directly from Anonymous's post. It's organized so well already, there was no point in reordering it, so I've dropped the whole thing right here in the hopes that more people will see it. I'm disappointed the poster was anonymous -- if this is you and you would like some credit, please let me know and I'll be happy to put your name up here.

Check out Shigun's post, 'Quest Information' for some very essential links. You should absolutely print out the treasure map (more later) for whichever dungeon you plan to visit. The online timer is also very useful in planning your excursion.

  • The quest is fame based. There are different theories on how Jeuno fame is calculated.. what I can tell you for *certain* is that attaining more fame in any other city will add to your fame in Jeuno in some way. The rough estimate of 40-50 total quests completed seems about right to me. Repeating a quest over and over again *does* count.
  • The goblin will tell you what magical pattern is available on any given week, and where it is. * The pattern will be in one of three dungeons, and can be found in a treasure chest. You need the maps available thanks to Shigun's post to reliably find the chest.
  • At any given time, only one chest exists within each dungeon. While its exact location is random, it will always be in one of 15-20 possible spots. See maps for this.
  • You need a key, unique to each dungeon, to open a chest in that dungeon. The key is a rare drop. You will hear a lot of information regarding which mobs drop the key. The truth is that almost any of the higher level mobs in each dungeon can drop the key. Some appear much more likely to drop than others.. but I have gotten keys off of mobs that "do not drop the key".. It REALLY pays to have a theif with you to help with key drops.
  • Unlike some keys.. this one must be traded with the Chest to open it. Once you open the chest, the key is gone, and you will need to find another one. Keys are RareEX..so you can only have one at any given time.
  • Once the chest has been opened, it will disappear. If it was opened by someone undergoing this quest, it will respawn in another location *immediately*.. there is little to no delay. However, if some unkind soul opens the chest purely for looting purposes, and is not there for Racial Gear.. it can take up to 30 minutes to respawn. So please be nice and do not open the chest unless it is your turn for Racial Gear.
  • If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, or do not have the quest active, and attempt to open the chest, you will not receive the magic pattern.
  • The magical pattern needed to get a piece of racial gear is a Key Item. This means, once you have gotten the pattern, you need to return to the goblin in Jeuno before you can get another. He will let you choose which of the four pieces you want.
  • At any given time, only one Race & Gender is elligible to receive Racial Gear. For instance, he may tell you Elvaan Male armor can be found at Ordelle's Caves. This means.. no one except for an Elvaan Male can receive the magical pattern. In other words.. there is NO FARMING. You can't get anybody else's armor. And you can only get each piece once. Once you have received all four pieces, the quest will end, and cannot be repeated.
  • This period of elligibility will last for one game week, or approximately 8 real hours. Unless you are experienced and very well prepared, you will have trouble getting four pieces in this amount of time. Once the week is up, you need to wait 7 game weeks before you can try again (generally about 2-3 real days). The quest will cycle through each race/gender in sequence. It helps to know the sequence, as well as the sequence of the eight days in a vandiel week. See the online clock in Shigun's post.
  • The three dungeons are not of comparable difficulty. One is significantly harder, and one is significantly easier. I do not want to completely spoil the quest for ppl who have done their homework.. but suffice it to say that some scouting/exploration/key hunting *before* your racial gear is available is highly recommended.
  • The time restriction of one game week applies only to finding a magical pattern. Once you have the pattern, however, it can be turned in at any time for a piece of armor. So, if you are pattern-hunting in a dungeon, keep trying until the very last minute.
  • American players tend to get very competitive, and maybe even a little rude ( /em recalls players refusing to give him a Raise) during this quest. This really isn't necessary guys! Everyone can get a piece of armor much faster if you play cooperatively. Just remember, as soon as one player opens a chest, a new chest will appear immediately, and that play will not be able to get another piece until they run back to Jeuno. So, be nice please!
  • A note on Racial Gear: generally speaking it will not have the best DEF of the armors available to you. It will have a lot of boosts to your stats. Whether these boosts help you are not depend on what you do for a living. The armor is designed to account for the weakness of each race. So, Tarutaru get huge boosts to HP, for instance, while Galka get huge boosts to MP, among other things. If you are playing a somewhat unorthodox character, or have a casting class as your subjob and need more MP, this armor can be very useful. If you are a tank, or pursuing a job your race is naturally well-suited for.. it may not be for you.
  • As for appearance.. it looks *exactly* like the starting, newbie armor you had when you first created your character, except that the colors will be all new. The ones I have seen all look nice to me, but what do I know?

Has anyone ever failed this quest? As in what happens if you accept the quest and do not complete it within the time frame? Can you start it again? I want to make sure I can actually GET the quest before I assemble a helping party.
RE: Question
# Feb 16 2004 at 10:12 PM Rating: Default
This quest is active until you finish it by getting all 4 pieces...once it's finished there's no repeating it. The armor is sell-able (you can see the different pieces in the AH) but once it's gone you'll have to buy it back if you want it back. Prices were about 50K+ gil per piece on Unicorn server.

To sum up, it's not possible to fail this quest--just like you can't fail the Chocobo quest--you just won't get the armor unless you do it correctly.

Which dungeon is best to do this quest in? (Especially for someone around lvl 35 to solo)

I'd have to Gusgen is hardest cause of the difficulty of the mobs. Ordelle seems the easiest except for the stupid bats that agro by the beetles. Don't know about the maze. Tried it once and a ghoul ran from across the screen and killed me cause I was low on hp. If answering please keep in mind chest locations, not just mob difficulty...Thanks
RE: Opinions?
# Feb 09 2004 at 4:21 PM Rating: Default
I wouldn't plan on trying to solo ANY of the RSE locations at lvl 35. Get a party or a high lvl to help you.

IMO, Gusgen is the best place for RSE questing because the chests are the easiest to find. Sneak is enough to get you past most mobs in the map, most of which are undead.

Really though, get a thf and a high lvl to help you.
RE: Opinions?
# Feb 23 2004 at 6:56 PM Rating: Default
I solo'd 2 of my pieces when I was level 33. If you take the back entrance to the maze you can get right into the area with the key dropping mobs. But I am a RDM also so I guess that made soloing easier. The caterchipillars were pretty easy, I wouldnt mess with the gobs though.

Well, I went to Gusgen (taking your advice) at lvl 36 (well, half of it) and started killing pugils in the way back of the caves which checked easy. After I'd find a key, I'd slap on sneak and invisible and was able to find the chests within about 15 minutes after obtaining the key. I did this 3 times in Gusgen and would definitely have to agree with you that Gusgen is the easiest when it comes to finding chests. Thanks for the help!

I was in Ordelles today and I didn't aggro anything. I'm lvl 30 and everything but the Stropers conned EP, the Stroper was a T. There are a TON of EPs in there though so you can get swamped easily. If you've got like 2-3 people in a group its easy.

You didn't agro, but the monsters still do agro at lvl 30. The shkiekers in the pond room with 3 possible locs agro at 30, so do all of the goblin in the areas where you need to go to find chests/keys, but most are easy and you can solo one, maybe 2. In the toughest area where the stropers are, the stropers and all gobs will agro you, and you cannot solo them at lvl 30. Unfortunately there's 7 possible chest spawns near the stropers, and these monsters have the highest chance of key drops, along with goliath beetles.

For those who say you need to do quests in all the cities, you're lying or very misled.

My starting city is Sandoria and i've done zero quests in Windurst, Bastok and Jeuno. All i've done is the simple quests in Sandoria and practically traded in every rabbit hide and bat wing i found (which is quite alot considering i leveled 6 jobs in west ronfaurre). Went to check the gob last night and he gave me the quest.

OK listen hear foos. :P
Heres the low down. Do hella quests in the town your from. I didnt do ANY quests in Jueno when i got the RSE quest (besides the delkuft map quest, which you foos also said you needed fame for. And ONE quest wouldnt be enough fame to unlock it). Anyway, I know where and when to get the quests and i have an ENGLISH link to the rse times. (i know, im the best)
Those times are in CST, so add or subtract hours depending where you are from. And guess what? I even know what to kill!

Ordelles= Goblin Smithys, Pathfinders, and
Furriers, and Stropers. In order to get
to them you have to go to this place
where there are holes in the ground.
Drop down the south hole and the
southeast hole to get to what you need
to kill.

Maze of Shakrhimi= kill Wights.

Gusgen Mines = kill Pugils (there are some
other mobs you have to kill but
I forgot their names =/)

Now that you have the keys find the chest yourself, or give in and ask JP. :) I can't tell you anything else or I would ruin the fun :)

Who do you owe all of your success to? Well Tri of course! :D

If you use thief tools to open the treasure chests, do you get the pattern? If so this will just be a formality of me riding the chocobo back in fort and finding a chest spawn.
RE: Thief tools
# Feb 08 2004 at 9:45 AM Rating: Default
Yes you WILL get the pattern if you use theif tools to open the chest as long as you are in the right dungeon on the time of your race and you have the quest. I know it works cause I got my RSE with the tools
RE: Thief tools
# Feb 08 2004 at 4:05 PM Rating: Default
I also got Magical paeeterns using Thief tools. you just need to find a Treasure Chest, and open it using tools just as you would a key.
NOTE: ONLY characters with main job as thief will be able to use Thies Tools. Characters with thief as support job will NOT be able to use the tools.

Final Note: Thief Tools DO NOT have a 100% chance of success, So Bring along an extra 2 or 3 tools just in case. In fact Buy a Stack of 12, One stack is 8k on Fhenrir, while a single tool is 2k, do the math :) Thief tools are always useful, ep when farming lower lvl mobs that dont usually drop keys and find a Treasure Chest.

Days of the Week

Hi,
according to my understanding, this quest will last for one week for each race/gender (7hrs?).
If so, that means it will always change to a new race on the same day of the week. Does anyone know what day of the week it starts/ends? By my estimation, the first day of a Vana'diel week is Firesday, and the last day of the week is darksday.
I think the order of the days is as follows: Firesday -> Earthsday -> Watersday -> Windsday -> Iceday -> Thundersday -> lightsday -> Darksday.
I'm not sure about the spelling of those days, but I'm almost sure that is the order (yes 8 days a week).

I also believe that the order of the race/gender is as follows. Elvaan male -> Elvaan female -> Tarutaru male -> Tarutaru female -> Mithra -> Galka -> Hume male -> Hume female.

So if this information is correct, that means if you check what day it is, and what race/gender the current quest is for, you could figure out when it will be the correct time for you. I put down all this information because the virtual vana'diel timer at http://www.manakun.com/hari/ does not apear to give enough correct timing, and it does not hurt to know this anyways, as you may be in the middle of the quest and wondering how much time you have left etc etc.

So if there is anyone that can verify this information, I would highly appreciate it, and I'm sure others will as well.
Thank you very much (^_^)
RE: Days of the Week
# Feb 08 2004 at 10:28 AM Rating: Default
each quest lasts for 7 hours and 40-41 minutes. the quest doesnt end until the time your quest started, so if you started at 16:00 on firesday then it wouldnt end until a week after at 16:00 on firesday

and also, Shiri posted the website about the time/race for RSE as follow too.

Anyways here is a list of what can drop the Ordelle's Chest Key:
Goblin Furrier
Goblin Smithy
Goblin Shaman
Goblin Pathfinder
Stropper
Goliath Beetle
Stropper Chyme

The Goliath Beetle has highest chance to drop for the keys.

And IF the chest is opened for the magical pattern it INSTANTLY respawns, if its opened for treasur ethe spawn time is 30min.

The link to clock is www.manakun.com/hari

When you bring back the magical pattern you are given the choice of gear to get, only get one at a time and cant get the same one twice. Thois leads me to beleive that you can get the apttern and wait for ythe right time to trade it in (not gonna risk it myself tho).

Hope this helps everyone, and please if you find my posts helpful rate them ^^

*edit* I will have maps with all the chest locatoins marked soon

just a minor correction, once you get the magical pattern...you can turn it in whenever you want, does not matter. And since you can't get the magical pattern unless you opened the chest at the correct time, then it stands to reason that once you get the pattern you are home free (until you go back for the next 3 ;).

Jeuno fame is sum of your fame in Jeuno plus the lowest fame in the three starting cities. So having 75 quests done in Bastok isn't going to do squat for you if you have 3 done in Windurst.

Seems like you need to be rank 3 too, or at least can't be in the middle of a mission. Friend of mine has done 32 uniques in WH, 15 in Sand, 2 in "Outlands", 6 in Jeuno, and the last time he went to Windurst filled up their entire inv (with the exception of a weapon that's 29 items) to do repeatables, and still can't get the quest from Guttrix. My total was 30 in Windurst, 6 in Jeuno, 4 in Sand, 2 in outlands, and i'm sure i've done a little less than 30 repeatables, but I just got my first RSE item a few mins ago. Only other difference between us is I have rank 3 and he's still only done the First part of 2-3.

OK, so I talked to him and he told me Elvann female pattern in Gusgen mines. Does this mean I can go get that at anytime? Cause when I talk to him again he just says Go away. I'm trying to find the date for the human male pattern. My question is, does the "weeks to get" the patterns apply to accepting the quest or opening the treasure boxes? So do I have to get the Elvann female's pattern, or get I wait til the day the human pattern is available and go open that treasure chest?
RE: Accepted Quest
# Jan 27 2004 at 12:14 PM Rating: Decent
its based on the opening of chests, when you find out the "week" of the pattern you want, goto that place and open the chest for that pattern. you got one game week to do get the item before it changes
week starts on firesday and ends on darksday (it does in the order top to bottom left to right as the elements apear in your equipment menu)
