Summary

Each week a different magical pattern appears inside a treasure chest somewhere. Give it to Guttrix and he'll reward you.

Walkthrough

UNDERSTANDING THIS QUEST

First of all, you will talk to Guttrix in Lower Jeuno. At any given time, only people of a certain race and gender can do this quest. When you speak to Guttrix he will tell you the current race/gender, and the area you must go to. For example, he may say that the current week is Male Hume, in Ordelle's Cave. This will change each Vana'diel week (8 real hours.)

FYI - Let's say you are Male Hume and it's your Vana'diel week. You have a key and are searching for a chest, but your time runs out (let's say it switches to Tarutaru Female) before you find one. When you open that chest, you will not get the magical pattern. However, if you open the chest during your race/gender's time and obtain the magical pattern, then you are safe. You can bring this pattern to Guttrix at any time and receive one of the pieces of your RSE.

Now, you need to go to the area and find a chest. There is only one chest at a time, and it will spawn randomly in one of several different spawning points. Once you open it with the proper key, it will respawn within 5 minutes or so at another random spawn point.

That brings us to the real meat of this quest:

  • Finding keys.
  • Finding the chest.

Note that you do not need this quest active to find a key. However, the keys (like all keys) are Rare Items - you can't carry more than one at a time.

Once you open the chest, you will receive a Magical Pattern. Again, this is Key Item - you can only carry one.

FYI - Yes, thieves can pick these chests and they will receive the pattern. Of course, you will still need to run back and forth to Jeuno each time you get one.

Bring this pattern to Guttrix, who will offer you your choice of the 4 RSE pieces. Repeat.

TIPS AND INFORMATION

The following information is copied directly from Anonymous's post. It's organized so well already, there was no point in reordering it, so I've dropped the whole thing right here in the hopes that more people will see it. I'm disappointed the poster was anonymous -- if this is you and you would like some credit, please let me know and I'll be happy to put your name up here.

Check out Shigun's post, 'Quest Information' for some very essential links. You should absolutely print out the treasure map (more later) for whichever dungeon you plan to visit. The online timer is also very useful in planning your excursion.

  • The quest is fame based. There are different theories on how Jeuno fame is calculated.. what I can tell you for *certain* is that attaining more fame in any other city will add to your fame in Jeuno in some way. The rough estimate of 40-50 total quests completed seems about right to me. Repeating a quest over and over again *does* count.
  • The goblin will tell you what magical pattern is available on any given week, and where it is. * The pattern will be in one of three dungeons, and can be found in a treasure chest. You need the maps available thanks to Shigun's post to reliably find the chest.
  • At any given time, only one chest exists within each dungeon. While its exact location is random, it will always be in one of 15-20 possible spots. See maps for this.
  • You need a key, unique to each dungeon, to open a chest in that dungeon. The key is a rare drop. You will hear a lot of information regarding which mobs drop the key. The truth is that almost any of the higher level mobs in each dungeon can drop the key. Some appear much more likely to drop than others.. but I have gotten keys off of mobs that "do not drop the key".. It REALLY pays to have a theif with you to help with key drops.
  • Unlike some keys.. this one must be traded with the Chest to open it. Once you open the chest, the key is gone, and you will need to find another one. Keys are RareEX..so you can only have one at any given time.
  • Once the chest has been opened, it will disappear. If it was opened by someone undergoing this quest, it will respawn in another location *immediately*.. there is little to no delay. However, if some unkind soul opens the chest purely for looting purposes, and is not there for Racial Gear.. it can take up to 30 minutes to respawn. So please be nice and do not open the chest unless it is your turn for Racial Gear.
  • If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, or do not have the quest active, and attempt to open the chest, you will not receive the magic pattern.
  • The magical pattern needed to get a piece of racial gear is a Key Item. This means, once you have gotten the pattern, you need to return to the goblin in Jeuno before you can get another. He will let you choose which of the four pieces you want.
  • At any given time, only one Race & Gender is elligible to receive Racial Gear. For instance, he may tell you Elvaan Male armor can be found at Ordelle's Caves. This means.. no one except for an Elvaan Male can receive the magical pattern. In other words.. there is NO FARMING. You can't get anybody else's armor. And you can only get each piece once. Once you have received all four pieces, the quest will end, and cannot be repeated.
  • This period of elligibility will last for one game week, or approximately 8 real hours. Unless you are experienced and very well prepared, you will have trouble getting four pieces in this amount of time. Once the week is up, you need to wait 7 game weeks before you can try again (generally about 2-3 real days). The quest will cycle through each race/gender in sequence. It helps to know the sequence, as well as the sequence of the eight days in a vandiel week. See the online clock in Shigun's post.
  • The three dungeons are not of comparable difficulty. One is significantly harder, and one is significantly easier. I do not want to completely spoil the quest for ppl who have done their homework.. but suffice it to say that some scouting/exploration/key hunting *before* your racial gear is available is highly recommended.
  • The time restriction of one game week applies only to finding a magical pattern. Once you have the pattern, however, it can be turned in at any time for a piece of armor. So, if you are pattern-hunting in a dungeon, keep trying until the very last minute.
  • American players tend to get very competitive, and maybe even a little rude ( /em recalls players refusing to give him a Raise) during this quest. This really isn't necessary guys! Everyone can get a piece of armor much faster if you play cooperatively. Just remember, as soon as one player opens a chest, a new chest will appear immediately, and that play will not be able to get another piece until they run back to Jeuno. So, be nice please!
  • A note on Racial Gear: generally speaking it will not have the best DEF of the armors available to you. It will have a lot of boosts to your stats. Whether these boosts help you are not depend on what you do for a living. The armor is designed to account for the weakness of each race. So, Tarutaru get huge boosts to HP, for instance, while Galka get huge boosts to MP, among other things. If you are playing a somewhat unorthodox character, or have a casting class as your subjob and need more MP, this armor can be very useful. If you are a tank, or pursuing a job your race is naturally well-suited for.. it may not be for you.
  • As for appearance.. it looks *exactly* like the starting, newbie armor you had when you first created your character, except that the colors will be all new. The ones I have seen all look nice to me, but what do I know?

I just completed this quest solo as 45 THF and also utilising my 42 WHM in Ordelle's Cave for Hume Male. I cannot stress the importance of planning ahead for this. I went a couple of days early to get myself a chest key to have a bit of a head start and I also got maps for all the 13 possible spawn points for the chest. Then I got up early this morning (6:15 am!) for the start of the Hume Male week.

I first went in as 42 WHM/BLM so that I could sneak/invis as some of the mobs in there were easy prey to me, which of course meant aggro. And as a WHM that's the last thing I wanted!

After the first RSE pice was obtained I went back as 45 THF/WAR armed with 2x THF tools and an Instant warp Scroll (very easy to forget this scroll). The THF tools were excellent and the next two pieces were very quick to find.

For the last piece I decided to hunt another key as the THF tools cost me about 4100 Gil each from an NPC vendor in Sandy. This key was a ba5tard to find! I spent over an hour fighting Goliath Beetles (the lowest level mobs to drop the key I believe AND supposedly the best drop rate too) before I got one.

I was a bit lucky in that there is one spawn point deep down at the bottom of one of the maps which was crawling with EP gobs even as 45 THF, but the chest didn't spawn there for me at all.

After doing this quest I pretty much know Ordelles Caves like the back of my hand. And it was good to see Stroper Chymes wandering about totally unclaimed for once!

Ok, i found a few mistakes on this quest page so i thought i'd share.

first off, the time your gender appears in not random. it goes Hume M, Hume F, Elvaan M, Elvaan F, Tarutaru M, Tarutaru F, Mithera, Galka. i also think the location goes in order but i'm not sure about that

sencond, there are 8 days in a Vana'diel week.
Fire -> Earth -> Water -> Wind -> Ice -> Lightning -> Light -> Dark. this of course acounts for all the elements

hope this helps.

If you are doing the quest during your Race/Gender time, every time a Magical Pattern is removed from a chest, the chest will respawn in another random place every 5 min, unlike the 30 min for an item chest.

I got all my RSE gear today all in one period of the Taru Male RSE week. It was great. I did pretty well considering i did it all by myself asking for teles to get to the Maze of Shakrami and warping back to Jeuno when necessary. I got the keys and found the chests relatively quickly.

(May I say thank you for the guide above. The map and guides on which enemies to kill and where the chests can be was a HUGE help.)

Also, this quest can get annoying after getting a couple but it is very nice equipment and I just decided while Im doing it I might as well finish the whole quest. I suggest u do the same if possible. It feels very good to get it over with when u r done and know u got it all. Great stuff. The defense lacks, especially as u get higher in lvl, but it is very useful. Good luck on your RSE.

I was in the Maze this weekend during Taru Male RSE, and found the chest. /shouted to see if anyone needed it, and oddly didnt get an answer.

I remember spending HOURS looking for the chest when I needed it for my own RSE, and now that I have it I see them all the time. Lol

Congrats on yours!

Yea you need fame... Do about 40 quests not in all nations, in any nation. You can do 5 in Bastok, 25 in Sandy, and 10 and windurst. Then do about 5-10 in jeuno and you'll get quest. Thats what i did

Well, yesterday, my girlfriend (galka 37 warrior) and i (taru 37 rdm/blm) did this quest for my RSE pieces. It took us 4 hours for us to get all the pieces. Then we went today to get her pieces and the keys would not drop... Our drop rate for keys (fighting Mauthe Doog's in Gusgen Mines) was about 1/8 on average yesterday (NO signet...) and today we fought over 100+ Mauthe Doog's and got ZERO keys... (WITH signet)... I asked a friend and they said that signet had nothing to do with it. It was all moon. Yesterday was near New Moon and today it was about 40% and rising. Which is it? Regardless, the change in drop rate is insane.

strategy for getting these items
# Jun 06 2005 at 12:55 PM Rating: Decent
wow, so ever since i got incredably lucky and got a key while camping stroper chyme with my LS a LONG time ago and then used it to get my gloves without any help i have been trying to get my boots. My 1st 3 attempts sucked, i waited till it was my week(inevitably late at night >.<) each time and then, if i was lucky, got an LS member to help me. If not, i just shouted for help(this worked once). My escort and i then proceded to the dungeon and started killing stuff(in other words, i sat around while he/she killed stuff). Each time i used this strategy, i didnt get the key and after about 2 hours my escort had to leave. This process took me about 3 months bacause i dont play as often as most and my week is often during the day when i am not at home. After three depressing trips i wised up. My new strategy was to look ahead at the ffxi timer and find out where my next week would be. Then, when i was available i asked for help getting the key from these locations and then i would use the key when my week arrived, thereby elliminating the wasted time of getting the key during my week or trying to fond help during my week. I used this strategy twice over a two week period, 1st in ordelles(i just missed this week, got home at 22:30 dark day >.<) and then in shakrami. My week in shakrami was last night at 9:30 and i thought, "well, i have the spawn locations from a map i got on the net and so i should be able to get in and out of there in a matter of a half hour". WRONG, one of the best peices of advice for ppl trying to do this quest is to familiarize yourself with the area beforehand, especially if you dont use this strategy because you will be under a more strict time limit. In addition, if you do not use this strategy you should also familiarize yourself with the locations of the mobs which drop the keys beforehand. Anyway, i got in to the maze from the tahrongi side and swept the areas where the chest was supposed to spawn according to my map. No luck. I had to do it again and bacause the locations for some of the chests are on the buburimu side(check the ones on the tahrongi side first) i had to zone and walk all the way to the tahrongi entrance again to do another sweep. I did 2 sweeps and tols myself i would only do it once more. Before you give up, you should be aware that the chests take 5 mins to spawn if someone of the correct race open it but 30 mins if someone else does so dont give up! To end the story, i found the chest on the last spawn point w00t.

I have completed this quest by obtaining all 4 RSE pieces so it shows up in my 'completed quest' section but I have two questions:

1. Can I get the quest again if I get rid of one or more RSE piece?

2. Is it possible to keep getting the same piece and selling it as long as you haven't completed the quest(ie., obtained all 4 RSE pieces)?

same answer and also, you can only get each piece once, after you get one, the gob will only give you the option of getting one of the pieces you dont already have

easy way to get RSE
# May 16 2005 at 4:17 PM Rating: Decent
I found the easiest way is to /shout in lower Jeuno for help. I offered to pay 5k for each pattern. The first time I did this, I got a 52 PLD/WAR who helped me get 3 pieces in Gusgen before we ran out of time. A week or so later, I /shouted again with the same offer, and got a 72BLM/36WHM who helped me get the last one in the Maze. Both times, I went as a 26 WHM/BLM so I could sneak/invis through the mines without drawing hate. (Even though I have MNK at 36 and WAR at 32, I didn't go with those so I could avoid drawing aggro with sneak/invis). With a high level person along to beat up mobs for the key, it doesn't take long at all. I would recommend that your high-level help either be a mage or a PLD, so they can Raise you if the need arises (ie invis wearing off at the wrong time and you get aggroed by several undead...it happened to me on the third trip to Gusgen)

This was really easy. I suggest to go with help. Whm and a Blm. set HP in lower jueno. then when u get pattern, simply have blm (lvl 40 or greater) warp 2 u to jueno. also warp 2 whm. that way whm can tele back to closest crag. makes it much easier. if blm wants he can solo stuff til u get back... increased chance of getting keys quick. if your a thf it goes quick, get warp scroll and tools for chest. simply find and open chest with tools, warp back, buy another warp and get closest crag tele in jueno (offer up like 1k or more, everyones got a price)

i did this in like 2 hrs with a 66 whm/blm and 67 sam. however i did prepare a day ahead of time setting hp in jueno and getting a key for the area i was gonna be in. so first pattern just involved finding chest. used warp scrolls and found a whm in jueno that warped me to dem all 3 times. best choice, if u can find one whm that can warp u, chances are they will do it again if they are in town. hope this helps or encourages u

I can say that this quest was easy ONLY because I had awesome help. Got all 4 patterns/pieces in less than 4 hours - thanks to the heroic assistance of one who is destined to be the greatest SAM ever. ;) I went as 32THF/16MNK, took THF tools and warp scrolls, and had to quest in Shakrami Maze. I used the map from this site and was thankful it had been posted. I didn't have to kill any mobs for keys since I had tools, though I think one dropped from a Furrier at some point.

It really went smoothly - 56SAM would clear the area and I would pick the lock on the chest. Then I'd warp back to Jeuno and turn in the pattern while he scouted for the next chest. Thanks to my tele limo driver - I forgot your name already >< - for sending me back to the Crag each time so quickly. I'd run back into the maze and rejoin my SAM who had found the next chest by then - he'd clear the area and *poof* I'd pick another lock.

By the time we were on the 3rd chest we had some additional help (I should have written names down, but if you are reading this you know who you are and please know I am much appreciative!), so I was warped back without having to use my scroll. Patterned turned in, tele taxi to the crag, the fellas found the 4th chest while I was enroute, and *poof* 4th chest picked and pattern found. Less than 4 hours start to finish.

I know I would likely not have been able to get even one piece via Shakrami, let alone all four, without the help I received. Thanks to the three fellas involved that helped to make this go so fast and be so fun...especially my SAM. ;)
