Summary

Each week a different magical pattern appears inside a treasure chest somewhere. Give it to Guttrix and he'll reward you.

Walkthrough

UNDERSTANDING THIS QUEST

First of all, you will talk to Guttrix in Lower Jeuno. At any given time, only people of a certain race and gender can do this quest. When you speak to Guttrix he will tell you the current race/gender, and the area you must go to. For example, he may say that the current week is Male Hume, in Ordelle's Cave. This will change each Vana'diel week (8 real hours.)

FYI - Let's say you are Male Hume and it's your Vana'diel week. You have a key and are searching for a chest, but your time runs out (let's say it switches to Tarutaru Female) before you find one. When you open that chest, you will not get the magical pattern. However, if you open the chest during your race/gender's time and obtain the magical pattern, then you are safe. You can bring this pattern to Guttrix at any time and receive one of the pieces of your RSE.

Now, you need to go to the area and find a chest. There is only one chest at a time, and it will spawn randomly in one of several different spawning points. Once you open it with the proper key, it will respawn within 5 minutes or so at another random spawn point.

That brings us to the real meat of this quest:

  • Finding keys.
  • Finding the chest.

Note that you do not need this quest active to find a key. However, the keys (like all keys) are Rare Items - you can't carry more than one at a time.

Once you open the chest, you will receive a Magical Pattern. Again, this is Key Item - you can only carry one.

FYI - Yes, thieves can pick these chests and they will receive the pattern. Of course, you will still need to run back and forth to Jeuno each time you get one.

Bring this pattern to Guttrix, who will offer you your choice of the 4 RSE pieces. Repeat.

TIPS AND INFORMATION

The following information is copied directly from Anonymous's post. It's organized so well already, there was no point in reordering it, so I've dropped the whole thing right here in the hopes that more people will see it. I'm disappointed the poster was anonymous -- if this is you and you would like some credit, please let me know and I'll be happy to put your name up here.

Check out Shigun's post, 'Quest Information' for some very essential links. You should absolutely print out the treasure map (more later) for whichever dungeon you plan to visit. The online timer is also very useful in planning your excursion.

  • The quest is fame based. There are different theories on how Jeuno fame is calculated.. what I can tell you for *certain* is that attaining more fame in any other city will add to your fame in Jeuno in some way. The rough estimate of 40-50 total quests completed seems about right to me. Repeating a quest over and over again *does* count.
  • The goblin will tell you what magical pattern is available on any given week, and where it is. * The pattern will be in one of three dungeons, and can be found in a treasure chest. You need the maps available thanks to Shigun's post to reliably find the chest.
  • At any given time, only one chest exists within each dungeon. While its exact location is random, it will always be in one of 15-20 possible spots. See maps for this.
  • You need a key, unique to each dungeon, to open a chest in that dungeon. The key is a rare drop. You will hear a lot of information regarding which mobs drop the key. The truth is that almost any of the higher level mobs in each dungeon can drop the key. Some appear much more likely to drop than others.. but I have gotten keys off of mobs that "do not drop the key".. It REALLY pays to have a theif with you to help with key drops.
  • Unlike some keys.. this one must be traded with the Chest to open it. Once you open the chest, the key is gone, and you will need to find another one. Keys are RareEX..so you can only have one at any given time.
  • Once the chest has been opened, it will disappear. If it was opened by someone undergoing this quest, it will respawn in another location *immediately*.. there is little to no delay. However, if some unkind soul opens the chest purely for looting purposes, and is not there for Racial Gear.. it can take up to 30 minutes to respawn. So please be nice and do not open the chest unless it is your turn for Racial Gear.
  • If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, or do not have the quest active, and attempt to open the chest, you will not receive the magic pattern.
  • The magical pattern needed to get a piece of racial gear is a Key Item. This means, once you have gotten the pattern, you need to return to the goblin in Jeuno before you can get another. He will let you choose which of the four pieces you want.
  • At any given time, only one Race & Gender is elligible to receive Racial Gear. For instance, he may tell you Elvaan Male armor can be found at Ordelle's Caves. This means.. no one except for an Elvaan Male can receive the magical pattern. In other words.. there is NO FARMING. You can't get anybody else's armor. And you can only get each piece once. Once you have received all four pieces, the quest will end, and cannot be repeated.
  • This period of elligibility will last for one game week, or approximately 8 real hours. Unless you are experienced and very well prepared, you will have trouble getting four pieces in this amount of time. Once the week is up, you need to wait 7 game weeks before you can try again (generally about 2-3 real days). The quest will cycle through each race/gender in sequence. It helps to know the sequence, as well as the sequence of the eight days in a vandiel week. See the online clock in Shigun's post.
  • The three dungeons are not of comparable difficulty. One is significantly harder, and one is significantly easier. I do not want to completely spoil the quest for ppl who have done their homework.. but suffice it to say that some scouting/exploration/key hunting *before* your racial gear is available is highly recommended.
  • The time restriction of one game week applies only to finding a magical pattern. Once you have the pattern, however, it can be turned in at any time for a piece of armor. So, if you are pattern-hunting in a dungeon, keep trying until the very last minute.
  • American players tend to get very competitive, and maybe even a little rude ( /em recalls players refusing to give him a Raise) during this quest. This really isn't necessary guys! Everyone can get a piece of armor much faster if you play cooperatively. Just remember, as soon as one player opens a chest, a new chest will appear immediately, and that play will not be able to get another piece until they run back to Jeuno. So, be nice please!
  • A note on Racial Gear: generally speaking it will not have the best DEF of the armors available to you. It will have a lot of boosts to your stats. Whether these boosts help you are not depend on what you do for a living. The armor is designed to account for the weakness of each race. So, Tarutaru get huge boosts to HP, for instance, while Galka get huge boosts to MP, among other things. If you are playing a somewhat unorthodox character, or have a casting class as your subjob and need more MP, this armor can be very useful. If you are a tank, or pursuing a job your race is naturally well-suited for.. it may not be for you.
  • As for appearance.. it looks *exactly* like the starting, newbie armor you had when you first created your character, except that the colors will be all new. The ones I have seen all look nice to me, but what do I know?

if you have thf lvl'd USE IT. it was so easy once i decided to pick the locks. i did this last night in gusgen mines with my Hume 25thf/mnk. i spent all day as 42pld/thf trying in vain to get my first key to drop. i realized that at that rate, i'd be lucky to get even one piece of rse. so i grabbed a stack of thf's tools and silent oils total 15k. i used 4 keys and 8 oils and got 3 rse's in about an hour. (i have an ordelles chest key that i will use to get the last rse piece...)Gusgen mines is a great place to do this since most everything agro's by sound not sight (bombs are the only sight-agro mob i think) and there was no competition for the chests so once you find it, its yours. much easier to pick the locks than to try to get 4 keys to drop AND find teh chests. happy hunting! =)

Blue dots are chest spawn points, red dots are coffers.
You won't find any coffers in those 3 RSE locations though

I did the Hume quest at shakhrami yesterday,
I thought I would get a head start by getting the key the day before so I did and I got it actually.
Only problem was that the hunt for the chest wasn't as easy as I planned.
Lots of competition and camping and I was really about to call it quits after 4 hours of searching and dying twice (even deleveled).
when I died the third time I got a raise from a rdm who was also hunting for the chest.
He kindly offered me to help and we PTed for almost an hour together, after a while he told me he had to go as well so we diceded to go and search some other spawn points (you never know right?).
When we got to the first spawn point the chest was right there, used the key, got the item and traded it for the pants.
Okay I admit it was a pretty annoying quest but I'm pretty relieved I got the item nonetheless.
Also many thanks to Kamon for helping me out and sacrificing his own chance of getting his RSE piece. if you ever need help, I'm there.

Oh and seems like my GF also bought me the Tunic.
Love the gesture but it gives an int penalty so I'm afraid I'll have to pass since my main is BLM :(

Anyways that's how it went for me, those of you who still wanna do it, good luck and godspeed. ^^

Ok my story about Gusgen RSE is... pretty interesting lol...

Eventually I manage to get about 3-4 LS members to come along to hunt for keys. As I arrive there, Kraven and Tarean are already there looking for mining points and trying to get darksteel etc.

Tarean gets aggroed by a dog right after i zone in. "Kraven defeats the blah"
"You find a Gusgen Chest Key on the blah."

I'm like w00t! Now we gotta find a chest...

Tarean sees one right next to him...

2 things...
# Nov 04 2004 at 3:15 PM Rating: Decent
1) i love the mithrapride clock... 2) I really think that the key drop rates are MUCH higher on days of non-RSE: here's why>>> one day i decided to finally get keysz for the 3 areas, and started the day before my next RSE date. Ordelle's took me 12 kills to get the drop (off a gob furrier after killing several types). I got the Shakrami key in 5 kills (on my second Labrynth Scorp, also killed 3 wights). I got the Gugen mines key on my FIRST kill (rancid ooze). At the times of kills, there was no RSE going on in any of the places. In the Maze and Gugen, I killed for 3-4 hours after turning in the pattern when the day came up and never saw another key. I strongly recommend getting the keys in advance. I soloed all of it as a 48BLM/15THF. Hope this helps...
2.5 Hours!
# Oct 15 2004 at 12:48 AM Rating: Excellent
Today I was able to get my RSE in 2.5 hours, with help from a couple of LS mates (thanks guys!!!). We did it all in the Maze of Shakblahblahsomethingorother. I have a few tips/pointers for those of you tring to get your RSE:

1. Scout the area a day in advance. If at all possible, get a key for the chest a day in advance as well.

2. Bring along a friend! This helps you to find Treasure Chests and, more importantly, you can kill more mobs that drop the key!

3. Bring Warp Scrolls/Sub Black Mage/Bring along a Black Mage Warping to Jeuno saves a lot of time!

4. Set your homepoint in Lower Jeuno If you are rushing to get the pattern, this really helps when you Warp.

5. MOST IMPORTANT RULE Remember to restart the quest BEFORE you go to get the pattern! You must have talked to the Gobbie immediatly before setting out and heard him say that it is, in fact, your week to obtain your RSE!

In addition to these pointers/rules, please remember to bring along the appropriate items (prism powders, sneak potions, etc) if you are about level 30-38. Mobs will aggro!!!

Also, I may be biased since I am Windurstian, but I felt that the Maze was an extremely easy place to find the chests and obtain the keys. Its a very easy run from Jeuno to the Maze ^^

I wish you all happy Treasure Chest hunting, and good luck finding your patterns!

ADDITION: Print out Treasure Maps!!! Do not neglect to do this!

Totally not true. I started the quest once, and got all my pieces without him ever saying it was my week. The only requirement for getting a pattern is that you have the quest started and that it is in fact your time.

the only reason i would say check first is just to make sure it's still your week. I had a key in both gusgen and ordelle's... used em when i thought it was my week, turns out i found the chest 10 min after my week ended :( So make sure it's your week before you open the chest, not to reflag quest.

Ok im trying to get Hume Male Hands. But my Jeuno fame isnt high enough so the quest giver tells me to go away.

My question, what if i know the time and place and its Hume Male week, and i go to that place and find and open the chest. Will i obtain the "Magical Pattern" and if so will Guttrix take the pattern and will i complete the quest even though my fame wasnt high enough.

No.

If you don't have high enough fame to activate the quest then you will never get a magical pattern when a chest is opened.

It makes sense that one cannot complete a quest if one does not qualify to begin it in the first place.

# Oct 05 2004 at 12:31 AM Rating: Good
Well nobody has posted in here for a while but just in case someone is looking to build up some fame. Here's what I did. Basically it just revolves around having a repeatable quest. I used Bubbly Bernie in Bastok.

It takes a long time to do but since the quest is repeatable you get fame, and you get the 500gil reward each time you do it. If you already fish it's easy fame and great profit.

So instead of getting the typical "Scram small fry!" I now can get the Goblin Tailor quest.
Getting Key in Gusgen Mines...

I read on this list that the Gusgen Mines is the easiest place to complete this so I decided to target this place. My plan: get a key drop in advance so when Gusgen comes up for the Male Hume RSE I could run there quick, open a chest and get my gear.

Well...after a few nights trying to get a key drop in Gusgen I have some advice. My first attempt was to solo stuff since I read that anything can drop a key. I killed a ton of wendigos, bogys, dogs, etc. No key drop and after trying this a few nights and getting killed two times I started losing hope.

I then did shouts but no one wanted to help me. I finally got some higher level LS members to go in and assist and at the same time a 51 THF also joined in to help out. They all said how quick it takes to get the key.

We fought mobs FOR HOURS and still no drop. We even went for tough mobs all over the place. I thought the 51 THF would help with drop rate but no luck there. It was getting late then someone said to try the third floor and go for the flies up there. Guess what? In like 10 minutes we got THREE DROPS and a bunch of us were crying with joy.

My advice: go to the third floor (round room by itself) and kill flies with a good party. That seems like the only quick way to get a key drop in there....

My best experience was in Ordelle's Caves. I never got a key drop in the other two places, and I knew I was fighting the right mobs. In Ordelle's, the map layout is easy and keys can drop relatively fast. I was able to join a LS party where 3 of us needed keys/chests and 3 others were just owning stuff. All 3 of us got 3 pieces (including finding and opening chest, warping back, and coming back down) in just over 3 hours. I came back the next time it was in Ordelle's and soloed stuff as 45 whm and opened the chest for my final piece. Good times.

If you have all your taru rse gear and sell the body, can you now go back and get the pattern again?

or is it once you get all 4 the quest shuts off, i need space but don't want to sell the RSE if i can never go get it again on my own.

thanks.

if you have done the quest for the piece, you can never quest it again. If you want the piece again, you'll have to buy it. Sorry. You can check this by going to talk to the guy with a magical pattern. He will only offer to give you a piece you haven't quested already.

Agreed - if you view source on the web page, you'll see that it includes a script called timer4.js, which is JavaScript.

The script is most likely using your current clock date & time to calculate the number of seconds that have passed since the origin point and then following a set of algorithms to generate the current Vanadiel time, ferry schedules, etc. In Unix parlance, the 'origin' second is often called Epoch Origin - but basically it's an arbitrarily set starting time that all machines use as a common reference point.

I'm at work, so I can't verify the algorithm of the script this second, but that's how I would have written it (and I do write an awful lot of code).

If it was not client side scripted, it wouldn't be able to constantly update as it does. It's a nice script - thanks for passing on the link.

You must complete the quest once for each piece of RSE equipment that you are going for.

You must do the complete quest each time, as the Magical Pattern is a RA/EX item (you can't hold more than one at a time).

I just want to correct someone's post here pefore anyone tries it and gets pissed at him/her. You can't under any condition "own" more than one key. By own I mean, mog safe, storage, inverntory, etc. So If you own a key already and don't used it and another one drops for you, you will see the message. It will say something like...

<insert name here> has found a <insert dungeon neme here> key

and after some time you will see a second message stating,

<insert sucker's name here> does not meet the requirements to obtain <insert dungeon neme here> key

So If you get a key use it before getting another one. If you catch aggro and have to dispatch a mob and it drops a key you can still put it to good use. If you know that someone in the area is looking for one, /tell them quickly that you have one and to get their LFP flag up. Invite them pass on the key and let tehm lot. That is the only way that I know of to get some use out of it.

So don't waste your time trying to get another key drop if you already have had one drop and have not yet put it to use.

Not to bash, but this only occurs if your inventory is full and there is no spot for the game to recognize that you already possess a key. If your inventory is not full as you get the key as drop it will state You do not meet the requirements. <Item> lost.
