Fast way to do this mission,
1.Use a fishing bot when you sleep (i dont use bots so i wouldnt).
2. Buy the moat carp.
3. Ask friends to lend some carp.
4. Fish for them while wating for a NM to spawn.
Use a Fast water fishing rod and bug paste (not sure if its the right bait havent fished in a while), So now all i have to say is, Good Luck ^^!

Fishing in East Sarutabarua at Lake Tepo. with Little worms and whatever rod will net you....

ONLY MOAT CARPS.

10,000 Moat Carps for a fishing rod!? XO
Well at least you will get 100,000 gil, thats alot. Besides you get the suposely-best-rod in the game.
Also you get to increase your fishing skill alot.
BUT you would waste like 15 months (more than a year) only fishing , that is is you play only like a hour or so a day of this game like some people. Once again the question that apears before/after every hard effort you do: Was/Is it worth it?
I recommend fishing while adventuring, waiting for NMs to spawn, doing a quest, etc. so that you dont waste your time ONLY fishing for hours and hours to come. Also store every moat carp you come across to use when you get this quest(wich may be the most annoying quest EVAR).

Just as a small correction to your post that I want others to know: You earn 100 gil each turn in, and for turning in 10,000 carp you get one million gil overall, not 100,000; a slight difference there =p. You get fame too each time you turn in carp. I don't know how much, but I'm sure after turning in 10k you're bound to be high up there with them ^^. So, it's not a huge waste of time, and you get multiple rewards for doing it.

Storing carp is a good idea, though. I have a little plan to fish moat carp, sell any other fishes that I catch and use the money from them to purchase additional carp.

Oh yes... 15 months? That's a slight exaggeration. But you're right, it would take a while, and need quite a commitment to go through. If you were real devoted to the quest and say, fished up 10-20 stacks a day, that would take around two months. So, even then, a long time.

Well, I'll stop rambling now. I just thought I'd add on some input.

Negative. The reward has been nerfed to only 10 gil per carp. Hence, that 100,000 gil you get as a reward will be negated by the 125,000 gil you'll pay for paste to get 10,000 moat carps. (By the way, that's assuming every bite you successfully reel in a moat carp.)

This was changed in February. You're replying to a post from January, when it was 100g.

I'm not sure but I have heard that Moat carp cap at like lvl 11 so....if your only catching moat carp you aren't going to be lvl 70 by the time you are done with this quest.

Well, Moat carp have lvl 11 cap, but if you fish in the North Sandy or Port Sandy waters, you will also catch Tricolored and Gold Carp. Tri have a lvl 27 cap and Gold are somewhere near 51, You'll probably be lvl 40-50 fishing by the time you finish this quest if you fish them all yourself. I know I started at lvl 28 fishing, and right now am at 32 from the Gold Carp skill ups (and am only a small fraction of the way to 10000)

Hmmm... So just to clarify. I'm not sure what some of these posts are saying exactly. Do you have to hand in 10,000 moat carp one at a time or can you turn in multiple stacks at once in order to get the rod?
RE: Moat turn ins...
# Nov 28 2004 at 12:23 AM Rating: Decent
you can hand in up to 96 fish at a time

And the acquired fame is based on the gil reward. So for those worried about fame while doing this quest don't need to turn in one at a time. One moat turned in 96 times gives the same fame as 96 moat turned in once. Besides, do 5000 moats and you will have hero fame+. :)
im rich!!!
# Oct 14 2004 at 12:11 AM Rating: Decent
at the begining i started fishing...so i have a verry high lvl fishing (98 to be exact). so when i got the rod from moat carp i decided to re-do it with my mule......let me tell u it was HARD to do the same thing over. so i recently got my seccond shang rod so i sold it and sent the gil to my main and now i have 4 mil gil. (not all of it was from fishing)

You have 98 fishing and the Lu, then decide to get a second Lu, and then you sell it. Why did you do that? Just curious seeing how many better ways there are to make 4M with 98 fishing and the Lu...

Your problem is that you're fishing in a crummy fishing area and your fishing skill is very low. Fish out of town in places where you target both moat carp and a fish that you can skill-up on. My fishing skill is 56 and I'm still working on this quest.

So what is the best setup in Sandy then that will give me the best catch rate with little rod breakage? And is North Sandy moat the best?

I have been using the Taru rod with insect balls. My fishin skill is 10 right now.
Dunno.

the rogue rig can be purchased with your guild points or at the AH. I personally think it is more worthwhile to save guildpoints for the waders and/or apron as they will be more useful in the long run (though I can easily synth bait as opposed to buying for outrageous prices on the AH)

Another thing to clarify about the rigs:

1) The rogue rig is synthesized. I have yet to see the guide contractor offer me a rogue rig for points.

2) The robber rig is sold by the fishing contractor. 1500 guild points buys a robber rig. 1500 guild points does not buy a rogue rig, unless you pawn the robber rig at the AH and buy up a rogue rig.
Rogue rig

Let's get some things clarified about the rogue rig:

1) It catches one item at a time. Some people say that it can catch more than one, but the only rig that can catch up to three items is the sabiki rig. The robber and rogue rigs only catch one item at a time.

2) The rogue rig is only good at catching bottom feeders and items (e.g. rusty items). The rogue rig has a terrible rate at attracting regular fish like moat carp. In fact, the only "fish" that the rogue rig is decent at catching (pre-CoP) is the shall shell.
