Along with Lu Shang's, you get the key item, Testimonial, for doing this quest.

Testimonial:
Quote:
"This certifies that you have gathered no less than ten thousand carp. Please spend your time in a manner more beneficial to society. Your achievement is noteworthy for it's utter lack of meaning."

With heartfelt disapproval,
Gallijaux & Joulet

Nice one SE :) I got my Lu Shang's on my birthday this year. Makes me feel great about all the hard work I put into it. Lmao Oh well, here's to anyone else crazy enough to do this quest!! Cheers!

I could have sworn I read somewhere that he accepts other types of carp. Does anybody have a verification of this, or does he really only accept Moat Carp?

Thanks!

btw it's the girl NPC behind Gallijaux (Ufanne) that tells you actual number of fish you've turned in, not Joulet (his brother).
worthwhile for fame?
# Feb 21 2008 at 5:40 PM Rating: Decent
does anyone have an idea how much fame obtaining lu Shang's will get you?

For example, if you had NO fame in sandy, and then turned in all ten thousand carp, would it raise you several levels? I'm trying to gauge how worthwhile the quest would be solely in regard to fame.
Math a little off?
# Aug 22 2007 at 9:14 AM Rating: Decent

If it takes approx 833 stacks of moat carp to obtain the lu shang's..

with insect balls at 600 gil per stack ..

600 gil x 883 stacks of fish is just under 50k.

Thats 500,000k, not 50.
Math a little off?
# Aug 29 2007 at 7:39 PM Rating: Decent
I think you misunderstand o.O
k = thousand
50k = Fifty Thousand [50 Thousand]

So, what you just said, 500,000k, would be, 500,000,000...or 500 Million...

Anyway, 50k is 50,000 Gil, so the math was fine...

While his notation was correct, you did fail there as the calculation comes out to 529,800. Not 50,000. So he was right, just accidentally put the k afterward.
Way cheaper to fish it

Even with moatcarp only going for 3k on gilgamesh these days... there's no way that buying it with moat carp or buying it outright is cheaper than fishing it.

If it takes approx 833 stacks of moat carp to obtain the lu shang's..

with insect balls at 600 gil per stack ..

600 gil x 883 stacks of fish is just under 50k.

If you bought all those moat carps and turn them in at 3k per stack...

3000 gil x 833 stacks of fish = just under 2.5 million dollars for the rod.

Get a bamboo pole and and insect paste and fish a couple stacks in the morning before work at Knightwell pond and before you know it you'll have your rod.

I made a million gil just fishing carp on a mule. It couldn't be easier. And it's more stable than tele'ing or farming because there are no variables, it's always there, and the pond never runs dry.

It's without a doubt the best most stable money making endevor in final fantasy. Whether or not you do lu shangs is up to you.

I personally traded in half of everything I fished. That way i made money but i worked towards the rod as well.

When I have to work at night I catch around 600 fish a shift then at home fishing And I can teach you all how with this great technique I learned from the fish botters.

First you start a mule, You give that mule a fishing rod and 18 stacks of insect paste, You fish your days limit, You send all your fish the fishing rod to your host character, the one you want to get the rod and key item, You delete that mule and start another one, you go back to your host character and send them the fishing rod and another 18 stacks of bait... You all get my point.

Though I have to admit to you all that this is VERY boring and VERY hard on your patience as fishing at level 0 fishing is a lot harder then fishing on your generally higher skilled host character.

Been fishing for a rather short time in comparison with my new character on Remora and have nearly 4000 fish Can't wait to get this rod, No more damned moat carp and damned insect paste filling my inventory.

You don't have to delete the mule, you just switch off as one gets tired.

I've thought about this as well, but the time per day is just nuts, even if you don't fish to exhaustion each time.

# Feb 12 2007 at 12:10 PM Rating: Decent
I generally do this at work, that's 8 hours and takes me about 4 hours to fish up the cap for one character when doing it while working, Then come home and play for another few hours before sleep if people are not occupying my time, And still have to delete the mule since Both characters are at cap and want to fish more before bed.

I can't imagine wasting an entire day doing absolutely nothing but fishing, A waste of a day off I'd say since farming money might be faster if you can actively play and I can't really do that at work, dropping in a line then crunching some numbers is easy though :)

I'm a level 56 fisherman but still need 4000 more moat carp to get Lu Shang's rod. After I hit level 56 (Hume and/or Halcyon Rod in Windurst Waters catching Moats and Gold Carp for skill), I decided to search out a place where I could catch Moat Carp only. A friend advised me that the small pond in Rolandberry Fields was a Moat Carp only spot with a good bite rate. I always use insect paste for bait. Here's my results from a couple of nights of fishing at this pond.

Night One
11 Stacks of Bait (132 casts) yeilded 116 Moat Carp using a Hume Rod.
I cancelled all !!! (16) because they were monstors and I fished up 2 Rusty Subligar and 2 Rusty Leggins

Night Two
11 Stacks of Bait (132 casts) yeilded 105 Moat Carp again with the Hume Rod.

I do not know precise moon phase but first night was just after a full moon and the next night the moon was near 50%

Also, the first night I had more time to fish and I was able to catch 199 moat carp before fatigue set in.

I'm pretty satisfied with this spot, I'm using the Outpost Warp from the Marshlands to get back and forth between Windy and Rolandberry and Outpost Warp to Ronfare to turn my fish in.
I'd be interested in similar stats from Knightswell, I'm gonna try it with my Mule, fishing skill 5 and see if ratio of Moat Carp to Monster is similar.

My goal is to catch the remaining 4000 Moat Carp in Sept. and be back to skilling up fishing with a LuShang's Rod in Oct. Wish Me Luck.

I've actually had GREAT success with the lake in West Ronfaure.

With Halcyon Rod and 5 stacks of insect balls, came away with 4 stacks and 10 singles of moat carp. The other two were rusty items. I had about 3 monster/log hits, too, but I canceled and reeled in my line.

Good luck to all of us who attempt this insane quest!

Just an FYI: Items do not use up a bait, only Monsters use up a bait. Or if you snap a line/break a rod on a Arrowwood Log.

#REDACTED, Posted: May 05 2006 at 6:19 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) ok.. so ive been reading this thread. Ive noticed alot of math on what it would cost to by all the carp you need, but none on hoe lomg it would take to fish them all yourself. Asumming you have the patients to catch the 200 daily the math would go a little like this.

Better loop hole. If you have a mule, you can catch 200 on your mule too. One problem with this is that skilling catching the fish would be more tedious and time consuming on a mule. My mule with fishing skill of 1, cause that's all he's gotten from fishing up more then 100 carp. takes a while to real one in and then a long fight. I can catch 2-3 stacks in an hour. We're as my main with 23 fishing skill hooks one and reels it in a 3rd the time it takes my mule. So, if you have the patience to lvl your mules fishing skill to the moat carp cap. You can use that to fish 400, 600, 800, or even 1000 carp a day depending on how many mules you have.

But there is a loop hole. Since your count is reset midnight japan time it is possible to catch 400 a day depending on where you live.So keeping that in mind you would only have to spend 25 days fishing for these.

Actually it would take 50 days. From what I read, you're basically thinking that while living in the east coast of the US, you can wake up early fish up 200, wait for JP midnight fish another 200 for 400 total. Then go to bed, wake up and repeat.

You're forgetting that the next day when you wake up, the count is still active and you still have to wait for JP midnight, resulting in that you can only fish 200 before you go to bed.

not a very good money making quest. i hope the fishing pole reward is worth it. a little worm costs 4g, the quest gives you 10g per moat carp, thats only 6g profit. with the failure rate and the time it takes to catch each fish, fighting is still your best bet for cash even as a new player like me. perhaps there is a way to raise charisma to get them cheaper? not really sure what fame does.

Bastok
# Feb 18 2006 at 2:25 PM Rating: Decent
Best place to fish moat carp is Bastok Markets. There's no need to spend the extra money on insect paste because all you need is little worms. Less money + All the moat carp you can catch = Best Spot.
RE: Bastok
# Feb 20 2006 at 1:21 PM Rating: Decent
erm, not to my knowledge, but I'm not giving up my spot, but 23/24 catchs are moat carp, and I use yew rod, and I haven't broken one for months.

and little worms attract more than just moat carp, lol, like tricolour carp, crayfish, etc. lol

and insect paste, recomended bait, and yew rod, but don't fish in citys, you get large fish that will break your rod.

# Feb 20 2006 at 1:31 PM Rating: Decent
ouch at those price, 20k a stack.
lu shang rod will be expensive

10000 / 12 = 833 (9996 actually, but for this calculation we loose 4 fish)

833 x 20,000 = 16,660,000 gil

its cheaper to sell the carp and pay 10million for one, lol
thats the price on titan today, lol

you do realize this is one of the best fishing rods ig and it can be used to fish up very expensive fish very easily, right? It would make more sense to do this quest for the purpose of actually using rather than just selling the rod.

I fish these puppies all the time. And in my experience, there are really only two rod/bait combinations that can drag them up efficiently, and only two locations worth fishing at.

My favorite combination is the Halcyon Rod with Insect Paste at Knightwell Pond, which is in West Ronfaure. If you fish there with this bait, you'll get only carp. Which is a good thing. They bite on little worms too, but chances are that you'll get more crayfish than carp if you use that.

One thing about Knightwell: cancel ANY catches you get that end in ‘!!!’. It’s either a mob or an Arrowwood Log, both of which can snap this baby like a twig.

Halcyon Rod has a bonus for novice fishermen too: it's a composite rod, so it can keep that fish on the hook longer than a wooden rod can. That gives you plenty of room to perfect your technique.

The other combination that I've used is so-so. Hume Fishing Rod, Insect Paste, Windurst Waters. This rod's wooden, so you can tire the fish easier. But it can't hold it on the line for as long as the Halcyon, and Moat Carp aren't exactly hard to out-muscle.

The location’s good, because the zone for Port Windurst and the Fishing Guild is all of two feet away; that means easy access to bait if you can’t make your own.

But, the Hume Rod has a chance of breaking if you hook a Gold Carp or a Rusty item. (I think anyway. I snapped mine twice early on.) Which is unfortunate. On Carbuncle, Rusty Subligars are going for 10k in Bastok.

The Halcyon can reel in both with ease, and considering that I successfully snagged my first Gold Carp at level 9, that’s saying something.

I noticed that I skilled faster when using the Hume Rod, though. Not sure if that’s been professionally proven, but that’s what I noticed.

Oh well. That’s my two cents anyway.

Personally I would not call that efficient. Little worm go for 4 gil a peice, and if you have some skill in fishing (20+) you rarely catch crayfish.

Saying hume & insect paste is "so-so" seems a little off too me, wooden rods catch fish faster than synthetics. People want to get lu's as fast as possible, so wooden seems the way to go.

Gold carp have never been anything hard for me, I caught a few of them with lvl 3 fishing and no skill+ gear, my rod was bamboo. Rusty items are also not too much of a threat, in Windurst Woods (my fave town fishing spot) the only rusty items you seem to get are leggings and buckets, both of which won't break rods too easy. I pick woods because I find copper rings very annoying, and there is an items shop that sells little worms.

Too fishing my boring writing off, you were skilling up on hume rod faster because it tires fish faster and increases catch rate. For those looking for the fastest catch rate possible, try out a bamboo rod but I warn you, you should have fishing at 16+ otherwise the rod stands a good chance at breaking.
