Description

First talk to Yaya, who is near the Fishing guild, she tells you to go talk to Oswald. Oswald is found inside the Hotel.

Oswald has lost his favorite ring while at the pier one day. Unfortunately for Oswald, he knows where it went. Oswald's poor ring fell into the water, now lost forever. Or is it? A greedie fish, you see, has a penchant for swallowing shiny things, maybe one little greedie came along and swallowed it up. If that's the case, then fishing up the greedie will lead to retrieving the ring.

Indeed, that's all you have to do. However, it's not as easy as it seems. The greedie in particular you have to fish up is a Rare Ex fish called a Fat Greedie. Although Jimaida (inside the Fishing Guild) will offer to cut open any greedies you find looking for the ring, no greedie will contain the ring except the Fat Greedie. It has been my experience that you won't catch the Fat Greedie until level 10-11 fishing skill (you may get one at lower skills, but you won't catch many until 10 or 11), so the best bet is to raise your skill level somewhere where there is ample bait and a place to turn in fish for a decent sum until then. When finally fishing for the Fat Greedie, rarely do greedies bite on anything but lugworms, but ou'll want a Mid-Level (a very durable small fish fishing) Rod to catch it, as the Fat Greedie seems to seems classified as a large fish even if still caught with lugworms and a small catch rod.

Trade Zeldon the fat greedie for him to cut it open, he hands you an etched ring back.

Give the ring to Oswald for your reward.

I just want to point out, that I believe the game gives you luck on the first few lvls of fishing. I am not THAT high, only lvl 18 fishing, but I remember how easy it was to catch fish lvl 0-3 and then all of a sudden it got REALLY hard. Broken rods, no catches etc. etc. I think this is why we are hearing so many success stories from the low level folks while the higher levels are having a little bit more trouble. Not everyone of course, but the percentages seem to point in that direction.

I just did this quest, details are as follows:

Moon Cycle: New Moon 5%
Day: Darksday (when Fat Greedie caught)
Pole: Composite Rod
Bait: Worm Lure
Fishing Clothes: None
Fishing Level: 9
Location: Selbina Pier Dock

I was here for about 1.5 hours and walked out with 1.4 skill points, 2 stacks of greedies, 4 cobalt jellyfish, and 1 Fat Greedie.

At 46+4 fishing I sat on the shore of Selbina and caught greedie, cobalt jellyfish, and zafmlug bass by the rusty bucket full.

Then I payed 100 gil to get on the pier to the ship. On my first cast I pulled out the fat greedie. An LS friend said that he also caught the fat greedie on the pier. Not sure if this has any relevance to odds in catching it but wanted to offer it to any that are having difficulties with this one.

Good luck. ^^

Wow... this quest is all luck. I've been fishing for at least 2 hours with a composite plus minnow. My skill level is 21+4. I've gotten 3-4 skill ups, 30 greedies, 4 jellyfish, and 2 bass. No fat greedie. I remember awhile back I tried for an hour with a composite plus lugworms when my skill was probably in the early teens. Yet never a fat greedie. Grr....

Maybe they were on the "too small" catches. -_-

Edit:
Oh yeah.. and the moon is at 19% and waning so it's not a bad fishing time (as my greedie catches show).

Edit #2:
Wow.. I feel stupid. I realized that I had never flagged the quest to start as I had only talked to Yaya. I ran around talking to the other 3 people. I caught one on my third cast after Zaldon was flagged to cut open greedies for me. If anyone is having trouble, check to make sure you are on the quest.

Catching it on the third try after you logged the quest had nothing to do with logging the quest. You can catch the fat greedie at anytime. It's just a rare fish to catch. You got it easily IMO, it was much more difficult for me, fished literally for a few days realtime, not gametime.

I just caught the fat greedie with the following setup:

*glass fiber rod
*sinking minnow lure
*no Fishing gear (forgot to equip it)

got it on second cast.
my fishing skill is around .4 if that.

it's definatley random (or based on lure/rod as opposed to fishing skill.

Requirements for quest
# Jun 07 2004 at 1:28 PM Rating: Decent
I tried talking to yaya and I didn't get directed to talk to Oswald. I already have a Fat Greedie (caught it by accident - lvl 9 fishing with glass rod and lugworms) but I can't seem to get the quest.

Anybody know if there are any other requirements before you can start the quest?

Might be one of those rare circumstances where you cant get the quest if you've got the items you need for it already in your inventory. Try putting it in your MH and coming back.
Too bad it is not repetable

I just did this quest (lvl 34 fishing with full gear). It didn't take too long, only about 3 and a half stacks of lugworms. After I did this quest, two casts later I got another fat greedie. Is there any use for this item after the quest is finished?

Caught it in Selbina on first cast using a carbon rod and a minnow lure. Lvl 9 Fishing

Oh and a question If i have treasure hunter would that help in catching rare fish?

Quick update on this. I spent about half an hour fishing in selbina after writing this using the minnow lure and carbon rod. I caught 2 greedies and 4 fat greedies. I think minnow lure is the way to go.

Zaldon is the one that cuts the fish for you, but you have to talk to Jimadia first. ^^ Lota talking in this quest.

If it's a RARE/EX fish like this page says, how can you trade it to Zaldon? ;_;
RE: ?

You can trade 'ex' items and equipment to npc's.
Fat Greedie
# Apr 07 2004 at 4:39 PM Rating: Decent
Your fishing skill really doesn't have anything to do with whether or not you can catch Fat Greedie.

I've caught him before with a fishing skill of 1 so it can be done it's just a matter of luck.

# Mar 25 2004 at 7:18 AM Rating: Decent
i've been fishing for 4 hours here. i went from lv 11 to lv 14 fishing in that time. i used about 15 stacks of lugworms with my mithran rod. i have full fish/angler gear. i just caught my fat greedie at 00:15 on iceday and the moon is 95%. i also caught about 6 dozen fish before i got the fat greedie. i was starting to think it wasnt possible with a mithran rod. it just takes a bit longer is all ^^
