Summary

The wind blew away the sailor's cap that Paytah was minding for his father. You fished it out of the sea, but now it is torn and tattered. If you could only find someone who can repair Paytah's father's cap...

Walkthrough

Paytah is at the pier near the shopping piers.

(Level Requirement and Fame Requirement unsure. I didn't get this until Level 21, fairly high fame, and level 21 fishing skill)

I had passed by these two children several times, and each time they spoke to me it was about not talking to passing strangers. But one day, it takes a passing stranger to help poor Paytah in his time of trouble. Paytah's father's favorite cap has been lost to a gust of wind and has been blown into the water. A little bit of fishing skill is needed to fish out his poor father's cap, but when you do, fishing it out of the water has ripped it! Never fear, a ripped cap calls for a hat expert, go to Baren-Moren in the Waters district, he has to be able to repair it. Sure enough, Baren-Moren can fix the cap, but he'll need some fresh material to do it. Baren-Moren would require 4 Dhalmel hides to fix the rip (I think to myself, that's an awfully big cap...).

Dhalmel hides can be found on either Wild Dhalmel in Tahrongi Canyon or Bull Dhalmels in Buburimu Peninsula, but the preferred Dhalmel is the Wild Dhalmel, as it is considerably weaker than its bigger cousin. (and of course off of other players or at the Auction House)

Return to Baren-Moren with the hides, and he not only repairs the cap, he has plenty of material left over to make a Dhalmel Mantle (ah, that's what the extra hides were for...) that he happily passes on to you. Then return the repaired cap to Paytah, and the boy is so pleased he happily turns over a Leather Ring he doesn't need. Both items are pretty decent reward for around a level 18-20 character, or even sell at the Auction House well, so this quest is worth the effort.

As for fame not sure, I was probley about lvl 2 or 3 windy fame at the time
Not that hard...

Caught the Ripped Cap using a Halcyon Rod with Sabiki Rig on my 3rd cast. Fishing Skill = 3, Job = DRG lvl 43 and I wasn't wearing any special fishing gear.

Fishing next the chum chick at the end of the pier (Windy port) with a Hume rod and Sabiki rig, I have pulled this thing up like 6 times in the last half hour. My fishing it only at 2 and I had just recently bumped my Windy fame to 3.

Helcy. Pole > Stabiki Ring
Got one after about 3 Stacks of Quues and Sardines. ~ Please Explian Why this Quest is in the Game? I'm intrested to know. As far as i See it it's a waste of space in the game. Unless it gives you alot of Fame Which i doubt.

First fish I caught was the hat!

Is it me or are they making the quests a little too easy?

after 4 casts, i cought the hat. i just think that it has nothing to do with your fishing skill, what rod you're using or bait, just that its all about luck. i cought the cap right next to the boy with a willow fishing rod and lugworms in about 5 minutes.
hat

Used carbon rod and lug worms. Caught it right by boy. Friend next to me lost his Sabuki rig to broken line . After that we both used lugs and caught it about the same time. Don't use expensive rigs, worms or lugs work fine. Luck to all

BTW level 1 fishing exp

Talk to the the boy Paytah in Port at i-7 (not j-7).

If he talks about his Father's hat blowing away, you got the start of the quest, trade him the ripped cap. (doesn't matter if you get the cap before you get hte quest or after - i got it and tossed it about a zillion times before i even knew what it was for.)

Then go to Waters and DON'T talk to Baren, just trade Baren at the hatshop (down south in waters, off the map) the ripped hat and he should ask for 4 dhamel hides.

(If you had the 3 giant bird feather's quest going with Baren before hand that's the reason you don't want to chat with him before just trading him the hat or you'll get the bird feather quest again as someone mentioned, which is, repeatable i think (or obviously if you get it again). All i know is i didn't chat him up i just traded the ripped cap to him.

you bring back the four dhamel hides and trade them to him again without chatting him up, he gives you a dhalmel (finally spelled it right) mantle and a sailor's cap you can bring back to the boy in port and trade it to him. (The dhalmel's mantle is for you, not the boy.) The boy is thrilled and gives you a 'lvl 14 def of 1' leather ring, and bob's your uncle.

this recap is brought to you by all the helpful posts that came before it that helped me figure it out. thanks, everyone, this site saves much time and hairpulling. i despise quests but i guess they kill time.

too many caps

I caught the cap with a Carbon Fishing rod and a Sabiki Rig.

I had been fishing off the pier for upwards of 7 hours before I pulled up a cap. I wasn't fishing for the cap, however... but since I don't see a patented method to fish the thing up, it looks like some people might be in for a wait!

Funny thing is, after I fished it up, my next cast caught another one.

I don't know my fame level, but I did the quest, but I only got a Dhalmel mantle, no Leather ring. Anybody else experienced this?

Never mind, forgot to trade back the cap to the boy.

Before trying to catch the hat, I looked at all the other posters, and decided to try using the bamboo pole + lugworm bait. This got me 85% lost catches, 10% fish, and 5% nothing caught.

So I switched to small worm bait. This got me 85% nothing caught, 10% lost catches, and 5% kelp/rusty leggings.

Next I tried switching to clothespole. Basically the same thing with both baits, only less catches due to some items being too small for the rod.

I switched back to the bamboo pole and small worm bait, as you don't lose it when nothing bites it off the hook.

Having kept track of casts, it wasn't until #116 that I finally got the hat. However, my inventory was full. After throwing a suicidal tantrum, I started plugging away again with the bamboo rod and small worm bait.

Finally, #186 was the lucky number, and I kept the hat the second time I managed to catch it. Rest of the quest is a breeze.

Level 16 WHM, 0.4 fishing skill, 30 gil for image synthesis support

Fished off of Fisherman's Guild Pier, further toward the sea from the plank that leads to the Guild Shop, and facing the opposite direction. (On the pier, there is a series of 3 pair of white planks, side-by-side. I fished from the planks just left of the pair of white planks furthest down the pier toward the sea)

Race: Mithra
Rod: TaruTaru
Bait: Lugworm or Sibiki Rig
Skill: 0
Fame: People are starting to talk about you.

I had been trying to talk to the kids for some time, and just happend to go fishing with a friend just to keep him company. I caught the hat on my fifth catch!

On a side note: I also managed to catch a fat greedie (in Selbina or Mhaura) but that broke my taru rod and this was before I caught the Ripped hat and with an even lower skill of 0. I guess I am just lucky.

I don't know why he wouldn't let me finish the quest for the hat, but I put it down for a few days and went back traded that hat to the boy again, and he didn't do anything. Then traded that hat to Baren-Moren and he did finally give me the quest. All done now :)

I've activated this quest and I have the hat, but after catching the hat and talking to the children I went to Baren-Moren, and he wants more feathers. I try to trade the hat to him and he doesn't take it. No matter what I do he only wants me to get the feathers. Perhaps that's what he was saying, and I would like to know WTH is going on. I don't know that this quest gives much detail here. Once again, this quest IS active for me.

I did that and he cried and said it was all tore up, so I went to Boren-Moren and he only wants me to do the Feather Quest again. I tried trading that hat to the boy again, but he doesn't do anything else. Any other advice?

I haven't done it but my guess is you just need to finish the bird feather quest first.(which I also must do) The NPC is stuck on that one. The same thing happens with other NPCs that are involved in multiple quests.

Turn in the feathers for the feather quest, but DO NOT speak to Boren-Moren or it auto-starts the feather quest again. Just turn in the feathers, zone, then come back and trade the hat.

it is possible to do this quest with the feather
quest activated - just trade the hat to the baron
and he'll ask you for four dhalmel hides. i Have
completed the feather quest three or four times
previously, however, so that might have something
to do with it ( although prior to trading the hat
to him i talked to him and all he wanted was more
big bird feathers ) .. i was able to trade him
the four dhalmel hides and receive the repaired
cap with the feather quest still active.

1) this may not work if you have not completed
the feather quest at least once .. i can't
vouch for that

2) my fishing skill was at 5 ( barely )

3) windy fame level 9 ( hero )

4) RDM43

5) rank 4

Fishing skill 11, L20 RDM, Fame Level 2 in Windurst, with Fishing Moghancement. Waltzed up to the pier on midday Firesday, caught it not once but TWICE. Couldn't keep it a second time, of course. No airship pass, so can't get to the pier.

I caught the hat with lvl 1 fishing skill, using a composite rod and little worms, on my 2nd cast while fishing at the pier by the fishing guild. Saw that the item was rare ex, so I found out which quest it goes to and then figured I might as well use it. ;p
Level 3 fame in Windy btw when I got the quest.

Do you need the airship pass to get to the guy? I don't recall the pier being off limits to non airship travelers.

It was mentioned earlier that someone thought this cap could not be caught with willow or yew fishing poles. This has also been my experience. Has anyone on here caught the ripped cap with a willow or yew pole? Please post if you have.
