Description

Go to the Steaming Sheep restaurant in Port Bastok and talk to Powhatan at (E-6). He wants you to greet a guest of his at the air travel agency, and ask you to wear a maul on your hip so the guest will recognise you. Go buy a replica maul or a regular maul and head back to the Steaming Sheep and talk to Powhatan again. Two selections will appear: "Where can I find a maul?" and "Where am I supposed to meet your guest?". Select "Where are you supposed to meet your guest?" and Powhatan will then ask, "You can't find him? On no! He must've already arrived! He's probably wandering, lost, and trying to find me! Please go find him! He should be in this district, but if he's wandered off to the Bastok Markets, ask the guards there if they've seen him!" Head to (D-8) and talk to the guard, Steel Bones. This will intiate a cut scene. He says, "An Elvaan knight named Domien? Yes, I believe I've seen someone matching that description walk by earlier... wait, is that him?" Then Domien walks in asking, "That maul... are you Powhatan? You're his representative? No matter--you should know that being late to a meeting is rude, not to say inforgivable, where I come from. I have written a letter of complaint to Mister Powhatan. Give it t him--I am going back to Jeuno. Goodbye." Domien then walks off, ending the cut scene, and you recieve the key item, Letter from Domien. Now head back to the Steaming Sheep once more and talk to Powhatan. He will then say, "Ah, you're back! Where is Sir Domien? What!? He gave you this letter and left in a fury!? Oh, no! What am I to do? ...Still, you've done what I've asked you to do, and I feel I still owe you for the last time. Here, take this." You obtain a Targe, completing the quest.

Not sure if they've changed the parameters of the quest over time, or if I just had a random change.

Just completed the quest, but Powhatan asked me for a Shell Shield, not a Maul. Also, the guest he wanted me to meet is a Hume white mage named Evrain.

After getting a Shell Shield, I returned to Powhatan, asked where to meet Evrain, and he told me that if Evrain wasn't at the airship Arrivals area, I should talk to someone at the desk inside the Arrivals area of the airship dock. I did so, which triggered a cutscene where Bartolomeo (NPC inside Arrivals area) said he hadn't seen anyone by that name come thru. At that point Evrain walks thru the door, recognizes me as the person he's supposed to meet, and he tells me he'll go see Powhatan himself. I returned to Powhatan, who says he met with Evrain, and thank you for my help...quest complete, item granted was a Spatha, not a Targe.

Some very interesting differences between my experience and the original quest description.

Well, no. The quest you did was called "Welcome to Bastok". Just look at your quest log for proof.

That being said, if you talk to Powhatan again, he may give you this quest. Nothing has been changed.

Oh, and I forget if this has been mentioned, but having a Replica Maul also works. It's for all jobs and fairly cheap, especially considering you can sell it back afterward.

Edit: Yeah, it was mentioned. Sorry. =P

First off I want to say thanks for the Drama. Very entertaining, if not a total waste of scroll down energies.

Second, I will thank all the great Walk-thru details. Big Help!

Now... Many places and many times on here and other threads I have seen that the Replica Maul is obtained in Gusgen Mines.

HOW???

'Get' in FF is a fairly loose term.

Facts on the Quest
# Mar 06 2004 at 1:09 PM Rating: Good
Ok I just completed this quest not 5 mins ago and I found some intresting diffrences between what it says in the quest details above and what actually happened.

I got the quest by talking to Powhatan when I had enough fame. I was a lvl 30 rdm at the time. When I leveled up to lvl 31 I went to bastok and bought a replica maul. I equiped this and went to the airship arrivals area and talked to the guy I talked to last time. Nothing happened. Soon afterwards a airship arrived I sat there and waited and talked to him about 20 times or so and still nothing happened.

Now at this point I was wondering if possiably a replica maul would not work for the quest contrary to what was said above. So I went back to Powhatan and talked to him again. He gave me several options that I could choose from. 1 of them was a option asking about what a maul was. Another was a option where I commented on how I was haveing trouble finding the guy I was looking for.

After I picked the option about haveing trouble finding the guy I was looking for Powhatan made a comment about how I must of missed him and how I should look through the area to see if I could find him or if I couldn't find him I should talk to the guards in the Bastok Market to see if they had seen him. Upon hearing this I headed over to Bastok Markets.

On the Way to the markets section I saw a guard named Steel Bones. He is at the very end of the bridge you cross to get to the bastok markets. Upon talking to him A cutsceen was started where I asked the guard if he had seen the person I was looking for. Then the person I was looking for walked up to me a conversation took place that can bassicly be summed up as. He was really pissed that Powhatan had not shown up and that he refused to deal with people who can not keep their promises. He gave me a letter(a key item) to give to Powhatan. After giveing the letter to Powhatan he gave me the targe and the quest was completed.

Now I am not sure if this is how it is for everyone and this site just hasn't been updated or If I messed up some how and got the alternate version of the quest. Did this happen to anyone else? Perhaps this is what happens if you equip a replica maul instead of a maul. I am kind of wondering if from the general mood of the 2 conversations that maybe I actually failed this quest. I still got the targe but Powhatan said he felt he still owed me from the first time. *Shrug*

I've seen the quest completed with my own eyes by a whm with a maul and with the replica maul, both make you search bastok markets because you missed the passenger.

You could skip looking in the Markets and just go directly to the Galkan guard at the bridge to the Markets.

well to be honest, im sure the game encourages you to try out different jobs too. you wont be a mage forever, right?

granted you dont want to hold onto an item until your next job can use it, but on the other hand, you're here reading about these quests, you know what the prize is...dont do it if you really dont even want to use it or sell it.

personally i end up selling a lot of them because i'm beyond that level or it wasn't something i would have chosen anyway.

i figure the next time i come around with a job that does need it, ill have more money and just pick it up off the AH without a worry.

now im glad there's a replica maul that could be used, b/c i was sitting here thinking that's a whole lot of people who need to get 30/31 whm just to finish this quest.

A little more consistancy would be nice when indicating the minimum level for aquiring quests. He can give you this quest well before level 31. I got it yesterday at 25. I just had a whackload of Bastok fame and completed his previous quest. Of course, I won't be able to complete it until I hit 31.
RE: Minimum level...

Thus the 31... You can start ANY of these quests with the exception of Chocobo, Adv. Job and AF quests when you have enough fame.

AlthornCS Scholar used the word, Ergo!

How quaint!

If you do not like the reward of a quest, you do not have to do the quest... if you want to complete all the quests in the game, (sigh) then complete them and understand that it's your choice to do so.

There is no reason or rhyme to online quests; even the creators of these little things forget why they do them. Yes, some are pointless, others are great for rewards...

Why does everyone get so angry in these threads?

SCH

PS. Why does a "Slow" spell cost 4,000 gil in Wind AH, but only 1,400 in Bastok AH?

Supply and demand really. More mages tend to be in Windurst, so they're willing to pay more for it. Also, the site seems to indicate that there is no vendor that sells Slow in Windurst, but there is for both Bastok and San d'Oria, depending on Conquest placement.
RE: Rewards!
# May 09 2006 at 11:52 AM Rating: Decent
Slow sells in each nation's magic shop when that nation is in 1st place and only to that nation's constituents. So, if your allegiance is to Bastok, it will never appear in the Windirt magic shop for u. But it will show in the Bastok magic shop for u when Bastok is in 1st.

There is a replcica Maul availble in the game. It goes for almost the same price as a real Maul but at least its lvl 31 ALL JOBS. Pretty sure this will work...I didn't try, I'm a white mage.

Also the targe sells for 1700 to an NPC vendor if you can't unload it at an AH.

Perhaps just that it would make more sense for a WHM item to be given in a quest only a WHM can do. Or maybe they are just being conversational - either way, lighten up.

There is another item that can be used to complete this quest. A "Replica Maul" Lvl 31, All Jobs. Not sure how one would come across one outside of AH, seeing as thats the only place I've seen one so far.

But can be sold at the AH for Gil, which can in turn, purchase WHM items.

I swear. What is it with "I can't equip my prize, so this quest sucks" people?

Because while the item sells for a tidy sum, you also have to put out a sum for the maul (unless you get lucky enough to find a Quadav that drops one - and I haven't yet), and it would be nice to get items that actually relate to my class instead of more melee-class only gear.

That, and the fact that dealing with the AH is just another pointless hassle. Since the only thing that a WHM can do is get rid of the shield, why not just give us cash instead? Its like all of the rusty daggers that my paladin used to get in EQ after finishing quests.

I should also add this note...

The Targ sold just before the AH deadline ran out. There were never more than 2 for sale in the AH. Ergo, this item doesn't appear to be a big seller, and its possible that if more people do the quest, it might be difficult to unload the Targ in the AH.

What? You mean you can't sell back the maul either? You still come out ahead on this quest because it doesn't eat the initial requirements like most quests do (ie. the maul).

RE: Reward
# Feb 19 2004 at 4:55 PM Rating: Default
Were you trying to sell the shield in bastok? Most lvl 30's and up don't buy stuff in home town auctions anymore. Sell it at Jeuno or Kazham where people who are 36 tend to be more often. And besides, the Maul is a great weapon. And it'll easily give you back your money, and then some if you play the AH just right. Another tip: if you're running out of AH room, buy another char and use it for storage. It's only $1 a month more. You can find that in your couch. If that $1 is a real issue, maybe you should concentrate more on making money in real life and not in a game.
