This quest wasn't too bad... here is my take on it.
Monks are pretty good ^^ i had a lvl 62 Monk, Starc (Shiva), with AF armor show me the way, and a whm 50, Yein, come along. We got down to the NM Polevik and (dont fall in hole) we started the fight. I really didnt see much damage being taken and i sat back and healed as Paladin (40 of course) the whm cured alot tho i wasn't paying much attention to if it was helping much or not. This fight lasted about 1-2 minutes and the Monk was on Hundred Fists btw. I got the stone and then got my AF 1 ^^d Pretty easy with a lil help from a friend... Jakro (Shiva)

Anyway, I just hit 40 pld last night so I decided I may as well hurry up and get my AF sword. Problem was, I didn't know if I could spawn the NM on my whm, so I went as pld--my perma pld wasn't online. I asked a 74 blm friend of mine if he could help.
I asked if he was ready (I'd subbed whm because he told me not to tank) He said yes--as soon as I spawned it, he said wait XD That SOB hits hard. I had some pretty damn good armor on and it was hitting me for 150+. I was told that the NM spammed stonega II, but he only used it once. I had like 340 hp prior, because I wasn't concentrating on curing myself, just my taru blm friend XD stonega II did 404 dmg and wiped me out, and the blm spammed his nukes, killed the NM with about 300 hp, 200 something mp. raised me, I got my item, and whee. it was fun. But seriously, if you're on a 40pld, no matter your sub, you should probably just play healer ._.D I was hitting the mob for 1 dmg-5dmg each time.

Can anyone tell me if this can be spawned by a non-paladin? Say, just anyone? Or is this only a 40ish+ paladin that is able to spawn it?

OMG... this guy was a total pansy. I had a 63blm/whm, 45 whm/blm, 40 pld/war (me), and a 40 drk/war. Polevik lasted about 30 secs. Blm used ancient magic and pwned him. WOOT to the BLM's out there!!!

I solo'd the NM for someone in Sandy that couldn't get help at all. 64 Drg / 32 Whm. It wasn't too difficult except that the paladin was in range of Stonega II and almost died. Drained my mp saving her with healing breath III + cure III.
Still had enough to cast Healing Breaths on myself when the AoE's made me spirit link.

I thought I read somewhere that this weapon was a greatsword. Is this weapon one or two handed?
It's one-handed. Soloed yesterday with 55 MNK/WAR. Built up TP to 300% > boosted about 8 times > Activated Dodge and Focus > spawned it > Chi Blast > Raging Fists > Hundred Fists > Raging Fists > Dead Earth Elemental. Got hit 3 times the whole fight and it did around 170-200 DMG each time. If I would have subbed Ninja might not have been hit at all. Good Luck.

Is it possible to do this quest as another job? Rather, fight the nm as a different job, while doing all the npc dialogue as pld? Just want to know, so I can solo this thing rather then bugging peeps to come out to help me again with AF1....
Never mind, answered my own question tonight.
Did all the preliminary questing in Sandy as pld, then spawned the nm in Ordelles as dragoon. Brought along a 57 pld and 62 whm for help, but that proved to be MASSIVE overkill. Needless to say, the fight ended before it even started, and most likely any job @60 or above can solo this with no problem (maybe even 55)...

Party plan: i spawn,60PLD tanks,Whm heals and blm spams freeze and other spells.Everyone else whips out swords and chips at health.
Results:We win, not hard at all. Don't Panic!! If whm is good you will be fine. I think a party of well equiped high 40's low 50's shouldn't have too much trouble with this. Just get a BLM with freeze.
Battle:We weren't even paying attention untill the thing does a Stonega II. 100 to me 70's to everyone else. After 2 of these it was still only 1/8th way down in hp. We were hurt whm heals us fight continues with people hacking and slashing thing.its at mabye at a less than 1/4 hp.
Then the WS come out. After much debuffing from the drk,blm,and whm, 60PLD uses sneak attack vorpal blade for 400 dmg! 57PLD come up with a 100dmg spirits within. drk does a 120 vorpal-something with scythe. Then the BLM freezed. Battle went on with normality. Thing uses Stonega II everyone's beat up, whm cures, blm freezes, end of story.
Word of warning!!!!!!!! Make sure your not tanking this thing if you are 40-43! 100dmg does not look good for a well equiped PLD. Thats how I almost came close to death. I spawned before tank was ready and got hurt, badly.

Finished this quest lastnight. Have to warn you, this is not a very nice Elemental. Party was a Lvl 75 THF, 41 PLD(me) and a 41 WHM. We all built up TP and I spawned him. He came after me first and I voked him to keep him facing me, THF used SA Dancing Weapon, and if I remember correctly it did 149 Damage!!! Not a good sign. I did WS, 49 Damage. Polevik comes after me and attacks for 250-300 damage, I cure II to stay alive, He goes after the THF and I think well if I voke it the THF can do more damage, Bad decision. It took me to the ground in about 3 hit. THF is getting beat on and the WHM starts curing, WHM gets hate the THF yells "Nooooo!", WHM joins me. THF Finally kills it but gets put in the red. Well we're screwed for a raise, so WHM says she'll HP and comes back to raise me. THF gets 300 TP, WHM buffs up this time, I decide not to do anything but look scared in the corner, I go to Spawn it again an I Obtained key item: Whetstone Wooot!

This is a very easy fight without high level help. There were a total of 7 people doing this in 2 seperate parties. the jobs were 44BLM, 45WHM, 45WAR, 45DRK, 31WHM, 40RNG, and a 40BST. the fight took all of maybe 2 minutes, with a war tanking. It started with the RNG, WAR, and DRK building up 300tp, opened with a SC and the BLM just all out nuked every level II spell aside from stone. The War used every JA availavble to grab hate and the whm silenced the elemental. With just 7 people and no one above level 45 we killed the elemental without anyone dropping into red or using a 2 hour.
The key to killing this is a whm so silence, and a blm to nuke.

56 Monk ... owned it no problem at all. I soloed it, used chakra once and Raging Fists twice!
Funny story while fighting the NM elemental (Same post under "Honor Sword"):
It was just me (PLD41/WAR20) and my friend (PLD60/WAR30) and we went to do the quest to get this sword for me. Anyway, when we got to the spawn point, we built up our TP and what not. Our plan was that I jump in with a single WS and then step out and help cure my friend. Then we both got hit with Stonega II and I got smacked upside the head and lost over half my HP.
I threw out my Cures whenever needed, and my friend ended up using his 2HR also. It was down to about 25% HP left. Then he said, "RUN!" and he dropped down the hole and lured it away from me. So I ran all the way back to the entrance of Ordelle's Cave. And then I stop to rest. My friend, somewhere on the map, says, "I think I lost it..."
I gain enough HP/MP back while resting and cast a CureIII on myself. Next thing I know, the damn elemental comes out from behind and hits me once. The funny thing is, it ran away after that one hit. So I told my friend and I'm like, "What a pu**y! LOL"
After that, he tells me to meet him back at the NM spawn point. On my way there, he says that it came back for him, so he starts fighting it again. I start curing him again as needed, and after all the weak hits he was giving out, he finally kills it, and I get the Whetstone.
It was pretty funny, cuz the damn thing went through the caves looking for the both of us, and we ended up killing it anyway. Haha!
And my reward: a nice new Honor Sword that I'll be using after I gain my 500 EXP to 42. ^^

I have been thinking about doing this quest just for the hell of it because I never did it at 42. I am a lvl 50 PLD right now. Just curious as to how long you can use this sword for party tanking at least.
I used the sword all the way up until 57. Not as my primary sword of course. We fought crabs and pugs from 55-57 for example and for the pugs I would swap to Honor Sword and War Belt+1 because I did such little damage anyway.
I highly recomend that you carry it with you until you get Gluttony.

You'll need to do this AF1-1 quest soon if you want to start the quest for your AF1-2 Gallant leggings. Most AF1-1 weapons are not worth using beyond level 50, and the Honor sword is no exception to this.
At level 50 for a PLD, you can switch to the Tactician Magician's Espadon and then to Tactician Magician's Espadon +2 at level 52.

Alright,so I am about to be level 43 and I decide what the hell,might as well ask around to beat this beast of a mob.I get from my LS a level 70 Red Mage/35 Black Mage to help.So I'm pretty psyched,thinking this will be easy as hell,and we reach the Stalagmite.Unfortunately this is where things get shot to hell.I spawn it,and me and the Red aren't buffed up.No problem,she's level 70.She casts a few spells on it,and she takes 200 damage.

Red Mage in full AF taking 200 damage from this thing?I underestimated it's power obviously.So I try my hand at tanking it,and that proved to be quite stupid,but hey,I didn't want to sit back idly as someone else did all the work for my AF.I'm getting hit in the upper 100's,I use Invincible,by now we're buffed up,and at about half it's hp it kills me.The Red and Pole and basically trading blows until she Sleeps it,Converts,Raises me,and continues her assault.After that she beat it with relatively low difficulty.
Moral is,don't underestimate this guy.Unless you're going to have the upper levels baby you as you leech off of them for your AF,be prepared for a death.

First of all I'm sweeting bullets because I'm still in de-level range at 43 when i'm getting ready to touch stelegmite. There are posts in here that state the does 150+ dmg everytime even with 60+vit from equipment and food. Nope, never got hit for more then 90. His casting was minimal since he had elemental seal -> silence cast on him. How much dmg did I do.....I don't know, A palidan's first job is to grab the hate

Everyone went into fight with a role in the Skillchain and 300% TP (witch didn't realy matter) we never got it off. We just wound up going randomly.
Yes, we had 2 45+ members and 2 55+ members but I tanked it at 43, no sweet. What it boils down to is that little globe too the left of your name. Stop hiring Mercinaries at 55 to Spirits Within it, and sit there and do nothing. If your that far ahead of your members, maybe you need to slow down, farm craft, just stop lvling for a sec. If your that far behind and catching up all be it get that 55 PLD or RDM and have them earn it for you, but don't pay for services. Get your "brother's and sisters at arms" to help you. I they say no, maybe there are bigger problem's then you not being able to Get you AF1.

Not every high level PLD sells their services to others for various AF quests.
I'm always willing to help others with their AF quests regardless of job type for free. I've been in these experiences where I sit in Jeuno /shout spamming for hours waiting for random help from people with AF quests, and it sucks. LS help isn't always available depending on the time of day.
I don't condone nor support mercenary-type help, but sometimes it doesn't hurt.

Ok, i did this quest yesterday and had no problems.
Party was - Me (46 Paladin) - 71 Black mage and 55 Red Mage ( for healing )
I popped the elemental and immediatly used my 2hr ability so i can keep hate. The BLM nuked it with fireaga III and Aero III and such spells. After my 2 hr ran off. The mobs health was at 1/4th. I was getting hit for 140+ damage. The rdm healed while the blm finished him off.

I threw my AF1 sword out 2 months ago when I sorta had to quit game..thinking for good...not my choice by the way..and gave all my stuff away to LS members...and now I wish I hadn't cause I am dying to lvl my pally and dont have the motivation without having my sowrd..loved that sword ;;
If anyone has any info pls post and hope there is a miracle outher that can get me my sword back!!!...<keeping fingers crossed>

Yes you can do once more the AF quest(I'm level 34 drg so I didn't do the Af quest yet) but if you talk to a certain npc in Jeuno (for more info check out the site Mystery Tour in the quest section. This NPC restet all the quest you've done for Af. This should include the AF weapons...
what is spirits within? how and when do u get that?
Its a Weapon Skill, need lvl 175 of Sword skill to get it.

any insight as to what lvl you can get this Weapon skill? 175...thats dandy... not quite as useful though.

Somewhere around 50, but is very useful since at 300tp it hits equivalent to half your current health. That's HUGE.
