Summary

Take Mertaire's bracelet to Ranguemont Pass and immerse it in the Waters of Oblivion.

Walkthrough

After speaking with Mertaire at I-8 in Lower Jeuno to start the quest, head to Ranguemont Pass and proceed into the room with the large stone door and the guards. You need to be in the northwestern-most chamber. Just keep heading north and -- after many bats, a few goblins and an eye or two -- you'll come to a room with evil weapons. This is the room you're supposed to be in. Clear out the weapons, rest, buff up, then click on the "Waters of Oblivion." This will spawn the notorious monster Tros.

The monster is weak to magic and strong against physical damage, so melee jobs should save TP for weaponskills before the fight starts. Tros can cast Waterga II, sometimes twice in a row, so barwatera or water carol helps.

As soon as you beat Tros, click on the "Waters of Oblivion" again and Mertaire appears for your cutscene. He gives you your Paper Knife on the spot. No need to go back to Jeuno.

Beat this last night...

My LS did this for me last night

41/20 BRD/WHM <- Me!
41/20 BLM/WHM
41/20 BLM/WHM
41/20 WHM/BLM
41/20 DRK/WAR
41/20 PLD/WAR

Directions: Head to Ranguemont pass, and proceed into the room with the large stone door and the guards. The chamber you need to be in is the northwestern most. Just keep heading north mostly (as you don't need to head west from where you start much at all, only really need to make sure not to head much east) and after many many bats, a few goblins, and I think an eye or two, you'll come to a room with evil weapons. This is the room you're supposed to be in. These also drop glittersand (rare/ex quest item, I think it's for a SAM AF), but you don't care much. Just clear out the weapons, rest, buff up, then click on the "waters of oblivion". This will spawn Tros, and he will aggro on you initialy, but a quick provoke will make this matter trivial.

It wasn't too bad, but a lot more difficult for us than other IT mobs of our level, and we only got a measly 35 XP.

Magic (ice and lightning) seems to go a lot further than melee attacks. Our DRK (who has nice gear, food, etc) was dealing low damage, one attack that dealt 6 (!) comes to mind. If you want to kill this with melee damage, I would suggest not going in with a party as low as ours. Probably 90% of our damage was from spells.

We built up TP beforehand just getting to the boss, it's not hard. We used sneak to bypass the Stirges and Seeker Bats, and we slaughtered any goblins that aggroed, as well as the evil weapons. The burning blade that I got off as a result did 154 damage, and was my only significant damage contribution.

If you're the bard... Keep Water Carol and Barwatera up. It can and will cast Waterga II, and with us it did it twice in a row.

Also, it is nice that as soon as you beat Tros, you click on the "Waters of Oblivion" again and Mertaire appears for your cutscene and gives you your Paper Knife on the spot. No need to go back to Jeuno.

Edit: Added directions to the pool.

Do you have to be a bard for the battle or can you go as another job?

Someone wrote in anothe rpost that the DRK they had help them got the quest completed too when he beat Tros... so I don't think you have to be a Bard.

Did this AF last night

I spammed Jeuno until I got two people to help me. We had a DRK55/WAR27, BLM49/WHM24 and BRD40/WHM20 (me). We get to the Pass and meet up with a Level 30 WHM friend of of the BLM who is on her way to the Glacier for the SMN quest and we sais we'd escort her there after the AF. I really didn't think the WHM was going to be a help, and we did have some aggro problems along the way but when Tros did spawn the WHM was just enough to save our collective bacons.

Myself, the BLM and the WHM all used blink and the WHM used Barwater. I Used Soul Voice, buffed and activated the NM. He was hitting the DRK pretty hard and the Maelstrom attack he used hurt the rest of us but the BLM, WHM and I spammed CureII on him so He was ok. I thank god for the Barwater cause it wuse Maelstron twice and WatergaII once. At the end the DRK had about 1/3 HP and Myself, the WHM and BLM were at 0 Mana

Kinda fun actually.

Note: The DRK also was BRD 40 and decided to do this as well. We were geared up to fight Tros again but he didn't have to! So multiple Bards can complete this quest at once.

Just did this last night, a 40 bard might get aggro from bats and goblin so have whm cast sneak and inv. Kill the evil weapons near the Pool of the Damned or whatever it was called and then trigger Tros he will target you first so have your melee ready to voke. I had help from a 60 nin an a 49 whm and it was simple. He does some AOE attacks (magic) that can hurt you so be carefull. If you cast silence on him, its even better cuz he doesn't cast Waterga II on you. over all a rather easy AF and the knife is really cool and looks badass ^_^.

Props to NotAGuild Best LS ever.

The Mob is named Tros, as stated above. He's not 60 though, he's a 44 sea monk (think Kraken), all in all a fairly easy battle. Bring yourself, a 45ish WHM, and a 50ish physical damage dealer of some variety and you should have no problems with this mob, or likewise completing the quest.
