Description

Talk to Devean behind Sheperd's Muster in Selbina.

He asks if you want to find some loot he hid in Davoi. If you say yes he will ask you to bring him back a pair of power sandals hidden inside an urn in Davoi, and will ask if you want to bet on how quick you will make it back to him. You then need to bet either 100, 150, 500, or 1000 gil and if you will make it back in 24, 36, 48, 60, or 72 hours. The quicker you come back to him with the sandals, the more money you will make. Example is if you choose that you will be back in 24 hours you will get back 3 times your bet for your reward, and if you choose that you will be back in 72 hours you will get 1.2 times your bet for a reward.

You must be back to him before the time you said to get the money, if you are not back in time you lose the money from your bet.

One question
# Apr 15 2005 at 7:58 PM Rating: Decent
I got these sandels way after the time limit for the quest had already expired. Of course, the guy won't let me restart the challenge unless I drop the sandals. But can I throw them in my mog house, start the quest, grab them and run back, and still complete the quest? Will he let you start it if the sandals are in your mog house?
One question
# Dec 11 2006 at 2:18 PM Rating: Decent
Try sending them to yourself via the in game delivery service, just don't take them. I think that will work, but i wouldn't swear on int.
RE: One question
# May 16 2005 at 7:07 PM Rating: Decent
I haven't done this quest myself yet, but i'd have to assume that, since you are unable to get rare-exclusive items when they are in your mog house, you won't be able to leave them in your mog house without him believing that they aren't there. In other words... highly doubtful that trick would work.

My boyfriend and I wanted a pair of these sandles for our tanking jobs. We found his near the center stronghold, down by the Geezards.

I ended up finding mine smack in the middle of the IT orcs in the southwest corner. =P

Snuck in, dropped Invis, grabbed the sandles, retreated behind the tents, re-applied invisible and warped us to Holla. ^_^

YES, I finally got them. Been one day since I decided I wanted them, and I just got them. The first time, I went in with a lvl 75 WHM. I could tell he didn't know what he was doing, but it was nice of him to help me all the same. Then I died from a train that somehow saw through my invis or sneak or something, and all I saw was:

The Orcish Beast Rider Scores a critical hit!
xxx (I am not posting my name) takes 121 points of damage!

The Orchish whatever uses fire (or something I'm making this one up) hits xxx for 231 damage!

xxx is defeated by the Orcish Fire Belcher.

But it was not his fault. He had to go, used Telleport-Holla, and I was stuck trying to find another person to help me. After what seemed like 5-6 hours of nonstop searching, I headed to Sandy and just happened to see a lvl 65 PLD who was wearing Power Sandals. I asked him if he knew where they were, and he did, so he decided to help me. He told me not to enter, and that he would come back once he found the jar. After literally 2 mins of him using Prism Powders, he said, "Found it, you're lucky it was over here." It was the first place that was listed on the map. Did not even need sneak or invis when we went back; he beat the HELL out of anything that even wandered near me. I went over when we arrived, examined the jar, and I got em'!!

WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THAT, MR. "I DO NOT THINK YOU ARE EXPIRIENCED ENOUGH YET!!!???"

After accepting this quest from Devean in Selbina can the "Jar" location for my quest change? I died 4 times last night and followed Rosenballs walkthrough to the Stronghold (well put together mind you) but the Jar was not at the top of the elevator, or in the immediate area. So i went back 3 more times and just searched areas of Davoi with no luck. Going to try again tonight, but didn't want to go back to the stronghold if the location for me isn't going to change. I hope my questions is clear, and i appreciate anyones help. Thanks

Ahh, FINALLY got them. I printed the map in a previous post.

http://ffxi.killvoid.com/maps/images/davoi.jpg
As already stated, bottle locations are not marked these show cave entrances) and used a pen to outline the following grids.

(F-9), (H-9), (G-6), (J-8), (F-6)...there may be more but these indicate locations posters have identified as finding the "Jar". This helped me to narrow my search area, instead of simply wandering Davoi. Mine was in (J-8) also.

The grids above DO NOT included the Stronghold location as identified in Rosenballs walkthrough. However the stronghold is as likely, or more likely, a location for the Jar as well. If you know of other locations please add to the list.

If you don't get to the sandals within the alotted time can you still find them in the Jar? Or do you need to bet first?

A previous post said that you can still get them even after time runs out. I am curious however if the location can change at all AFTER you have gotten the quest and/or after time has run out.
If you finish
# Dec 24 2004 at 9:52 AM Rating: Decent
What happens if you finish the quest? Like you turn in the boots within the time... obviously you win the bet... but do you keep the boots?

EDIT:
Nevermind... I did this with my whm character, gave the boots back and lost them ; ;. I thought maybe if I talk to him again... and luckily, I was able to do the bet again and I went back. The sandals were again on the middle island, but this time the Jar was near the bottom of the elevator... so it made it easier. Now that I got them again, I'm not giving them back. Now I have them for both of my characters ^^.

Finally got them!
# Dec 17 2004 at 8:03 AM Rating: Decent
I've tried to get these sandals a few times. The last time I went, I had a WHM friend help me (he was on his PAL quest anyway) and he scouted out the jars in advance using the map posted below (thank you!). Of course, it was on the central island, so we ended up going through the Monastic Cavern. A stack each of Silent Oil and Prism Powder *minimum* is recommended if the thing is on the central island. It's not a fun spot to reach either, as you have to drop invis to throw an elevator switch. Just make sure you have a scroll of warp or teleport handy once you've gotten it.

This was my third attempt. I had died and given up on the last two. Just interested in keeping the sandals themselves though so I wasn't worried about time.

I just got my boots. It took 4 deaths and over 3 hours, but I got 'em. I would strongly recommend starting from San d'Oria (if you're below lvl20 in particular, so you can make the choco ride) and doing this as a PLD or THF, as the slightest hesitation after dropping invis to interact with the jar can kill you.

My first time through Davoi I caught aggro from some bats, since I only had invis up at the time (I didn't even know there were bats >< in Davoi). The second time I ran around until I found the jar, but it turned out to be in the Stronghold, and I was on the level below. Again, I only had invis on, and I got a little overzealous trying to grab the sandals from the bottom of the ledge and ran afoul of a pugil.

The third time I actually made it to the jar (it was still in the same place.. presumably nobody else was hunting it at the time), then dropped invis, hit escape, and hit enter. I was dead before I realized I needed to hit escape twice after dropping invis. The fourth time was the charm, but I certainly didn't have time to activate my scroll of instant warp before being 2-shotted (as a 30WAR/15PLD).

So to summarize, bring lots of powder AND oil, make sure both are always on unless you're sure the area you're running through is clear of one type of aggro, and interact with the jar immediately after you drop invis (or have Invincible or Perfect Dodge on) if it happens to be in the Stronghold.

I finally got the Sandals this evening. The method I used to explore Davoi was so easy it almost felt like cheating.

I was doing the Summerfest Mog Quests when me and my partner turned up in Davoi. We found the Goalpoint easy enough, but then I remembered this quest. When we got back to town I took off towards Selbina and started it. Then I returned to Bastok and did the Mog Quest again and again until I was sent to Davoi. And behold, I was in Davoi with an infinite Sneak and Invisible. I explored around and found the Jar in the southeast area, near a tent with a Hide Flap. I waited for the Orcs to move away, dropped Invisible, grabbed the Sandals out of the jar, and used the Glyph to warp back to town.

So there you go, as long as the jar isn't in the central island and you don't have to zone into Monastic Cavern, this is probably the easiest way to get to it. Better hurry, I think Summerfest only lasts another week or so. Good luck!

The fame rankings for many of the quests on Allakhazam are not accurate; I believe it defaults to "none" if the level is not known.

Norg fame (technically, Tenshodo fame) is fame related to any dealings with the underground syndicate, the Tenshodo. Since the Tenshodo runs Norg, your Tenshodo fame affects all prices and quest availability within Norg; however, it also affects other prices (such as those from the Tenshodo dealers in Bastok and Jeuno).
RE: cant do the quest
# Jul 28 2004 at 11:44 AM Rating: Decent
You do not have enough fame. Try the "Only the Best" quest and give him a bunch of Moss. However, this "apparently" lowers your Norg fame, so beware. (This is what I have read, I do not have any first hand knowledge)

Well, I tried to get the urn assuming that it was at the stronghold on the island. It wasn't; I died. $5000 in medicine and 600 EXP gone. :(

If anyone has a complete listing of Davoi urn locations, I'd be thrilled to see it. At least, if you complete this quest, list where your urn was.
Quest Walkthrough
# Jul 26 2004 at 1:13 PM Rating: Excellent
Thank you all for posting - I guess that I was wrong about the perminent Jar location. Well, I'll keep this walkthrough here for anyone who might see the Jar at the stronghold. Here's how to get the Sandals if the Jar IF THE JAR IS AT THE STRONGHOLD:

I had a lot of trouble with this quest: I spent 15k on Silent/Prisim Powders and died 4 times before finally attaining this item. Was it worth it? I'd say so, but that's up to you. Anyway, I wanted to clear up any questions about this quest and help others do it cheaper and more easily in the future. Here's my little walkthrough for it IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THE SANDALS:

ATTN: IF THE JAR IS AT THE STRONGHOLD, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE DOING THIS IF YOU ARE LVL 70 OR BELOW, SO JUST ACCEPT IT AND GO ON

DOING THIS MISSION AS A PALADIN OR THIEF SO THAT YOU CAN USE YOUR 2-HOUR HELPS GREATLY - ONE HIT BY SOME OF THESE MOBS WILL KILL YOU AT LOWER LEVELS (18, which is ideally when you want to do this quest)

1. Go to Selbina and talk to Devean (I-9). He is up the stairs behind a few buildings.

2. Give him 100 gil and tell him you'll be back whenever, it doesn't matter, you're gonna pork him outta his sandals either way

3. Buy 3 bottles of Silent Potion and 4 Bottles of Prisim powerder. This should suffice if you do this walkthrough correctly.

4. Be sure to have a map of Davoi and of the Monastic Cavern - you will need both. (Davoi map can be purchased in North San d'Oria from Elesca (I-8). Don't know about the Monastic Cavern, I happened to already have it...)

5. Go to Davoi and use sneak/invis to get to (H-11) where you enter the Monastic Cavern. When you get into the Monastic Cavern, use another sneak/invis potion. Head to (I-8) where the map seems to head to a new zone. This will bring you back up to Davoi

6. BE CAREFUL. This area of Davoi is the "Stronghold" and there are Orcish Dragoons, etc. which are Lvl 70+. You will need another sneak/invis potion at this point.

7. Ok, the marker you are looking for is labelled "Jar", and is up the eleveator right next to the hut. Basically, you're going to die getting these sandals no matter what, so here's what I did:

a) Sneak/invis to the elevator, then uninvis to hit the switch when there are no orcs in your view. Get on the elevator, hit the switch again to make it go up, and then use your last prism potion (no sneak needed, only invis).

b) You are now up next to the hut and you must find the marker labelled "Jar". Once you find this, if you are PLD or THF, use your 2-Hour and become Invincible/Perfect Dodge. Then become uninvis (If you aren't already b/c of 2-hour, I can't remember) and check the Jar. You will obtain the Power Sandals.

That's how I did it, and died shortly thereafter. Whether or not you need a 2-hour is kind of luck, because there may or may not be Orcs near you when you examine the "Jar". I can say that in my experience, there were a ????-ton of Orcs, so my 2-HR was the only way possible to do it. If you can get by without it, more power to you. Don't plan on having enough time to warp back or anything like that, just take the death and be happy with a 3000gil pair of sandals (price you paid for potions).

Now, onto the FAQ/Clearing up part:

- The marker is labelled "Jar", not ??? or Urn or anything like that... It really pissed me off that people posted that b/c I ran around forever looking for both of those and only found the Thyme Moss, which actaully does net you 3000gil on a mission, but doesn't do anything for the Sandals...

- Wear the ???? out of the Sandals cause they're money and not well known. I've had them for 2 days and already had a half a dozen people ask me where I got them. Can't beat a free pair of Sandals with +3 VIT... That would cost like 100k on an AH. Peace!

Location of Urn
# Jul 22 2004 at 1:23 AM Rating: Decent
There's actually a simplier but longer way to do this quest. The urn appears randomly (as we all know now) in Davoi, but it stays at one spot until someone takes the sandals from it.

So in other words, goto Davoi first, with sneak/invis, and find that single urn. then use warp/instant-warp to goto selbina and get quest

that way, you are guarenteed to get the urn within 24hrs.. however, if you're unlucky (like what happened to me) and someone gets the sandals before u.. I suggest give up and look for the next spawn spot and try again.

your plan is good, but allows people to take it, i have a feeling like treasure chests it rotates after a period of time (most likely what happened to you), cause honestly as nice as those sandals are, im the only one that ive seen use em, im sure others use them...but i havent noticed it..a death or two (maybe a few more) are very much so worth it. lets see (my server) stack of prism powder at jueno 8k, (i went through 1 1/2) for a pair of boots that give +3 vit, (i sold my leaping boots after i got this) these are not even limited to class, so your pal/war/drk/sam/drg/bst and others will benefit from this nicely (and some more than others).

location of pot i found was at f-10/f9, i recall a well nearby (not the paladin one btw).
also, i did this quest in at least 24 hours of real life time cause i just had to go to work in the morning :/ so ya boo hoo i lost 100 gil and 2 deaths for a very nice pair of sandals ^^.

Ok, a single, decent sized urn with a ???. Got it. Unfortunately my first attempt at exploring Davoi didn't go so well. I went in with Ninja subbed for Tonko: Ichi, only to forget that Bats aggro by sound . . .

Needless to say, a quick hit from a bat dropped my invisible and drew the attention of several angry orcs. Guess I'll bring some Silent Oil next time.

Okay, I really want the Power Sandals so I would just like to confirm a few things about this quest.

1. Since I am planning to just take the Sandals and run, do I have all the time I want to find them? Is the time limit only concerned with getting your money back with the bet? If I bet I will find them in 72 game hours, can I take longer than that to find the Sandals since I don't care about the gil?

2. How many possible locations are known for finding the urn in Davoi? I did the last part of the Paladin quest solo using a couple Silent Oils and Prism Powders. If I know where to look, could I do that to find the urn?

3. The Brady Games guide claims that the quest can be started as long as you are Rank 3. Do you need fame in Selbina in addition to this to start the quest?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

1. Yes you can take all the time you want. I like to think that guy is still waiting for me to return the sandals.

2. You will not likely find the jar with a couple Silent Oils and prism powders. I came as a WHM. The "Jar" is in the last place i looked, (throught the monastic cavern) I must have recasted sneak ~40 times and invisible ~60 times.

3. Once again the brady games strategy guide is just plain wrong. It takes selbina fame. I have no idea how much. But seriously, max your selbina, bastok, sandoria, Jeuno and Rabao fame by doing this quest. It only takes a few hours with warp and chocobos.
