Just wanna say this quest isn't even remotely soloable, even trying to gather the 3 items. Bring a friend. Really dumb to have something like this still in a game.

Is it safe to say that you can Solo this quest at Level 50 (THF/DNC) just by clicking the ???'s at their respective locations?

just did this quest today with the help of Leviathon on the Sylph server...
I felt like I needed to post the results of today: 1/1 Exoray Mold, 1/1 Ancient Papyrus, and 1/1 Bomb Cole... got the drop on the first kill for every mob

neither one of us was thf, or had thf subbed... good luck to the rest ^^

We did Citadel and Crawlers today. I was PLD50/WAR25 and i had two nearly level 50 red mages with me. Second rdm was subbing thief. We killed only one Explosure in Citadel and it dropped TWO coals. First Exoray also dropped mold. We had good luck. Tomorrow doing Necropolis. Hopefully it will be fast. I'm so tired of being stuck at 50.

What server are you on? People will help. I know I would mainly cuz I need to skill up my Staff (cap it, already got the all the WS for it) on BLM >.>

Ran a buddy through this last night. I went as 75 rdm/nin and had absolutely no troubles. The mold and coal dropped on the first mob and the papyrus dropped on the 5th. If you want to make finding liches easy definately go through the glacier entrance to batallia downs and enter the necropolis there. Travel time forced us to take about an hour and a half on this quest but we only spent about 20min actually killing mobs.

Last night I decided to enlist some help for this mission and, while I won't bore you with the details and the ubiquitous "z0mg! teh drop rates SUCK" type of post... suffice it to say that I spent 3.5 hours hunting Exorays with a couple of 60-75 cycling in to lend much appreciated hands. I managed to get all three items in about 5 hours and when I'm doing my morning websurfing, what do I see on the official Playonline page?

With the current level of advancement of the majority of the player base, it has become increasingly difficult to find fellow adventurers who have yet to complete the limit break quests. In an effort to alleviate the woes of newer players, the limit break quests from level 50 to level 60 will have their difficulty reduced in the following manner:

Level 50 "In Defiant Challenge"
Drop rates for the quest items will be improved.

Level 55 "Atop the Highest Mountains"
The relative strength of the quest monsters will be reduced so that a party of six level 51 characters will be able to defeat them.

Ok, I am behind on the times and just found out about this quest when I hit 50 so I'm kinda scrambling to get the items so I can continue leveling.
Here's how last night went...
Myself SAM 50, Madtown RDM 50 and the wonderful Conecee RDM 75 set out to get the two of us our items.

1) Crawlers nest - 1st item dropped off the 5-6th mob we fought, woo hoo.....took and hour and a half more to get the second drop for Madtown. We we're starting to get a little frustrated and then there it was. Yay! On to.....

2) Gartlaige Citadale - Unbelievably the very 1st mob we fought actually dropped 2ea of the bomb core. Hot Damn! Things were looking great so we then headed on to ...

3) Eldieme Necropolis - This was a bum rush....We got aggroed like crazy, at some really bad times sneak would drop, at one point Mad and I were dead and Conecee along with a high lvl bard took on 4 total Fallen Mages and Soldiers and wiped the floor with them. We had fun laying there whilst dead and watching the whole thing. I can't wait to reach 75....Anyway, we didn't get the drop after several kills so I think we're going back tonight and will try again.

That's it for now, I'll try to update and let you know how long it took to get the last item.

went to help someone do a gate breech in gar.citidel.(why i was just bored sitting in juneo looking for xp party at 48. party was 1 beast master, 1 red mage,white mage, and myself as blackmage/whitemage.
we step on the platforms and open the gates and he gets his old gloves from a chest and the red mage is so happy to get his artifact gloves. he said he wanted to help me out for helping him with the platforms. and they took me down to crawler's nest and started killing exorays. about 8-9 exorays later the mold drops. 1/3.

2cd gar.citidel gate breech. a ninja and red mage send a shout out in gar.citidel. my xp party has just left and i warped them home when i hear the shout. so i go help them open the gate. so they can kill guardian doll monster.
2 skeletons jump me while they are fighting doll monster. i take off running down the hall. by kiting the skeletons away the ninja finishes off the guardian and the red mage raises me later. they asked if i needed help getting the gloves and i told them i needed a bomb coal. we go to a room full of bomb explosures they tell me to wait and go to straight melee against it. got drop of 2 bomb coals on first one in gar.citidel .2/3

last one i called for help in lower jeuno. no response. i choco down to battilla downs. enter the wrong hole to elder necropolis. got killed. searched for whoever was in elder necropolis at the time there was 1 level 62 monk jerdog in the whole area. he's down there farming bone chips or something i dunno with his faithful npc casting cures on him. anyways he agrees to party me but i'm in the wrong hole searching for him and the lich.
finally i link up with him at j-9 battila downs and we get horrible links with the lich and fallen knight by shiva and leithian gate. both of us die. i home point come back and raise him and die again down there when my sneak wears off at wrong time. and he suggests we get more help and i'm tired of dying down there so i told him i'd come back tommorow and try again.
came back the next night and found a blue mage 63 down there soloing who agrees to help. first lich went kinda nasty left us both totally drained of mana and cursed. i was using fire 2, thunder 2, fireaga, throwing everything i had at it.he was using spirits within, magic fruit and some pretty heavy damage attacks. 2cd lich i got the idea to use silence as first move. this worked great. once the lich was silenced the blue mage had enough time to kick its butt before it could spell us. 3rd lich i unleash a freeze attack hoping to make this a easy fight. 790 damage and it did'nt kill it just made it mad at me. the lich unloaded a tornado doing 590 damage about killing me.(thanks for the magic fruit saved me again. after resting up. went over to the other side of gate. killed 2 more lichs and a fallen knight. got the drop on the 5th lich. 3/3.

so my rules for lich killing are always use silence, keep in mind that fire 2 and thunder 2 and fireaga are useful tools. you'll need at least 1 high level tank. probably would have been far easier if i could have made a full party.

a debuffer might have helped with getting rid of the ice spikes on lich.
i had white mage subbed for invis,sneak and throwing the cure 3's on the blue mage. did'nt use banish spells as fire 2 is more effective for me at current levels.

Here's my personal suggestion for the mold and papyrus:

1. Don't try to take the easy route. For the paper, go to the entrance that's Glacier >> Batallia >> Necropolis. I have gone in that way 10 or 11 times now, and each time the first or second lich drops a paper. We're talking NO TH, NO 'luck' items, etc. etc. Only once going in through that way did I get it on like fifth or sixth. In addition to this, instead of worrying about everything aggroing you from all sides, there's one wolf that comes relatively close to the stair area where you would camp at. One. Easily avoided.

2. The same applies basically to the mold. Go into the deeper part of CN, the way to the back exit into Rolan. Fields, where you RDM AF2 is, etc. etc. Go to the one of the circular rooms in the W/NW area where the exorays spawn. Kill those, and only those. While it's never been the first or second 'shroom that i'll get a mold...it's within 10 mobs, and a hell of a lot faster than killing in the big basement area.

I can't explain it, but if I had to rationalize it...I would say that it has something to do with these mobs in these specific areas never being killed...although it doesn't follow the known facts about treasure drop rates. Give it a try next time you're out hunting for G1.

Do you have to do the quest for each of your job you wish to lvl above 50 or just once for that charter? Just not real sure about that

if i buff up with many spells, smoke a joint, and down 19 beers...will these guys still be able to kill a little 50WHM/25BLM such as myself? i only ask because after the 15th beer or so i start thinking that maybe i just might be able to pull it off...kinda like superman.

I went into the Necropolis and there happened to be 5 lv 75's standing at the door who asked to help me. They killed a lich and it dropped 8 papyrus's! Then we went to CN and 8 molds in one kill omg! And then Garlaige and.... guess what? 8 bomb ash!

Seriously guys, can we get some intelligent posts on here? No one cares about your stories of good fortune. They make everyone feel worse. If you want to make the world a worse place, keep posting them. Otherwise, stfu unless you have something informative to say.

I offten help out with this quest when I'm not bissy or just bord.

But as always the hardest item to get is the Ancient Papyrus.
I must have spent 4 hours in ther trying to get it.
And we was killing fast as well, what with me lvl 70whm and a lvl 70drk and my npc and a lvl 50 rdm.

Best part was my npc lvled up twice.
And I've got skill up on my club XD

this was the easiest quest i've ever had someone else do {/grin}. i got the mold from another pt exping off them, they invited me and let me lot ^^. the bomb coal was easy {Flare II} {Arcana Killer} {Too weak}. the papyrus is hard, i know, but i got it on the second lich O.o and then when i {Escape}d, it was snowing in batallia downs!!! that is the best luck i've ever had in this game, b/c i finished up SMN too ^^.

These people helped for 6 hours, and for free. yet more jp players that lend a hand for the act of helping^^

Tips:
don't reject any high lvl help b/c they're not thieves. easy drops.
offering gil will get more responses, but don't offer more than 10k. i even heard a 68 shouting 10k? seriously? i got help with that for 6k!
Don't quit because you cant get the items. they will come eventually, and if they don't, then accept you're level cap is 50! get them all to 50!
the longest part of this quest was getting 50 btw >.> (2 yrs.)

From what i read you would have better luck getting the drop rate with you have the Quest active.

I'm on Remora Server would anybody thats bored mind helping me get the last 2 LB1 items i need

I did these monsters with several different members of our community. I spent many days trying to get the paper drop. I can tell you from my experience that having a high level thf did me no good. I got these drops without a thf. I had a high lvl thf try to help me with each item to no avail. As many have found out the paper is the hardest to get. I want to thank Raventoe rdm/? and Darknessfury drk/? for finaly helping me with the paper. I spent several long nights trying to get it.

If your NPC-buddy is leveled and you got patience. I'm a casual player and when I'm online I'm leveling my NPC-buddy (and myself) most of the time. I haven't been in a exp-party since my RDM got to level 41. When I hit level 48 with my RDM I thought, well lets kill some Liches mayby I will get the papyrus drop, so after 2 weeks (did also do some other things) and about 20 liches (and some deaths) I got the drop from a VT lich. I did the kills entirely with my NPC-buddy who was level 47 at that time.
Me happy and thinking lets play around in crawlers nest with the Exorays, the first VT Exoray I kill drops the mold :-)
After that I went to Carlaige Citadel. I had only been ther once for a EXP-party in my 30's, a very bad experience indeed (this was before the despawing patch). I went to Banishing gate #1 and when I arrived I saw 3 people standing on the levels so I go standing on the fourth and the gate opens, that went smooth. Now I had to find the explosures, I found them very soon. Tried to find a safe spot and ended up in the intersection between the 2 rooms with explosures. One explosure aggroed me, I killed it and it dropped the coal :-) Then another Explosure aggroed and killed me but I didn't care I got my drop.

I'm now level 49 (almost halfway) and my NPC is now level 48 and I'm happy and don't have to worry about Genkai I again. Now I'm worrying about Genkai II instead, seems alot more difficult to do then the other Genkais.

First I went to GC with a friend. First kill we got drop then I had to gtg and logged on a safe spot. But what I forgot was my Warp Cudgel wasnt rdy and no sneak oils... So I logged on and then a Chamber Beetle aggros me! I get /panic >.< I use invincible then warp out... Then I went to CN with a friend and rammed all the exorays and got drop after a while. Then the nightmare come >.< Eldieme... I got a MNK75 and a WHM59. First a Lich Quaked me for 896dmg(something that) and I died and dlvld.. <.< I got raise and we started kill Liches again. Then I fall down at the skulls in the large rooms! I use my Instant Warp directly lol. I had luck that I had sneak on ^^ Then we went back and killed and killed but no drop... Then the MNK gets a friend, NIN/THF. HE kills a lich and drop lol. I hate that quest.. but hey I got level cap raised!

P.S The MNK said he knewd many that quit playing for that paper, dont do it! It will come someday! ^^

PLD lvl 50.

Completed this quest over the weekend. I'm convinced that a competent party around lvl 50 could obtain the Bomb Coal, and Exoray Mold. The Ancient Papyrus however...

Lemme start at the beginning. I originally obtained the Mold while lvl'ing my PLD in Crawler's Nest at around lvl 46. That was a little while ago, and though it was a tuff fight, it was not impossible. This weekend i sent out a shout in Jeuno looking for help and asking others that might also need it.

All Props to Kimy(RDM), and Littlecharger(PLD). I received a tell from Kimy, and the the two of them agreed to help. Both were 70+. Since I had Mold we started off at Garlaige Citadel. Luckily there was a party camped near first banishing gate, so fourth person was eassy to find, to open gate. Ran down the tunnel to the right, and there were 3 Explosures. Coal dropped on first kill. I honestly believe that like the Mold this would not be impossible fight for a competent party. At lvl 50 the conned "Tough" to me. Back to Jeuno, and out to Battalia Downs.

We ran to the southern most entrance to Eldieme Necropolis. They asked me stay near entrance since the undead swarm here, and proceeded to slaughter Lich's. Now this took a little bit. They killed at least a dozen or so before Papyrus finally dropped. Now the fact that Littlecharger was PLD definitely helped, but even so the Lich's did more damage than the Explosure, or Exoray could have. And this part I think is where a little help goes a long way!!

Anyway, got back to Ru'Lude Gardens and "Broke the Horizon" !!

i dont get the point of this its really hard to get the drops and its also really hard to get help :(

Finally did it to, thanks to Arielis.

We got the bomb coal on the 2nd kill, the mold on the 4th.
The papyrus however was hard!
We didn't get it during the first 90 mins. We both had to log off, so we tried again 2 days later at the beaucidine entrance this time.
Again, no drop during 90 minutes... We were complaining about how ridiculous this was, and then it dropped! lol

Really happy here :P

Alright..this may be a really stupid post..but this puts a rest to all these rumors...YOU MUST BE LVL 50 TO ACCESS THIS QUEST !!! I was lvl 50 going for my coal..got killed by the bomb..and de-lvled..and couldn't access the quest. Sure enough..when i got back to 50 ..I could... so short but sweet..ya gotta gotta gotta be lvl 50 !!!

Ok Bomb Coal.... ehh 20 mins killed about 4-5 i guess to get the coal X2... 75 Nin tanking= Np...
ok Exoray Mold..... 45 mins killed about 20 for the mold... so not too bad had a 61 PLD, 63 NIN, 73 BLM helping Papyrus.......................................... 4 hrs later..me, 54THF, 61 PLD, 71 RDM, 50 RDM, 61 DRK, 73 BLM, 71 BLM... FINALLY get one but the other person was there longer so i let him have and 5 kills later we got another one...

MAAT I HATE U!!!!!
