Not fun at all. Eldieme Necropolis is not a fun place. I spent 5 hours there last night killing liches without a drop in a well balanced party.

Really, I'm thinking of just hiring some higher level people to do it for me--I'll stand at the entrance and synth while higher level people go in and kill/maim liches until I get a drop.

I've been to the CN and killing exorays for hours seems to be easy but tedious. I've heard the bomb coal isn't much of a problem either--with the exception of explode.

Maybe Eldieme wouldn't be so bad if I could just find a location where we can be relatively safe from links and can somewhat continuously pull liches. I have not yet found such a place. I've heard of a location through Beaucedine Glacier. Does this area have any more promise? We wandered around most of the rest of the necropolis without finding such a place.

Yes, the entrance that requires you to travel through Beaucedine Glacier is like that. You can camp right near the zone, and the Liches are not too far from there, so you can just pull them back to your camp easily.
Hmmm really hard? I think not.

Ok.... for all of you that all the items in no time at all, this is all I have to say to you... t(-_-t) Actually not really. Congratulations. I wish mine was that easy to get. Heres a run down of mine experience:

Bomb Coal:
Hahahahaha.... First mob we kill drops it. Second mob we kill drops another one... third mob we kill drops 2. Hurray for us!

Exoray Mold:
This is probably the second most annoying drop to get. Keep in mind with the correct party set up (Healer & THF...all that jazz) it makes things easier theoretically. Anyway, this drop took my party about 3 hrs for 2. Not so bad considering. Best location is near the secret room. There's a room full of these mushroom menaces.... (God, that was bad) Anyway, item 2 done. Yay!

Ancient Papyrus:
Um... words cannot express the torment I went through to not get this.. Heres my experience so far -
Hour 1 - Nothing
Hour 2 - Nothing
Hour 3 - Nothing
Hour 4 - Nothing
Hour 5 - Nothing
Hour 6 - Nothing
Hour 7 - In bed sleeping
Party set up was lvl 60 THF, 48 THF (me), 61 WHM, 50 RDM, 50 DRG. Anyway, we had enough TH2 to go around so who knows. Guess it wasnt our lucky day. I'm heading back out tonight to try and get it again. Well its good to know that this hellish quest has lived up to its name for me. Anyway to reinstate what I said before, if this quest only took you 3 hrs t(-_-t).. I mean congratulations.
got it

So after watching my roommate do genkai 1 for almost a week, I was dreading my turn at death and bad luck. This message board also gave me the heebie jeebies because of all the horror stories from people who have been searching for the papyrus since April, and still haven't found it...

I joined up last night with one of my linkshell mates, Cornelias from NobleHearts on the Fairy server, and proceeded to put a party together for the Exoray Mold. Cornelias came as level 50 PLD and i as a level 50 WHM. Cornelias' friend Chely, another 50 WHM, came along for the ride for about half an hour (she already had the items). We picked up Girgizzlemuf, a 49 RDM, and I began to shout in Lower Jeuno for additional members. I get one tell in twenty minutes of doing this, and its a THF. We assume that we should be golden and go out to Crawler's Nest to attempt the Exorays with four people. We chatter about how me might actually get some experience and our THF tells us that the Exorays con as too weak to her (her name was Saeryn by the way). The three of us fall quiet and slowly begin to speak up..."Errr, what level are you Saeryn?" She replies "75". It turns out she didn't have much to do and decided to take pity on us. Needless to say I was extremely happy. We camped in a tunnel in Crawler's Nest just off the big room that also leads to the secret room. Plenty of Exoray spawns on both sides of it. It took us about 45 minutes to get all three that we needed. We w00t and holler and Saeryn bows and runs away, saying "congrats" and "np" as we spammed her with "Thank you" via party chat and tells. One down two to go.

We head back to Jeuno and there are three of us still, Cornelias, Girgizzlemuf, and myself. After about half an hour of looking, we decide to try the Explosures with just us 3. Cornelias had already obtained the coal the day before, but he wanted to help out and knew that we were lost without a tank. As I'm about to leave Jeuno and head to Garliage Citadel, I find a level 48 MNK lfg named Galldrin. He joins us quickly and we all meet at "Garbage Citadel". As we go towards the first banishing gate we get a little beetle agro and handle them in an expedient manner. We reach the first banishing gate and step on the appropriate plates to open the door. Once through, I begin to med and a couple of players by the name of Andvari and Vashxxx (something or the other, sorry) ask if they can join us. Seems they needed help opening the second banishing gate so that Vashxxx could get the PLD AF item out of the coffer. They offer in turn to help us get the coal first. We find an explosure, kill it very quickly (it doesn't have a chance to blow up on us), and it drops three coals. We run back to let them through the door and the player obtains his item from the coffer. We exchange pleasantries and then teleport out of there when Cornelias get bat agro from two sets of citadel bats. Two down and one to go.

So far this has taken about 3 1/2 hours. Cornelias needs to log out and wishes us good luck on the Ancient Papyrus. So now there is myself, Girgizzlemuf, and Galldrin. While running around Ru'Lude Gardens showing Cornelias where Maat is, I get an invite to join a party heading to Eldieme Necropolis for the paper. I laugh a little, and invite them to form an alliance. At this point we have 7 people in the alliance and decide to try the southern most entrance to Eldieme Necropolis from Batallia Downs. A higher level friend of mine said he had gotten his paper there, and we head in to check it out (i was just feeling too lazy to go the Ranguemont Pass ----> Beaucedine Glacier ----> Batallia Downs route). We manage to get up to an area where Shiva's Gate is located, and the door is firmly shut. Galldrin our MNK says that there are lichs behind the door and sets off to see if he can find a lever to open the door. And a couple minutes later he is dead. He HP's back to Jeuno and begins running back to our position. Now for some reason, after Galldrin had died, the door opened up and we see a group of Lichs as well as some other random skeleton mobs. We pull the first lich and everything is going smoothly. When the second lich is being pulled, i notice that the party is way tooooo close to the mobs and I tell them to back up to my position...and then it happens. AGRO!! A lich, a skeleton warrior of some sort, and a hell hound. Everyone dies and we HP back to Jeuno. We then decide on the Beaucedine Glacier route, and two of us take the Airship to Sandy, and I teleport the rest of us to Holla. Choco to East Ronfaurre and into Ranguemont Pass. We run through killing random things along the way (because meleeing as a WHM is fun)and reach Beaucedine Glacier. Thank god that Girgizzlemuf had a map, and we run through there relatively okay, getting a little agro from Goblin Traders. Once we zone over to Batallia Downs we run into the first entrance to Eldieme Necropolis we see. We run down the flight of stairs and come to a landing. We set up camp there and our BLM/SMN, Keffka, uses Carby, Titan, and Ifrit to pull a steady stream of Lichs. The Ancient Papyrus drops on the fourth mob and I win the lot. WOOT!! All three items in about 5 hours. I stay on for another hour or so, helping the party try and get all their papers. I plan on logging in tonight and tomorrow night and helping them attain the Ancient Papyrus. Thanks also to Wolfenstein, Akard, and I forgot the name of our 7th, sorry.

Limit Break 1 can be achieved with just a little faith, alot of caffeine, and much love for this game. Good luck to all of you in your efforts to get these items.

Good info guys. Thanks. Im 47 Red now and looking to the future and G1. I have already had a Exory Mold drop while lvling in CN. Im pretty sure my LS will pitch in on the "paper route" in the next couple of weeks.

Food for thought. Think how the Japanese players got thier drops when there were no high lvl players. Guess at lvl50 they had to do it the hard way with full party and/or alliance. Sound like fun? ^&^

Well this was one long quest...makes me wish i did choco quest over and over again.

Mold: In party, we needed 4 molds, first 5 exorays drop 3, i didnt get mine (crappy lots), then no more drops for 3 hours, go to leave, last fight, there dropped! We had a thf in pt!

Papyrus: Entered Necropolis through Beaucedine
Hour 1: no drops, needed 4
Hour 2: Alliance formed with another pt in diff section of Necropolis, no drops, now needed 5
Hour 3: Alliance joins r area, 1 drop on Iceday
Hour 4: No drops
Hour 5: 1 drop, cant remember the day
Hour 6: 1 drop(i win the lot) Darksday
Hour 7: no drops, ended up leaving
I spent 7 Vana'diel days and didnt notice a diff in the days, we had a thf as well, i took time to look at the moon, and it was below 45% the entire time, not sure if its relavent or not!

Bomb Coal: Took for ever to get ppl to help, finaly a JP Bst offered help, with another English Bst, took 2 fights and got drop. No thf!

Well that was my experience, lots of ppl get them quickly, i wasn't, so for anyone who hasn't done this before this is one possible senerio that can happen. I'd like to thx anyone who helped me out on the Ramuh server!

Well! I just rocked this quest. And they say this is the hardest one in the whole game! hahahahah.

I guess my recommendation for those having problems with becoming a "Horizon Breaker" is to consider thf or using thf sub. I used SAM/THF and it seemed to help a lot. Whole quest completed in 3 days, one item per day. Thanks all who helped me.

I guess I totally lucked out with the ancient papyrus. The high levels on my LS announced they were doing a papyrus run and ordered me to come along (RDM46 at the time). As it was 2AM, I was hesitant but they insisted saying, "Dude! The papyrus is the hardest one! Don't be stupid!"

Since the easiest place to hunt for liches in high numbers is the area only accessible from Beaucidine Glacier, we took a quick detour to get the Vahzl crystal.

FYI : to get to this area, go from East Ronfaure > Ranguemont Pass > Beaucidine Glaicer > Battalia Downs > Eldieme Necropolis. You'll end up in a small, isolated area. There should be a tunnel that makes a good camp to pull liches to.

Anyway, we get there and the PLD69, BLM70, and THF65 start going on a rampage. The first 3 liches we kill, we get the 2 papyri we needed. Meanwhile, I Raise a poor pt of 6 we found stone dead in the tunnel. They needed 3 papyri, so my team decided to help them out, since our own group had uncanny luck.

It was amazing watching my LS work. My sole job was Refresh them once in a while and Dispel the ice spikes... not because they were doing any damage, but because the noise was irritating the PLD.

We got all 3 drops in the next 30 mins. So that's 5 papyri in about 35 minutes of actual fighting. Thank Altana for helpful high levels!

RE: Location...

Um... lets see here. Explosures are found past the first banishing gate in the Citidel (i really dont remeber the pos on it but it's not to far from the gate). Exo's are found around the area by the secret room entrance in Crawlers Nest. And, Liches (hardest item) are all around Eldieme. Unless you get some high levels or a really good pt to help you with paper, then your kinda screwed ^^

Bomb coal... 1 kill
Exoray Mold... 1 kill
Paper... 15 kills

Ok, I figured I would share with you all my experiences. I actually was really dreading this quest, but it turned out to be a good experience for me.

Exoray- It was me (50SAM), a 51RNG and a 66WAR. I had gone after this a few times, once in a group of 8, all around level 50. With that group, we spent our time in the Exoray Room, where there are 4 spawn points as well as one down the tunnel that is the entrance/exit I believe. It got pretty hectic at times as they would spawn and aggro/link and we'd end up killing all of them in rapid succession. We didn't have any deaths, which was good, however we also only got one mold in about 90 minutes. The second time, with the 2 fellows mentioned previously, we got it on our second or third exo. The only problem is the RNGs sneak fell in a place where he couldn't go anywhere, and he got aggro'd by a Soldier Crawler. The 66WAR and I were up further ahead, engaged with an Exo. I ended up switching to Great Katana (I had been using Polearm to try to level it previously), and using my Meikyo Shisui to end it quickly. We killed the Exo, it dropped the mold, and we high-tailed it back to the RNGs location. The WAR voked it, we proceeded to pound its bug face in, and then I took the time to lot for the mold. Luckily I had used my 2-hour, as the RNG was down to 64 hp when we got there, so that 3 seconds or so sooner it made us actually turned out to be a difference maker.

Bomb Coal- Went with the same 66WAR and 51RNG for this one, and we tracked down the services of a 56RDM as well. We snuck down to where the Explosures are, fought and killed a Droma to build up some TP, and then the WAR pulled an Explosure and we proceeded to own it, dropped the coal, easy enough. Be aware of self-destruct, as I have heard it can be quite devastating sometimes. We later did this for some other people, and the Explosure self-destructed, but luckily we all took 120-220 damage, and nobody was in any danger. I believe how much HP they have left then they self-destruct may have an effect on the damage it does, much like Mijin Gakure. Just be sure you have a way to keep sneak on, as the bats will aggro to sound, and also the undead. Also, make sure nobody is in the yellow hp, as the undead will aggro on that as well (we learned a harsh lesson about that going after the monument another time).

Ancient Papyrus- This is the one everyone says is pure hell to get. We went in an alliance of 7 people. 66WAR (man do I owe this guy a lot), 50SAM, 53DRK, 50MNK, 52SMN, 51RDM and 48WHM. We were aiming to get three, one for me, the MNK, and the WHM. I was settled in to spend pretty much my entire night on this. We went to the entrance that is accesible only through Beaucedine Glacier, as the Lichs there check Tough to 50s, instead of IT++ as I have heard they do in other places. Well, long story short, we got 3 sheets in about an hour to an hour and a half.

During all three of these expeditions, we had no THF in the party. I did sub my level 15THF however. Most people will tell you that TH1 is useless for Rare drops. They very well may be right, but you really have nothing to lose subbing THF if you have it at 15 or higher. I suppose if you are going after it in a group of 50s or so you might not want to go in under-subbed or improperly subbed. But if you have the high-level help, I think you might as well go for it. We got 3 papers in less than 90 minutes, and after all the horror stories I have heard about this quest, I must say it might be worth giving it a go to sub THF if possible. Of course, a 45+ THF with TH2 would really help, but I have found they are not always the most generous when it comes to giving aid.

Good luck and happy hunting. If you're ever on caitsith, feel free to drop me a /tell.

Edit: Grammar, spelling, coherence, all that good gobble-dee-****.

I finally finished this today, and I'm so friggin glad I could go run around the block.^^ The bomb coal: super-easy, drops 1 or 2 per bomb every time (in pts I was in); mold: a little harder but not much, especially considering it was a new moon, which is probably absolute worst time for drops like this; and then the dreaded papyrus: after 3 pts exclusively for this item, I finally got it, dying a total of 4 times. If you aren't prepared, Eldieme Necropolis will eat you for lunch. I tried both entrances (J-10 at Batallia and the entrance from Beaucedine) and got the drop from the Batallia side. We just made loops through it, stopping at each intersection and killing the Lichs, then moving (and sneaking) on. And even though it was new moon, got the drop after about 20 lichs. Had one thf with TH2 and I had TH1 with my thf sub. Very glad it's over with, and once again let me say, BE PREPARED when you go to the Necropolis or you will regret it. (Even when you are prepared, it's easy for the sh*t to hit the fan in there.) Good luck to everyone, and if you're on the Lakshmi server and need help, feel free to send me a /tell.^^

*lunacy ensues* AAAAAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA PLEEEEAAASE GOD HEEEELELELP MEEEEEE!!! I'll say this: NO M@$#%E#F$@%ING WAY!! 10+hours, almost 200 Liches killed.. and TADAH, no drop. With 3 TH2s some of the time!!!! Obviously SE is going to make this crap take as long as possible, the longer people play, the more money they make. But whats messed up is when they do inhumane bulls#$% like this. This is cruel, unjustified torture. Completly unnecessary. I swear there has to be some diabolical, sick, demented catch to this. Perhaps day or moonphase, maybe the level of members in your party... I know. It makes it even worse that SE can't even give a hint as to what this catch would be. So, if anyone can remember the times when this Ancient Papyrus was actually dropping at a steady rate, what was the time and all that jazz, day/moon phase, %/lv.party/members in group/number of THs. Seriously, this little b*!%$@ is going to end me up in the loonybin.

i guess i got kinda lucky with GK1, i got mold while xping, i got bomb coal when i saw someone putting a pt together to get it (had a high lvl guy helping the pt leader, it took all of 10 minutes to get the 3 of us bomb coals), and then for paper i paid a high level mnk 20k to grab it for me. luckily he had a 25 thf he could sub, so we went into eldieme, ran around for about 45 minutes laying waste to liches (with his awesome damage output on bones and my cure haste and refreshing myself, we were kicking ***), and then i got the drop. lotted for it, paid him, and i was on my merry way ^^

my advice to anyone having trouble with paper? just /sea all high lvl plds or mnks, and offer to pay em 20-30k to grab you papyrus (and maybe a little bit of money just for their time, in case you don't get the drop). its a lot easier then waiting around and trying to form a pt, and worrying about lots...

When I read these posts prior to doing my limit 1 quest, I had my hopes up because alot of the people post 3 papers in 2 hours and good numbers like that. Let me tell you that this quest is very hard, and most people will spend a good deal of time on it. Personally, I killed around 40 liches before even seeing one paper drop. Luckily my uber lotting skills landed me a 998 ^^ I have killed around 30-40 Exorays w/o one mold. God willing, I will have my mold tonight or tomorrow. The bomb coal is easy, only a matter of making a party to go get it.

Got coal in 2 kills, Mold in 10 kills, and Paper in 5 kills. In all three cases I had help from LS members who were in the 60s and 70s. Had DRG for Coal, DRG and WHM for Mold, and THF, WHM, and PLD for Paper.
