I asked some people in my linkshell to help, i'm at 49 and another lvl 50 needs all his items too. We start with the mold. Party is 63Pld, 53Drk, 59Rdm, 50Pld and me 49Blm. It took about 10 kills to get 2 molds to drop 1 dropped on an aggro kill. We then head to garliage adding another 60Rdm to the group. We kill 2 explosures and are done, took longer to get from jueno to garliage than it did to get the coal. Last we add some more people from the LS for the papyrus expecting it to be the hardest. So we have 63pld, 63whm, 60sam, 60rdm, 59rdm, 59brd, 53drk, 51blm, 50pld and me 49blm. Getting to camp someone looses sneak and gets aggro, the 51blm dies and in the fight a lich joins in and gets killed, 1 drop from him. We tractor the blm in and raise 2 him, after healing up we start pulling within 2 lichs we had the 2nd drop. So we got 2 people all 3 items in a matter of 4 hours, most of that being spent traveling from area to area.

Ok I've been doing this for a week now.. heres how i've done

Day 1: After an hour of seeking.. i head to Necropolis. We go through the glacier and we have a good time wacking many a lich. We had high level help. Well. after maybe 4 hours.. no drops, its 2AM and i need some sleep by that time.

Day 2: I try Necropolis again. I only seek for a half hour this time and we really romp those liches. well I saw 4 drops, of course i dont get any of em.

Later in teh day I head to the nest, about an hour of searching involved. I don't get any of the drops out of the 5....

Day 3: I try to go to Garlaige this time. Well I form a very promising party. Too bad someone pulled that nm that was running around....needless to say we all died. and that ended that.

later that night i went to the evil lich place... or tried to... we all died before we fought anything.....

Day 4: I head to Nest again. This time i get the drop in the 3rd kill. well i was very happy.. but well, soon after i got bad lag while pulling, and i died...well i got raised... and i went to open that stone door and hide behidn it...well, right before i do.. BAM! exoray uses darkspore.. Katz takes "place large number here, starting witha 6" and i died again.

Day 5: I form a party to go to garlage... but whats this? one member out of everyoen dosent need the coal? *everyone needed the paper, but no one had enough time for it* well this selfish redmage ruined a full 2 hours of gettign a promising party together.. *bard and everything*

Day 6: I head over to necropolis. This time i finally live long enough to get vhalz crystal. well, Im there in the pit fighting liches for a good 3 hours before i go. no drops. It took us maybe 2 hours to actually get there....

Day 7: I stayed in necropolis and i got a party... 5 minutes after i joined.. good thing alos.. since it took them a good 2 hours to actually get to the place. after a while of fighting.. 1 drop.. I lotted for 870.. and this otehr guy failed the lot.. well i was quite happy.. until, someone lots for 898... this person was also afk for a hour, and in no way deserved to get the item *it was the first mob we faught after he got back* party broke 30 minutes later...

alot of helpful and informative posts on here, i wont go into as much detail with my genkai 1 experience but here goes... as soom have mentioned, it's best to get crackin' on this quest at the earliest possible lvl; nothing worse than struggling for all 3 items at 50 ; ; i started at about 49, and i am now 50 with all items... except ancient papyrus ><! to reccap on the other items a lil bomb coal>>fairly simple, the most difficult part about that item was getting a small alliance to the camp sight without losing sneak (which we did, alot lol)mold>>now this 1 must be a hit or miss, cuz apparently alot of people find this to be fairly quick drop; while others like myself had to camp exos in the exo tunnel of crawler's for about 4-5 days before getting this item. and now for the grand daddy of em all... the papy. now there's alota "strategys" out there.. ive tried the reinvite player during battle technique (unsuccessful, tho i only tried it once) and i've also been in genkai pts that believed that when a mage casts a fire spell against a lich, it decreases the chance of drop (lol) needless to say ive come to my own conclusion that this drop is merely pure 100% 'ol fashion luck.. how else can you explain camping liches for 7 hrs, no drop, next day, a lvl 47 in yur pt gets drop on the first fight. regardless no matter how u see it, papy is truely a @#$% to get, i just hope i get mine soon /cry

I've been at this quest for about a week and a half now, i have the mold and the coal, but the damn papyrus is just getting me angry at the game, im supposed to have fun, not be stuck at Lv50 and keep waiting for help and not even enjoy this game anymore, anyway, I hope i get this soon before i get to the point where i wanna quit.

i felt the same way about quiting. i still have none of the 3 items, shtoooopid high lvls all want gil, 50K a drop for this..... so my pld friend got to lvl 60 and got his Full AF and all and he is helping me for free.

Yes get mad at the game, it hates you, it wants to take my preciousssss from me.

Bah! Ok im losing my mind becuz my lack of gil and help sorry, maybe i will get some help and stop being jealous of plds in AF.
I hate Liches.

After a week of trying to get that damned Papyrus, I finally got it. I was in a party where 5/6 players needed the papyrus, and only one dropped after 4 hours of hunting down there -_-

The coal was easiest. The hard part about it is getting to the area with the explosures. The easy part is that we got all 6 people in the party their coal in like, an hour. 3 of the bombs dropped 2 coals ea.

The mold was fairly easy. I got that while leveling in Crawler's Nest in the secret area.

so, i got the mold and the bomb coal by chance, one night a high lvl drg was running by and i saluted her (i make it a point to salute every drg i come accross because i am one myself) and she asked if i needed the mold, invited me to her party, i cast lot and got it. with the coal a friend of mine told me he had some high lvl help so we went and both got our in the first two fights... but this god forsaken papyrus... i havent been able to find a party for help or high lvl help to get this item, im dying inside im so close to being done with this and i just cant seem to get there. if youre on titan server and are willing to help me out, drop me a line

Definatly a rite of passage, and an opportunity for a solo-loving player to meet others.
I finally got the Ancient Papyrus with help from a high-level Paladin (thank you Nestea!), and others helped as well. I met some cool people, and made some connections that will help in the future. This quest is very very frustrating, but the rewards go beyond simply increasing the level cap.

Ancient Papyrus: (75 PAL, 50 THF, 50 RDM, 47 DRK)
We fought Liches in the Southern area of Eldieme Necropolis (the path to the southern island), and got an Ancient Papyrus on the first kill. The second drop came about 45 minutes after the first, and our party was done (only two out of us four needed it). We also did this on a full moon.

Don't give up!!!!!!!!

Haha, well dont get mad guys! But I gotta say this.. i dont understand why everyone is griping about the papyrus.. i got it in 30 min ^^
Its that damn mold thats holding me up right now! I've fought at least a hundred exorays, and never once did i see it drop. plus, i was in a pt of 6, who all needed mold for an hour killing exorays and not one dropped >< this is the frustrating part for me. If anyone is on Ramuh, and planning to go get this, I'll gladly join you (50BLM/25WHM). Thanx!

JESUS CHRIST!... LONG STORY SHORT...

Bomb coal drops almost every kill. Its very easy to get. (Self distruct hits big so keep mages away from the fight.)

Exoray mold isnt quite as easy but you can get a few in couple of hours. They hit hard but they really arent that bad. All you need is a good tank nothing more.

Ancient Papyrus, The bane of all Genkai 1 questers. If ur lucky you can get it in a couple of hours if not (like me) it can take a month. Papyrus is EXTREMELY rare.

None of these mobs warant using an alliance to get the drops.. Just adds to the confusion. Also 7+ people together hunting for papy is silly. Try to get help from people that dont need to get it. Nothing like fighting for 7 hours straight to see papy drop once and not be able to win the lot.

The necropolis is Especially dangerous because if your HP goes yellow, You can end up with 5 Fallen warriors on you and there will be no escape.

One last thing. This may be a rumor but I hear there is truth to it. Papyrus is supposed to have a higher drop rate on iceday. It is also said that if you go to the zone located at: East Ronfaure => Ranguemont pass => Beaucedine Glacier => Batallia Downs => (fall off the first ledge) => Eldieme necropolis. The drop rate in higher.

Hurray for you in restating what countless others have said.

The purpose of my post wasn't to provide tips or strategy, it was simply to chronicle the events leading to my completion of the quest.

Go ahead and rate me down again. I'm confident that I've provided information that others may find useful.

Just an idea though...you could have accomplished the same result in less time had you simply said, "This quest is hard."

This is a long post, but I'd encourage those of you still in the middle of this quest (or even those of you about to start it) to read of my experiences thus far. It may help you be mentally prepared for what is to come.

This is by far the most challenging quest I have encountered or heard of. I know there may be more difficult ones later on, but this one is certainly tough.

I still need Exoray Mold. Almost every exp group I've been with in Crawler's Nest wet their pants at the idea of specifically fighting Exorays to get Mold. I saw perhaps 3 Molds drop the entire time I spent lvling in Crawler's Nest, but we were fighting the Exorays around the secret room and usually only when they aggro'd while pulling a crawler, not in deeper around the ring. (I confess...as the puller, sometimes I would take aim on an Exoray and "/p AGGRO!" if I felt the party was good enough. I never caused any deaths, and there are at least two people on my server that got Exoray Mold because of it)

Edit: I recieved my Exoray Mold tonight. When all was said and done, it took roughly 4 hours to get 6 people their Mold, from the time the party was formed until the last member got what they needed. For the most part, it wasn't overly difficult. We were a 7 member alliance for the majority of the time when a lvl 50 PDN who had already completed the quest came and joined us. (Thanks again, Aivan) Our lvls were 47-50, with 2 PDNs, 1 WAR, THF, WHM, RNG and BLM. Please refer to my list of ideas to ponder towards the end of this post regarding being focussed on the needs of the group. Our BLM spent most of his time AFK without telling us until we finally booted him.

When we were trying to arrange the alliance to make it easier for the WHM, we asked our BLM (who was leader of one of the allied parties) to switch some people around. After a relatively lengthy pause came his response: "huh".

Camping in the short passage leading to the Exoray room, part of the spawn cycle included an Exoray spawning behind our group very near the mages. On at least three seperate occasions, our BLM was afk and either resting or sitting when the Exoray spawned behind him, causing the Exoray to attack him and forcing us into a defensive response rather than an offensive strategy.

We were relying on our BLM to sleep adds, and on one occasion, while fighting one Exoray, another spawned in-camp. Our BLM was AFK. I still don't know how we all survived, but it could have been much worse. Not only was he not present to sleep the add, he wasn't around to cast Escape, either.

On the final occasion before we booted him, our WHM was silenced by one of those nasty AoEs the Exorays have, and our BLM (who was subbing WHM) was once again AFK and didn't contribute to the emergency healing we needed him for.

Obviously, he wasn't contributing. Why go into so much detail on this? This quest is far too challenging and time consuming to tolerate leeches. While everyone else in the group was focused on the task at hand, one selfish person ended up wasting a lot of our time and made parts of our adventures this evening very unpleasant. We probably should have booted him much sooner. I've listed the variety of ways in which he let the party down in the hopes that some of you will be able to use this information to either identify trouble players ASAP and either straighten them out or get rid of them, or make sure you aren't doing the same kind of thing to YOUR group. *end edit*

The first time I ever tried camping Liches I went with a group and we made it safely to where we needed to be. We fought for a while, and our puller got his Papyrus, and promptly got linked by a Ka and a Mummy on his next pull...two people died, and he mysteriously had to leave. That was not cool.

Bomb Coal was actually quite easy for me. I was invited to a full alliance group that two of my LS mates had joined. We obliterated a path through Garlaige until we got to the camp spot and all 18 of us got our Bomb Coal in fairly short order. When you have 18 people beating down on a mob, it generally doesn't last too long.

Then we decided to take the alliance to Eldieme through the glacier. Again, we demolished everything in our path through to Eldieme, and that's where it went to pieces. We never even got around to getting sneak on people once we got to the Necropolis. I had already been here once with a group camping Liches for Papyrus and warned them of the dangers, but after a few hours of mass slaughter, too many in the alliance were overconfident. Looking back on it now, the mass anhialation of our alliance that took place was actually kind of funny. At the time though, it was frustrating because what was once a deadly alliance was now a trail of KOd bodies from the entrance all the way down to the coffin room before the cave. I survived...as soon as I realized what was going on (ie a couple of idiots charging in and everyone else following trying to keep them alive) I exited to Batallia and stood at the entrance trying to convince them to come out, form up, and not be so freaking retarded...but I digress.

I disbanded when I realized there was no hope, and my LS members told me shortly thereafter that I had made the right decision.

I was level 45 then, and I got involved with other things (leveling THF, farming, etc) and it wasn't until today that I really found myself back in the running for a Genkai 1 group. I'm lvl 49 now, and was hoping to find an exp group when someone in Jeuno mentioned they were looking for people to join for the quest. I joined, we headed around through the Glacier again and set up camp at the spot described in other posts here. Everything was going fairly well, despite not having a tank.

Then it went to pieces again. We're buffed up and ready for the next pull, when all of a sudden we see this:

GalkaMonk> someone on tv just said ham sandwich...brb

Three seconds later, in comes our puller with a Lich hot on his trail. Our Galka monk, who up to that point had been tanking, went afk just as our RDM pulled a Lich. We fought and fought, and I ended up dying when the Lich had a sliver of HP left (the rest of the group was asleep). Seconds before the Lich died, the Monk returned and said "ok I'm back now..."

DOH!! >.<

I got a raise, and by now the group was getting a little cranky. The fights were a little tougher than they could have been, we only saw one drop, and then someone drops the ball and gets someone killed.

10 minutes later our puller somehow aggrod a Ka that killed our BLM and our RDM...we had no WHM, so we had no Raise, and that ended that. I returned to Jeuno, put my seek flag up and...within 10 minutes I got invited to an entirely different Gankai 1 group. Talk about crazy luck.

This group was more balanced...we still had no WHM, but we had a PDN, THF, DRG, RDM, BRD, and RNG (me). Once again (for the second time that day) I found myself traveling the Glacier route to Eldieme. We made it to the camp with no problems, and started pulling. The fights went faster, we had a good Skillchain set up, and the party was a FUN party to be in. Most of them knew each other fairly well from the apperance of things, and we did well.

However, we were there for 3-4 hours, and only one drop. I don't need Papyrus anymore...I lotted a 975. But if this group were to ask me to go back with them and hunt Liches some more, I'd go in a heartbeat.

Why did I go into so much detail about this? Because if you're going to take on this quest, if you're going to subject yourself to this kind of thing, you'd best be prepared to ensure the following:

1) You are focused on the group, and what the group needs for success. You don't take stupid risks for the sake of looking cool or being the tough guy. There is no such thing as better safe than sorry in this game...it's better safe than dead.

2) You don't abandon the group after you get what you need. Everyone in the group should be expected to announce how long they anticipate they will be able to stick around before you even leave Jeuno. If you get your quest item and bail, you just made 5 enemies.

3) If at any time in the past you lacked the ability to communicate effectively with a party, whether on combat strategy before or during a fight, or simply how to go AFK without leaving your group in a sticky situation, you will learn it doing this quest or you will not succeed.

This quest is remeniscent of the Selbina sub-job quest, only on a "global" scale. It's the same quest that our JP counterparts had to complete back when there were NO lvl 60+ people to help them, because 50 was the highest level the game would allow. But they managed. They got it done. And I'm sure that for them, the idea of needing 2-3 weeks of camping the same mobs in the same places for 3 drops to move up didn't seem TOO onerous...what else were they going to do with their time?

It's not the same for us now. We may be lvl 45-50, but we're surrounded by lvl 75 players and it kinda puts a little pressure on us, doesn't it? I honestly think Square got a little bit of feedback from our JP counterparts about the difficulty associated with this quest, because based on what I've read and been told, they toned the following Genkai quests down quite a bit.

Nevertheless, it's decision time. Those who have finished the quest, those who are doing it, and those who are reading about it at least have some idea of the challenges involved. This quest alone is probably responsible for more people leaving the game than any other single reason associated with the way the game is set up.

I'm not trying to scare anyone, but if you're gunning for a level beyond 50, I recommend you make sure you're up to the task.

My Theory
# Jun 08 2004 at 1:30 AM Rating: Decent
Everyone knows how much of a pain in the *** this 50 cap quest item is to get... and after doing it myself after a couple of days i was about to quit! So here comes my theory on the drop rate of the Papyrus. You may comment, critizise or even try it yourself. I just hope that it actually works for others like it worked for me.

So i went in Eldieme Necropolis from the Glaciers entrance and joined my ls party already in progress which consisted of 2 of my ls members and 3 other players. The first Lich we killed once i joined guess what drops... the papyrus! So i cast lot and win of course cause im just naturally lucky. Bout an hour goes by and .... nothing... no paper, lots of kills.

By then a friend of mine (Monstercoo) comes in helping 3 others to get a their Papyrus and first kill.... get a drop! So he sends me a tell and I get to thinking, that this cant be a considience.... So I tell my party to let me disband go outside to zone and for them to tell me when they are about to pull another one. They tell me, I go back in and get reinvited, the puller then pulled a lich and what drops.... A Papyrus!

Coinsidence? Maybe? Certainly I thought so, so I tell my LS members what just happened and we try it again except no drop from the second one... but... there was an increase of items dropped by Lich! Did I just run into a secret to obtain the Papryrs?

So we end up trying my method for bout 3 more hours, getting the entire party our Papyrus. Then I joined the other party that was there, explained to them what we have been doing, tried it on the first pull and BAM!!! PAPYRUS!!!

This cannot be just dumb luck.. please ... someone else try this theory of mine! It will not only help you get your papyrus, it will help us all with this headache of a quest!

Thanks

The paper.. 6 hours before we saw the first drop. We had a thief too.
16 hours we saw a second drop.
We saw 3 more drop in 4 more hours, but we didn't have a theif. Of course neither me nor my friend got the paper lots. We both rolled a 5 on one of the lots!

for me i have not yet completed this only because i have no need for another 4 levels ... as a 46THF i was called from a VE camp to join this pt. Within 6 hours we gained 4 papers from what i've seen so far this is a really good pace. for those of you who are reading this post and are near lvl 44-46ish ... start camping exorays for exp, u will definately be glad you did cause in the process u'll likely get ur mold. the bomb is the only thing i have not yet killed ironicly, but as u can see from others past experiences it is not likely to be a problem.. good luck and good hunting ^_-

I just finished this quest... the paper was a pain in the *** to get, but some level 69 blm decided to give us a hand (there were 8 members of my ls working on it) so we were killing 4 liches at a time, and it still took an hour to get the first drop. I we all lotted on it and I won... too bad its such a rare drop, I have been working on it all week with my ls members that still need it so far we have gotten 5 papyrus's. The other items were really easy, bomb coal was such a cakewalk, and the exoray mold was just part of the levelling process so everyone got one of them a few levels before level 50.

Just got all three items yesterday with Zandrox. It took a real time week for most of our LS members looking for the LB1 items (8 of us) to get the paper (3 of the LS members actively trying to finish this still haven't received the paper. Definitely start this quest as early as possible. The liches con T at the most to me (lvl 48), so they still provided decent xp while trying to get the paper, so it wasn't a total waste of time (we had no high lvl help for the most part except for one day when we had 2 lvl 60's helping).

For those trying to find the ideal places to hunt for these items, I'm hoping the following will help you out.

- For liches, enter Eldieme Necropolis from the Northeastern entrance (the one that is only accessible via Beaudecine Glacier). We camped at the bottom of the stairs leading before the hallway turns left. Down the stairs there are two rooms that are adjacent to the main hallway. A lich spawns in each room (along with 2 mummies, but these DO NOT link with the lich once you pull the lich). Further down the stairs is another room with coffins, and 2 liches spawn here...along with 2 mummies. Liches do link with each other, so if pulling from here be careful. If you take the right tunnel from that room, you will come upon a cavern opening with even more liches...however, there are Ka's (shadow-type mobs) that are in this room, so only have an experienced pulled (with silence applied) pull from here if necessary. In the main hallway, hell hounds do spawn, and these are an annoyance, especially their AoE attack (which inflicts disease). From my experience this is by far the rarest drop of the three (and this is with having someone with TH2 in the alliance...I won't get into the whole TH2 affecting rare drops debate found in other threads here :P).

- For the bomb coal, proceed to I-8 in Garlaige Citadel (you have to get passed the first banishing gate, so you will need at least four people to open the gate). After getting past the banishing gate, make a left at the cavern opening and you will arrive at yet another clearing where 3 explosures typically spawn. Be careful as a droma (magic-type mob, aggro to magic) sometimes spawns here, so make sure you pull explosures into the tunnel and keep casters back to avoid aggroing the Droma. Just past this opening is a tunnel and yet another opening with more explosures. This is the easiest drop to get as the bomb coal dropped every time we killed an explosure...sometimes multiple drops of it occurred with each kill.

- For the exorays, the best place we found in the Crawler's Nest was the tunnel leading to the clearing where the "secret room" is. This is the ring-shaped clearing (for those of you who have the CN map). Again, if you have a map, the little clearing in the middle of the ring is where 2 exorays spawn. Another spawns in the tunnel leading to the clearing, and several exorays spawn at random around the ring. If you have a high lvl player with you, camp the tunnel leading to the central clearing. If not, camp the tunnel leading to the ring clearing itself. Killing exorays is part of the leveling process, so you will probably get one before the others. In terms of frequency of drop, my experience has been that this is not as rare as the ancient papyrus, but it doesn't drop every single time like the bomb coals.

Good luck, everyone! This is really a test of how serious you are with this game as it can be a trying experience waiting for some of these items to drop. Have fun!

Excellent post, but I have a few comments to add about the bomb coal.

Quote:

This threw me off a little, but I figured it out. The cavern opening mentioned is actually past a rectangular set of hallways full of bats, weapons, and some skeleton-type mobs. If you just go left and head straight through, you'll get to the cavern mentioned.

Also, you will need sneak and invis up until the first banishing gate, then only sneak until you get to the rooms with the explosures themselves. If you want to pass the explosures safely (e.g. to get to a different camping spot) you will need both sneak and invis, and be careful not to cast as bombs will aggro to magic.

Also, while the coal drops about once per kill, I've heard of it going up to five kills in a row without dropping. Of course, I've also heard of it dropping 2-3 each kill, so I guess it can go either way. In either case, it's a fairly consistant drop so this item should be the easiest to get as long as you have some people with good reaction time to stun the explosures out of exploding.

I haven finally done this quest. Thanks for the help I got from my LS members. 3 of us needed the items and 4 other LS members helped us. Total took 3 hours to get everything. 2 Hours for the acient paper, which indeed is the hardest to get. Bomb Coal so far was the easiest, drop rate was 100%. Mold was also pretty easy. I guess that's because we had 2 high level THFs, so that's like Treasure Hunter 4 :P. Anyway, try get help from your LS because that's what LS is for, a little community. Good luck to you all!

i am having problems finding directions from Jueno to necro campsite for liches. can anyone give me directions from jueno to nero. Party tried going batilla downs to a tunnel leading into eldi necro but we were stopped by dead ends and aggro linking mobs everywhere.

If you don't want to go through Beaucedine Galcier you can go to the entrance that is just south of the white crag/bone structure. If you take a left as you leave Upper Jeuno into Batallia Downs and head south, you'll see on the map the white structure that makes a sort of fence of the lower portion of the map. Just below that you'll see a tunnel in the side of a big hill, which is the entrance. To fight Lich's in this area, you'll need to open a gate to the main hub room thingy. It can get kind of tricky, especially if there are a bunch of people running around flipping switches. There are three liches that spawn in this room, I think, along with a dog in the tunnel where you can camp, and another higher level undead. If you want, you can just camp in the small hub room (it has four doors opened by switches, that's why I call it that), but you'll have to kill all the mobs first and then camp them as they spawn, including the undead that you don't want.

My party didn't have too much trouble. The first paper dropped on the first Lich, and the 2nd paper dropped about an hour later. Hope this helps.

The part of batallia that leads most easily to the part of eldeime where you can find the lichs is up on a ledge which cannot be reached from the rest of batallia. To get there, you must go to Sandoria and take ranguemont pass through to the glacier and from there enter batallia. You will then be up on the ledge - drop down ONLY ONCE and enter the first hill you encounter. This is the best spot for lichs.
