Summary

All fishermen dream of hooking the big one. Catch him and obtain the treasure in his belly.

Walkthrough

Note: You must be level 50 and have completed the quest Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 before you can get this quest.

After getting the quest from Ailbeche, go talk to Ailbeche's father, Exoroche. He is in weapons shop in South San d'Oria. Then go back to Ailbeche and talk to him again. He wants you to get a giant shell bug from Crawler's Nest.

The NM crawler Dreadbug can be found around (H-9) by talking to ???. After you kill Dreadbug you'll obtain 2-3 giant shell bugs. You should keep them all or at least 2 since you might lose the catch when you try to fish.

(Note: You can skip the above part if you have enough gil and if the item is available at the Auction House.)

After you get item, you must go back to Ailbeche and trade him the bait. If you don't and you don't have bait anymore after the fish fight, you have to get the bait again in order to get the quest going. So make sure you trade the bait with Ailbeche after you get it.

After that he'll tell you you can catch a big one in Castle Oztroja. Find the pond where there are Oozes roaming around at (H-9). You should clear the area because they will aggro when you're fighting. They are good for building up TP.

Fishing skill level doesn't matter. Any rod that is designed for big fishes should be okay. Equip the Giant Shell Bug, along with rod, and fish in the pond until you pull up Odontotyrannus. A full PT of level 55 should suffice.

After the fight, the fish will drop Odontotyrannus. Take the item and go back to Ailbeche and trade with him. He'll then tell you to go to Selbina to cut open its belly and obtain the treasure. In Selbina trade the item with Zaldon at the Fishing Guild. He'll give you key item A Knight's Boots. Now go back to North San d'Oria, enter Chateau d'Oraguille and go to Prince Trion's room. He'll then reward you with the Gallant Leggings.

Castle O NM
# Feb 21 2006 at 11:25 AM Rating: Decent
NM in Castle O has somewhere around 1800-2k HP

Did this as 50PLD/WAR with a 62RDM/NIN and 67DRG/THF

We all built TP to 300

Once I fished it up I Flashed it to get a little hate, ran back to the other two.....DRG TA+Penta Thrust onto the RDM, RDM Spirits Within, I Fast Blade, 2 or 3 swings later he was gone.

His Screwdriver did pop the RDM for around 400, so be ready for it.
the right direction?

I have already started this quest, as of right now what i need is the Location of the "Dreadbug". H-9 in the big room? or H-9 in the tunnels...I'm just tired of running around CN looking in the wrong places. Bait is 50k a piece, and only one for sale at AH on Shiva server. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

When you trade the Giant Shell Bug to Albeiche he tells you in so many words that If you have someone else fish it up, they better be a damn good ("Renowned" is the exact adjective) Fisherman - but if you fish it yourself it will be caught easily.

In case you didn't trade a bait to the kid before going into Castle O, like myself (who forgot to even talk to his dad), you do still have the ability to fish up the "big one". I bought the bait, fished him up, had my friends beat him while I kinda beat it with a stick, then tried to trade the R/E fish to the kid and wondered what I'd missed. Then I remembered I forgot to speak with his speak with his dad. Did that, traded the bait to the kid, then traded the fish to him and then the guy in Selbina, and then finally talked to Trion and got my leggings.
    Good fight

3 level 55s can take down Odontotyrannus. My party setup: PLD55/WAR27 (me), RNG55/NIN27 and WHM55/BLM27. PLD and RNG used 2 hours, but wouldn't have had to if we had some kind of refresh (I forgot to bring juice). Fight was over fairly quickly, for only having 3 people. Even after popping Invincible, the RNG was able to tear hate away with Barrage, Slug Shot and Eagle Eye Shot. Cover came in handy at that point. ;) The WHM still had 250 MP left after the fight. Odonto hits very hard, so pop Defender before fishing for him (not Sentinel, it wears off too quickly).

FYI since the fishing system update you actually have to fish for this thing with the directional buttons. By bait #6 and trip #3 this subtle thought had dawned on me... Anyway me as a 52PLD/26WHM (sneak & Invis) with a 63THF/NIN with a stack of bloody bolts, we walked all over this poor fish.

A couple of things to clear up:

    1. Make sure you trade one of your Giant Shell Bugs to Ailbeche before you go to Castle Oztroja. I would put this in all-caps, but I am morally opposed to doing so. I cannot stress this enough, and I think this is why people cannot fish up "the big one."

    2. The pond in question is in the basement level of Castle Oztroja, and it does have a couple of Oozes there, along with Yagudo Priors, Conquistadors, and Lutenists. If you use http://www.ffxi-atlas.com (if you don't, it's a great site) you take the following route:

Entrance >> Brass Door/Trap Door >> stairs at "A" >> Second Floor >> stairs at "F" >> tunnel at "I" >> Basement >> large square room at (H-8) and (H-9) near the entrance to the Altar Room

Please do not go to the pond on the third floor. Level 52 (Paladin) (You can have this.) (Death)

    3. It is very easy to fish up Odontotyrannus. My fishing skill is 0 (actually around 0.4) and I fished him up on the first try. I used a Clothespole and the Giant Shell Bug.

    4. If you are around Level 52, you will get aggro from the above mentioned Yagudo. They check to easy prey, but they will give you a lot of trouble and they will link. Priors are especially nasty with -ga/-ga II spells. All of them are tough to pull because they simply stand there and cast/throw ninja weapons at you. Make sure you invis yourself if you're worried about creating a dreaded Yagudo train. Clear out the room with the pond before you fish, both Yagudo and Oozes.

    5. Odontotyrannus hits hard. Period. Blink-tanking is your best bet unless you have a full party, at least one WHM, or high-level help. I had a 68 THF/BLM helping me, and it hit him right off the bat for about 200. I was able to hold hate for most of it the fight, and it was hitting me for about 70-90. The good thing is that he has a low HP total. I just kept casting Cure III on us and the THF Sneak Attacked Dancing Edge when he hit 300% TP. I couldn't get hate back after that, but he was dead after about 15 more seconds. (/laugh) After that just talk to the NPCs in the order described above and enjoy your Gallant Leggings!

Now to convince someone to help me get an Eldieme Coffer Key for the Gauntlets quest...

the hp bar zoomed down quickly and i fished it up really quick on first try.

my other friend doing it with me had 3 fishing skill
and he failed with the 2 he had and couldn't get its HP bar down at all.

we got 4 drops of Dreadbug as well.

I was attempting to do AF2 yesterday and encountered some very annoying issues.

I had already accepted the quest and gone to kill the Dreadbug, got 3 Baits and went back to Sandoria, spoke with the father and child and got the cut scene where the kid, decides not to go with the other children and gives em the location.

I proceeded to go to Castle Oztraja (or whatever it's called)with a high lvl LS member. Got to the pond and attemped to fish, failed 3 times......

Afterwards we decided to go back to crawlers and fight another dreadbug, got 2 baits this time around. Returned to the Castle and once again failed fishing it twice.

I got a message simillar to this "you feel you do not have the skill required to catch this fish"

I've always been under the impression that no fishing skill was needed in order to fish the NM. Have they changed to quest in recent updates?

thanks for all your posts ! some helped a little but not enough !!!!
im fishing inthe right spot ! i have had plenty of help with the mobs - but my problem is no matter how hard or fast im pressing 4 and 6 - the fish goes and im left with another giant shell bug missing from my inventory ! jeeez its annoying! spent 3 hrs plus onthis but the health bar doesnt go down at all when i do get hold of the fish, untill it manages to go.
like some others have said - " what am i doing wrong">? im hoping that i dont have tolevel my fishing skill - as already im bored to tears with it - just want that damm fish out of that water!>?
maybe someone could reply with an idiot proof step by step onhow to pop that fish!!!? still cant get over all that fast button pushing and yet the health bar of the fish stays full !!!!!!!

I went as White Mage, it hit me once for 105 and then hit me again for 50 dmg, that's when my Samurai friend Provoked it. No SC, he did two Weapon Skills, my RDM friend used Spirits Within, it went down easily. Except at one point the SAM was down to 50 HP because it did Screwdriver twice in a row :). But CureV saved the day.
    My PT was 71WHM, 71RDM, and 63SAM.

I helped a friend of mine with this quest recently, and we did it pretty easily. I was THF/NIN 61 and he was PLD/WAR 51.

    First NM: Dreadbug.
We killed the Exoray which was wandering near the ???, then my friend spawned the NM. He provoked it, then I used Sneak Attack + Dancing Edge to get the hate back and keep it for the rest of the fight. It went down pretty easily, there's nothing special about this monster, it's just a big Crawler, with the same annoying special attacks (Poison, Slow, and defense boost). It dropped 3 Giant Shell Bugs when it died.

    Second NM : Odontotyrannus
We went to Oztroja with a WHM friend, so the setup was : THF/NIN 61, PLD/WAR 51 and WHM/BLM 61. We killed the Yagudos in the room (and the slimes maybe, I don't remember..), then PLD started fishing while WHM was resting to get full MP. After 1 minute our PLD caught the pugil NM. Same strategy as before, he voked it and I used SA + Dancing Edge, and tanked for the rest of the fight. Be careful, this pugil has high evasion from the start (and even more when he uses Water Wall), you may want to use food accordingly. Even with accuracy gear (Life Belt & Sniper's Ring), I missed a few times at the beginning so I used a Squid Sushi+1 just to make sure this fish would get what he deserved ;-)
This fight was pretty easy as well, the fish couldn't hit me often enough to go through my shadows. I think it used Screwdriver only once, and it realized it was useless so it gave up. Smart fish :P

Nothing else to say about this, really, except that it was pretty fun ^_^

Yeah, so I didnt want to gather help to do this, nor did I have a high level melee job. I managed to solo the fish as BRD/WHM 73.
Heres what I did; I bought 3 Yag drinks,
before fishing up the NM I fought random monsters for 300TP, then casted Blink, Stoneskin, and Double Mambo on myself.
After its spawned, Spirits Within, then Soul Voice and Elegy, Requiem, Dia II. After that run around the pond in circles and kite it. Stop and cast blink, stoneskin, and Mambos as needed, and try to keep your HP high as it can do screwdriver on you. After about 7-8 mins it dropped with me only taking minor dmg. Sure it did take quite a while, but hey you get it done without help.

Its on the north downstairs, with all the Laby Lizards. It is not on the side with the rumble tunnel.

Also, the god forsaken pool is on your way to the rank 5 tunnel @ (h-9). Hope that helps someone else not run through what I did.

I went with an AF party alliance just to help get a key (3 were needed), and didnt realize that it was an extremely rare drop. Reminded me of Paper Drop for G1. Well, we played for 2 hours, and I told everyone that I had no fight left in me, and was gonna head to bed when the puller brought in another one to kill. Well, that dropped and everyone lotted that needed it. I was told to lot since I would need it further down the road but I had to make room in my inventory first. A buddy of mine got the high lot, and everyone was congratulating him when I finnaly was able to lot myself. I won by 3 points o.O

Feel guilty, but at least I dont have to get it later.
    Dont worry everyone

This is way to easy. Can you believe we took this thing down in under 3and a half min. with this party: <52PLD/26WAR> <me>
    <60NIN/30WAR>
Thats it lmao We cleared the oozes, they coned Decent to me if i remember right and easy prey to him, same goes with the yagudo in the area. I wasn't familiar with the new fishing update thing so i had to try to figure it out cause he didn't know either lol. After we pulled the fish out and it criticaled me for 101DMG. I was terrified cuz i knew my NIN friend would delvl and same with me.He quickly voked it off me after he had cast Utsusemi:NI. we started to fight it and while we were fighting, i had to look for a Skillchain during the fight. >< You know what they say, when all else fails hit Distortion. =P I can't remember the moves that triggered this chain but we did it and it took 260DMG (how could i forget that lucky break). I had to heal the NIN as we fought. We beat him and I was soo shocked we beat this thing as we did. THANK YOU BLADEX!! =P Then blah blah blah i got my boots im happy ^^

Ok, here is how mine went. First after the cutscene where Ailbeche is told by his friends to get a Giant Shell Bug, you have to go to the Weapons shop in South sandy and talk to his father again. then back and talk to Ailbeche again. this time you will get more dialog and you can trade him the bug afterward.
After Trading the Bug he asks you to catch the big one and tells you where it is. at this point you can trade your 'Odontotyrannus' and he will tell you to take it to the guy in selbina, Head to selbina to the fishermans guild and trade the 'Odontotyrannus' to the galka in the back (Zaldon), and he will cut it open and you will recieve the Knights boots. Then back to sandy and talk to prince Trion. Then you will get your Gallant Leggings :)

NOTE you do not have to be PLD to do this fight, with the Odontotyrannus. I went as 61WHM/BLM. You only have to be PLD for the Cutscenes with the boy and his father. and we did not even have a PLD in our party as you can see below.

My party was major overkill lol. 74WAR/NIN 72THF/NIN 50WAR/NIN and me 61WHM/BLM. it was down so fast we were like wow lol.

As for the fishing of the 'Odontotyrannus' I have 51 fishing skill so it was no problem fishing it up with the new system.

So good luck guys, it can be done. :) and thanks to my LS friends on Unicorn, that helped with this.
