Summary

All fishermen dream of hooking the big one. Catch him and obtain the treasure in his belly.

Walkthrough

Note: You must be level 50 and have completed the quest Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 before you can get this quest.

After getting the quest from Ailbeche, go talk to Ailbeche's father, Exoroche. He is in weapons shop in South San d'Oria. Then go back to Ailbeche and talk to him again. He wants you to get a giant shell bug from Crawler's Nest.

The NM crawler Dreadbug can be found around (H-9) by talking to ???. After you kill Dreadbug you'll obtain 2-3 giant shell bugs. You should keep them all or at least 2 since you might lose the catch when you try to fish.

(Note: You can skip the above part if you have enough gil and if the item is available at the Auction House.)

After you get item, you must go back to Ailbeche and trade him the bait. If you don't and you don't have bait anymore after the fish fight, you have to get the bait again in order to get the quest going. So make sure you trade the bait with Ailbeche after you get it.

After that he'll tell you you can catch a big one in Castle Oztroja. Find the pond where there are Oozes roaming around at (H-9). You should clear the area because they will aggro when you're fighting. They are good for building up TP.

Fishing skill level doesn't matter. Any rod that is designed for big fishes should be okay. Equip the Giant Shell Bug, along with rod, and fish in the pond until you pull up Odontotyrannus. A full PT of level 55 should suffice.

After the fight, the fish will drop Odontotyrannus. Take the item and go back to Ailbeche and trade with him. He'll then tell you to go to Selbina to cut open its belly and obtain the treasure. In Selbina trade the item with Zaldon at the Fishing Guild. He'll give you key item A Knight's Boots. Now go back to North San d'Oria, enter Chateau d'Oraguille and go to Prince Trion's room. He'll then reward you with the Gallant Leggings.

to save alot of time, you can simply buy the bait from the Auction House. It costs 18,000 Gil on Shiva for 1 bait i brought 2 just in case i had a fishing accident.

You have to go as a Paladin u cant change jobs to spawn the NM.

I went with myself I was 51 PLD at the time. and a level 69 Warrior. If you have high level help, be smart and sub White Mage, so you can Sneak your way past all the Yagudo towards the bottom that read Easy Pray. and concentrate on healing your party members.

I fished it up in 1 go with level 1 Fishing Skill. no fishing skill is required only a Fishing Rod that is able to catch big fish

This is a lie, all quested af can be done as any job, IE your first AFquest your Hand quest and your final AF quest can all be done as anyjob. i just completed this as RDM75 tonight

I'll have you know that DRG AF3 requires that you be DRG. And I do believe the NM for NIN AF2 will not pop on the boat if you are not on board as NIN. You cannot spawn the 2 NMs without a wyvern. All Coffers must also be opened while using the job you're recieving the AF for

this stupid *** game...it said for me "you have a good feeling about this one" and i didnt even put a dent in its health bar...nothing....and i do know how to use the new fishing system...and since im broke cause i don't have time to make any money in this damn game much less play it i could only afford 1 bait at the time so i wasted 6-7 hrs helping someone so they would help me then helping other people then getting there and losing my catch. Let me be the first to say that I'm the absolute worst fisher ever, I don't even know how to fish since they changed it. But here is my horror story and I hope someone can help me out with this.

I went to the correct pond with a good rod for big fish and the shell bug. Everyone told me to press 4 if the rod went left and 6 if the rod went right, rapidly too. So I did this and my guy didn't have a "good feeling" about this one at all, infact I couldn't even touch its life bar and after 30 seconds of my Elvaan Male sweating perfusely the fish broke my line and took off with my 30,000 gil bait....

So, someone in my LS, (God bless them for helping a loser like me)actually bought me another 30k bait and came all the way to the pond to help me. So I'm thinking "Round 2 *****, I'm gonna enjoy killing you for the embarrassment and hassle you've put me and my LS through"

"snap" the ******* took off again....

So here I am 60,000 freaking gil later still without my PLD AF boots and needless to say I'm mega pissed...can someone help me or tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or is it that I just have the most misfortune in all of Vana'diel with this damn quest!

Please help!

AF2 Problem.. /cry
# May 09 2005 at 7:26 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, I'm posting as Ed's gf Maryjane on the server Garuda.

So here's my problem.... went to do my AF2 (yay).. talked to Ailbeche, talked to his padre, talked and traded Ailbeche and he told me to catch him "a big one" at Castle O, but when I looked in my inventory the Giant Shell Bug was still there. I then proceeded to Castle O with some high lvl buddies and got to the pond. After a whole darn hour of fishing I caught nothing, not even a bite. H-9 Pond where the Parasites spawn (AF Hat for Rng, and coffer spawn spot). So here's where my question lands... what the hell was going on? Was I at possibly at the wrong pond? OR... did Ailbeche have to take my Giant Shell Bug from me? I'm not sure what to do... PLEASE tell me someone else had this very annoying problem.

Just letting you know there are 2 ponds at Castle Oztroja. The pond that has Yagudo Parasites would be the wrong pond. You want the pond that has Oozes on it. At lvl 70, the mobs around the right pond shouldn't gauge EP. I hope that helps you~ ^^

This is incredibly easy, even with the new fishing system. I did this with 0 fishing skill, and no fishing clothes.

With no fishing skill the fish (not the mob) was conned "You have a good feeling about this one". Once you've wrestled the fish's life to 0, press enter and out pops Odontotyrannus.

I was planning to change to my RNG main, but a 75 BLM friend offered to help so i stuck as PLD. The mob died in about 10 seconds with the BLM nuking it, and even after getting hit with screwdriver the taru still had half HP.

how to fish it
# Mar 22 2005 at 4:07 PM Rating: Excellent
OK... An update and not just a story
FISHING skill /cloths do not matter

it may take a while to get a bite but when you do

you have to kill the fish (new fishing system) and when its life is zero and the name (Fish) is grayed out. hit Enter/ X.

And pop.. a fishy

if you dont feel comfortable fishing i would suggest buying the bamboo rod and some little worms in south sandy and practice in the Moat.. if you can catch those. you can catch this fish

dont just hit enter a bunch or you will lose your bait, you have to kill the fish before hiting enter or your line will break

Yeah, this completely sucks now. I had to get my AF over again (long story) and im on my way there now. I really hope I can get this on the first try like I did the first time I did this.

Kinda a cheep shot SE. You force this new fishing system on us PLD's... but you remove Banish III from the Maat fight. >.<

Ok Question, I activated the quest for the Gallant Leggings, I bought a Giant Shell Bug off the AH, and tried trading it to the boy, he wouldn't take it, tried about 15 more times...still nothing. So I ended up just going to Castle Oztoja, Caught Odontotyrannus and now have him in my inventory. Here's the problem The little boy will NOT! take Odontotyrannus from me, i have tried trading it over 50 times now, what's wrong?

Just thought I'd add my misadventure.Me and another Paladin in my Linkshell needed our Boots,so we got the help of a 74 Ranger and a 75 Warrior. This thing would obviously have been screwed.Note I said OBVIOUSLY.So we get a Mea,go through Oztroja, agged only about twice, reach the pond.Everything's fine,so I fish.About after my fifth attempt I caught it,and I notice it has HP to deplete to fish it up,which I didnt know at the time ><.I press Enter and it's hp lowers, then spam X a little, lose my catch.

...

So I'm pissed,Ranger says to only press Enter, other Pld up.He presses Enter, loses his catch.Ranger leaves to go fight avatars,we go back, get two new Giant Shells,go back without agro, blah blah.Get there again,I fish, after second try,I catch something, and the text scrolls by,"You may not have enough skill for this one."

Lo and behold,I lose my catch.Now I'm incredibly pissed,other Pld tries.He gets pretty far,wrestles it abit,loses his catch too.So 0/4 between us both,so angry.

So yeah, now to a question.Does fishing skill matter now or something?
lol, we raped this fish...

60DRK (me), 60DRG, 65SAM, 60PLD, 50PLD.

We built up TP from the mobs around us, then I was designated as the fisherman, since I had the highest skill, a whopping level 15 + gear.

Using a composite rod, I fished him up on the 2nd attempt (and fought him with my fishing clothes on)

we all did our weapons skills at once, and it was dead, Guillotine for 800+, Tachi:Gekko for 400+, Penta Thrust for 600+, and the PLDs got a WS in as well.

Look at the map here: http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/Fr_Castle_Oztroja.html
(this is going from memory, so hopefully it's accurate)

The pond is on Map7, to get there, start on Map1, and head to J-8, then (I'm fuzzy on this part) head to G-7 on Map2, which will hopefully take you to I-8 on Map6, head to I-7, then you'll be at G-5 on Map7, then take the west path to the H-8/9 open area to find the pond.

The mobs around the pond were kind enough to drop a chest key, giving us all 3800 gil on the way out, a nice touch :)
Fish Fight
# Feb 18 2005 at 2:02 PM Rating: Decent
Fish fight was a piece of cake for me - was just me 51pld at the time and friend of mine lv 70 pld. Just be sure to kill all surrounding MOBS before fish fight or else you might get aggro.
??? Location
# Jan 16 2005 at 6:11 AM Rating: Decent
Just to clarify where the ??? is:

-From the first drop off area in Crawler's Nest, take the second tunnel counting from the right.
-Keep straight in the tunnel through many intersections and bends and eventually you'll end up at another drop-off area. The labyrinth lizards here aggro and link so sneak/invis up (need sneak for later).
-From the second dropoff, take the second tunnel counting from the left.
-Follow the ramp bends up and you'll come to an intersection with an Exoray and 2-3 Witch Hazels. Those saplings don't aggro but the Exoray will so you'll have to kill it.
-Now from where you entered the intersection, there should be a little alcove to the left. There will be a ??? on the wall and Dreadbug pops in the hole above it. If you have sneak on and pop it, he won't aggro you.

where is it?
# Nov 25 2004 at 5:45 AM Rating: Excellent
People who post never say exactly where it is.

When going, go where the magicite door is. THe pond is right there...

If you want to see it on a map, simple go to the non-mee deggi the punisher NM and hang a right. It takes you to the same map, not to the magicite door, for reference... If you fall through the trap door at the first level, then you will fall into the bottom floor where you can see the pond.

NM is easy. RDM soloed it and fished it (you don't have to have the paladin to fish it) I helped with elegies, buffs, and enfeebles. Other RDM watched and hasted the tarutaru RDM of ours. The mob hits hard and the RDM blink tanked for it. Elegy, IMO helped, but is not necessary.

Oozes don't aggro unless you rest.

Last night i went and did this quest... was easy.
Our party set up was :
Pld(me) 50
Pld 50
Pld 55
Smn 51 (sub whm)
Drk 55
Thf 61
So we had to kill it 3 times for all 3 pld's and it was easy each time. The drk and thf's sc would take about half his life away so the smn would almost never have to heal. The only problem was the last time we killed it one of the pld's died because the thf was afk for half the battle.. so make sure your main damage is there before you start the battle :P
Worth the price

Just did this quest the other night, I started the quest and flew to jueno. Bought the "Giant Shell Bug" at the AH on sylph server for 11k. If you got the gil and dont like a lot of down time i suggest doing this if the "Giant Shell Bug" is available.
I then warped back to sandy to trade the "Giant Shell Bug" to Ailbeche to keep the quest going. Once I finished that I flew back to Jueno and asked a lvl 70 Paladin if he would help me go get the Fish in Castle Oztroja. He said yes and brought a lvl 68 blm friend of his along. I sub'd whm and sneaked and invisabled myself threw the Castle to the pond. I have no fishing skill and used a mithran fishing rod and fished up the fish. The paly tanked it and practically killed it on his own. Blm then D2'd me back to Sandy and went back to talk to ailbeche. Took a choco to Selbina and got my Boots. Took me about 20 minutes to finish quest, Not bad for 11k+ gil for choco and airship.=0)[linkhttp://ffxi.allakhazam.com/profile.xml?68688]
