Summary

All fishermen dream of hooking the big one. Catch him and obtain the treasure in his belly.

Walkthrough

Note: You must be level 50 and have completed the quest Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 before you can get this quest.

After getting the quest from Ailbeche, go talk to Ailbeche's father, Exoroche. He is in weapons shop in South San d'Oria. Then go back to Ailbeche and talk to him again. He wants you to get a giant shell bug from Crawler's Nest.

The NM crawler Dreadbug can be found around (H-9) by talking to ???. After you kill Dreadbug you'll obtain 2-3 giant shell bugs. You should keep them all or at least 2 since you might lose the catch when you try to fish.

(Note: You can skip the above part if you have enough gil and if the item is available at the Auction House.)

After you get item, you must go back to Ailbeche and trade him the bait. If you don't and you don't have bait anymore after the fish fight, you have to get the bait again in order to get the quest going. So make sure you trade the bait with Ailbeche after you get it.

After that he'll tell you you can catch a big one in Castle Oztroja. Find the pond where there are Oozes roaming around at (H-9). You should clear the area because they will aggro when you're fighting. They are good for building up TP.

Fishing skill level doesn't matter. Any rod that is designed for big fishes should be okay. Equip the Giant Shell Bug, along with rod, and fish in the pond until you pull up Odontotyrannus. A full PT of level 55 should suffice.

After the fight, the fish will drop Odontotyrannus. Take the item and go back to Ailbeche and trade with him. He'll then tell you to go to Selbina to cut open its belly and obtain the treasure. In Selbina trade the item with Zaldon at the Fishing Guild. He'll give you key item A Knight's Boots. Now go back to North San d'Oria, enter Chateau d'Oraguille and go to Prince Trion's room. He'll then reward you with the Gallant Leggings.

Why do people persist in saying how fast that took down mobs without saying which mob in this mission it was - that could be pretty misleading to newer players doing their first AF .

Odontotyrannus's Pond is in the BASEMENT... I spent waytofu ckinglong in Castle O finding that piece of shi t... its @ h-8/h-9 it has Oozes in it, its on the way to Rank 5mission area... and idk how to fish before this so just fyi to fish you have to press 4 or 6 on your keypad to get the "fish"'s hp down to nothing then press enter, if you do not do this you will lose it and thereby lose the money you could have sold the extra bait for like I did. and no you don't have to be pld, I solo'd both nm's as a 75thf. the crawler you can spawn every vana day so stock up. make sure you trade the bait to the kid before you fish the 2nd nm or it won't work. yes you do have to do the cs's with the kid and father as a pld. like the post says fishing skill has nothing to do with it I have 0 (obvioulsy). Hope this helps someone

Went with a Halcyon Rod as 75 BST/WHM with a CourierCarrie out. Pulled him up with 16 Fishing skill on second cast, hit me twice on spawn for 86 damage apiece, siced CourierCarrie on him, who beat him down in about 20 seconds by hitting him for 280-330 damage a shot.

Quick and easy.
Job question.
# Apr 28 2007 at 6:43 AM Rating: Decent
Do you need to be PLD in order to fish the NM up? I have the quest logged...trying to solo this on another job but the ******* wont spawn for me.

Pld53/War26 and Sam57/War28 (me) cleared the room, healed up, he poped it I was waiting for the mob buffed up with 300 tp. Voked used Jinpu , 2 hr'ed Jinpu, Enpi, Enpi, Meditate and Jinpu. Mob had roughly 1/8 hp left, I had about 200, Paladin voked tried to heal me up so I could finish off the mob when he died then I followed shortly after.

A level 60 Samurai with full AF and T. Rice Balls could easily duo this with a 52+ Paladin.
Help ?

Location of the Pond

Thank you, BregorQuadavbuster for the following quote:

Quote:
2. The pond in question is in the basement level of Castle Oztroja, and it does have a couple of Oozes there, along with Yagudo Priors, Conquistadors, and Lutenists. If you use http://www.ffxi-atlas.com (if you...ing route:

Entrance >> Brass Door/Trap Door >> stairs at "A" >> Second Floor >> stairs at "F" >> tunnel at "I" >> Basement >> large square room at (H-8) and (H-9) near the entrance to the Altar Room

Please do not go to the pond on the third floor. Level 52 (Paladin) (You can have this.) (Death)

This was the easiest way for me to find the pond. Atlas doesn't have a dot on it, unfortunately, and the maps jump around a bit, but it is conclusive if you follow Bregor's >>'s.

To clear up any confusion. There are Yagudo in that room, as stated preset. Lutanists, Priors, and a few others of that caliber. When I went, the room had been cleared out. There are no Parasites (leech type mobs). There are only oozes. Ooze type mobs named 'Ooze'. (I had read a different post that stated the opposite and it drove me nuts trying to figure out which was which.) If you found parasites, you're on the third floor. Which is wrong. You need to go back down the stairs, through that password door which I'm sure was a capital B! to get through, and go ALL THE WAY AROUND that room to G-7 (displayed as F in Atlas- that'll get you back where Bregor was talkinga bout).

I personally had to cast about seven times- had a one-hook pole. No breaks, no losses of bait (I had only two on me, which made me very nervous). Another group showed up right when we fought it. I had myself as a lvl 50 WHM, and my good friend Chronokid, a 75DRK. He Guillatined without any buffs for about 1100, and took about half the mobs life away, so I can confirm it has around 2100hp. The thing had horrible accuracy, but Chrono was /NIN and using shadows, and I wasn't focusing enough on that to pay attention.

I think it helps if you're fishing closer to the center. The other group that came after us was having a tough time getting the fish to spawn, but when the PLD moved more inward, it took two more tries and she got it. We allianced up and killed it easy with a another 60WHM, a 52PLD, and a 70MNK. Overkill. The MNK tanked it and took a tiny bit of damage but nothing serious and nothing a PLD couldn't main cure over.

Good luck to everyone else hunting this thing. Stay positive, keep at it. Help the next squire who needs his boots.

/salute
Help please

I went to Dreadbug and killed it, and got Giant Bug Shell, went to Castle Oztroja and kill Odontotyrannus, and got the Odontotyrannus Key item, and i had forgotten to trade Ailbeche the bait, but now i go back and buy one from AH and try to trade it to him, but he won't accept it, does anyone know how i can get this quest to work still?

Thank you,
Chris

Defeated Odontotyrannus with a 61 RDM (me) and a 55 PLD.

I really wasn't sure we could do it without Utsusemi. Now, I'm a big believer that Utsusemi is overrated, but everyone's been saying "this thing hits hard, you need to blink tank it." Still, I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm a solo nut. :3

I suck at blink tanking. My ninja is level 13. I have Utsusemi, but I have hardly any practice using it. I doubt I'd be any good at keeping shadows up, and I hate using underleveled subjobs. For that matter, I hate subbing NIN. (RDM61/NIN13? I'd feel like Birdhair!) The point is, I am not going to sub NIN.

So I went as RDM/BLU. Great solo sub for those of us who hate /NIN. I was prepared for a difficult fight with plenty of close calls, trying frantically to keep myself alive while waiting for the recast on Stoneskin, one of those times when every second feels like forever. I was worried I'd have to resort to kiting it around or something.

With expectations like that, you can see why I was surprised at how easy it was.

Not exactly a cakewalk, but nowhere near what I was expecting. We had a close call when the PLD ate two Screwdrivers in a row, but other than that I felt like we had the fight under control. I enjoyed the fact that it had low HP; made me feel like my damage wasn't futile. XD

Anyway, the point of this post is to say to blood tanks: Don't be discouraged! You don't need shadows to tank this thing. I always read the comments to get an idea of how strong a particular mob is, and (not directed at anyone in particular!) I felt these comments were saying "get a blink tank." That almost discouraged me, but I fought it and won, and I'm hoping this'll keep others from worrying over nothing like I did. :)

Good luck!
Some people are idiots.

Fished easy after about 10 casts and no bites.

Totally owned it as 75 WAR/NIN, friend 62 RDM hasted me and Dia2'd the mob. Rampage did almost 1/2 its life away. i'd guess it has about 2500-3500 HPs.

The aggro threshold is about 62, my friend told me the Yags were EP and too weak but when he dropped invis in front of a few EPs they didnt aggro. if you go at 62 bring invis just in case, 63 i'm thinking you should be safe.

Almost at sandy after visiting selbina. gonna get my Boots! /hurray
75 WAR/NIN can solo easy.

well, when I tried to fish it up, it actually took awhile, just to get him on the hook, but he was on it. an easy reel in. my fishing is 1, and stories I've heard off hear made me nervous. but I only used 1 shellbug. NM was easy, pt of RDM BLM BLM PLD all lvl 54 took it out. watch out though, he hits plenty hard.
Easy

First of all I want to say this is the 100% correct info, because I see a lot of confused people here, and some very vague details...I cannot STRESS ENOUGH how important it is to go trade one of your giant shell bugs to Ailbeche before you go to fish the big one. He doesnt actually keep it, and it is VERY easy to do this with one shell bug. I did this with ZERO fishing skill...When you hook the fish it will say you dont have enough skill to reel it in, but i still reeled it in first try...If you are not hooking the fish after 25+ tries you did something wrong...I had a high level with 50+ fishing skill try to fish it to find out if anyone could hook it, or you have to be flagged...The 75 with 50+ skill was unable to fish it up with the shell bug...Appears you need to have it flagged by trading one bug to Ailbeche, and he tells you to go try to fish it in castle O...Hope this helps anyone who is confused on the fishing part. Btw we soloed the NM crawler in CN with no difficulties witha 75 NIN and myself (50 pld)...took about 5 minutes. Also, I do not beleive this crawler will spawn unless you are flagged for the quest. As for fighting Odontotyrannus, it was almost impossible to tell how hard he is because with a 75 drg and a 75 nin they killed it in about 3 seconds...
