Summary

The cause of the star trees' poor growth seems to lie in the Toraimarai Canal. First, bring some silk cloth to Professor Koru-Moru so he can improve his magic doll. Then take the magic doll into the Toraimarai Canal to carry out an inspection.

Walkthrough

After getting a cutscene from Chumimi in the basement of Heaven's Tower, you must trade a Silk Cloth to Koru-Moru in Windurst Walls. Then, return to Chumimi for another cutscene, and she will give you a Sluice Surveyor Mk. I.

Next, go to Toraimarai Canal.

Once in Toraimarai Canal, head to H-6 and investigate a ???. Then head to the ??? at I-9. Investigate that ??? once, and then use Manafont and investigate it again while Manafont is active. You should receive a cutscene telling you to head northeast.

Head northeast to the circular room at J-8, and investigate the ??? there to pop the notorious monster Magic Sludge. Kill the monster to receive your final cutscene before heading back to Windurst. The Magic Sludge must be killed once for every black mage in the party or alliance that is doing the quest.

Return to Heaven's Tower and talk to Chumimi to receive your Wizard's Petasos.

Location question
# Jul 20 2004 at 11:09 AM Rating: Default
I have a question regarding the location of the ??? and the NM. Thanks in advance! t(^^t)
Quote:
Go into Toraimarai Canal (and make sure you have Sneak). You must investigate a ??? at H-7. Then head to I-9 and activate Manafont. While Manafont is active, examine the ??? at I-9. The doll will tell you it senses a powerful magic force nearby.

Is the ??? at location I-9 on the first map or the second map?

Quote:
At that point, go to the room at J-8. If you examine it, an NM elemental called Magic Sludge will show up. Being a Dark Elemental NM, it'll bombard your party with spells like Bio III. When it's dead, all BLM's in party with this quest can go back to Chumimi to finish the quest.

Is the NM at J-8 referring to first map or the second map?

Hi, can you guys help me out? I started the Quest and went the Canal and exam the first 2 ???(activated manafont for the second one). I didn't have an alliance going in with that time, and I didn't fight the NM. I am just wondering, the next time I go in, do I have to exam the 2 ??? again, or can I just go fight the NM with my alliance? Thanks in advance for the help.

;D ;D ;D

If you already did the first two ???s, then you just need to go to the last one and fight the NM. No need to waste another Manafront.

EVERY BLM IN PT HAS TO TALK TO THE ??? TO BRING OUT THE ELEMENTAL. EXCUSE MY CAPS BUT THS IS FREAKING IMPORTANT THAT ANYONE ATTEMPTING THIS QUEST READ THIS.

to do this... have 1 blm talk to it. bring out the elemental, and have it go away. then the next blm talks to the ??? and bring out elemental again and so forth for all blm..

OR,, just fight the darkness each time for every BLM in the PT...

I wonder if I can just go do all 3 ???
and Zone out that area without fighting the NM and the next time I went there I don't have to click the last ??? and wait 5 min for every blm in the PT?

I just did the quest with 9 BLMs...
And we tested it out. You Definitely have to wait and spawn the NM once per BLM. that means 9 BLM = 9 NMs!.
You can choose to fight the NM 9 times or you can spawn it and let it dissapear, you just have to fight the NM on the final (9th) time.
Be prepared to wait as each time you spawn the NM you'll have to wait about 5 minutes per spawn.
so 9 BLM = 45 min wait... before you even start fighting the magic sludge... arg..
Also i recommend that you wait to fight the NM on last try because if you fight the NM early party members will tend to leave and ***** the final blms waiting to get their hats... it always happens...

This is definatley correct.

I'd like to note that there is a bit of a delay until the next Black Mage can get the cutscene that activates the Magic Sludge. So don't freak out if you're clicking on the ??? and getting a message in your chat window.

Can't wait to wear my hat!

How to get 3 mages door key item

Ok, with the help of a higher level BLM I could finally find out why Kupipi would not give me the key item to open the three mages door alone.

In order to get the item you must give a rollanberry to Kupipi AND do/have done "Written in the Stars" mission Since that mission is skippable most don't do it in order to get rank 3 as fast as possible as I did. Now I'll have to finish 5-1 prior to get the key item it seem. Aw well.

Anywya I hope it help you guys get the key item too.

as with all other AF3 quests, title given for this quest is

Paragon of Black Mage Excellence

and yea, non-windurstians cant do the rolanberry thing...way to ***** us bastokan blms over...

anyway while you're in toraimarai make sure you have sneak on at all times...once the links start they dont stop...and i mean it >.<;;

for the manafont ??? make sure to talk to it first before you activate manafont. when you get there, talk to the ??? and it'll say something about not being able to absorb all the energy (cut-scene). then examine it again and theres no cutscene. then you use manafont and hit the ??? again, then a cut-scene will occur, and it'll say that manafont started to absorb all the stagnation or whatever. when the toy tells you what direction he senses a very strong magic stagnation signal from, thats when you know you're clear to go kill the NM. similar to PLD AF1, the NM is an elemental that has very high magic resist (lv 70 blm did 1/2 dmg just about all the time, rest of us 60+ were doing 1/2 to 1/4 dmg with the occasional full dmg >_<), but a 60ish pld can tank fine, and it really cant kill you since it doesnt have any ancient magic or strong magic. just a ton of bio III spam...good luck!

"Root Of the Problem"
Amendment
# Jan 29 2004 at 2:48 PM Rating: Good
Quick clarification/amendment to my own post.

The girl you talk to first about the Rolanberry inside the Star Tree is "Tayaya" in the chamber room. Then you trade the Rolanberry to Kupipi. HOWEVER, you can only do this if you are a native of Windurst it seems. As a rank 5 San'dOrian, (with 49 unique quests completed in Windurst) I cannot get Tayaya to tell me the secret to the door (the key item).

The "door" in question is the Locked Gate (guarded by the Cardian) in Northern Windurst walls below the House of the Summoner. That gate is normally a one-way exit from Toraimirai Canal, but if you do as directed above (buy the Rolanberry at the Jeuno Duty-free shop in Port Jeuno... its WAY cheaper than the AH) you will get a key item that lets you enter the Canal alone (as though you passed through the Airship gates, you get a cinematic "walking" sequence of you entering).

In order to get through the locked gate in Windurst Walls to get into Toraimarai Canal, you need the key item Rhinostery Certificate that you get by opening the quest Toraimarai Turmoil. To open this quest, in turn, you must first finish the quests:
  • Food for Thought
  • Overnight Delivery
  • Water Way to Go
  • Blue Ribbon Blues

    No..

The key item she gives you is the key for the Three Mages Door, it alows you to open it by yourself.

I went to the door in walls with the key item and nothing happened.

The key item caption is something like this "Opens the

Are you sposed to give her two rollanberries?

I gave Kupipi the Rolanberry and she got all excited and told me that if I stop by Heavan's Tower again she might give me a present. I assume the present is the key item for the door but she will not give it to me. Can anyone explain why?

Wow.. This entire info-set was either ripped, or donated from another site. (Bad translation and all). Either way, let me clear a few things up that I had to puzzle through on my own.

In the paragraph that starts "Until this process", disregard most of this. The entrance to the Toraimarai Canal that is spoken of, is past the 3-mage door (Whm, Rdm, Blm required to open). Most people from windurst will be familiar with this. If you trade a rolanberry to the girl, you get a pass that allows you to open the door without any mages. You already have to be beyond mission 8 (from your respective nation) to be able to do this.

Stuff here is nasty. Sneak is REQUIRED unless you feel seriously lucky. You can get a map of the Toraimarai Canal from Rycharde (mhaura) by doing his quests up through the 4th one (with the pizza key-item for his father in Selbina).

The last part the guide talks about is slightly misleading. You CAN back off from the elemental to avoid it immediately attacking, but you MUST kill it in order to complete the quest. Basically it's saying that if several BLM's are on this at once, and someone activates the thing before everyone is ready, you can back off and wait until the whole group is prepared.

I recommend a full party of 55+ people (well balanced, planned skillchains worked out in advance). A single high-level person in the mid to upper 60's helps immensely. Chaos Elementals HATE hexastrike, so a high level White Mage is a huge asset to this quest.

    I hope this helps.

The "Magic Pool" effect is simply manafont.
