well, on my way back to Norg to get the damned scroll after everything above... Had to check the door about 5 times to get silver shavings (threw me at first), and then had to keep re-sneaking. OMG whomever thought that the highly variable duration of Sneak, invis and deodorize was a good idea needs to be beaten by every person who's gotten an ulcer trying to sneak somewhere knowing everything near them's gonna aggro as soon as that third warning is done.
All that aside, I did it relatively easy once I spent several days farming necklaces (Sorry all you poor suckers trying to do the same - a 58RDM is nasty to try to keep up with when she's pissed and looking to send feathers flying!). I got lazy, bought the scroll aeons ago, and now look forward to getting some of that back. Funny, I swear I paid half again what I expect to clear... Word of advice to wannabe Ninja's - don't even bother with the job until you have your riceball price (or whatever else you expect to raise your fame) at 155 or thereabouts... (+/- 3-5 I think)
Farmed as RDM50-58/THF16, completed quest as RDM58/THF16 (sub meaningless for the completion)

In-Game TextDescriptionLaisrean asks you to fetch an item for him in Sea Serpent Grotto. Make sure you have your Silver beastcoin, then enter the Sea Serpent Grotto from Yhutanga Jungle. Take every left you come to. Eventually you will get to an Ornamented Door. That means you're going the right way. Take a left when you get to the door. Continue down this path and take the next left you find. You will arrive at a room with a large puddle and a waterfall. Continue moving straight until you find an unmarked door. Examine this door until you get the message, "You see some silver shavings near the indent on this wall." Trade your silver beastcoin to open the door. You will be greeted by some pugils when you open the door. Move forward without falling off of any ledges. When you arrive in the room at (H-8), hop off the ledge. Move through this path. You will get to a room identical to the one you just fell from. Keep going forward and you will arrive at the unmarked door to the treasure room. Examine the ??? to recieve the Sea Serpent Statue. Ok, well for this I ended up doing 20 Zinch Ore, 150 Yagudo Necklaces and 4/6 Ninja Scroll Quests. I wasn't able to access this quest until I completed the 4th Ninja Scroll Quest (I did the Rusty Subligar last because they were 10,000 gil a pop so I waited for them to go down in price) I'm lvl 54 DRK so I thought I should be ok with not getting aggro. Well I get down to the Ornamented Door and I go down about 300 HP because I have a trail of Sahagin lol. So I use my Flee ability and end up with about 20 Sahagin chasing me! I zone into Norg and change my sub to my 22 WHM and continue on my way. I get down to the "Blank" Door (it's like the cracked walls) and I trade the silver beastcoin... Nothing. So I talk to the door and still nothing. I figure I didn't come all this way so I talked again... The text varied a bit so I kept talking to it and eventually it said there was a small indentation. I traded the silver beastcoin after I talked to the door one last time and it meantioned something about silver shavings and it opened. After some rather large drops I come back to Norg with my Sea Serpent Statue and claim my Utsusemi: Ichi scroll at last. /Cheer

First off let me tell you this is the longest quest i have ever done in ffxi. I been farming necklaces for ages. Until I realized that without treasure hunter your in for the long haul. So I got my Thf to 15 went to Giddeus as war/thf and what a suprise the drop rate was incredible. Took me 30-45 min to get 57 necklaces compared to being blm/rdm were i would pull a train of 6 and only get like 1 or even zero necklaces. Finally i checked the riceballs at Neptunes Spire In Lower Jeuno and they where 153. So I went to Norg and what a surprise I got the quest.[pre][/pre]

I just wanna suggest something... Bring some form of WARP >.< Unless you like running of course. I was running a wee cricle before i finally found the right way lol. Other than that, very good guide got there easily^^

Thankyou, perfect guide, got there with no problem at all.. I was confused to what the Sea Bonze aggroes to in the treasure room though.. I went as whm58 but this should be easily done stright from whm25 if you are good with sneak and invis..

well as a 48 srk 17 thf i average a drop every 3 kills so i can farm these very fast. the problem for me is that then i have to run back to windy trade them all and then run back to farm some more is there anyway better i was thinking aobut buying the warp club but not sure if its worth it what do u guys think.
yea bought the utsusemi: ichi scroll cause i was rich >.> and lvled up my nin to 20. I discoverd that nin was very expensive, so i decided to do the norg quest to get the scroll so i can sell (Currently 710k on siren)it. I start farming as a DRK46/WAR23 and well, the drop rates suck, i train the mobs often and then spinning scythed them. In about 7-10 trains ill get about 15 necklaces. Im hopeing im gona get quest soon cause i wanna get my gil >.< GL to everywone who's gona try this quest it's not very fun..

how do i get fame in norg fast , im a level 16 ninja and still dont have this spell, i had to solo to that level cause no partys want me with out it =( and it cost 700k-900k in ah + im poor
I know that the rice balls are a popular "gauge" for knowing your fame, but don't make that your only way of telling you can do the quest.
I got the quest last night at the price of 161g. What?!? Everyone saids it has to be 152ish. Well, more than just Norg fame affects the prices of the Rice Balls.
I have decent fame in all the cities, including Jueno, did about 6 yag necklace turn ins (24), 'bout 10 zinc turn ins (40), tenshodo invite quest and that's about it. Cost me about 30,000, but I also farmed and mined most of my supplies; took me 2 days.
My point diversify you fame, it helps.

240 yagudo necklaces and rice ball dropped to 152. Got all quests with ease.

I don't think doing rank 5 counts but becoming a member of the tenshodo as part of rank 5 does. I know because just today on my mule I checked rice balls...163.. So I grabbed a tenshodo invite for the heck of it and became a member.. rice balls dropped to 161 immediately. So its a pretty big boost to fame.

do i really need the tenshodo invite cause gain fame in norg from tradeing zinc to the guy in the warehouse, cause if you do im fu*king pissed
Well if you are getting fame in Norg then you should be able to do the quest to join for free. You talk to the Mithra at the desk of the Neptune's Spire and move the arrow down below the two options to an empty space. Then they will tell you to go to Bastok to apply and then you can become a member and get a tenshudo invite to sell or give to a friend.^^
I lucked out a little with this quest. I went to Norg, thinking I had enough fame... But I was apparently wrong. I could however do three other Norg quests, so I went ahead and did them... And ta da, I had enough fame before I left.
I guess I lucked out a second time, as a Summoner was passing through the same area... Saved me a beastcoin [Yeah, big whoop, I know].
Anyway, it was the second time I've completed said quest, and... I have to say to those that do it, don't panic. It's a fair distance to get where you need to, but it's not -that- dangerous. It took me three silent oils, just to give an idea. Groups of enemies are pretty separated from each other, so recasting/applying sneak's pretty easy.

Alright I'm having some problems. I traded 105 Zinc ores to the guy in bastok. And i still cant do the quest.
Have you turned in your Tenshindo (spelling?) Invite? Cant gain fame like that without doing that first I dont think

well if this helps any1 first i traded 56 zinc ores at the quest in bastok for fame and while stopping in jueno rice balls were 156 so i went to norg...and got cold shouldered. i went back to bastok and traded 24 more zinc ores...rice balls now at 155 and i was able to begin the quest

Thanks to this guide and a good map of the grotto I completed this quest in no time =D As a RDM49/BLM24 this was a piece of cake ^^ I am a master of {Stealth} ^^ A WHM 25 could do this no sweat.

Hey, does anyone think I can solo the quest at PLD47/WAR23? I made the walk to Norg pretty easily, but I don't know if the mobs will get harder as I go deeper in the dungeon. (They probably will, but it doesn't hurt to ask)

I've gone to this door about 54326362 times over the years and it's said mythril beastcoin everytime.. not silver... and anyone I've talked to that needed to get past the door, it has also said mythril.. never silver.
Clearly you have been checking the wrong room for the last 54326362 trips. The directions are not hard to follow. Once you reach Ornamental Door take a left. Once in the large room follow the left wall and go down the path into another large room. This is the room with the Silver door. Do not go right. If you go right you run into the Mythril door.

Went to norg and did the rusty leggings quest and the tonko:ichi quest. I was gonna do the rusty subligar quest but rusty subligars are going for 20k each!! so 200k for this quest is a big no no.
Still not enough fame so i ghetto'd back to jeuno. Riceball now at 156. Gonna have to hand in a few more necklaces by the looks of things :-)

I got this quest after about 68 zinc ores and maybe 20 necklaces? I don't know how. I didn't get the quest at first. I had checked riceballs at 161 before heading to Norg to try anyway. I had hero fame in Jeuno and Sandy, headed to Norg, got Tonko:Ichi quest and did it, then did Kuriyami quest and decided to try the NPC again and got it. Checked back in Jeuno at 160 for rice balls.
On further reflection, I'm thinking maybe doing the ZMs helped a lot with Norg fame.. If you haven't done them, get to it! :)

First sorry about 2 post keyboard is all messed up Second i wanted to do nogr fame so i could get scrolls and sell them i started out buy doing necklaces i traded 140 of them had riceballs selling for 160 so i went to bastok to give zinc traded 32 of them. Went back to check the price of riceballs they were now at 158 so i went off to norg to check cuzz some people said riceballs have to be under 153 and some have said under 160 so i took my chance and went off to norg helped a 31 whm get there he was doing sam. quest when i got there it gave me my quest and the price of riceballs for me were 158 so i hope that helps anyone thanks

I'm confused. I went to the silver door and it said I see mythril shavings not silver. should I head to the mythril door and see if it says silver or what?
I'm getting the same thing. I did the quest before on my other name too but I never had any problems like this. I'm going to try a mythril coin.
I started out just farming yag necklaces hadnt went to see anything about rice balls i had heard of them but didnt know anything about the price or even where to find them lol... took about 3 trips to giddeus with about 15 necklaces per trip... went to jeuno when i was there asked LS about the rice balls and the told me about the inn at ah in Lower Jeuno so i went there talked to her checked rice ball price--- 163 at the time went to ah bought the tenshodo invite (10k) traded it to her and then put it right back up for sale lol... neways went to bastok started trying to farm zinc.... this takes entirely to long =/ so i took my 8 that i had for like 30 mins worth with TH1... 50SAM/25THF... traded them to the guy in port bastok.. went to bastok ah there was 38 for sale so i bought as many as i could at one time went and traded them until the ah was out... ok 38k worth of zinc later i say hmm that should be enough right... so i warp to norg get there and REJECTED >.< ouch.. ok but i still got the tonko quest finished it along with doko and kyuri still no utus quest... so i go to windy get about 30 necklaces... warp to norg and BAM rejected again so i go to bastok and do the zinc quest 4 more times and warp back and FINALLY get the #$%@#$@ utsu quest.... the quest took about 7 mins after i got it went thru SSG as a 50SAM/25WHM for sneak all in all besides the quest being a BYOTCH to start its easy after that...
