Summary

A certain post is rotated at the meadhouse. Now, it's your turn.

Walkthrough

Once you have completed the quest Painful Memory, proceed to Lower Jeuno and enter the Merry Minstrel Meadhouse. Talk to Bki Tbujhja and she will mention that you need to bring her a vial of Holy Water. Do so, and she says you need to pay your respects to the bard of yesteryear. She tells you to pour the flask of holy water onto a sarcophagus in the Eldieme Necropolis.

To access the necessary entrance to Eldieme Necropolis, head to Beaucedine Glacier and go through the tunnel at H-11, where you zone into Battalia Downs. Once there, enter the Eldieme Necropolis at F-5.

Make your way to the dead-end room at D-4, where you will find the sarcophagus. This room has four Blood Soul mobs that scan as 'tough' to a level 50 bard. Clear the hallway and the room, then rest and recover hp and mp. Your party/alliance should camp at the top of the stairs that leads to the dead-end room.

Trade your holy water to a sarcophagus. This will spawn three skeleton notorious monsters, Owl Guardian, Dog Guardian, and Yum Kimil. You need to destroy these NMs quickly, as you are under a time limit. If you can manage to kill one of the NMs without drawing agro from the others, it is possible that the other two will despawn.

If the NMs despawn before you can kill them, or if you are defeated, nothing will happen when you re-examine your sarcophagus. Wait a few minutes and touch it again, and the NMs will respawn.

Once the NMs have been defeated, re-investigate the same sarcophagus you poured the Holy Water onto to initiate a cutscene. After receiving the Star Ring key item, return to Lower Jeuno and speak again with Bki Tbujhja to receive your Choral Slippers.

Just did this fight as BST75/WHM37.

Put up Blink+Stoneskin and had my DD gear on. Popped NMs with Sneak on. As expected they all aggrod anyway. Zoned to glacier as I had planned. Was taking about 40/hit with 289 defense. I took a total of about 500HP in damage after buffs before I managed to zone.

Came back and cast Sneak. Dog Guardian aggrod through sneak so I put CourrierCarrie on it. Was expecting depop soon based on the 1:15 timer someone listed. That timer might be accurate, but only if it starts after they lose aggro on everyone. It took me about 1:00 game time to zone and the others depopped after about 1:30-2:00 game time more.

CC had 72% of her HPs left with almost no help from me. Had to Heel her to wait for other skellies to depop. Checked sarc again and got my cut scene and key item.

Solo'd this today as RDM.

Sneak pop does, indeed, not work. I even used a silent oil to see if it made a difference. Nope.

My plan was to zone the three skellies, then come back and claim the main one, Yum Kimil.
Once I popped them, I immediately silenced Yum Kimil and ran to zone (so he wouldn't be far behind from trying to spellcast)

When I came back in, Yum was ahead of the two other skellies, which was a problem, so I trained them back to zone, gravity'd Yum and zoned again.
The other two skellies were now ahead of Yum, so I silenced Yum and began beating on him.
After I defeated him, I ran to the coffins (didn't find the other two skellies on the way), examined the one I traded the holy water to, and got CS!

Sneak pop don't work in this, because when you trade your holy water your sneak will immediately wear, so unless you can sneak right after it (not sure if possible before aggro) you can't avoid the aggro. If you pop it the 2nd time (which people are saying you don't need to trade holy water) then its possible to sneak pop i guess.

i just done it again , this time solo ( for AF+1) on my whm/nin, sneaked pop and found it i can't sneak pop..... so i ran to zone, recast utsusemi and stoneskin then zone back in, and claim on of the nm and wait for the others to go back to the spawn place, kill it down to 10% hp and wait for other nms to despawn. Easy. the skeleton misses me a lot. i took owl guardian who don't seem to cast.

Sneak Pull: X
# Jun 22 2006 at 9:23 PM Rating: Good
Sneak pull did not work for me. As soon as I pulled, Yum Kimil started casting on me, and the Guardians linked.

I went as 75RDM/37WHM (to cure status effects) and had to chain-teleport. I got the main mob down to about 65% before deciding not to push my luck ^^; Maybe I could have fought all three with sub NIN, as Blind seemed to make the Guardians miss almost 100%.

I'll prolly find a THF or /THF to aggro and Flee to zone with 2 of the mobs. Either that or I'll spawn as BRD, die, and let someone else pull just one, raise me, and kill it ftw!

i solo'd these today as BST75/whm.

sneak pull did not work, i had to fight all 3 of them. i put my CC on all 3 of them and it was not looking good so i had to melee on one of them to help out.
At my second jug the first was almost dead (the one i was meleeing) a rampage finished it off.. then on the second which was at about 10% and the last one which was very easy.

CC hits for about 220-280 and gets hit for about 50.

This was by far the hardest first AF fight i have solo'd (about as hard as the NIN's last AF fight).
at least the zone is close so you have a good chance to run away if things start going bad.
Sneak?

Just got these beautiful slippers after being killed twice in a row against the NM's, as a brd 55. The whole "w/ sneak no hate thing" doesn't work as one may think. The NM's will still aggro you so my only tip is; Spawn them, run like crazy up the stairs to your friends and have them voke the aggroeing ones. I only brought a 74 PLD to help me and I might suggest getting a few more because the first time I got killed immediately and they started beating my friend up so badly he almost died (he zoned). The second time we tried, I got killed again in like 5 sec, luckely only 1 aggroed the PLD and after about 2 min he came back and raised me. I ran to the grave and got my CS at last! So make sure you have a buffer and some good ppls with you on this one ;)
#REDACTED, Posted: May 22 2006 at 4:57 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Just finished this a few minutes ago as RDM75/BLM. I traded the holy water without sneak, aggroed and had to zone. I zone out and back in and Dog Guardian is there all alone so I go kill it and go back to check if the other NMs are back at spawn and they already despawned... I check the Scargophagus and get CS.

Just did this today as 70blm/whm with a 63whm, 57blm, and 53drk. We cleared out the hallway, and the room, healed MP, buffed up, and we all had sneak on. The whm (who needed the AF) went up and popped the NMs and IMMEDIATELY got hit with sleep II and poison II. she dropped quick. the drk voked and went next, then the 57blm, and finally me. Either we did something horribly wrong, or these NMs were changed to not be able to be popped w/ sneak up. They ripped us up good.

Ok, for those who dont know, such as I, you cannot kill the one you pull to fast. The other two must despawn while you fight or else it wont work. Make sure, if you kill very fast like me, that you dont pull till one vanadiel hour has gone by.

uhhh i dunno what im doing wrong. I'm going as 75 rdm/blm. I spawn the NM's, then they pop. I I pull 1 nm so i don't aggro the other 1's. Then i 2hr Chainspell to kill it really fast cause it says i have to kill fast to get the quest done. WEll i kill it b4 my Chainspell even wears (it prolly dies in like 20 sec), after i let the 2 other NM's despawn. I touch the same coffin thing i did b4 and i get "Nothing Happened..."

Someone wanna help me out??? maybe i'm killing the NM too fast?

easy battle. Carby pulled and WHM tanked Yum Kimil and killed him, others despawned.

Congrats to Pigwah for his new slippers.
Thanx also to the RDM Onaga for helping.

solod as pld/nin at 75, war sub probably would have worked fine as well, it wasnt hitting hard and isnt a mage type as far as I can tell. As above, pop mobs, use cure to pull owl and head back to the top of stairs.

Ended with 90% hp casting almost no spells, I flashed a few times to recast shadows, I had a lot -evasion so they werent lasting long ^^;; The original post seemed to imply that you needed to kill before they depopped naturally or something... when I went back to sarc the other 2 were gone (it took me a good few mins to kill it) and I checked to get my cutscene and item.

just soloed this as a 75 BLM/WHM, at this lv nothing in the room (or omw to the room) can aggro me at 75. I made my way to the coffins, casted sneak and traded holy water to 2nd coffin on the left, 3 NMs spawn. I run out of room and time how long they stayed before they despawn. I clocked it a 1:15 game time.

[all time below is game time.]

- At 12:00 i cast sneak pop the mobs and run back to hallway.

- At 12:15 i cast buffs:
Protect II / Shell II / Blink / Stoneskin / Aquaveil / Ice Spikes. and rest to full (sneak before rest)

- At 1:00 I cast cure on the Owl Guardian, as he runs to me i cast Blind.

- I then procede to Nuke with Thunder IV, Fire IV, Water IV and Aereo IV, at which point i run out of MP, no problem, I hit 2 HR cast Thunder IV at which point stoneskin wears off but thanks to paralze from ice spikes and Aquaviel my thunder IV was not interupted, I quickly recast stoneskin and let lose of another Fire IV which finish off the Skele. I then recas sneak (safety 1st :p) then check the same coffin and get my key item.

Just remember that all NMs will despawn after 1:15 game time, so I recommend you pull the Owl Guardian 1 hour (game time) after you pop the NMs. Very easy on my BLM had 801/909 hp at the end of fight

Just finished this for a friend.

72 RNG/NIN (ME)
67 RNG/NIN (BRD)
67 PLD/WAR

Now we did have 3 high level people, but rng are weak against bone mobs. We still kicked ***. First time we killed one and others despawned and nothing happaned when she checks the spots. So we wait and she checks again and all of them pop out.

PLD had to 2 hour and we all zoned.

Came back, popped them again, fought one, others despawned, and she got CS.

Just did it solo as 75NIN/WAR. I used a sneak oil to pop them all, pulled one with jubaku and killed it. After the others despawned i got my key item.
Really easy

Did this a day ago. Just me(58 brd) and a 73 nin. This does'nt take an alliance or even a party. I just sneaked myself, traded the water, pulled one with cure, and the only time we ever got hurt was when it used blood weapon. But yeah, really easy, anyone level 65+ with utsusemi could handle one with ease ^^
Have to be a bard?
# Jun 15 2005 at 12:29 AM Rating: Decent
Do you have to be a bard to get the key item? Can you just start the quest and then switch to a higher job for the fight (let's say Monk?) and still get the key item?
RE: Have to be a bard?
# Nov 18 2005 at 6:22 PM Rating: Decent
As with any AF once you activate quest, you can switch to another job to finish it, i for one will be doing this Quest with my White mage once it is activated!
Confirmation
# May 27 2005 at 6:55 AM Rating: Good
I would like to confirm what Xino said since I just did this last night for a couple bards on my LS.
If you can complete the battle by killing just 1 of the mobs (we did just the owl guardian) and have the others despawn. In addition if 2 bards are in the party, you only have to do the battle once.
Which Scargophagus?

Any you say? No, at least not for me. I _HAD_ to trade it to the first one on the left, all the others did nothing.

I just did this, it was me and another Bard and i can confirm that if you have multiple bards you only have to fight once.

also you CAN kill just one and still finish it (through the despawn) make sure you carby pull and make sure that you DONT kill the mob till the other two (the guardians) are despawned
Easy as HELL
# Mar 24 2005 at 7:12 PM Rating: Decent
Ok... find someone who knows the way because i didnt >.> but uh.... I did it with a 62 THF and 75 WHM .... had spawned it with sneak cast on me. backed away and let the whm/smn pull with carby.... killed it.... other nm's despawned..... checked the thing i traded to and got the cutscene and key item...... you definitely don't need an alliance or anything as long as you have a couple high lvls =o
Not too bad

Completed this with my linkshell and a few others last night. For those that do not feel like reading much, here are a few key points:

- Once you activate the quest with your BRD, you can complete the fight as any other job.
- If multiple people need the item, you only need to defeat the 3 mobs once and have them all click on the Sarcophagus.
- These mobs can be put to sleep with horde lullaby
- It’s best to fight them in the hallway in front of the sarcophagus room. Otherwise the mobs move on top of the sarcophaguses and this forces the melee to move around more than they should have to. Also, there seemed to be a few hit detection problems.

Here was the party setup:

69 PLD
71 BRD
66 WHM me =) Did it for my 51 BRD
53 BLM
48 BLM
67 MNK

61 DRK
51 PLD
52 BRD
68 BLM - I think (was on anon most of the time)
58 WHM

Now granted this wasn’t the optimal party setup, but on our way there, we thought the number of people we gathered was “overkill” for an AF2.

So we made out way to Eldieme, and found the sarcophagus room. There were 4 ghost-type mobs that had to be cleared out of the room first. Easy prey to me (66 WHM) and they went down easily. Our plan was for the 69 PLD to provoke one of the mobs after it spawned, everyone to engage the same one and the 71 BRD would horde lullaby the other two. We rested MP to full and had the 52 BRD trade her Holy Water and spawn the 3 skeletons (we later learned that this was a mistake, and you should have the highest defense person with the quest activated trade the water). It was impossible for the BRD’s song to sleep the mobs quick enough, and one of the mobs obliterated our 52 BRD. From that point forward, the fight wasn’t too bad (other than me pulling hate once because of too much curing and ending with approximately 100 HP before the mob could be slept again). After the fight, we rested to full (approx. 5 minutes) and prepared for another round. When the 71 BRD traded his water he received the ‘Star Ring’, so I traded mine and received the key item as well. This was a bit anticlimactic, but I’ll take it. Woohoo I now have the boots I’ll never wear!

Anyway, after this, we helped once of our members (48 BLM) get his ancient papyrus. While doing this, we noticed that another party of only 4 members had tried to defeat the 3 mobs. After giving Raise IIs to all four, we formed a 3 party alliance pulled the fight to the hallway and helped them complete it. This, of course, was very easy since the other party consisted of all level 60+.

In conclusion, I would say that the fight isn’t too bad but shouldn’t be taken lightly. However, the reward is kind of poor for the effort required.
