Summary

Once you've found a Tavnazia bell in the Eldieme Necropolis, journey to Fei'Yin and commence the battle against the undead.

Walkthrough

Note:You must have completed Messenger from Beyond - WHM AF1 and Prelude of White & Black - WHM AF2 in order to activate this quest.

In Chateau d'Oraguille, head to Prince Regent's chamber at H-8 and examine the door. A cutscene will begin, and you will be asked to obtain a Tavnazia Bell.

To get a bell, head to Eldieme Necropolis and kill Dark Stalkers, which come in the form of Dark Stalker black mages, Dark Stalker rangers, Dark Stalker thieves and Dark Stalker warriors.

When you have a bell, head to Fei'Yin, which is accessed from the northeast corner of Beaucedine Glacier. You will get another cutscene when you enter Fei'Yin. Head to J-10 on the top floor and trade the Tavnazia Bell to the ??? to spawn the notorious monster Altedour I Tavnazia. Kill the NM shadow to receive a Tavnazian Mask.

Return to Northern San d'Oria and head upstairs in the cathedral. Trade the Tavnazian Mask to Narcheral to receive your Healer's Briault.

Duoed Twice

Myself and Legacyl (Gilgamesh Server) duoed this as 75 rdm/nin. The 2 WHMs that needed this were there for back up heal and waking us up during Sleepga. Not too hard the 1st time, 2nd time was a breeze. Just be sure to get healed during the -ga spells cuz they burn thru shadows and stoneskin pretty well. Props to Legacyl cuz he did most of the blink tanking.
If we ever wanted to duo this again, I'd reccomend a rdm/nin tank and a rdm/drk or some other stunner because a lot of his -ga spells could have easily been avoided w/ a well timed stun.

# Jan 13 2005 at 10:53 AM Rating: Decent
Getting the bell was easy, helped a lvl 54 Whm friend of mine today, we went in a pt of 4 ppl

Lvl 68 Rdm/Blm
Lvl 63 War/Mnk (Me)
Lvl 61 Nin/War
Lvl 54 Whm/Blm

Darkstalkers were pussies, the 4 of us even took on a lonk or 2, no one was in any real danger, got the bell after the 6th kill
Lots of fun

Got my bell within 20 minutes with just me and my friend killing the mobs for it. Did the fight with 4 people, 75 PLD, 60 PLD, 57 WHM (me), and 53 RDM. It was fun!

Completed this last night. The Tavnazian Bell is definitely the most annoying part of this quest, not the hardest part. The Dark Shadows die easily, even with a single party of 55+. I had a full alliance sitting on top of the human bones, so it was kinda overkill. It took 2 hours for one bell to drop...so yeah this part sucked.

The NM fight was fun, but man is he nasty! We had:

60 BLM
62 MNK
58 WHM
58 WHM
57 NIN
60? BLM
63 RDM
60 PLD
62 DRG
62 SMN
59 DRG
61 DRK
60 PLD
64 PLD
61? DRK
64 WHM
63 THF
61? BLM

The 64 PLD tanked it and we had the 63 THF SATA onto the 64 PLD right at the beginning of the fight. The thing is like a normal shadow...on crack. The thing likes to use sleepga(II) to really **** you off and spams dimensional death like you wouldn't believe. The hardest thing to do is keep the hate on your tank. If you can manage that you should be able to win fairly easily. We had two deaths for each of two fights against this NM. The MNK died in both fights and each of the DRK's died once too (Frickin Guillotine).

Be very careful when taking this NM, especially if you want no deaths. I have read very few posts where at least 1 person didn't die fighting this guy.

A lot of people have have asked me questions about this, i'll clear up as much as I can about this quest.

Probably the hardest thing about this quest is getting the Tavnazia Bell. http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=2948

The best way to get it is to get a high level thf (I was lucky enough to get a 75 thf to help me) We wnet to the hume bones camp which you can get to by dropping down the hole in the middle of the first floor in Eldieme Necropolis from the Battallia Downs entrance and thats where we killed shades. It took 6 hours to get me the bell @_@

The next day, I started looking for people. The best way to get people for this quest is to look for white mages that are levels 55-60 and ask them if they have their bell and need to do the battle.

I invited one of my friends 75RDM/NIN, found another 57WHM/BLM, and a tank 72PLD/WAR (galkan).

The other whm asked one of her friendds to help 55MNK/WAR, then my RDM friend had one of her friends help us too 60WHM/BLM (he already had the quest done) and the PLD had one his his friends come too 55WHM/BLM.

so we had
56WHM/SMN (me)
55WHM/BLM
57WHM/BLM
60WHM/BLM
75RDM/NIN (back up tank with phalanx and utsusemi)
55MNK/WAR
72PLD/WAR

The most important thing about this battle is to have a tank with very high HP, so either a PLD or MNK is recommended. Why high hp? Because Alty likes to use Dimensional Death, a move that cuts straight through defense regardless of what it is. You WILL be neededing to cure a LOT. Get as many white mages as you can.

kill all of the shadows in the room before you fight. they will aggro and make the fight a lot more difficult.

Always make sure all the mages have stoneskin and blink on before Alty spawns, especially the mage that is making him spawn.

Alty usually likes to open the battle with a nice AOE like Sleepga or Firaga III. so, once you make Alty spawn, DONT immediately run to the mages. go to an open area or next to the melees so they can pull hate off you before you go to the mages.

Its best to have 3 of the mages cure and have 1 of them debuff and buff then heal mp and then do it again. near the end of the battle the other whms will have low mp, so then it will be up to the whm that healed for a while to cure at the end.

DO NOT EVER cast any white magic attack spells on him. banish and holy will only do a few points of damage and it will get hate on you. save the mp for curing, you'll need it.

High HP is key for the tank (hence the 72 galkan pld, but its possible to do it with a lower level pld) since he will be taking a LOT of damage. Defense is important too since a lot of his defense will just be cut through. Demensional Death can do well over 250+ damage to your tank per hit, so defense and HP is very important. HP is as well since mages might not be able to cure fast enough.

If the tank dies, you die, then you have to get another bell (fun, fun).

Make sure you heal to full and wait for the shadows to spawn again after each battle. After the shadows spawn kill them. If they dont spawn after battle, then they will during the next battle and complicate things. Its best to wait.

...for all of you unlucky people like me that found only one alliance for this in weeks...make sure you go to sandy after you get the bell...if you don't, you will wind up like me - w/o af3 when you finally find people to do this quest.. ; ;
found that its easyer then taken granted for....
# Dec 03 2004 at 12:36 PM Rating: Decent
I've done this now, and difrently then had planed.
It is alot easyer then you think.
I did this quest over 2 weeks ago or just about 11-23-2004, with a LV 70 NIN 60 WHM and 60 DRK
this wasnt as hard as it seemed, killed the mobs, and this quest i rank is 4.9/5 due to the fact that the demons are stronger then anticipated for me to solo 1 at a time =D ( take a lil longer then wanted )
the gang of mobs took out his blink pretty fast, ( happens to be something like 4 mobs, i took one, he took the other 3, as we schoold them, the DRK was helping me pick off the one i had, so we can kill the other mobs.
and i coulda swore one of them hit me for 100 + DMG with no REAL armor on, but couldnt find in my list. and i had Cure V hate would be a lil easyer to control =D because u know, Cure V is a whm's best buddy, lil enimity pull at all. its just plain awsome =D

Ninja gets you through most the fight, and i just kept Regen II on him, and a basic " Divine seal Cure IV" because that pretty much heal'd him from the whole fight, and it was easy. DRK and the ninja SC'd which riped over 800 DMG off the mob, and i WS'd for 100 /laugh
over all, this was a super fun mission, like to do it again soon =D
can this happen....
# Nov 21 2004 at 2:27 PM Rating: Decent
can being a lv 58 whm, with a few LV 60 buddies, and a lv 64 ninja do this... basicly...
- whm 58
- nin 64
- whm 60
- whm 60
- rdm 58
and some DD lv 60-75 would work yes? please tell me if this can work =D
[ e d i t ] i could also get a LV 74 PLD to join, so would this beable to work PLD WHM NIN WHM WHM RDM?

Just for fun we did this last night with 6 people.

70 RDM/BLM (hume)
69 PLD/WAR (mithra)
69 RNG/NIN (elvaan)
66 NIN/WAR (elvaan)
66 BLM/WHM (tarutaru)
64 WHM/BLM (mithra)

Nobody died in fact we ended with mostly full HP and a decent amount of MP. I was main tank until the NM Aspir-ed all my MP (at about 20 seconds into the fight) at which point the NIN and I just parallelled each other with hate to keep it from going after the RNG and BLM.

I've done this fight 6 or so times and the main problems are the following:

- PLD eats too much dimensional death, has all MP aspired, dies because WHM is used to PLD curing themself. This can easily happen within 30-40 seconds.

- Melee damage dealers pulling hate. Nothing kills an alliance faster than a RNG/MNK/WAR/etc deciding to build TP and then spam damage from the get go. non PLDs and NINs die fast to this guy.

Basically, he's tough but only if you choose to make him tough. Yeah you can throw an alliance of high lvls at him and win, maybe without a death, maybe with a death or two. My point is that you don't need to do that.

Why did we do it with 6 people? I'm crazy and wanted to prove a point. ^^ Also it's a pain in the rear to get an alliance full of thoughtful people who will listen.

DD hit thf for about 450.
Finished fight at 120/600mp and thf at 1/2 health.

Bell dropped. 4th Dark Stalker. Ninja 71 was with us for 1st 3 though.

Last night on Hades, I finally got an alliance together to do the NM fight with me. Here's the total setup (I know it may've been excessive, but I did this once before and lost so it's better to be prepared the second time):

RDM59/BLM29
RNG58/WAR29
WHM58/BLM29 (me)
WHM60/SMN30
DRK60/WAR30
WAR54/NIN27
DRK60/WAR30
PLD61/WAR30
MNK61/WAR30
RDM59/NIN28
WHM59/BLM25
MNK61/WAR30
SAM64/NIN25
WHM57/BLM28
BLM49/WHM24
RDM61/BLM30

We had to do this fight a total of 5 times (once for each of the WHMs, and once for another WHM who came to this as RDM instead). We started off by camping at the entrance to Fei'Yin, in case we have to exit quickly in emergency. The 5 people with bells would /random to decide who goes first, second, etc., then that person and one of the WAR subs would go to (J-10). After we're all buffed and ready at the entrance, that person would trade to the ??? and pull the NM to where everyone else was. The mages were kept a good distance away from the battle to avoid Sleepga.

Overall the battles weren't all that bad, except for a couple deaths in the later attempts, which we bounced back from with Raise II's after the fight (DD started hitting us HARD). All the WHMs really needed to do was spam cure the PLD and a couple of the MNKs, and an occasional Curaga, and the battle was won. We pulled off all 5 battles within an hour or so, and that's my story of AF3. ^^

I did it with me (57whm), and 5x lvl 70-75s, easily.

Btw this mob is a shadow, not a bone-type. So dagger penalties etc don't apply.

They must've been really crappy then, or you musta had mostly all dagger-users (Daggers suck against deads). You just need some Mnks to help, 'cause H2H is kick *** against deads, no matter what kind

I setup an alliance recently to give this bad boy a try, and of course we failed the first time around. The dimensional death spams were too much to handle.

Anyways, i got a new bell, and i'm preparing to go back to this NM for my AF3.

I was wandering if there was any Paladins on the KUJATA server who would be nice enuff to accompany me and my alliance on this battle. I am lookin for a level 60 or higher PLD.

We have 4 WHMs, 1 BLM, 2 BRDs, 2 DRKs, 2 MNKs, 1 RDM, 1 SAM/WAR, and 1 RNG. Levels ranging from 55-75.

I would like to do this asap, but without a good PLD it's gonna be hard. If you would like to help me and my alliance please contact me either on here, or at my LS's website on our forums, or just /tell me on KUJATA. My WHM's name is Rend of course ^ ^

Thanks for your time.

the battle is not as hard as its made up to be. i killed him a few days ago with only 7 people and only 2 of them were above level 70!
here was the set up,

56WHM/SMN (me)
55WHM/BLM
57WHM/BLM
60WHM/BLM
75RDM/NIN (back up tank with phalanx and utsusemi)
55MNK/WAR
72PLD/WAR (galkan)

the fight was very easy. here is some tips:

kill all of the shadows in the room before you fight. they will aggro and make the fight a lot more difficult.

always make sure all the mages have stoneskin and blink on before Alty spawns, especially the mage that is making him spawn.

DO NOT EVER cast any white magic attack spells on him. banish and holy will only do a few points of damage and it will get hate on you. save the mp for curing, you'll need it.

high HP and defense are key for the tank (hence the 72 galkan pld, but its possible to do it with a lower level pld) since he will be taking a LOT of damage. demensional death can do well over 250+ damage to our tank per hit, so defense is very important. HP is as well since mages might not be able to cure fast enough. if the tank dies, you die, then you have to get another bell (fun, fun).

make sure you heal to full and wait for the shadows to spawn again after each battle. after the shadows spawn kill them. if they dont spawn after battle, then they will during the next battle. its best to wait.

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, but the NM is a Black Mage, and likes to cast -ga spells. A 73(?) Red Mage in my group tried to Silence him, but didn't have any luck. So if you've got Stoneskin, you should have it up even if you're not the one summoning the NM.
My group had 8 total. I don't remember the exact levels, but they ran mostly from 60-65, with a 70 and a 73 as well.

White Mage (me)
Red Mage
Warrior/Ninja
Ninja/Warrior
Thiefx2
Dragoon
Samurai

The Ninja was the primary tank, but the two thieves used SATA to bounce hate between the ninja and the warrior. Only myself and one of the thieves survived the fight, with the Red Mage tanking at the end, and dying at the same time that the NM did. The Samurai went down first. Both tanks died because I ran short of mp for heals toward the end of the fight. If we'd had another White Mage, we probably wouldn't have lost either one of them.

Did it again a little while later for a member of my LS. For this attempt, we had 11 people, mostly levels 60-67 (the other whm was only 57), and a level 75(?) White Mage who was willing to help out (he'd originally come to Raise III the Red Mage). The Red Mage, the Ninja, and myself, were the only members from my fight that were also involved in the second fight. Deaths were limited to a monk who died about halfway through (and is apparently 1/5 on surviving this fight ^_^;; - he got agro by accident, and went from full health to dead pretty much instantly) and the ninja, who blew himself up just before the end. The group managed to interrupt most of the spells that the NM cast this time around, so AE spell damage wasn't nearly as big of an issue. And with two extra White Mages to help, healing wasn't as big of a problem either.
Idea?

I can't WAIT to get this AF peice.
Looking back on everyone's information, I've come up with an idea!
Back when my LS and I did the Rank 5-1 mission, we had a MNK, WAR, THF, RDM, and me...the WHM (...yah...we did a blitzkrieg and just out right killed the Arch Lich, we won with only one death!) In anycase, since this bad-boy uses Dimentional Death (wee!), what if we were to bring a 63 PLD, and that old crew we used for 5-1? I know that MNK's are awesome against undead!

So...here's the battle plan, have the MNK hit hundred fists a little ways into the fight, our RDM and I will be spam curing to keep him up in the 1.1k HP range, and if things get out of hand, then we'll have our PLD give his two hour of Invis to pull the hate off our PLD!

So in idea...our MNK would hundred fists, our PLD would invis to regain hate, and from there, it would be all down-hill (I hope!)

Hoping that'll work there...if it does, I'll be one happier WHM. ^^

FYI ive had the situation before where invinci failed to pull hate back from MNK after a 100-fists. Usually it happens with the MNK opens with a 300% TP raging fists and then engages 100 fists and then TPs raging again. In these cases I was doing everything else that i normally due to hold hate in tough situations (opened with 300% spirits, voke, flash, defnder, sentinel a bit later, and some Cure 3s) so it wasnt like i was sliacking in that department either, its just that invinci while generating a lot of hate does not generate infinite hate. So dont expect that invici is the magic bullet for hate.

In my personal experience (i have not yet tried to take out this mob), the best timing (since our NM quest mob fighting team pretty much always includes MNK and PLD) is to fight the mob to partial HP until it uses its two-hour (if its an offensive or defensive melee type mob, IE WAR, MNK, THF, PLD, DRK even), then you engage the PLD invici to block 100-fist or mighty strike or whatever, and then after thats over (or after invinci or perfect dodge wears off of the mob, or the danger from cahinspell or manafont is over presumably even though PLD 2 hour wont do jack there) the mob should be at about 30-40% HP and the 100 fists pretty nicely usually lasts just long enough to kill the mob.

Also Phyrnia's point that the MNK advantage is against skeletons and not shades is a good one, MNK wont do any particular bonus damage as opposed to any normal mob they fight (defintely no bones bonus damage), though 100 fists is still a really strong skill even without the bones bonus.

The NM is technically an undead, however, he's a shade, not a skeleton. That I'm aware of, the undead butt kicking ability only applies to bone-type mobs, not shades.

NM fight
# Jul 12 2004 at 9:58 AM Rating: Decent
In regards to the actual fight with the NM, having done this fight three times this morning... the best solution seems to be to "do as much damage as possible without risking drawing hate from the tanker."

We had a full 18 people, 1/3 of them were WHM or RDM. Main tank was a 60PLD. Top damage-dealers were a 74RNG and a 61MNK, but don't let people fool you into thinking you "must have high levels" for this. An intelligent group of even 56-60 should probably be okay.

First fight, 61MNK had Boosted to ~800 ATK, and launched Howling Fist right off. BAD IDEA. Despite my best efforts (I was one of the WHMs, he was in my party) he was on the floor in moments.

Second fight went better... some scares as the RNG tanked it for half the fight, but thanks to lots of name-specific Cure-spamming, we managed to take it down. Again the poor MNK died (this time to an 830 damage Dimensional Death), but only towards the end, and because Altedour had Sleepga'ed (!) the alliance. Watch out for this!

Third fight, MNK even used Hundred Fists, but thanks to preparation, Invincible from our main tank, and a well-timed Cover as well, we killed him in record time, and no deaths.

In conclusion, bring one good tank (Lv60 is was great, I'm sure that even 57 or so would be fine), some quick-acting healers, and as much damage as you can throw at him, and you should be able to take Altedour just fine. Just be careful to keep hate on the tank as much as possible -- good hate management is crucial for this fight.

Another solution would be to go in with two PLDs, and use Sneak/Trick Attacks (THF, DRK/THF, or MNK/THF would be ideal for this) to keep hate on the tankers as much as possible.

Good luck!

I was hunting for this bell for six hours this morning. During this time we found two papyrus papers and zero bells and zero coffer keys. We shouted around but no one in eldieme needed a paper at that time. The party was levels 57-62 with only 5 members. Very easy and a good place to get WHM club skill up. So the day wasnt a complete waste.
