Note: You must have completed Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 and A Boy's Dream - PLD AF2 to begin this quest.

Start out by heading to Chateau d'Oraguille and go to Prince Trion's chambers.

After the cutscene, you need to head to M-7 in Southern San d'Oria and talk to Vemalpeau, who lives in a small house. Then, head to the Lion Spring's Tavern and talk to Najjar. Next, head to Count Caffaule's Manor at C-6 and talk to Ullassa. Ullassa will tell you about an item called Mique's Paintbrush.

Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and obtain a Zvahl Coffer Key. The following monsters drop coffer keys: Ahriman, Doom Demon, Arch Demon, Blood Demon and Abyssal Demon.

Next, find a coffer. All eight spawn points where coffers can appear are located on the third map. The spawn points are at J-10, F-10, F-6, J-6, G-8 and H-8. Trade your key to the coffer to receive the the Mique's Paintbrush.

Next, head back to Southern San d'Oria and talk to Vemalpeau again. He will tell you that all of his son's belongings are still in his room upstairs. Head upstairs and investigate the painting on the wall. You will get an option to look at a strange letter, so do so.

Once you have the letter, head to the weapon shop at K-7 and talk to Exoroche. He will tell you that you need to dip the letter on a well in Davoi to have the ink appear. At this point you are now ready to head to Davoi.

Once in Davoi, make your way to the village well at G-9. Clear all of the orcs from around the well, saving TP. Click on the well to spawn two NM orcs, One-Eyed Gwajboj and Three-Eyed Prozpuz. When you kill them, an item called a Well Weight will drop. Trade the item to the well for a cutscene.

Return to Northern San d'Oria and speak with Ailbeche. He talks about a lake in Jugner Forest. Now go to Jugner Forest and head to the Maiden's Spring which is located in E-6 of the map. Once you approach the well, you will get a really cool cutscene in which most of the storyline from the quests will wrap up.

After the cutscene, head back to San d'Oria and go to Prince Trion's Chamber in Chateau d'Oraguille to get your Gallant Surcoat.

I just got my Pld to 60 and after a horrible time in Castle Zvahl Baileys, I decided that I would try doing this part of the quest on my own. When I saw the info given on ZAM, I figured the fight would be a piece of cake. I unfortunately didn't check the date of the postings. The information is dated and pretty much entirely wrong. I'm putting this up in hopes that someone considering soloing this fight or the such has a better idea of what they're getting into.

The RNG has approx 10,000 HP.

Now as for my experience, I went as 85WAR/SAM41 along with a level 70 Soothing Healer Npc. Based on the info from ZAM I figured I could just take out the RNG real quick and work away slowly at the PLD. I used Retaliation, Restraint, and Mighty Strikes off the bat, didn't remember Warcry. With full Tp from clearing out the zone beforehand, I let loose with Sekkanoki and a Raging Rush SC that totalled about 2400 DMG. This is about the point I realized ZAM had screwed me over and things were going to be more interesting than planned. I used meditate and let loose with another WS shortly after, continuing to cut away at its health. With Seigan and Third Eye I was able to dodge some of the hits coming my way, but together and on top of you, these mobs take down any shields pretty quick. When they do connect, both NMS hit me for on average 80-120 DMG. My Npc kept me alive for the better part of this fight, spamming Cures, I know I saw at least 2 Cure V's in there. One-Eyed Gwajboj (PLD) used Cure IV twice to heal Three-Eyed Prozpuz while i fought him, gave him back 740 hp. In the end was about 10,000 DMG dealt. On a positive note, if you kill him fast enough he won't get to use Eagle Eye Shot, at least he didn’t in my case.

The PLD NM has apprx. 11,500 HP.

When I started fighting One-Eyed Gwajboj, I had about half my hp left and my npc was just about out of mp, I battled OeG to about 75% when things were looking grim, with about 300 hp left I disengaged him and disbanded with my npc. I managed to respawn my npc with 120 hp left, I quickly threw up third-eye, and luckily bought myself enough time for a cure V. After this point it was a cospletely different fight. On his own OeG misses many more of his attacks, and third-eye was much more effective. My npc got me back up to full health and I stayed in the green for the remainder of the fight. Used Invincible around 40% remaining for me. In the end, was about 11,500 DMG that was needed, he starts to spam Cure IV at low HP.

Lucky fight, but I managed to pull it off, and got my gallant surcoat.

Hope this helps. good luck!

Just did this fight! Wanted to make sure anyone trying to do this one knows that you can spawn the two NMs with sneak up and neither of them will attack you. I went as 73 Drg/Sam with 75 Smn/Whm to help and 55 Blm/Whm for backup cures. Cleared the area of orcs, popped a silent oil, and spawned the NMs. Smn pulled back One-Eyed with Garuda, and I proceeded to seigan tank him for most of the fight. This guy has a lot of HP, but the fight wasn't bad. He didn't manage to hit me much, but when he did, he did about 100 damage per hit. I spammed Penta Thrust, and the Smn used Garuda and Carby. The fight was over pretty quickly. Now I have my shiny, new Gallant Surcoat! :D Yay! If any of my fellow Paladins need help with any part of this quest and are on Asura, feel free to send a /t to Gwendolyn! Good luck!

I found it relatively easy. Took me five hours to get coffer and key. Arhiman's all the way.Hunted down a few NM's in there as well. Besieged, recalled all of my LS buddies that could and wanted to stay to help. 75THF/37WAR and a 74PLD/37WAR. Cleared the area, popped them. PLD vs. PLD and THF vs. RNG. I killed the orc's that we missed. Called in my NPC, 74PLD called in his. Me and the THF finished the RNG off, then moved to help the PLD. ((Vorp Blade is lovely)) Got the weight, traded it, got the CS, ran to N. Sandy, Jugner, then back to Sandy. ((I'm just glad Sandy had control of Jugner!)) Talked to Trion. Gallant Surcoat Obtained!

59WHM/29BLM: Blackraine
60RDM/30DRK: Haplo
75THF/37WAR: Vadian

...They helped me grab coffer, NM's, and a coffer key. Fer and Vad helped with the NM's. Much love, DDOOD. <3

just attempted to solo this as thf75/nin with only acid bolts during the Xbow extra delay glitch I did the zone to caves trick to lose the rng...got the pld to about 20% when the CURE IV's were outdoing my dmg sometimes (im wasnt exactly geared XD) but another thf was farming so i invited him and we took it out pretty quick the only thing that was takeing out my shadows was his flash and Banish II spams realy
so ya easily soloable by a thf75 if u have the tools (i used 2 stacks) and bloody bolts would def help

I just finished this quest finally after putting it on the backburner for so long, and just wanted to share my experience.

You only have to have pld as your main when you first talk to Trion to flag the quest. After that you can be any job you want.

The rest just follow the guide and hope theres not too many ppl farming in castle Zvhal bailey and poping coffers regularly.

Now, when i went to do the nm fight in Davoi i went as 75 nin/war. I popped the nms on the well and had my nin af boots on at night (+25% movement speed) Evasion gear and defender up.
I hauled *** to the monastic cavern zone training all the orcs on the way. When I came back out i only saw 1 nm and figured it was the pld, not knowing which was the pld, 1 eye or 3 eyes.

I voked, and started fighting, then realizing i had the rng when he pulled out his bow. Got hit once hit pretty hard actually 230 something with zerk up.
Killed him, rested. looked at my chat log saw that the pld kept stopping to buff himself so when i zoned the rng was in between me and the pld.

So i popped again ran to the zone, waited till all the mobs i was training caught up to me, zoned. Came back out, rng was still in between. Ran past him to grab pld and had to zone in and out 2 more times before i could get the pld alone and away from the rng.

After that wasnt difficult at all, just a bit of a long fight.
nin paralyze wore pretty quick, but slow and blind stuck well.
He uses invincible at about 50%. And spams cure 4 down under 20%.

Ok, so I did all my AF except for the {Beadeaux} coffer. The Hands were the hardest, taking 9 hours just to find the key. This key took 5 kills, coffer took a long time thanks to 3 others looking for it. I would say The Eldieme is hardest for me.

Ok, so just did this one, PLD55 (me) and a 75 smn, we died twice and the third time One Eyed was still there so we just grabbed him and pulled him away from links. Easies way is to have sneak up when you pop them, the Pld NM(the one you need) automatically attacks and the ranger (worthless one put there just to cause pain) won't link. Then either pull One-eyed East or all the way into water. We did it the third time with me killing all links and smn using Garuda on one-eyed. All in all, really tough, harder then the AF hands for me...

Duoed by me (WHM75/NIN37) and a PLD58/RDM25 who needed it. We cleared everything to the north before popping the NM's. I flashed One-Eyed when it popped, and both of us ran north to the river. Both NM's deaggroed, and I was able to repull it cleanly to the North and West along the river. We fought it there. It was quite difficult, the PLD flashing while I was recasting Stoneskin helped out alot. Finished the fight with about 100MP.

Solod tonight as BST/NIN ate a sis kabob and had 3 beast affinity merits if that mattered (no relic).

Cleared area of links, planned to try popping using the BST AF3 method, didn't know if would work (cast Tonko: Ichi and click ??? just befor it finishes casting). Ended up with rng facing north and pld facing south, rng agrod me, sent carrie at him then sent at pld and ran for zone and heeled, used tp from clearing area to rampage one of the ranger orcs by the zone befor carrie died and I zoned (forgot to clear these first, wasn't expecting to zone nm.) Used call beast and sent at pld, other mnk orc at zone linked, spent a minute killing that befor helping carrie with the nm, carrie was about 20% hp, nm at maybe 70% with about 2:00 minutes left on call beast timer and I heeled and rampaged to take hate and tanked for a good 30 seconds befor having to snarl and get utsusemi back up. Carrie dies with 50 seconds on call beast, I blink tank til it is back up, got hit 3 times (102/114/178) then call beast and snarl.

Second carrie seemed to be higher level, was hitting pld for 100-130 damage a pop and was only taking 40-70 damage (first carrie was doing 80-100 and was taking about the same damage). He started the cure 4 spam at the end, but we just whittled him down to death, 34 xp 80 gil and a well weight, total fight took just under 8 minutes from zoning.

Did this last night with 3 friends, thanks go out to:

Gredoric: 71SMN
Schizm: 75MNK
Athela: 70DRG

First run, I popped the mobs prematurely and we wiped, 2nd run we cleared the area, Gred and Carby kited the RNG while we 3 hammered on the PLD (I was 59PLD), then we all took out the RNG. It was a very easy when done properly and with competent people.

Thanks again guys^^

Thought I would put this up for anyone who had completed in the past. SE changed RNG mob AI. Ive solo'd this 3 times in the past with ease, simply move out of melee range of the rng, and he will slowly take potshots. Very easy to maintain shadows using this method. Now though... the rng mobs will charge you. This makes it next to impossible for 1 char to keep shadows up.

Me and my buddy did his for his PLD and we used 75 PLD/RDM (myself) and 75 RDM/BLM the only problem we had was basically the PLD curing the other mob and the RNG was taking off stoneskin pretty quick. He decided to use chain-spell convert and just aspired and drained all of his HP back.

Very fun fight.

Very epic.

Just got mine today. Spent like 45 min on Castle Zvahl Baileys for getting key and opening coffer (I went with war75/nin37, he killed mobs while I was healing him and resting with Dark Staff). It was painless.

For the Davoi part, I spent like 30 min in Aht Urghan shouting for help, and got a sam75, rdm64, rdm75, smn75 (which also needed to do Davoi part), pld72, pld60, pld60 (me). Killed both NMs very easily at the same time, sam75 and rdm64 doing the pld and rest of the group focused on the rng.

I found much more difficult Eldieme and Garlaige coffer, cause no so much people want to help with those...but I guess it's just luck

really?! A level 75 RDM/NIN soloed it! and they suck at solo, so this must be real easy!

seriously, it is not helpful in the slightest to tell us that you did it with 13 level 75's. Not everyone has a bunch of 75 friends to do this for them.

Anyway, the key mobs are REALLY easy to take down. Especially the BLM demon (Doom Demon) I believe as long as you keep them silenced and otherwise enfeebled.

A Level 59 BLM/WHM, a level 61 PLD/WAR and a level 63 DRK/THF with a level 56 healer NPC will easily take down these mobs. JUst watch out for Ancient MAgic from the Ahriman.

Hi There,

I'd like to say that I don't know HOW some of you found this fight so hard....Last night me (Lev 58 PLD) and my level 75 RDM/NIN friend did it...so basically he did it solo, without too much of a problem. Mind you he has Excalibur, AF2, and Abjurations...

We found the coffer key on like the third kill...and the coffer was like right in front of us...spent 20 mins there.

This is how he managed to do it quite easily....First we cleared the area of mobs...We killed the ranger first because he'll go down easier....Allthough the Paladin will heal the ranger..What my RDM friend did was just keep binding the paladin, cause he can only attack up close, and we'd just back up a few steps and keep killing the ranger. Every time the paladin came unbound, he'd simply bind him again and step back a few...This is all you can really do to help out when a high lvl is doing it for you....Flash whichever one is attacking your friend constantly....itll keep him from taking a lot of dmg. Also, I saved up my TP for spirits within, and got it off twice or three times...As at this level as a paladin the only way you can really DMG these guys is with Spirits. Also, you can heal whoever is helping you of course, besides this your not gonna do much damage. Without having really good gear, might end up having some problems doing enough DMG to the ranger (solo) to outdmg the paladin's heals...But as I said my friend has Excalibur so it wasn't much of a problem. Anyways, now I just need to get 60 so I can wear the coat :P

Fight took about 10 mins...cleared pops around the area and went right into fight. Was fairly easy, but i dont believe either of those NM's can be slept, we tried and blm almost kicked the bucket.

All in all it was fairly easy.

All of this quest was done with my 75thf. Coffer, etc.

For those attempting to get the Zvahl Castle Bailey Coffer Key, you will need to see if the place is cluttered with RMTs farming demon horns, ariman wings, and the NMs dropping drk scrolls like absorb-dex. Normally, they have a systematic pattern where, depending on the number of people they have, will split off to the four holes and decimate everything, meeting at the very basement where they will start all over again. Each team are all lvl 75s, including a thf to pop the coffers and this happens across all servers (check ffxi AH on demon horns). The only thing they don't touch are the arihmans at the center, which makes this place extroadinarily hard to get a coffer key or finding a coffer for that matter. These guys are usually at the castle in between 24 hour NM pops on prime time, so nights or early morning is best time to get the coffer.

Maybe some people don't know their way around Zvahl. I can find Throne Room no problem, but I'd never had to hunt coffers. I think this is a spectacularly well done walkthrough.

Just did this with the following party:
Summoner 75
Ninja 75
Black Mage 75
Paladin 60(me)

I went Paladin, even though I could have used a level 75 job.
Anyway, no problem at all. The area around the well was full with aggroing Decent Challenge, but we took them down fast. There were also 2 elementals which we killed. When everything was death, we still had near full HP and MP, so I just popped them, both aggroed me (they were facing the direction I stood, when I popped them), the summoner send Carbuncle on the Ranger, Black Mage Ninja and I killed the PLD Orc, without any big MP or HP loss. It did take a while, because of the amount of HP. The Ninja had no problem at all, the Black Mage used Freeze 2 and some other spells, but Ninja kept hate. The summoner's avatar got link of 2 orc pops when the Paladin Orc was almost death. No problem at all, Carbuncle tanked 3 Orc's for a bit, then the Ninja started tanking the PLD NM, and I attacked it as well. It went down quickly, although halfway the Ninja went down to 550 HP once when losing Shadows. I used Cure 4, the Summoner used Cure 3, no problem. Right after it, it was death. The 2 links were also (or nearly) down when the Ranger was death. All that I, as Paladin 60, did was help out by using Flash, and Cure 4 once. Traded the item I got from the Paladin Orc, got a tiny cutscene, while the rest waited for the cutscene to finish, killing any orc pops nearby. I would say, we did it like any group of experienced players would. No problem at all.

Ok, I've duo'd the final orc battle with a 68whm/blm friend and me as 75war/nin, two times now, once for his pld, and again a few days ago for mine. The first time we cleared enough of the area not to get too many links and prepared to pop and run for monastic cavern. Instead what happened is they both popped, the PLD casts protect 4 on the RNG immediately, I voke the PLD, and he comes after me, having just cast a spell so he doesn't stall to cast on me. The RNG didn't link, and I just wailed away on the PLD right there (pulled back a bit of course) with my friend healing me. The RNG of course eventually despawned.
Second time, for mine, we tried this again and it worked out the exact same way. Both times admittedly a few of the nq orcs respawned and linked, which was to be expected since there WERE only two of us and we could only clear the area so fast, but my friend was able to keep them slept while I kept side voking the adds and using rampage for hate keeping on the PLD. I had little trouble keeping utsu up, and the whm rarely had to do more than throw regen and haste on me. Then, both times, we just cleaned up the adds and the appropriate one of us went to trade the well-weight.
Long story short, it can be duo'd by a healer and a tank, and if you do it right you don't even need to worry about the RNG, as I assume either the same basic awareness rules apply to him and he won't link or aggro for 5 seconds after pop, or the two of them pop not quite facing each other and are thereby unable to link.

Hope this helps save any frustration with trying to run to zone.

first i spawned the NMs, then zoned them to the monastic cavern entrance, then waited a while, went outside, followed them as they made their way back, pulled the pld away from the rng and started pwning

he hits for abou 50-70 dmg with phalanx, not too bad
highly resistant to silence and sleep as far as I could tell

fight took awhile 'cause 1) i got a link at midfight (wasnt that bad) and 2) he keeps spamming cure IV at about 25% HP, which was bothersome as i didnt have the MP to spare to nuke and i was hitting for about 5-15 dmg, + 14 dmg from enthunder

all in all, fight took me a bit over 45 mins >_<
but it CAN be solod, just pull it away from other mobs and you're fine

We just got to the well with me PLD55/WHM27, a BLU66/NIN33, MNK75/NIN37 and a RDM75/PLD37.

Easy as ****. Dont get all over sensational about this fight, its 2 relatively easy NM's. Just grab some high levels to help you out.

Did this last night and had a pretty simple time. Party members were:

59 PLD/WAR (me)

WHM tanked the PLD until the rest of us had dispatched the RNG which took about 1 minute. Then we all joined in and helped the WHM (even though he really didn't need help ha ha). Took down the PLD in about 4-5 minutes after defeating the RNG. Just a note, I did absolutely no tanking during this fight.

Just defeated the two NM for this quest. Our setup wasn't ideal, but we made it. We were:
- 75whm
- 71bst
- 64mnk
- 59pld
- 54blm

After clearing the area we let the beastmaster's pet tank the paladin while we killed the ranger. It was a tough fight and we cheered loudly when we'd made it. Good luck to all who need to do this!

Yep. No back up, just 22 Hi potions, an Icerus wing, and good old fashioned Ustu casting.

So yes, it is possible to solo this quest. :D

What a relief. It is a load off your shoulders once you get this done. Let me give you the rundown on how I went about doing this.

Ok make sure you have all of the prerequisites finished. And get all the stuff done in sandy, thats really important, people often forget to talk to the second guy about the paintbrush, and have to go back to sandy before they can open coffer.

Now the fun part...

F.Y.I the coffer part is the hard part of this quest, not the N/M fight. Castle Zhavl Baileys is a maze of deamons eyes yagudos quadovs etc. Make sure before you go you have plenty of oils/powders, or you have some other form of sneak/invis.

Ok, to get people to help me i tried talking to my LS, but it seems everyone hates that zone, so no one helped me. I jumped on with a group going to do the dark spark, and i convinced a few of them to stay with me and help me find a key. Luckily i found a really nice red mage who actually stayed with me through the whole thing. A level 65 bst also helped me with the key part.

We did the camp one room method, and it took about an hour and a half to get the key. No one else was there, so the rdm ran around and looked for the coffer, since he didnt agro anything, and when he found it, he came and led me to it. I got lucky finding a nice high level. Most of the coffers have high level mobs standing around them, and unless you have a party with you you wont be able to kill lots of them, so what i did was take invis off, open the coffer, then use invincible, and use my warp scroll. 2 eyes cast spells that hit me for 800 total so i was still close to dying, but i made it.

Ok now dont forget to head back to sandy and take care of business there. after that the fun part. Getting a group together to do this is the hardest part, the N/m's are actually quite easy. I shouted for several days for help, the RDM who helped me earlier came with, since he needed the surcoat for his pld as well (convenient huh?) We ended up getting 2 more RDM and a monk, so we headed to davoi.

Heres how we did the n/m fight. We killed all the wandering mobs, each got 300 tp from doing so. I popped the n/m, and I provoked the paladin while everyone else worked on the ranger. I was a 59 pld and he hit me for about 70, so i was in no danger. They dropped the ranger in about a minute, and the paladin took about 5 minutes. The ranger did hit hard, so make sure you have a higher level tank the ranger. But be sure pop the n/m as soon as you kill all the other mobs so they dont spawn while fighting.

Now the fun part, tellaport-holla, and head back to sandy, talk to the kid, then use warp scroll, telleport-holla, head to junger, watch the COOLEST cutscene ever, and choco back to sandoria. you dont have to get of chocobo for cs, it looks like you do get off, but its just for the movie. Talk to the prince, get another cool cs, and congrats, yer done :)

so good luck, and best wishes to my fellow paladins.

edit: the whole process, from start to finish, probably 8-9 hours, but thats waiting around and everything like that. but its worth it :)

Day 2: this time was gonna solo... so i get reraiser, reraise scroll expecting to die... so i get in began to run up, aggro eye, thinking they didnt aggro sound >< so... ls lied, but anyway continuing, btw no map so i was lost, get to gob place finaly then dove down 1st key/skill up spot, no coffer so run around and drop on gob oppisiote side to check central 4 points, no good so i go back, and hed to next thing. Soon after checking 6/8 of the points, got party and left

Day 3: walked in lotsa ppl here didnt expect it, check 1st gob spot, then do as day b4 and check central area, there it is... on other side of hole, so i rush around, dive hole on guess, didnt really check i hoped, and tada, im by it... same as the eye... so i equip tele staff, and get ready... drop invis, it aggros... try to open to far.. again, then stand right next to it, by thus time its attacking me physicaly, and im like.. ********** HURRY!" Open coffer, get paintbrush, use tele staff... get to aht urgan whiegate @ like 100hp... anyway guy who teled me to vhalz was standin there asked 'im if he would tele me, payed him again, meh o well was happy, begin to run to sandy, c a blm ive seen may time and asked if she spoke english, 75mith blm btw, and she says yes, whatcha need, asked about 2orc NM's she replied @ how many, i said 2 for sure, 1 ls mate nother joined lil later, so she said ok gimme lil, and well... got to sandy did CS's then i got D2 to whitegate to gather together, and get holla from there from ls person, and well.. now we have 11 higher lvl ppl there, im on /follow on rdm, who was checking NM's i guess... but anyway, aggro one mob myself, get to spot 3 mobs beging raped, get 3 more, kill em pop nm's me and other pld take pld, and whm helps us, so they down the rng in like 2mins pld goes down like 30seconds later, super easy.. but anyway get item, boose, whm in my ls, hollas me and follows to sandy, do CS's, tele holla again, run to lake, after CS 3rd holla, this is #4 outta him so far ty if u read this~, run to sandy, get to trions, watch the, as the guide says, CS, which i must agree everything theres right except maps dont load btw, and well get my surcoat and tada..

I just took this yesterday with 4 people and one of the 4 people didn't really do anything. Super easy basically it was a joke and nobody was near death and I had PLENTY of MP ^^;

We were:
75WHM/BLM <- me

Basically we killed a couple of the mobs around the well. They conned EP at 75, only took like 3 orcs and then I popped the NMs.
When the NMs popped the 75 NIN voked the RNG and the 68 NIN voked the PLD.
The 75 NIN soloed the RNG while tanking basically both the RNG and the PLD, kinda sharing hate with the other NIN though. The Cor.. didn't really do anything except back-up heal which wasn't too necessary seeing as I barely even had to cure... and gave NIN roll to the NINs and it basically stuck until the NMs were dead, never needed to be re-rolled. A couple of those EP Orcs did respawn and link but the 68 NIN soloed the links at the 75 NIN basically soloed without any real problem, the RNG.

Nobody's HP ever fell below yellow, the fight was fast and easy and could have easily been trioed by 2 75 NINs and a 75 WHM. I even see it possible for a 75 NIN and WHM to duo it. Debuffs stick on the NMs and all links at 75 can easilly be slept for a good long while, making pops not so much of a threat.

I went there expecting that I was going to need this alliance seeing as I read the post where someone went with 12 people and 2 level 75 tanks and they failed like 7 times or whatever. So I was prepared and all with RR3 and ready to take off to Monastic Cavern if anything went wrong. But it was seriously a joke. Just wanna let you all know that this fight does not require an alliance if anything sometimes alliances are hard to control and can sometimes end up in a mess.

just so you know...

did it yesterday.

we were 5:

pld 60(me)
thf 60
smn 75
brd 75

fight lasted 20 mins.
Mnk died after a few mins cause he took hate from both nm and rng nm two houred him, prolly after those astral flows from ifrit that took the rng in a bad condition.
smn astral flow with ifrit.
it was a very long fight,we all used our 2h.i tanked the pld mob for the last 5 mins.
We got 3 others aggro.Brd kept sleeping the links and double balladed us.
His 2h allowed us to retain an unlimited amount of mp while it lasted.

so,no,it's not that hard and no,you dont need plenty of 75,maybe 2 smn :D

Just duo'd the Orc NMs as 75 WAR/NIN (i needed AF) and friend, 75 RDM/NIN. Took about an hour and a half in the end after several instances of having to give up and zone to monastic when we got adds etc.

Our strategy was to pop NMs, train them to monastic then voke the PLD one as it was walking back.

    try 1

i popped NMs with full sky tanking gear for WAR, phalanx 2, Fish mithkabob, defender, earth staff. NMs appeared and i made to monastic zone with the RNG in pursuit without taking a single hit. we then killed RNG NM on way back to well . unfortunately the PLD had de-popped by the time we got back to well so we had to start over.

    try 2

It was still a lil confusing what we should be doing to each mob to get the RNG to ignore us, and PLD to follow. 2nd time we tried RDM sleep RNG while i provoke PLD. We made it to monastic zone ok but faced with problem that both NMs were walking back together (at this point, a well known bismark RMT who camps davoi 24/7 was murdered by the 2 NMs). eventually we succeeded in pulling the PLD to a relatively link-free part of the corridor. It wasnt long before we got pop-links and had to zone however.

    try 3

This wasnt actually a seperate NM pop. We grabbed the PLD again after resting to full (he walks very slowly back to the well from monastic zone). This time things were going much better, RDMs merit enfeebles and my def seetup basically destroyed any chance it had of damaging me, we did get 2 links (almost unavoidable) but a passing THF kindly dealt with those. that 1 try from when PLD started swinging at me to when it died was about 15mins, it does have LOTS of HPs. even with WARs crappy eva, throw a 75 RDMs enfeebles at it and WAR/NIN should have no troubles tanking it. only time shadows dropped was for using my 2hr.

Got Well weight :D so yeah, its not terribly difficult to duo/solo provided you get a wide variety of debuffs on it early. good luck all.

The general rule of thumb is that only the two pieces of AF that you get directly out of a Treasure Coffer require you to be the correct job. The other three pieces, including intermediate Key Items, can be obtained as any job or level as long as the quest has been fully flagged up to the point of the Coffer.

Yesterday morning after completing PLD AF2, I spoke to Prince Trion as PLD50, and Under Oath appeared in my quest log. Then I changed jobs to NIN75 and finished speaking to Vemalpeau, Najjar, and Ulassa as NIN75, just as described in the walkthrough to fully flag this quest up to the point where I would need Mique's Paintbrush out of Castle Zvahl Coffer.

Last night, I stopped by Jeuno and tried talking to Guslam in Upper Jeuno for AF Gauntlets, but he wouldn't give me the quest as NIN75 (of course). So I changed back to PLD50 real quick and got Borghertz's Stalwart Hands flagged.

I already had an Eldieme Necropolis Coffer Key from a skill-up party in the past, so this morning I went to look for the Coffer as WHM47 (for Teleport-Vahzl) in the zone that is only accessible via Beaucedine Glacier. I was in luck and lo and behold, the Coffer was there. Prepared to aggro and die, I opened the Eldieme Coffer as WHM47 and got my Old Gauntlets key item. Luckily, no mobs were close enough to aggro when Sneak was removed upon opening the Coffer, so I walked back to Jeuno and talked to Guslam again (still WHM47), at which point he says only Borghertz had the skill to repair the Old Gauntlets. This being my 5th AF Hands quest, I knew to go down to Port Jeuno and talk to the box on the crates in the AH area. While still WHM47, Borghertz's ghost appeared and told me to get him Shadow Flames.

So I changed jobs to NIN75/WHM37 (my job/subjob combo for soloing), and shouted for Teleport-Vahzl. After arriving in Castle Zvahl Baileys, I popped Dark Spark and proceeded to make quick work of him and got my Shadow Flames key item. I then went to the corner rooms with Demons in them that can drop Coffer Key. Eventually got Castle Zvahl Coffer Key to drop after killing several Ahrimans and Demons in the corner rooms. Finally found the Coffer and opened it as NIN75/WHM37. Got Mique's Paintbrush key item and Mijin Gakure'd for a quick trip back to Home Point.

I returned to Port Jeuno and received my Gallant Gauntlets from Borghertz, then went to San d'Oria to talk to Vemalpeau, get the Strange Letter key item, and talk to Exoroche, all while still NIN75. Now I'm ready to get a partner to duo the Orc NMs in Davoi.

Sorry for all the details, and sorry for any confusion regarding how I did AF3 and AF Hands simultaneously. I included all the details just as evidence of my opening statement: Except for the two pieces of AF that you get directly out of Coffers without any specific quest in your quest log, you can be any job or level to get Key Items out of Coffers, as long as you've fully flagged the quest up to the point of the Coffer. Only the two AF pieces that you get directly out of a Coffer require you to be the correct job.

Finally got my surcoat today

Been shouting in jeuno and Whitegate for days but the selfish bastards wouldnt help (I did a search and saw 300 ppl in Whitegate 70-75) even though they were obviously not busy as they were sitting around doing **** all.

Anyway I finally get a tell from a 75 Mnk/nin (Seefinn), he says he'll help me no problem. Need more ppl so I shout for a while longer even offering money...
Get a tell from a 69 blm (Teppy) saying she'll help. Then another from someone I did G1 with 58 rdm (Wayan).

Well the mnk says we should just go and get it done, Im of course a bit nervous lol. We get there and I use a tav taco a reraise potion and a yag drink and we spawn the Nm's. I tank the pld while Seefinn goes to work tanking and ripping the **** out of the rng. We get a link and eventually the blm and I die as well as the rdm. By this time Seefinn was done with the rng and started on the pld all the while being attacked by the links. pld actually went down pretty fast considering... anyway near the end the ******* started to spam cure Iv which was a *****. Eventually he goes down and i re raise myself so I can lot on the item!

Woot surcoat at last! pld hit me for 90 dmg a swing btw

I just did the fight in Davoi for this and we just spawned and fought them. My party was:
Me= 60PLD/30war

We cleared everything out of the area the WHM rested and i spawned them. The PLD tanked the Paladin one. The NIN tanked the Ranger one while myself and the WHM attacked the Ranger. Once the Ranger fell we all attacked the Paladin and finished it with no problems.

I just did this quest tonight but had trouble with the zoning method described below. I went with 4 other people:

I popped the 2 NMs and we all zoned to Monastic Cavern at H-11, but the RNG would not depop. We did this twice, and both times, all the linked orcs depopped, but the PLD and RNG walked back slowly. Since the PLD immediately starts casting buffs when you pop them, he was close to the end of the train, and so was the first to return to the well. Because of that, we couldn't then pull him after zoning without aggroing the RNG.

On the third and final try, I zoned the train and the THF pulled the PLD at the intersection just north of the Monastic Cavern zone. Everyone else except the THF zoned as well. The RNG NM walked back to the well as usual, but since the THF pulled the PLD far enough away, he didn't link and we were able to kill the PLD easily.

Many thanks to my fellow pirates: Amaru, Buuyuu, Fuji, and Xberserker. :D

The monk didnt want to tank it but once he used asuren fists(sp?) it the first seconds of battle he was tank. lol. the nin help his own but took about 200dmg while soloing it the MNK too around 700 DMG but BLM and PLD's cured him. so please if you value your life to not try to tank these.

I'm fully aware of the time difference between the above post and my reply, but just in case anyone happens to be reading through, I just have to say "OMG puh-leeeze!"

By all rights, a level 60ish PLD is what is supposed to be tanking this fight, in a level-appropriate party/alliance (having done this myself as a 75, I'm nt sure which it requires). This fight is the final battle in the quest for a PLD to receive a level 60 piece of armor for themselves, the intention being that the PLD tank this fight in order to earn their reward.

Sure, the easy way to do it is to get one or two lvl 75's to help. As I said, I did that myself, except I was the 75. But the intent is that a level-appropriate group does this fight. So don't go telling people they shouldn't tank this the way it was intended.

Zoned back in and all that was left was the pld one which was walking back to the well.

I pulled him to a safe spot with no links and took him down. fun times.

Thanks for the advice, I did the same thing today to get my well weight. The setup was 60 PLD/WAR (me), 60 WHM/BLM and 60 SAM/THF.

I pulled the 2 nms orcs and all the orcs around them back to the zone and then when I came back in I provoked the PLD orc. The fight took a long time but we had help from a 75 drg that was running by when the orc was at about 45% hp.

I was able to tank it just fine - I just used tacos for food.
