Summary

Track down Semih Lafihna, who has gone down to check out matters at the Ranguemont Pass, and hand her a twinstone earring.

Walkthrough

EDIT:::: i.e. Full moon: needs to actually say "full moon" on your clock. The moon on it's waning cycle, is only "full moon" at 95%-100%, at waxing it is full at 90%-100%-10%

To begin this quest you must be a lvl 40 ranger and speak to Perih Vashai at K-7 in Windurst Woods.

She will tell you to speak with the Sibyl Guard Semih Lafihna in Ranguemont Pass, which can be reached in the northeast of East Ronfaure near San d'Oria. When you enter the pass proceed north until you reach the guarded door, and talk to Perchond at F-10.

After the cutscene, have Myffore open the door and head through. Head north and east, but head north at the T and northwest until you find the Evil Weapons at E-5. Kill until a Glittersand drops.

Head back out of the pass, taking the western path when you have a choice since that door was one-way. Circle around and trade the glittersand to Perchond; he will give you a key item Perchond's Envelope.

Head now to Jugner Forest and at I-6 near the large lake you will find Alexius. He will tell you to inspect the ??? just south of the lake, at H-6, during the full moon. For the moon to be full, the cycle needs to be >90% - check this with /clock - the moon % changes 2.5% per games day (real life hour) I believe, so that will help plan when to return.

After you get the ??? cutscene, simply return to Perih Vashai in Windurst and claim your Sniping Bow.

Ok, I decided to make this guide more understandable. So I'll make it very clear.

1. Get the quest
2. Go to Rangemount Pass
3. Speak With Perchond (get the cs)
4. Go to D-5 http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/zonedb/37 = map
5. Fight the evil weapons there until a drop
6. Use the map to guide yourself back to Perchond and trade the sand.
7. Head to Jugner Forest I-6 and talk to Alexius.
8. Go to the ??? at H-6 (I havent completed this part as I cant find the ??? "where the river meets the lake", all I found was a ??? on a tree, but Im assuming that it will pop near the river when the moon is correct.)
9. Go back to Windurst and talk to Perih Vashai to get your bow.
10. Congratulations - 10 easy steps to getting something done. Shouldnt life be this simple?

lol Apperntly we had one of the worse drop rate, we got it on the 6th weapon killed. But we had alittle fun in the mean time...there was an invisible wall that lead to a room like at Crawler's Nest, anyone doing Zilart atm can probably make quite a few assumptions...I know I did. Also, we found the weapons by the "Waters of Oblivion". The sad thing was, it was just a puddle XD

My RNG is at the level to get this so-I-hear piece of ****. But my question is, does the Glittersand drop no matter what job you are? Could I go murder these things as RDM for the sand?

Edit:
I got me the Glittersand, me (RNG) and a WHM friend went and got one first kill. But if anyone still wants to answer my above question, feel free.

I can confirm this. I just got one on my first mob as a rdm(though i had to sleepga the other 2) and I was still able to get the cutscene for the quest. Bring whatever job you like, you just have to start the quest as ranger in windurst.

Me (WHM) and 2 LS friends (both DRKs) were NM hunting in the Pass and we were killing everything in our path. We killed 3 weapons and got 2 drops. None of us have Ranger anywhere near lvl 40 and we of course didn't start the quest. The sand will drop at anytime, with any job.

Once you finish this quest and get the bow, can you simply discard it? Or will that mess up the future AF quests?

I did this last night solo. It was really easy actually. Just walked up to the room with Evil Weapons, waited for the right moment, shot one then used Shadowbind. I then pummled him Barrage, Holy Bolts and sleep bolts. 2nd kill, got drop. Not hard at all...

Ok, my RNG is 45, so I figured I'd finally buckle down and get this stupid bow so I can actually think about my other AF. My question is, do I have to be RNG while I do this quest? or just to activate it? I'd like to be able to use my 64PLD and make this easier on myself.

The answer is:
No, you don't have to be a RNG to do this quest, but you do have to be on RNG to activate it.

Did this as a RDM today.
not a bad drop it seems.

Sin Hunter - AF1
# Oct 18 2004 at 2:39 PM Rating: Decent
This Quest is hella easy. The only part that sucks is trying to catch the moon at the right phase moon phase > 90%. There is a post that goes in to great details further down the page, and that's what I used to quickly finish the quest, at least up until the last cut scene... still waiting on the moon.

Unless you plan on having people help you with your other AF gear and need the quest done right away, there is really no reason to do this in your low 40s, unless you just want to brag to your friends. I did the quest at level 50. Nothing agro'd me, and I was able to get the sand on the second drop. If you when you barrage for 932 on one, bind and pluck another to death 140 a shot, well, you can see how easy it is. It's frustrating without a map, lol, but like I said, follow the thread written by "nsigfri." It will help if you're like me and too lazy to get a map for a zone you hardly ever navigate. So yah, if you really don't need it save yourself the hassle of asking for help, get to 50, sub nin if you want and kill them all!! Bloody bolts are cool, but when you don't get hit, you don't need them, know what I mean? ^^ If you would like help though, chances are, I'm not in a group.. if you're on Kujata server, lets do it!
yyyyyyy

well just got done with this beauty why make us waste all this time? lol did it at 48rng/nin and had no problems (used bloody bolts :)) took about 10 of the weapons to get it now just to wait till tommorow for full moon

I think this Quest on this site is wrong or incomplete.

The name of the quest I have in game is Called "Sin Hunting"

Client: Perih Vashai
(Vashai's Residence, Windhurst Woods)

Summary:
Track down Semih Lafihna who has gone to
check out matters at the Ranguemont Pass,
and hand her a twinstone earring.

So.....what does Semih Lafihna have to do with quest?

the name "Crime Hunting" is the translation from Japanese. the NA version calls it Sin hunting. The actual quest should be the same, but the name is different. You will find that lot of info on this site is a translated version of Japanese. Much info is gotten from Mystery Tours, and lots of info is submitted. The best thing I can suggest is to be flexible with the name. as long as it looks somewhat familiar, I would just go along with it. Make a post saying what the NA name is, but please dont say that the current name is wrong.

There must be something good about this bow. Like a hidden attribute or something. I can't believe that it would just be so bad. Like maybe if you shoot it alot it gets better or who knows. I mean it just can't be that bad.

It's just the AF1 bow for rangers. All the AF1 weapons are 'so-so' in my opinion and can be replaced by stronger weapons in a few levels. They aren't supposed to be 'ultimate weapons' for your job. But still, you need to finish this quest for the weapon before you can recieve the other AF quests, and the AF armor is certainly worth it.

hehe in this case this weapon can be easily replaced by the lvl 40 +1 Bow(War Bow+1 I think)

War is 50
You mean Battle Bow (or Shikar, for that matter)
...Most AF weapons are good for a few levels at least...
This one is useless forever.

Well... All I can say is yes, the bow truly sucks... but you need to finish this one to get to the stuff worth having soooo...

On a note about finishing this quest I did it at 45RNG/22WAR with the help of a 45WHM/22BLM, a 45DRG/22??? and a 45PLD/22WAR. It was rather simple at that point as most of the MOBs didn't aggro us except for a couple of gobs we were more than able to handle.

As for the drop... 3 Weapons, 1 drop. Wasn't as hard as some people have let on.

I don't recommend people to rush out and do this AF1 right away at 40 since the bow is rather useless anyway. Just wait and do it when yer 1/2 way to the next AF quests :P

Here are some corrections and elaborations on this quest from when I went through it.

This quest is actually called "Sin Hunting" - to begin you must be lvl 40 ranger and speak to Perih Vashain in Windurst Woods at (K-7).

She will tell you to speak with the Sibyl Guard Semih Lafihna in Ranguemont Pass, which can be reached in the northeast of E Ronfuare near San d'Oria. When you enter the pass proceed north until you reach the guarded door, and talk to Perchond (F-10).

After the cutscene, have Myffore open the door and head through - from this point on all bats and gobs will likely aggro you, so bring a red mage friend to help out (thanks P). Start off going north and east, but head north at the T and northwest until you find the Evil Weapons at (E-5). Kill until a "pinch of glittersand" drops.

Head back out of the pass, taking the western path when you have a choice since that door was one-way. Circle around and trade the glittersand to Perchond; he will give you a key item "Perchond's Envelope."

Head now to Jugnur Forest and near the large lake you will find Alexius (I-6). He is the merchant - speak to him and he will tell you to inspect the ??? just south of the lake, at H-6, during the full moon. For the moon to be full, the cycle needs to be >90% - check this with /clock - the moon % changes 2.5% per games day (real life hour) I believe, so that will help plan when to return.

After you get the ??? cutscene, simply return to Perih Vashain in Windurst and claim your own personal ranger bow of suck.

Shikaree M must die!

Thank you nsigfri for your sumary.

Once I got this quest I did it with my 57 BSt and did not get bow after cutscene.

The guide says nothing about going back to Wind so I was panicing that I may have messed up quest by using BST.

I do not care about the bow but I atleast want it done :)

I recommend having Treasure hunter. I didnt' know what I was getting into on this quest so I asked for high level help. I had a 3 guys (from 58-61 or so) come help me. I was somewhat embarassed when I check the weapons and they were easy prey to me at 42. If I had to, I probably could have solo'd them (glad I didn thave to though).

Anyway, this quest is more annoying than it is hard. I had to fight about 20 of these before the sand finally dropped for me. They spawn 3 at a time, and it takes like 10-15 mins before they respawn, so it took a while. I was getting ready to quit and call it a night when I finally got the drop. Frustrating.
hmm

The weapon is the Sniper Bow (aka the ranger af weapon of suck)so dont be in any rush to get it, the lv 40 +1 bow is much better. Also beware the evil weapons on the pass, there are 3 of them in the same room and only one drops the item my suggestion is to get an nice lv 75 jp to help you like i did or wait til lv 50. Once at the forest you must check the ??? while the moon is between 90% and 90%. (really sucks if your at 89%waning) the moons changes 2.5% every hour i believe (real time). When you check the ??? you get a cutscene then you have to take the nice ride/run/walk back to windurst and talk to the chiefteness again, and low and behold you get the ranger af bow of suck (just throw it in yor safe and keep it, no use getting rid of it after all that trouble.

In answer to this... no... the only MOBs you have to kill for this AF quest are the 3 Weapons (and any MOBs that aggro you on the way TO the 3 Weapons). When you click the ??? you get to watch a charming cut scene which is then continued when you return to Windy and talk to the chieftainess again.
