Summary

You've received a letter from the dark knight, Zeid. He says he has a new trial for you and Chaosbringer.

Description

After completing the Blade of Darkness, head to J-7 and talk to Gumbah again. He'll give you a letter from Zeid, telling you that you can complete the Chaosbringer sword.

Use the sword to deal killing blows to another 100 mobs, bringing your total kills with the weapon to 200. Then, head to J-7 on the first map of Gusgen Mines and trade the greatsword to the ??? at the small pond. Afer a cutscene with Zeid, you will receive your new Deathbringer.

If you threw away the original sword, you can take the boat in Palborough Mines again to get a new one.

Ok hopefully to get people to stop asking the same question over and over. This quest is really simple people, don't make it harder then it is. I Did this with a level 18 War in an hour and a half. How? here let me tell you;

1. Talk to Gumbah again. (ie follow the instructions above.)

2. Change your main to War or Drk. Here i was an 18 War making it easy to "farm"
Also if you have auto-target off turn it on.

3. If you're 18 you can easily farm so get yourself a ranged attack, This MUST be something that won't kill bees outside of bastok if you actually hit it. I used a level 14 boomerang.

4. Go outside, Range attack a bee and repeat this on a bunch of bees until you have a bunch of them, I tended to go with 10. Note: I didn't rest this entire quest. How ever you can rest, zone, die stop go as you please.

5. once you have a good number of bees, turn around and face them. get more then one on your screen so your Auto-target (that you turned on in step 2) will work.

6. draw your sword, you'll attack kill one, go on to the next. if you're lucky you'll have a few that your ranged attack it and it will only take 1 swing to kill it, then your auto attack will go moving you to your next target. (assuming you can see them.) This will eliminate that long wait period between attacking mobs and often you can get a few kills in the matter of no time.

7. You will probably have to move while killing bees as they will circle around you, don't be afraid to move around a bit. I found keeping my target locked and going into first person view to make a quick spin around the mob made things easier.

8. once you have all 100 of your kills head to gusgen mines. Hint:if you bring sneak you will be fine.

9. Head to (J-7) on your first map.
- right
- left
- right
- right

10. trade your sword to the ??? you find there, make sure you have sneak up so the NM and other monster don't bother you. Watch the cut scene, he'll give you you're sword and you're done. yay.

i completed this quest this morning with my 35drk just so i could make a little gil off of the sword instead of dropping it, and i was bored. but just a word to the not so wise in case anyone else doesn't know (because i had no clue). the place where you go to trade the chaosbringer to the "???" in the pool at gusgen mines is also the same spot where a NM named Smothered Schmidt spawns. he is a lvl 36-38 ghost NM. i know this because he killed me on my first attempt at trading the sword. i saw his name and knew it was a NM, but before i could run he bound me and beat the crap out of me. when bound wore off i thought i might still have a chance to run and had 250hp left. then he slept me. after a couple spells and a critical hit my 35drk was waking up in southern san d'oria again. made the choco trip again and figured he wouldn't be there this time since he was an NM after all. thankfully i was right and i was able to trade the sword the second time. just thought i would possibly save someone a little trouble by offering this warning. when you get to the area of the pool and you see a ghost, TURN AROUND AND RUN, the regular ghosts do not spawn in the area near that pool so it can only be the NM ghost. get out and wait, unless you are strong enough to take on the NM. have fun and don't die. (thankfully i did not delevel, but still, grrrrrr).
So easy!

Easy Counting method

When you get this sword, switch to your new DRK, then start killing nothing but Wild Rabbits. Just bash them with the sword. No weaponskills, no magic, just bashing. When you reach level 5, you have just over enough kills (113 kills exactly).

Why do I say Wild Rabbits instead of Huge Hornets? Final Sting messes up the math. If they use it 14+ times, you're screwed. Just slaughter the helpless bunnies.

This is almost too much....100 kills in S.Gustaberg, with a lvl 10 anything really does not take that much time. At lvl 30 100 kills is quick and easy. And at lvl 50 it flies by. Are ya'll really serious about starting this quest...then quitting before you finish the 100 kills??? It's ridiculous!! Just kill and finish, the DRK flag, and Deathbringer quests are so friggin easy.

Hmmm.

I'm lvl 28 DRK; so this sword's usfulness is long past; and i never actually used it.

My GSword skill is atrocious.

Either way, isnt Deathbringer the same sword you get in Final Fantasy IV (Japanese 4) for Cecil; the DRK main character?

Man, XI is so heavily based on IV its cool.

I'm just playing through IV now; the similarities are amazing.

I can confirm that the ??? for this quest is indeed located at J-7 on the first map of Gusgen Mines. (I ended up going in much further than was necessary.)

To get to the pond:

1) Walk into the mines until you hit the first intersection (4-way), where you take a right.

2) At the next intersection, take a left (going right leads to Oldton Movalpolos, good times).

3) After a short distance, there will be a tunnel off to the right. Take this one.

4) Following the bend, there will be another tunnel going off to the right. This takes you to the pond (J-7).

5) At the pond, there is a ??? at the edge of the water. (It seems to be the only one in the whole room.) Trade the Chaosbringer to it, and you should get a cutscene.

Good luck!

Speedy Chaosbringer tactic
# Aug 17 2005 at 8:15 AM Rating: Decent
This is how i eliminated the 666 delay of the chaosbringer:
Lv 25 War/Thf - Outside bastok-
i took 1 swing at a bee and switched target to the next bee i seen and swung at that bee and switced target - continue until you have 5 bees after you and now when you finish off a bee the delay will be reset and youll kill all 5 bees without a long delay time to engage since you will auto target the next bees.
hope this helps you guys out - definately helped me out.
Fun

Actually, when I completed this quest, I just used it (the Chaosbringer), as my starting weapon on my Dark Knight from level one. If you kill mostly Easy Preys with the occasional Decent Challenge thrown in, you will hit the 100 kill mark right around level 5, when you can equip the upgraded sword. So really, there's no reason NOT to do this quest, it's simple and easy, and you level up your new job while you're at it too ^^

Too easy
# Mar 14 2005 at 2:59 PM Rating: Decent
Just way too easy...

I did this as 52 WAR/THF. I killed the critters outside of Bastok in one hit, no trouble at all. Bees, worms, the occasional sapling. I imagine on a lower lvl you might have to whack them a couple times...which could be annoying. But, at that lvl, you can PUNCH them and kill them. Actually, I tried that and did more dmg with punches than the sword at times.

The whole DRK flag quest was rediculously easy...but then, I didn't attempt it until I was level 52, so none of the mobs in the mines even DARED aggro me.

As far as upgrading to this Deathbringer...well...I bought it in Sandy for 3k so I reeaally dont see the purpose of that. I suppose, though, SOMEBODY has to do it.

Answering All the Big Questions
# Mar 12 2005 at 9:18 PM Rating: Decent
You do not need 200 additional kills. You need 100 kills on top of the original 100 kills that you used to unlock the DRK flag.

I'm guessing that if you dropped the sword, you need to total 200 kills since those initial 100 kills have been erased.

You can die, zone, log, change jobs, and do whatever else you want as long as that final tally totals 200.

Also, I didn't talk to Gumbah until I finished doing all my kills, so you do not need this quest active before your kills start getting counted.

Help
# Mar 05 2005 at 10:44 AM Rating: Decent
ok few questions for detahbringer.

1. Do you need 100 kills or 200 kills?
2. I have gotten 100 kills, i traded the sword to the spot and it said nothing happens

if i need 200 kills, that would explain the reason why i cant get the deathbringer
RE: Help
# Mar 08 2005 at 11:41 AM Rating: Decent
don't forget not to zone until youave done the 100 kills. easist way to do this is to equip the Chaosbringer to your higher level war(or other job that can use greatsword) and go right outside of towns
Pond location
# Feb 15 2005 at 12:33 PM Rating: Decent
Pond location with the ??? is at J-7 as mentioned below in a post.

As i tried trading the sword nothing happens, then it says I see monster tracks.

Either this is not the right spot? Or i have not killed 100 enemies yet. I'm going to kill 50 more and try again.

use this macro:

/equip main "Chaosbringer"

always put the item name is it appears in the Equipment menu, sometimes the equip menu uses abbreviated words, for example, my healing macro:

/p .:[Healing HP]:. <call12>
/heal
/equip body "Nomad's Tunic"
/equip hands "Vgd. Gloves"
/equip legs "Nomad's Hose"
/equip feet "Vagabond's Boots"

in the inventory menu the gloves are called "Vagabond's Gloves" in the equip menu they are "Vgd. Gloves"

be sure if there are capital letters in the name of the item, you have to capitalize it:

/equip main "chaosbringer" -- will not work...
/equip main "Chaosbringer" -- you are teh man...

I did this in about half an hour as a level 8 warrior/mnk.

The secret? I equipped my craptastic Wax Sword +1, whacked the mob (bees and tiny mandragoras just outside of Windurst) once, then used a macro to swap to the Chaosbringer to finish it off.

As long as the Chaosbringer is the sword that deals the finishing blow, then the kill counts. Saves a LOT of time and heartache doing it this way. I saw a level 75 WAR that couldn't even kill the mobs as fast as I was, because he was ONLY using the Chaosbringer and it's just so weak.

I recommend doing this on a low level war-as obviously a high level Warrior trying this will one-shot the mobs to death unless you pick stronger mobs to attack.

I hope this helps some of you out who are trying to do this. You don't need to take hours/days/weeks to complete this if you just play it smart. ^_^

LMFAO nice one!!! You can one shot them at lvl 30, 2 hits MAXIMUM. I don't know why you would want to do it as a lower lvl because you'll just have to rest instead of never having to as 30+.
RE: Time saver
# Jan 31 2005 at 12:28 AM Rating: Decent
The 75WAR can kill it in one hit...
I did it as 30WAR and it was one hit to kill the mob with Chaosbringer

can you kill mobs in diffrent zones and still get the advanced version still??? or do you have to stay in the same zone?

All you are doing is completing the quest again more or less, you can zone and the counter will not reset...as long as you change main job to DRK (since you just got it) or WAR, ur fine...
quest confusion
# Nov 29 2004 at 9:28 PM Rating: Decent
I did the flag quest, became a drk, and kept on killing without gettin the quest, I killed 188/200 in total before gettin this quest, i killed about 30 more to be safe and try it out and i got the deathbringer, so I dont believe you need the quest then kill 100 because I just accomplished it

Again, Killed 188/200 before getting the deathbringer quest and got the Deathbringer

Hope it works for you too.. I think i did it this way but then again i have a short memeory, im 99% sure this will work
