SummaryNorg has begun investigating an ancient scroll that was rediscovered as of late. Speak with Tenshodo member Kagetora in Bastok for more details. WalkthroughHead to Norg and speak with Ryoma at H-8 for a cutscene. Next, head to Port Bastok and find Kagetora at F-6 in Warehouse #2, just across from the airship dock. Speak with him and he will send you off to find Ensetsu, who is located at I-5, just northeast of the warehouse. Find him to see more of the story unfold. Travel to Eastern Altepa Desert. Head to H-6, and clear the area of any beetles. Find the ???, and when your party is ready, examine it. Two spider NMs named Tsuchigumo appear. After you slay the NMs, you will receive a key item called a Trick Box. Return to Norg and speak with Ryoma to receive your Zushio and Anju katanas! Just figured I'd throw my two cents in even tho as I've read some level 50's nin's have soloed these guys.. But I went as a 55rdmg/blmg and it was easly soloed that way also.. so good luck....

I just soloed the spiders as a 51NIN/25WAR was quite simple.
-First got some tp by killing the spiders around the ??? (they do link to the NM's to just so ya know so be careful)
-Then put shadows up and used a sneak oil so i could get them 1 at a time.
- hit the ??? moved away and cast hojo on one of the spiders. ( Slow, and blind are very useful in this fight, saves many shadows) Then just fought it like a normal mob kept shadows up and used the paralyzing WS to help with shadows.
- First one didn't hit me once, then went and fought the second one same exact way. But at about 25% health another spider linked, but it missed about every attack so i still was able to finish them both off.
-Examined the ??? again and got the item :)!

Just tried this NIN51/WAR25, I got one down to 38% and the other was at 100%, I screwed up the beginning though because sneak wore off when I was preparing and they both were pounding me down, so I debuffed them and then tanked in full evasion. I'm pretty sure I could have won, oh well.

I just did this as 75 Thf, it was ofcourse too easy.
I dont think i got hit once (but they did remove my shadows mid way thru), i didnt sneak pull i just clicked the ??? and engaged thus i was fighting 2 at the same time (but they didnt hit so i really wouldnt have noticed).
I did read this site first and the mob seemed like too low a level to bother me, and thats exactly how it proved.
I used dancing edge once for 1300+ and i dont know if i got TP again, the 2 spiders were just dead so fast.
My evasion as Thf is capped, i would say that any job 60+ could solo this with a little effort, any job 65+ could solo it with ease and 75's could quite easily let a 3 year old play the fight for them.

I went as my 75 rdm/37blm and it was way easy. Got hit once for 22. Omw to pick up the katana's now. If you need help with this on Gilgamesh, just send me a tell.
Vv easy, but if your going on a job with no native healing power take care for the poison, its very potent and is incurred by a additional effect on regular hits.
They were wiffing a fair bit even on PLDs low eva, hitting for 0 on shield blocks and approx 30 normal hits, take a DD build to kill em fast as you can no need for "tanking" them.

Just soloed NM last night as 56 THF/NIN. Used the tactic posted here of popping a sneak oil before spawning spiders then pulling one away with ranged attack, leaving the other sitting on ???. By the time I had defeated the first spider (around 5min) the other had despawned leaving me to collect Trick box :o)
The fight itself was quite easy - used Nin blind spell, acid bolts and kept utsusemi up. I only took a couple of hits during the fight (it missed alot), each for around 40hp, and ended up with over 650hp at the end of fight. One thing to note is acid spray. The poison seemed quite strong at my lvl, so i would recommend taking a couple of antidotes with you.

Just soloed this as my 75WHM/37NIN. It was cake, I don't think I ever got hit. I just paralyzed and slowed one while I fought the other one. Got the box then back to Norg for my weapons!!

just soled them as a THF 64, they were hitting me a bit hard but nt very often, needed casing utsusemi about 3 times,:P. Very easy and fast fight though

Me (66rdm/nin) and gf (61thf/nin) just did this together. We both had the quest and went to fight, hadn't heard anything about weather you could do it for yourself on a diffrent job, but you can i know now, she poped them and we each killed 1 with our NPC's out(my attacker NPC did decent dmg with 3rd upgrade GS at lvl37). since we were both on quest only had to fight NM's once and we both got item. She only got hit a few time and for verry little dmg, but i did put Protect4 on her, but a 60+ /nin can do this very easy.

Easy quest...i soloed the 2 spiders as a 69 rng...just to be safe i used EES lol...but 2 sidewinders and EES makes it really simple...plus the fact that they miss alot...oh yeah..the smaller one is the hardest...
Finally hit 40 last night in crawlers nest with ninja so i am all exicited this is my 2nd artfact 75/rdm. Start the quest go to altep and its earth weather and a bst is soloing by the ??? And a earth element is near so i 75rdm/nin kill the element so he dont get aggro and pop my spiders. Easy fight i get 1st spider to 50% and bst tries to charm my other spider O.o it aggros him and he start running. It chases after him while im still killin other spider. >.< Kill the 1st one off search the zone and he zoned into west altep examine the ??? no trick box -.- start heading south and my mob finally comes back to me killed it examined the ??/ and got my trick box dam BSt :./
soloed as 75whm/37blm. easy as blah~ no need to clear any mobs lol. the spider is too far away anyway.

70thf/war 73brd/nin built up 100tp berserk warcry sneak attack dancing edge first spider and it took 2456 damage and next dagger hit killed it had 589 att brd tryied to sleep second so i could do same for fun but 5 trys couldent sleep it so i just meleed it took like 40 secs hitting for 120-130 with a harpe so like about 1min total to kill both very easy

I took my scythe (lvl 90 skill) and started meeleeing them with Stoneskin up. They do break stoneskin often and hit hard but it truly is a joke.
The first one I got my scythe to 91 through skill up. The second one I put 5 dots on it and watched it drop HP as I just stood there. And the funny thing is I wasn't even equiped well.
Fights a joke for any 60+. K thx bye <3

Soloed as DRG/NIN 75. 3 min fight, just got TP to 300% b4 fight and killed the first spider with Penta Thrust + Jump + High Jump.
Second spider missed almost every hit.

Yeah agreed about the poison thing i soloed this as a lvl 71samurai/thf and had no trouble at all killing them.
The thing to watch out for is the poison which, i am not positive, but seemed to be inflicted by an additional effect of their regular attack (which didnt land very often) but i did not notice a WS that poisoned me and still, after the fight i found myself losing 25hp/tick! I was worried for a few seconds because, when i went to check the log it didnt seem that i had been hit by anything except one regular attack at the very end of the fight (it said additional effect: poison 25dmg) so i thouhgt it might last a while and, tho my galka sam has 1400hp, i was already down to 800-900 by the time they were dead (i didnt sneak pop, just went for it lol, only had one sneak oil) luckily the effect only lasted about 8 ticks, still i was already fleeing towards rabao, worried i might expire en route when it wore. Wasnt much of a problem for me but might be something to look out for if u are trying this at lower lvls.
Good luck with this oh and sabishii: Me tink hard monsters hard, and easy monsters.... not as hard... douche....

Same as the other guy that soloed it at 44. Spam your elemental wheel and it goes by fast. If the other one despawns and you're still fighting the first one no problem. You'll still get your item when you check the ??? as long as you kill the one you're fighting. Bring antidotes if you want. I subbed RDM for fast cast.
I soloed this yesterday [BRD Lv.74/WHM Lv.37] I did the Sneak-Click-Pull trick. fighting one on one was easy enough - spiders in that area will link so best to kill them first. There is no reason why you have to kill both, the other NM spider will Despawn in and around 2 minutes. Simple watch the spider and wait for it to despawn and then finish the one you have pulled.
Just a note - I had to zone out of Norg and back in to start the next AF.

Last night i decided to put in a little more progress on my AF1 for nin. so i decided what the heck, i was just gonna go out there alone and solo it with my 44 nin (yeah i'm a little arrogant about my nin but eh) so i tossed on a silent oil, hit the ???, 2 spiders popped i pulled back a bit, used Kurynami: Ni, pulled one and fought it. By the time the fight was over the other spider had disappeared. I came out like a champ 400/700 in hp after the fight, and thats cuz i got lazy and wanted to elemental nuke it instead of re-blink. the spider missed me alot so that helped a lot to... just remember to debuf it with ninjutsu and it should be cake!

Like most others on the board, had absolutely no problem soloing this as a 62 RDM.
Haven't seen anyone mention success sleeping these... so I'll throw in my two gil. It should be noted, that I couldn't Sleep II the second NM, even with elemental seal... so either their resist is insane, or they're pretty much immune to it.

I solo'd those spiders yesterday as THF/NIN level 61.
I killed a nearby spider and a beetle to get 100% TP, then I used a Silent Oil and touched the ??? to spawn the NMs. I ran back a little and pulled one of the spiders with Kurayami and killed it really easily. I didn't get hit at all thanks to Utsusemi. I only took about 20 damage because of a special attack that ignores shadows (Acid Spray I think).
Then I attacked the second spider, and killed it as well. In the end, I didn't bother recasting Utsusemi so it hit me twice, for 71 damage each time.
Now I need to go to Norg again to get my Katanas. I think I'm gonna use the one with STR+2 (Zushio) and keep my Nikkariaoe for a few more levels (currently NIN 41).

i'm a little confused by how everyone is saying that these katana aren't that good, when they're the best katana you can have for lvl 40, which is actually the lvl you're supposed to do the quest... sure they suck if you're lvl 50 but thats why they're lvl 40 katana eh?

Sneak pull, enfeebled, elemental wheel, shadows up. Easy, easy fight. I didn't take one point of melee damage, and the only time it hurt my HP was when it used that poison TP move on me.

In that video you only kill one of the spiders. Did you cut out the second spider fight or do you only have to kill one?

Ok, me and a 57DRG took out these spiders. I had no elemental tools which made it extremely difficult.
First off I decided we should take one each and the DRG was nearly gonna get killed so I provoked the other spider as well and we both took on the same one.
Was much quicker and safer. So yeah, everyone attack one spider and move onto next ^^.

whats a culdesac
The best part of Final Fantasy XI is its rich storyline. It separates this game from other MMORPGs. I chose to give my character a storyline that goes along with the game's storyline. I find that this is a more fun way to play the game. Playing the game just to fight in the endgame and collect elite equipment is very boring and is totally missing the main objective of the game, which is to guide your character through the storyline which is to save the world.
A cul de sac is a little circular area, like those rounded dead-ends at the end of some streets where the houses and driveways are all around, but you have room to do a u-turn. Lightbulb-shaped.

lol, just did this, nin is lvl 40, got the quest, then changed to my lvl 70 whm, got a vl 63pld (Deebz) to help out, i poped, he voked one i "TRYED" to sleep one didnt work, just left it on me, WHEN it hit me i only took 20dmg lol, i could have solo'd it without a problem, well now i gotta find the way to norg again>< arg!!

If your 70+ and your doing an af1 I would think you could engage the mob, get up and go take a nap.

lol i agree with u, but hey! what if the they bought the account? noobs 70+ wouldnt know how strongs are the high lv against those spiders.
I beat em easy with a rdm60/nin30, jusy phanlax + stonskin, en spell and ready to go, u cant sleep the spider, but u can bind it and dont remember if gravity works, but bah, they <Too weak> and didnt take any dmg. RDM FTW!!

I soloed this with RNG63/NIN31 and it was easy. I killed the only spider that was there to begin with, then called the NM spiders with about 30% tp or something. Barraged the first spider, then Slug SHot, then two more ranged attacks finished it off. Then I shadowbind the 2nd spider, back up and fired at it from distance til I had the tp to finish it off with Slug Shot.
I started off with shadows up, but I didn't bother recasting during the fight. I think I ended up with about 200-300/972 left. They were hitting for around 40-60 dmg each hit.
The katana aren't all that good, but I'm using the STR+2 DEX-1 katana with a Sakurafubuki +1 and I'm wearing Royal Squires equip, so the DEX-1 is countered with that. I'm gonna stick with those til I can equip the Yoto katana. Some people say the AF katana suck, but I pt using that combo last night and I didn't do too badly.

Just soloed this as a lvl 50/25 nin/rdm. The only time it hit me was when I let utsusemi drop because I was in the middle of my elemental wheel, and it did Sickle Slash for 298 and then a normal hit for 73... outside of that it was a walk in the park. Pulled it with Hojo, (earth elemental was around) and moved back and blinded, then hit it with Blade: Retsu. Ran through an elemental wheel, poisoned, and diaed it, and did a second elemental wheel (that is when it hit me)... Recast utsusemi... 2 more wheels and 2 minutes later it's dead and I am one trick box happier (only fought Tsuchigumo)

I just did this; I'm so happy. I had 2 50's from my LS help me, so it wasn't that hard for me, though I bet the fight would be sort of diffficult without them.

I attempted this fight as a 61THF/30NIN, and to say the least, it was probably the easiest NMs to fight in the world lol.
From the surrounding monsters, I had build up 300%TP in preparation. When the fight started, I used Jubaku, Hojo, and Kurayami on the first NM, then all on the second NM when the timers were ready. They all landed and stuck the entire fight. The first DE did 650 dmg, and brought it to 1/4 hp. During the tnire course of the fight I haven't been hit once, so I don't know their DMG. With about +40 EVA gear, I evaded like 90% of the attacks, and absorbed about 9 hits in total.
After the fight I still had full HP and it took only 3 minutes ^.^

I solo'd spiders as a 75blm/whm... yes I know, overkill. Anyway, they each have about 2800hp. I did thundaga for 1k dmg, blizaga for 830 dmg, firaga for 770, and finished them off with a thundaga for another 1k. Before my last spell they had about 1/10 hp left. They were hitting me for about 40 each. By the time they got through my stoneskin, they were almost dead, so neither got to do a WS move on me.

It was only easy because you fought it at a much higher level than the monsters. If you thought it as a level 40, you would have gotten creamed unless you had a full party or high level help. A monster's difficulty is determined by how strong you are, how much help you have, and how well you are equipped.

We just beat it with 3 people, 55blm, 42rdm, 41war. It was a close fight. We managed to pull off two skillchains and live to tell about it.
One thing to really watch out for is the poison. After the fight, I almost died from the poison.

just did this with my 41NIN and 63RDM friend. absolutely no problems. about 5min fight, never went into yellow hp, RDM left with half MP.

I just did this quest last night. and just so everyone knows. You have to be nin to get the quest. However i Talked to the next people in bastok as a sam, then killed the spiders as my lvl 62 thf. And im pretty sure i talked to him to get the weapons as thf as well. So just so its clear. You CAN kill the spiders as a different job and still get the trick box

Solo'ed both NMs very easily at once as lv64 RDM/BLM. With Phalanx, they hit me for about 0-40 dmg (Stoneskin will last very long). They are unsleepable at my lvl (dunno if rdm 75 can) with Elemental Seal + Sleep II. I didn't get any sickle slash, but they did the usual spider WSes such as Acid Spray & Spider Web.
Took awhile to kill them by myself, but they never got me below 95% HP. Good luck~

It's possible that you can solo the spiders with another job other than nin. Just get all the procedures done first, then before getting a Teleport-Altep, you can use your highest level job to attempt to try to take on these two.
Personally I used a 60THF/30NIN, and found the first part of the battle a breeze. But you MUST take care because the spiders can still do their sickle slash, when one did it to me, I did not have Utsusemi on and took 500 damage, thus coming pretty close to death.

I was thinking I could solo this as 60 thief, but I had a few problems with it...can I still activate the ??? as my thief, and could I sleep the other spider with a sleep arrow?

i was a 46 rdm fishing in rabao and i got conned into doing this fight :)
it was me and a ninja, bard and ranger lvl 40-44 with a blm ~70 .. the ranger died very fast.. you cant sleep these spiders(or st least we couldnt) so i would have 2 tanks.. maybe one to just voke the other spider while still targeting the main one.. just to keep everyone else safe.
i think the black mage took most of the hate.. i was just franticly casting as much as i could and then it was over..
it was easy.. just make sure the area is cleared of spiders before you start.. having another one on the back of your whm could bring the whole thing crashing down.
