SummaryA piece of samurai artifact gear lays hidden in a coffer in Quicksand Caves. WalkthroughNote: To begin this quest, you must have completed The Sacred Katana - SAM AF1 and activated the quest Borghertz's Loyal Hands. Head to Quicksand Caves and find a Quicksand coffer key. These drop from Helm Beetles, Antican Hastatuses, Antican Princepses, Antican Signifier, Sabotender Bailaors, Sand Eaters, Sand Lizards and Sand Spiders. Next, find a treasure coffer. All of the coffer locations are accessible by entering the caves from K-7 in Eastern Altepa Desert. The treasure coffers spawn on the first floor at J-11, J-13 and E-10, and on the second floor at H-8, H-11, E-11, C-9, F-10, K-10 and M-9. OMG!!! I have been camping the eastern altepa desert quicksand caves for the last two days with out a drop in site, when i finally found a reference to a guy having a higher success rate in the western altepa desert quicksand caves. I decided to give it a go before giving up for the day and got my key within five minutes of walking into the j-9 entrance. GL to all those still trying to get this key. Myochin Haidate finally mine!!!

You don't actually have to get the Loyal Hands quest before doing this coffer AF piece. I just did it without having started Loyal Hands and i got my AF pants just fine :)

Ive got both keys woot, just need the Uggaliph Coffer Key >< I only have katana and feet.
AF always drops first, then quest items, then map, then regular item drops

simple question...if you dont have the map yet, whats the chances of getting the map from the coffer chest instead of the AF? ive completed AF1, flagged and am 1/2 completed AF2 and flagged AF4 if thats information of any use.

You ALWAYS get AF first if your on the job that gets AF from the coffer if you want the map then go another job that doesnt get the AF from the coffer. After you get the map on a job that doesnt get AF from the coffer you start getting normal items.

Im soo mad at that damned key. I am level 50 now and trying to start my artifact. I talk to my higher level SAM friends about this one, and they all said they got their key in an EXP party. But..I would be the one with sh*t luck. I partied frequently from 45-50 here, and never ONCE did we get a key drop. Now I have to bribe someone to come kill stuff here to get me a damn key. I just hope my Kuftal key isnt so hellish..

When I went there with an XP pt, some of us were a little late in arriving there, the 4 of us who were there started killing the Helm Beetles... In the 4 that we killed they dropped 2 coffer keys. I have a feeling that the Beetles have the highest drop rate. Hope this helps :)

Good luck with the Quicksands coffer! But the Kuftal one should be easy, especially considering you have a good 4-5 lvls to consider partying in there. The Kuftal one will be cake. In my 4 lvls in that please, I saw at least 5 keys ^^.

I got these, I didnt die once. I had to come back though because I drop'ed @ a wrong place But all in all it took me 30 min no more. Easy with Oils.

I would just like to thank Dargon who walked me to the coffer spot (and thanks to my LS leader Zythe who showed Dargon where the spawn points are lol) and helped me get SAM AF pants. You guys rock! BladesOfHeaven baby!
I'm going to try to get these tonight. From what I understand, you usually get aggro when you take sneak down to pop the coffer. I think I will go with Ninja subbed and a Warp Scroll.

just found it at f10, opened, got 1 EM ant aggro as 54sam/war 4 jinpu's later he was toast, and i was red, but got them and stayed alived!

I didn´t wanna ask LS for help since they helped me yesterday with AF2 so i decided to be the "cool lonely samurai" and do it myself.
I got a stack of sneak oils and headed to the quicksand cave zone at the far south of altepa desert.
I used oil (wasted 2 on the way there and 2 inside) and after running around a bit what do i see? A coffer! :D.
Open, get AF, get aggro, use instant warp, wave goodbye to mobs... DONE!

1) get your AF Great Katana before anything else.
2) Flag FEET AF with Jacrubiax (spelling?)
3) Flag HANDS AF with galka in jueno armor shop.
4) Get a Quicksand Coffer key, as a SAM open chest
I now have the AF Great Katana and the SAM PANTS.
I went as a 51SAM and ultimately died, but it was
worth it. I only lost 700 xp but got the pants.
How I did it:
Walk thru Coca-Cola™ Tunnel. At Alteppa, hook
north and go to the Quicksand Caves entrance right
near the zone to Coca-Cola™.
Go to the drop-off ledge where you all xp. Right
there is a small tunnel. Past that small tunnel
is a network of chambers. Search all of the rooms
until you see the chest. I used about 3 sneak oil
running around down there. Unfortunately, the
ants can hear you when you open the coffer.
BOOGY out of the zone or use a warp scroll as they
pound on you; or simply die like I did.
I have moghancement: Experience so I only lost
700xp instead of 1000xp. Try to take high-levels
with or just a warp scroll.

I've already gotten my Kuftal Coffer hands from just wandering around, following some wall or another, and now I don't need prism powder? Seems pretty cake to me. I've already been wandering around a bit, and gone down into the lower levels. Havn't found the thing yet. But I also havn't had any trouble re-sneaking myself. Hope this luck keeps up. But whoever says that this is impossible without high-level help needs to rethink how they've been looking for these chests.

I have a quick question about this, I'm a thf level 50 with a QS Coffer key. If I party with my Sam friend, he has no key , but he has activated this quest. If we party together and I find a Coffer and I open it, will the AF pants come out of it ? Thanks for your time.

Your friend will have to open the coffer. AFs aren't going to the Treasure Party. It goes in the inventory, only a warning message like "Player opens the Treasure Coffer and find Gallant Coronet." will pops to each party members.

i was lucky enough to find my coffer chest in the first place i looked and with help from mysterytour maps, made it even easier. for a great map site google mysterytour.

I thought I'll post how easy this was, I went to first floor and checked all spawn points but nothing. I didn't know how to get to 2nd floor so i guessed 'll stay there until it spawned. A friend of my ls came and checked 2nd floor for me and He found it. He came for me to 1st floor and took me to the coffer ^^. It didnt took more than 30 min. Btw I didnt have a map, just one that I printed but any how it was damn easy.

This is my very first coffer. I'm now 53sam and I just lost 8k exp on this coffer. /anger /furious I went to try to solo it, with no map and no luck. I can't find the second floor. I entered from the eastern altepa entrance next to korroloka tunnel. Again and again all I do is wonder aimlessly wasting silent oils and losing exp. DO NOT LISTEN TO PEOPLE SAYING THIS IS EASY FELLOW SAMS. It is NOT! If you don't have a map and think you can do this just because you've leveled here a bit may altana be with you.

Completed this quest last night and got my Myochin Haidate. I went as a 50SAM/25WHM and just sneaked myself as necessary. I found my coffer at E-11 on the second floor. There were no mobs close so that when I opended the coffer and sneak wore off, I had no problem. Than I just warped out. A useful site for this map (coffer locations as well) is:

I took my rdm to 52 before I decided to become a sam. I have completed my af2 and want to get my pants. I have the loyal hands quest flaged for my rdm but it is not complete. I can not get it activated for my sam. So my question is... can i do this if i have a different jobs Glove af ativated and not the sam one. I want to get my gloves but i dont want to wait on getting my pants since i have the key already. Any help would be great thanks.

There is a guy that removes all AF Quests, but you'll have to delete all AF first.

Well, I got 6710 gil out of one of these coffers today. I had already got the map and also got another key while I was leveling there so I decided to go back and see what a coffer had waiting for me. I believe the moon phase was around 90% or more. It was a Full moon and 95% when I had logged out about 30 min to an hour after the fact.

This partis easy with silent oil and prism powder u should be ok to find coffer. But watch out when u open it becuase sneak wears off and all the Anticans will be on u. I got killed but it was worth it.

You have to have completed the AF1 to get your AF Sword. Then you have to go to norg and Talk to Jaux... again to "flag" the AF2 Quest at lvl 50. You dont have to complete AF2 to get this quest. You can do them out of order.

Lord Ill and Larry.. quick question... do we have to have the AF2 (boots) complete to do this? Or can you just do it if you have the hands and boots quests flagged? Anyone else know?

I went in as a 51Sam/25WHM and found it pretty fast. I only had to cast sneak 2 times. Also i asked a high lvl to tell me if he found one and he found one very quickly.

I hunted this before when i was a 54sam. Used like 2 stacks of silent oils plus i didnt how to access the 2nd floor.
Getting tierd of shouting for help (for weeks) i decided to give it another try.
Bought 3 stacks of SO and subbed a rdm.
Can you believe i just went in and instead of going to find the second floor i said "hmm let me check the first floor jusnt in case".
On my first chest spot J-11, there is was behind the rock. Almost in disbelief i opened it with 3 of them antoids (checked as decent) in the room facing the other way and frantically trying to find the sneak spell to cast i just went ahead and used a oil instead.
Man this has to be my luckiest thing that happend to me in the game yet and i never really luck out anything.
So happy that i came and wrote it here now 5 mins after i got it (Fri, Oct 08, 04).

Lol i looked in every spot u guys suggested and didn't find jack but then i go to D-12 and i find chest better fix ur notes or some mindless person gunna jump in and sit for it to spawn

well its not that hard just have to get the key then find the chest but trust me when i say this don't think ur a powerful super human guy or somethin and charge in not knowing what can be in there if u do u'll end up like i did goin in half assed with a lvl 33 whm

I have both the hand armor and feet armor AF quests flagged, and I can't get this one. Are you sure that one does not have to complete one of those before being able to get this quest?
Your First and Second AF(s) have to be completed. But I am not sure about this being flagged I think you just go out and get it in the coffers as mentioned in the walkthrough theres no flag.

Does the coffer have a certain respawn time, because when I went in there, I couldn't find it and I followed the Helf Website walkthrough.
Another thing I was wondering, the two places where there is a hole that opens up, the coffer spawns there and I was wondering if it is on top or do I fall in the hole to get it

I pretty much did the same and walked around the first two floors of Quciksand caves and used up 12 Silent Oils with no luck. What is the respawn time for the coffers? I plan on bringing 24 Silent Oils this time and just keep walking in circles until it pops. I really NEED those pants! (|_|)

well my pt was here lvling n i had a sam in the pt, i get a beetle kill it nboom coffer key at lvl 48, also the next to beetles droped the coffer key as well, dam TH2 kicks major ass

from E-10, drop into that trench and continue south... that tunnel will take you to the 2nd floor.
I took a chance and found out today....
After 2 hours, I found my coffer chest on the first floor, J13

Man i didn't know i needed that coffer key for my af pants. Lol i was in the quicksand caves trying to hit level 49 and out of no where i lot for the coffer key and get it!!! i figured i would need it somewhere so i kept it, and by god its for my af pants, thanks

They drop all the time from Helm Beetles, when you're leveling in Quicksand Caves. It's probably the easiest coffer key to get.

Hmm this sounds too easy... (compared to the previous AF quest for Sam) ... whats the catch?
It is and for good reason SAM AF's are the hardest in the game (or at least to my knowlage one of the hardest) The Artifact Quests are hard, those are (three total) The Mogaruku, The Myochin Sune-ate, and the Helm (I forget the name) The rest of your equip. are coffer related.

I wrote this guide. I only included the map locations of the treasure coffers becuase I don't know how allakhazam feels about using links to other sites, anyway here is what I used to find the coffer. This site is EXTREMELY helpful.
