Summary

The spirit of Curilla's father Rainemard seems to be trying to say something.

Walkthrough

You must have completed The Crimson Trial - RDM AF1 and Enveloped in Darkness - RDM AF2, and activated Borghertz's Vermillion Hands to obtain this quest.

Start the quest by speaking to Curilla at I-9 in Chateau d'Oraguille. She will ask you to continue your investigation on what had happened to Raimenard, her father.

Next, head to K-6 in Southern San d'Oria and speak with Sharzalion. He says in order to communicate with a spirit, you must throw an old coin into the fountain in the ruins of Fei'Yin. Fei'Yin is located on the far north end of Beaucedine Glacier.

Head to Fei'Yin. Entering with the quest activated will cause a notorious monster ghost named Miser Murphy to spawn at H-8 on the first map, in the room with the large fountain. Head to the fountain room and kill Miser Murphy, which drops an Antique Coin. Trade the coin to the point at the north end of the fountain, also in H-8, for a cutscene.

After the event, return to Southern San d'Oria and speak with Sharzalion. Then speak with Daggao, the Galka down by the stage to the right. Daggao says he found a strange box in Garlaige Citadel that could possibly be opened with a Nail Puller.

Head to Garlaige Citadel. You need at least four people in your party to get through the first banishing gate. Just past the gate to the left is a room with an oaken box. Clear the room, then examine the box. A notorious monster called Guardian Statue will spawn. Kill the Guardian Statue and it will drop a Nail Puller. Trade this to the oaken box for another cutscene.

Return to Northern San d'Oria. As soon as you zone in, you will receive a final cutscene and receive your Warlock's Chapeau.

I just did this with the help of 75 WHM, 73 SAM, 75 NIN, 75 DRK, 75 MNK and me 58 RDM

For Miser SAM, DRK & NIN and it died b4 the WHM and I got to the fountian. <Too Weak>

As for the Statue it didnt take much with the setup we had (2-5min) both the WHM and I killed our mp keeping the DRK alive (damage tanking lol) but still <Easy Prey>
<Good Luck> to all RDM's out there ^^

Just did these fights this weekend for my RDM friend. We were in the process of wiping to Miser Murphy when a 75 BST and a friend (60s WHM or RDM I think) offered to help. BST did her thing while the dead were raised, and eventually we took it down, but there was no way we would have won otherwise. Thanked the BST & friend who went on their way, and decided to give the doll a shot, even though we'd heard it was tougher than Murphy. Same party setup (minus the BST & friend), but the fight was way easier. Nobody was ever in serious danger. Bring plenty of firepower for Miser Murphy, the shorter that fight, the better.

Our party: SMN 70, THF 67, RDM, BLM, WHM 62.

Grabbed two friends a 75WHM/NIN and a 75WAR/MNK
The white mage had the Reverand Mail with both Sea Cudgels and the WAR had the second to final relic axe.

Miser Murphy took (i timed it) 73 seconds.

The statue took (timed it) 3min 47 seconds.

Haruhara... Muffins you guys rock.

Here's my experience w. these guys:

Miser Murphy:
Went in with a 75whm/37nin and died very fast MM did his drain hits for almost 300-350 on me don't remenber the dmg on the whm but we only scratched him i tried to hit too as i was 58rdm/29nin.
Then went w. a 75rdm/37nin and saw 1 pt. getting wiped out leaving MM at 50%; again he did his drain hits and wiped us out in no time.
I won though the 3rd time w. this setup : me rdm58 75war/37nin 70mnk/35nin 64thf/32nin and 71smn/35whm.
We killed it in less than 2 minutes i think they 2hrd and the war used that thing that boosts tp.

Guardian statue:
Same setup as above + 72nin/war. No problems, the thf and i needed alot of heals for AOE, the taru smn ending up the fight w. less than 50% mp i used a lot of mp also.

Good luck all Red Mages!

Sorry i forgot in the Guardian Statue fight the 75war/37nin brought his blm to stun the statue so it wouldn't explode.

just did this in a pt or 4:

57RDM/BLM (me)
60RDM/BLM
72NIN/WAR
75RDM/BLM

miser wasnt too bad, tank hardly ever took dmg, until one time. he was at over 900 hp before i blinked. dead when i opened my eyes. no idea what happened, my chat filters were on. other then that, RDM just kited it around and nuked it to death.

statue wasnt bad either. took around 10 mins per kill (killed miser once for me, statue twice for me and other rdm). spams WS's like a mother though! he was literally getting one off every 2 or 3 melee hits on him. tank never even went in to the red.

notes: do NOT think these are easy. miser 1-shotted a 72NIN tank, and statue's AoE WS was doing all of my SS (around 220) then 100+ on top of that. miser is easy as hell if you have a good ninja or THF. one thing i found about Statue was that if you fight it in that room, mages can stand just outside the doorway and not be hit by any AoE's. perfectly safe. anyway, GL to anyoe doing this quest. fun, but dengerous. your reward more then makes up for it though

now ive got my a shiny new hat, and the new title: Paragon of Red Mage Exellence
WHM/NIN x2
# Apr 11 2006 at 5:43 PM Rating: Decent
Duo'ed with two WHM/NIN's.

Didn't debuff either monster.
(except Banish on Miser Murphy)

Endrain from ghost wasn't an issue.
We just bounced it to and from each
other as the other's shadows were all
gone.

Typhoon from doll wasn't troubling.
It knocked away 2 shadows each time.

Each battle lasted about 15 minutes each.

Is there a delay between when you can do AF quests? Like, I just got the boot from AF2. Then, I went back to San d'Oria right afterwards to try to get AF3. No dice - Curilla does not ask me to investigate. So, is there some delay between AF quests? Next Vana'diel day? After midnight JP?

This Quest Hard and Easy
# Mar 26 2006 at 10:28 PM Rating: Decent
After some in depth reading, thanks to a friend who is overly cautious, we decided to take a go at it. As this description said, Miser Murphy was QUITE obnoxious. But to be fair, we went as a 75blm (Him) and a 71 SMN (me). We couldn't take him out to say the least but we were fortunate to come across another party of level 60's so killing Miser twice was no more difficult then walking from my room to the bathroom (damn those booby traps).
After Killing Miser, our added PT members had to leave so it was just me and my friend to take on the gaurdian statue. After nearly dying two times each on Murphy, we decided to go a different way with the gaurdian statue. He switched to his 74 mnk/nin and I switched to a 61 rdm. The Gaurdian Statue went much much smoother. With the exception of a few heavy damage spells, the statue either missed or hit his shadows. I only had to use convert/divine seal and Cure IV on myself once, fortunately he had enough hate for the both of us.
At any rate, This quest was not entirely difficult, but it requires some disciplin especially for the miser.

I solo'd Miser Murphy just now with my npc lvl 50 healer and myself as 75RDM/nin, to get my AF hat again after upgrade. It was a surprisingly easy and short fight.
Just keep Flat Blade ready for any -ga spells and keep shadows up.
Sufhi, got the killing blow though. orz XDD

Edit: Just solo'd the NM doll in garlaige as well. Comparably, this was a lot harder then miser, but not a real challenge. Only gravity stuck reliably, and enspells (i tried sevreal elements) were all heavily resisted. Enthunder did around 9 :x
I also didn't have my NPC with me on this one, signal not up and tactics pearl used up.

OK, did this last night. (done Miser 4 times now, and Doll 3 times total :-s )

Miser Murphy - Yes he has En-Drain on his attacks, but its not as bad as made out to be providing you prepare for it. 70+ SMN can tank it with Fenrir. 75thf/nin can tank it. 73war/nin can tank it. Used all 3 options in recent fights against Miser. Main thing is to have at least 1 Paralyna in pty, and at least 1 Haste in pty. Keep tank hasted (or refreshed if using SMN) Dont bother with Dispel or Silence, they are as useless as a fart in a spacesuit. Simple tactic - Ensure Tank gets good hate, then open up a can of whopp *** on him. Longest fight (73war/nin, 70rdm/whm, 69rdm/blm, 53rdm/whm, 70sam/war, 75thf/nin) took about 4mins. NOTE : If more than one rdm needs, get rdm who NOT got Ancient Coin to zone out and back in, then WAIT 5 mins for Miser to repop - almost gave up 1st time thinking I screwed quest or something lol.

Guardian Statue - Harder fight. Not by a lot, but more "tactics" based than Miser. Did him 3 times in a row, with only 1 death. Pty was 75thf/nin, 73war/nin, 70rdm/whm, 69rdm/blm, 53rdm/blm. The 53rdm died to a 3rd Typhoon (AoE attack that eat my Stoneskin and did 200dmg on top)that the doll did ONE AFTER THE OTHER!! The thf and war bounced hate, and we used the local mobs to build TP between fights. Tactics are to have at least 1 Curaga II, and 2 SEPERATE healers (trust me, the dmg Statue puts out is heavy). Took a good 7-8 minutes per fight for Statue, although 2nd fight we lost the 53rdm AND got 2 Skele links, so took a bit longer as I (69rdm/blm) pulled off Statue to deal with links.
When you get Nail Puller - PLEASE remember to TRADE the Puller to the box. The Statue will spawn instantly after death if you click on the box instead of Trade.

NOTE : BOTH Miser and Statue must be done ONCE PER RDM - So plan accordingly

Needless to say, Siren has 3 new Pimped Red Mage.

To all those doing this, get yourself a good tank (pay if you have to) and 1 good damage dealer - then your set. Total time to do quest (if your doing it ONCE only) is about 1 1/2 hours from first CS to getting hat (depending on Warp/teleports)

Good luck to all RDM!
My Experience

Well I just went with a 75RDM. We died horribly. The thing drains for 300+hp. We barely scratched its health. Also notable there were 6 level 40s with us who also died valiantly... poor guys. Anyways he said his LS suggests bringing a ninja because Utsemi will block the drain. Gonna try that next. Also I noticed I had to remain in the room for a couple minutes before the thing spawned. Its not instant so just hang out for a while til it comes up. -Ptr

EDIT: 2nd Try:
59RDM
60RDM<-Me
59WHM
75PLD
75THF/NIN
75SAM

Decimated. No one got low and it was good. Other RDM got coin first. Then Murphy wasn't spawning so we went to do WHM AF. Me and the other RDM stayed behind to make murphy spawn(mistake). We had to run to the party to save them but too many had died by the time we got there. *PARTY WIPES*. THF/NIN goes home. We get Murphy again with this setup.

59RDM
60RDM<-Me
59WHM
75PLD
75SAM

This time it was closer. All mages had to heal and while no one got dangerously low it was not a cynch. I would not feel comfortable with a weaker party on this quest. -Ptr

-MORE to be added about Garlaige soon.-

I did the first part just the other night with a 74war and me 58rdm. First time we tried fighting Miser Murphy the war ended up dying. Second time war two houred and we killed it in about 10 minutes. Just did the "Doll" fight with a 75whm, 72pld, and a 71drk. Only took us about 5 minutes and the DRK only got into red once. Now I got my hat and I thank all the players that helped me.

I just finished this today and I'm so glad I got it done. I'd heard that you need 12-18 ppl to fight the NMs and I thought that I'd never be able to get enough ppl to help. Did both Miser Murphy and Guardian Doll with a four person pt including myself. Here was our setup:
Me: 58RDM/29BLM
Gael: THF/NIN
Avdi: 72PLD/36WAR
Bufazufa: BLM/WHM
Many props to those guys as they totally owned both NMs. THF/NIN and BLM/WHM where both anon but they where pretty high lvl im sure 70+. Miser Murphy didnt stand a chance against THF's shadows, his drain effect didnt help him at all, and PLD and THF duo'ed the doll, BLM nuked and healed and I healed and buffed. The doll's AoE attack hit hard, but no one dropped below 1/3 hp,\, and we were able to quickly heal up. Took us about an hour to do both, mostly running through Fei-Yin (sp) and I had to go back to San D'Oria at one point. Good luck to anyone who has to do this, I am so glad its done.

A few members from my LS just did this for a RDM member. The four of us fought both Miser and the Doll in Garlaige.

Party Set Up:
72 WHM/SMN
65 NIN/WAR
65 SAM/WAR
61 RDM/BLM

Miser Murphy
The worst part of this fight was getting to Fei'Yin. Man that's a long run! Miser was easy and we took him out relatively quickly. Had enough time for a Blade: Chi > Tachi: Jinpu > Hexastrike and then I did one more Tachi: Koki at the end for good measure.

The Garlaige Doll
This was the tougher of the two fights for us. The NIN pulled the Doll out into the hallway and the RDM stayed in the room. As you can see from the party set up, we only had one DD, so the fight was kind of long.

With that particular set up, I don't think that we could have pulled it off without a high level WHM, unless we had two 60-ish WHM's. The doll has a rather harsh AOE attack and when he starts hating on you, hit hits hard. NIN did go into the red a couple of times cuz the doll eats shadows for an appetizer and then HP for the main course. But he never died. ^^

It was a massively fun fight though. I'm not sure if you really need 12-18 60's, though I guess if you want to be super safe you could go in with 12.

Just finished the part where you fight Miser Murphy. Our setup:

75WHM/NIN
63PLD/WAR
58RDM/BLM(me)
58RDM/BLM
63SAM/???

Both myself and the other RDM LSmate needed the quest done, so we were aiming for 2 coins. First fight went great. Miser died and I got my coin. Second time we spawn him, PLD died then WHM, and the other RDM escaped us.

We try fighting this thing 2 more times, both times the PLD and WHM die first, then the SAM died on 2nd try. RDM and I escape again.

PLD has to go - work. So we try again, and fail again. -.- This time all 4 of us die. So we all get raises and align 2 more LS friends and 2 people from another to come as an alliance. Btw, both WHM and the other RDM deleveled during these runs. :(

So now we have:
75WHM/NIN
63SAM/???
58RDM/BLM
57RDM/BLM

??WHM/BLM
75WAR/NIN
57THF/NIN
58RDM/BLM
63RDM/WHM

And we own the ******* in probably less than 2 minutes with Banish III bursts and Light SC'ing. We did this one more time to get the allied RDM his coin also. All in all, it was a frustrating experience, but worth it in the end.

MAKE SURE you bring lots of friends for this fight.

ok so i thought i'd put up my little story... so it begins with a couple people from my ls's other branch agreeing to help me and a whm with our AF, seeing as how they're both in fei'yin. so we get there and run into miser murphy first. and honestly he was easy, not too easy but deffinetly not hard or a hastle. pty setup was 75PLD, 73PLD, 75NIN, 75BLM, 58WHM, 58RDM(me). so that's all over with and we head to the next ??? for the whm. and to put in short, the shadow handed us our asses. luckily i literaly got disconnected the second the NIN tank died, so when i got back everyone was dead. then of course the pty is all bummed and has to leave so that's the end of that. thought i would get my hat but no. so after a while i'm back out ptying in terrigen and the blm says he can help me with it probably tomorrow, well the pty ended quicly and so he said he'd help. so of course we head to GC and me and him are gunna duo the ******* doll 75RDM/NIN and me. our first attempt was going well got him to about 75% and out of nowhere my partner begins to disconnect. lol. so hate goes to me and i chainspell warp. he gets back on and we go back. and i must say it was REALLY REALLY fun. all i did was sit back, refreshed, hasted, regened, and the occasional enfeelbing. fight took about 10-15 minutes. and honestly he wasn't that bad. the only thing you'd have to worry about is of course that AoE of his, ripped a nice little hole in my stoneskin to say the least. but all in all i have a new found love for RDM, want to get it to 75 faster now so i can sub NIN. gl to all you other rdm's out there, and i hope you deserve you're nice new title of "Paragon of Red Mage Excellence"
Piece of cake

For this, I gathered all my friends, then went to Fei'Yin for Miser Murphy. This guy is tough. He is. really. We had 75pld/war, 72brd/rdm, 70rdm/blm, 70rdm/nin, 60rdm/blm (me), 66drk/war, 62pld/war, and a 60blm/whm. I though : "Better be the more people we can so no one will die !" First, be ready to spam Paralyna -.- and second, this guy resists Dispel ><. And DRK finally ended up eating dust. Poor Kaizen ;_; Only death so far.

After this, we went to Garlaige. Everyone told me that the Doll-type NM was "oh-so-hard-everyone-will-die". Not. We went with same setup as above, with a pld 75 and a blm 70 that joined after. We just totally pwned this. No one got got really hurt by AoE, and no one had to convert/rest/run everywhere because they needed MP.

And now, Azuu runs everywhere yelling "I got my pimp hat" (Well no. XD But I'm happy ^^)

Went after this punk with my 5/6 static today, and brought along a 63ish DRK for help. Thanks to Juh for coming along.

After having an absolute nightmare with Miser Murphy (didn't catch the note about him getting that obscene Additional effect: Drain boost, and got the party wiped the first time through), we didn't expect too much trouble with Guardian Statue. The AoE sounded scary, but the local mobs were low enough not to give us trouble.

First fight went poorly, since I popped the mob a touch too early. The MNK wasn't fully charged, and our BLM was trying to nuke it for damage. Resists were through the roof, and we didn't quite have the room we needed on that side of the door, so the mages would sometimes eat an AoE. Our WHM and BLM quickly both ran out of MP, and that was pretty much it. The MNK dropped at about 40% NM HP, and the rest of the party soon followed.

Second time around we brought Sythiel of Lost Boys fame, as SAM. Major props to Syth for rocking, even at two or three levels lower than the rest of us. This time the BLM sat back and saved his MP for debuffs, buffs, and curing. This worked out wonderfully, but when Syth popped his 2hr, the NM managed to drop two Typhoons and a Pazner-death-TP-attack-name-unremembered on the MNK. This was at around...3%, I think. We managed to finish it off by the skin of our teeth, but poor Luc.

Anyhow, this fight was definitely more painful than expected, primarily in the sense that this guy has painful magic resistance and typical NM HP stores to draw on. A BRD would have smoothed things out quite a bit.

Bottom line? Build your party/alliance for survival and support, not for damage. Excessive damage won't help you here.
Guardian Statue Semi-Soloed
# Dec 13 2005 at 1:06 AM Rating: Decent
Despite most people I talked to in the game that said it absolutely wasn't possible, a SAM74/NIN37 mithra friend of mine basically soloed the Guardian Statue with me, as RDM59/BLM29, healing and hasting. I even managed to get Gravity to stick on the Statue a few times. We pulled the Statue over to the Banishing Gate where I could stand back away from the fight to avoid the AoEs and my friend could bash away all she wanted. She didn't need any food, and I believe she was averaging about 200dmg per hit, but that is a rough estimate, since I don't exactly recall. Keeping her hasted was fairly essential, as it enabled her to keep Ustsusemi up without too many complications. I wound up using Convert once near the end of the fight where the Guardian starts going psycho, but even then it wasn't really doing much damage to my friend.
