Summary

The editor wants you to gather news articles from the reporters dispatched to each of the four districts of Windurst. In addition, he wants you to confirm the validity of the scoop reported by the reporter in Windurst Woods.

Walkthrough

Naiko-Paneiko of the Tarutaru Times (C-11) wants you to track down several reporters and get their story. They are located as follows:

Once you have spoken to all four reporters, head to the Lily Tower of the Inner Horutoto Ruins in East Sarutabaruta (J-7). Go to (G-9) and open the "Cracked Wall". Once you're through, follow the tunnels to around (G-7) or (G-8). There is a tunnel that is NOT on the map. Take that South and then West, to reach the "Mahagony Door" that you need. Examining it will confirm the news scoop and you can now return to Naiko-Paneiko to complete the quest.

Quest Series

This quest is part of a series of quests offered by Naiko-Paneiko. See the list below to find out which quest comes next.

My character Cocacola finished this quest at level 8 Rdm with no sj. Most of my skills were capped, but I was level 8. I was doing ok in the tunnels, when all of a sudden I got ambused by three gobbies. 3 gobbies are just about all Coca could take, but then a Balloon showed up. So I just started runnin! Soon the door was in sight, and I was running low on HP, and I got to the door and about 4 seconds after I confirmed the scoop I was dead. But I did it! =D

Can you go through the Mahogany Door? I wanna go in and kill the Cat Burglar or something! What's behind that door?! lol
Stolen!?
# Mar 10 2005 at 12:26 AM Rating: Decent
I've completed all of this quest as far as I know (got the crappy reward and everything) But appearently not. I have relatively high windy fame. I tried to return to Naiko-Paneiko to trade in the bronze box for the scooped quest, and for some reason it didn't work. I talked to him again thinking maybe I hadn't activated it yet... Hmm the article was STOLEN and the quest remains uncompleted! Arrrg. >< Nobody has seemed to cover this in either of the quests. (maybe I just didn't read carefully enough) I returned to the wood door and nothing happend there either. Could someone please help me out? I swear imma skin that mithra thf when I find her simply for making me run around all day >< thx. ~Aet
magic gate
# Feb 25 2005 at 2:13 AM Rating: Decent
Ok what is the magic gate of Horutoto? u find here?
wheres the cracked wall
# Jan 29 2005 at 6:45 PM Rating: Decent
there are 3 cracked walls at the beginning of Horutoto Ruins 2 on the right and 1 on the left as you walk in from j-7 east sarutabaruta. hang a right when you walk in to the main room with the ancient gizmos in it, go in one of the smaller rooms with a gizmo in it and there is a cracked wall in both of the ones to the right. if you go threw the one on the left youll see a different door and it will say it is sealed shut, turn around you went the wrong way. after going through the cracked wall go west and when you get to a point where you could go left or straight, go straight then youll find the follow the path till you see the (if you have a map the path isnt on it) mohagany door, if you went left youll go to a different door with a room full of goblins you went the wrong way, turn around and go back. after that go back and finish up by talking to naiko-paneiko.

You have to do the Glyph Hanger Quest for the Map of the Ruins.

Door
# Jan 15 2005 at 1:57 AM Rating: Decent
Mahogony door is at G-8 in the Beetle Burrow part of the Horutoto Ruins. As mentioned below, its not on the map. Confirmed that you only need to check the door, you do not have to have the Windy mission.

Just to be clear. The mahogony door is way way inside the ruin. Don't be confused just because the mahogony door is in the same square as the crack in the wall. The tunnel winds around and off the map. You will go through some 20 gobs and 10 bones before you reach it.

Hope this helps...
Help me out!
# Nov 24 2004 at 10:10 AM Rating: Decent
I'm sure that I am doing something stupid or missing something obvious, but I can't even get to G-8 in the ruins. I'm from Bastok so I don't really know anything about the place, but once I zone in and go downstairs, all I can find is a circular hallway. I have no clue what to do with the magical gizmos, and behind every cracked wall I have found I only run into another gizmo or a door thats "Firmly Shut". I spent about 30 minutes last night pretty much doing laps around the place and never got anywhere. If someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong I would greatly appreciate it!

-Edit: I found out what I was doing wrong, I went in the wrong entrance lol.

You only open the door if you are on the Windurst mission 2-1 and have the hide out key.

It's possible to confirm the presence of the Mahogany Door as long as you can take on Goblin Thugs/Weavers and Magicked Bones one-on-one.

However, you meet alternating groups (of three) of said Goblins and Bones on your path to the door. Even when practised at luring monsters to battle one-on-one, you will probably still need to take on two at a time, every so often.

The big problem for people who try it like I did (WHM, Lv.10, Solo) is the Balloon. While the other monsters check up as "Easy Prey" 99% of the time, the Balloon ranges from "Decent Challenge" to "Tough". Fortunately, it sticks to the "arc" section of path near the end, so it is possible to wait for it to take one direction and dash the other way.

Don't abandon hope if it does notice you though - just keep your HP in the white (if you can restore HP), damaging it when you can. If you get as lucky as I did, it'll selfdestruct instead of killing you.

lmao I did this quest as a 36 WHM/BLM (Teleport Quest Fame because Windurst, apparently, has no interest what so ever in listening to some sheep herder about how gold my corn is) and I rolled right through it. What was nice was I was able to collect a couple bone chips and a pinch of bomb ash which took care of Shintoto (or whoever)'s quest to get rid of the 'spy' (Taru Times reporter) that loitered around her house.
something missing?
# Jul 23 2004 at 1:51 PM Rating: Excellent
I don't know if anyone sent another correction for this, or not, but I have this...

Get to the inner ruins, through the tower at J-7.
Go to either of the west smaller square looking areas on the map.
There is a door you can open, called a cracked wall.
Go in, and either one will take you to nearly the same spot.
I found that taking the northern one allows you to get some bone chips from the magicked bones that are near there.
Then head west through the tunnels.
Then you come to a junction that leads to G-7/G-8, heading north.
Take that route.
Once you get to the farthest point, look south. There is a tunnel that is NOT on the map.
Take that south, and west, to reach the Mahagony door that you need.
Hope this helps someone, since I was really confused by the instructions here.
something missing?
# Jul 16 2006 at 5:05 AM Rating: Decent
This post was awesomely helpful, rate ^.

I also found that if you go the back way around the loop in H-8 just before you get to the area with the door you can pick up both the two Bone Chips AND the Bomb Ash you need for the Curses, Foiled Again! quest, since there's a Ballon and then 4 Magicked Bones.

I was doing this quest as a lvl 36-THF/18-NIN (since I'm from Sandy) and there's nothing in the ruins that wasn't Too Weak.

Since it gets confusing in the passageway, if you have the map of the ruins, go NO further south than the upper half of H9/I9... further down you hit lvl ~20 goblins, and in the big room at the southernmost point, you hit gobline muggers and leechers, which can get up to lvl 30.

Actually - you CAN'T enter there - first when you touch it it says:
"It looks like that Cat Burglar's hideout lies behind this door!
You were able to confirm the Windurst Woods scoop!"

then when you press the door again it says:
"The door is firmly closed"

if you return to Umumu (windurst woods i5) after this quest, she says:

"As I thoughtaru!
I won this year's Pulitzer-Bulitzer Prize for journalism with my scoop on the Cat Burglar!
And it's all thanks to you for helping confirm that it was true. I really want to thank you more, but will this do...?"

and then she gives you a Bronze Mace (Lv4 WAR/WHM/PLD Club)

[not sure if you can get this right after, cause i only just talked to her and i am like fame 8 now :P]

I returned immediately after the quest, and then later on after doing other things...
Umumu doesn't seem to offer any other sort of reward, and Allakhazam also doesn't have a Bronze Mace listed as a reward for a quest, nor Umumu listed as an NPC who offers a reward or starts any sort of quest.

I have fame 9 in Windurst.

Could you...

Could you do this quest at the same time as doing M2-1? Considering you have to go to the mahogony door anyways, wouldn't that be more convinient?

I tried finishing this part of the quest, but, went the wrong way, to the southwestern most room that looks like a square room, but, indeed, those mobs there are way past level 15, and I died trying to get there... So, I did as told above, and easily finished the quest.... by hugging the right wall, as soon as you get there... Easy to solo at level 15... Can be done at level 12 solo, except with a WHM. I wonder why?

A WHM solos just fine, as good as a monk unless you are all fat and happy from group xp.
Hiwon-Biwon hates me...
# Mar 01 2004 at 1:42 PM Rating: Decent
When I talk to Hiwon-Biwon by Shantotto's Manor he seems very scared (by the way the t-t-t-text is di-dis-displayed <---like that) and he slumps his shoulders and says :H-h-here...t-take this...." but when I look at my key items to see the scoop....nothing is there. I have talked to him over and over with the same result....no scoop. I can't finish the quest without it. So how do I actually get him to give it to me?

I did the quest Shantotto gave about cursing a peeping tom...and it turned out it was Hiwon-Biwon....so will he now not give me the scoop as revenge on me...what gives here??? Help???
RE: Hiwon-Biwon hates me...
# May 13 2004 at 10:16 PM Rating: Decent
I finished the Curses, foiled again quest before I got the scoop from him and had no problems, he was still in an awful lot of pain though.
RE: Hiwon-Biwon hates me...
# Mar 07 2004 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
It sounds like you are part way through the 'curses foiled again' quests. Try completing the second part.

Hat in Hand Quest
# Feb 24 2004 at 9:07 AM Rating: Default
Kyume-Romeh will NOT give you his scoop if you are also currently doing the 'Hat in Hand' quest for the hat shop in Windurst Waters. Since he is one of the NPCs you must speak to for that quest, he will merely compliment your hat and not give you the scoop you need to complete this quest. Either finish or abandon that quest if he won't give you his scoop.
RE: Hat in Hand Quest
# Jun 22 2004 at 11:49 AM Rating: Decent
I just did this about 20 min ago, while doing "Hat in Hand." I just had to engage him in conversation a 2nd time after he talked about my hat. The information posted here is correct.^^
RE: Hat in Hand Quest
# Feb 28 2004 at 8:38 PM Rating: Decent
Kyume-Romeh will give you the scoop if youre on hat in hand. Thats how i got it. I noticed his dialogue was different and talked to him again, and then he yelled at me for mentioning his editors name while he was eating. Just talk to him twice.
RE: Hat in Hand Quest
# Feb 27 2004 at 10:36 AM Rating: Default
I'm not sure that's true...I got the quest while doing the "Hat in Hand" quest. I think I had to talk to him a couple of times - the first time he talks about the hat, and the second time he'll talk about his reporters and such. So just talk to him a couple of times, he should give it to you.
