Description

First, a few notes about Avatar in general fights. This is not the Trial Size quest, which is the solo fight, capped at level 20 (refer to Trial Size Trial by Ice for that quest). Everyone who is involved in the fight must have a tuning fork of the correct protocrystal. There is no cap on this battle, although there is a 30-minute time limit (not that it ever seems to be important).

General level guidelines: 60+ for melee and 55+ for mages. You’ll want a Black Mage for certain and a solid tank, but the rest is relatively flexible. A well-balanced party is critical, though. You’ll likely want at least 2 of the following 3: Red Mage, White Mage and Bard. You will want one of the melee or the Bard to be able to cast Bar-a spells. Having the WHM or BLM try to cast them will be problematic. Our strategy for this was to have the RDM sub WHM and melee using the appropriate En-spell for easy Bar-a casting. Additionally, if you can buy an Enhancing Torque (usually much cheaper than corresponding Torques), that will add 2-3 points of resistance to Bar-spells. Additionally Mal-rings (from the ghost NM’s in Gusgen Mines) can be helpful for the fight. You can buff up before entering the protocrystal, so feel free to do so and rest up while still outside.

Battle strategy for all six fights is pretty much the same. The battlefield layout for all six fights is exactly the same, although the coloration scheme for the battlefield will be different. The battlefield is shaped like a long path up the side of hill, with a switchback about halfway to the top. This topographical feature allows the mages to stand above the fight (and out of easy reach of the avatar) while still being able to cast spells upon the combatants. This allows for the tank(s) to have extra time to pull hate back should the mages draw it. It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to keep the correct Bar-spell up at all times. Not doing this will result in multiple deaths when the Avatar’s 2-hour comes (at about halfway), and will likely produce a loss. Each avatar is also only easily susceptible to debuffs of the element they are weak to (i.e. Shiva can be Paralyzed). Whether they are susceptible to other enfeebles of very high level is not confirmed.

It is strongly recommended to fight each avatar on the day it is weak to (i.e. Shiva on Firesday) and even more strongly recommended NOT to fight the avatar on its day (i.e. Shiva on Iceday). Spells of each element are much stronger on their specific day of the week.

Each quest is repeatable, but only once per real life day. Once you have returned to the quest giver and gotten your reward, you have to wait 24 hours (some say midnight Japanese time) in order to get the quest again. At that point, you can get a new tuning fork. Each time you complete the quest, you can choose ONE reward from the list, which varies from avatar to avatar.

In order to get the Fenrir quest (The Moonlit Path), you have to have whispers (key items) from all six elemental avatars. This means that you can’t turn them in for reward until you have all six, at which point you can give them to the Fenrir quest giver (Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters). So, in order to be able to get Fenrir and all six avatars, you’ll need to fight each of them at least twice. Additionally, if you are a Summoner, the Evoker’s Ring is only obtainable through the Mama Mia quest in Norg, which would mean you would have to fight them each a third time.

If you can’t get any of these quests, the problem is likely fame. Each quest giver is a taru who stands next to a non-taru warrior. If you don’t have sufficient fame, the taru will just complain about being hurt a lot while his companion will discuss perseverance and not giving up. If you have sufficient fame, the Tarutaru will give you the fork. The non-taru will give you a Trial Size Tuning Fork if you have met the requirements.

TRIAL BY ICE

To obtain the Ice Avatar Shiva, first speak of Gulmama in North San D’oria, near the exit to West Ronfaure and the Watchtower. If you have sufficient fame, he will give you a tuning fork of ice (key item).

To use this, you need to travel to Fei’Yin and find the Cloister of Frost. To travel to Fei’yin by foot, you must walk through Ranguemont Pass and then travel through Beaucedine Glacier to the very north end. A map of all of these places is highly recommended, but Fei’Yin in particular. Sneak is all that is needed in Fei’Yin until you get to the very end and see Weapons.

To get to the Cloister of Frost from the Fei’Yin front door, take a right out of the first room and follow that path for awhile. Keep straight when you have a choice, and eventually you will come to stairs at G-9. Go down the stairs (check the bats at the bottom – they are a lot harder than those at the top). Take the first left you come to beyond the stairs and once you come to a room, take the NW passage. Follow that path for a bit and take the first left. You will come to a large room full of Utukkus, Golems and Bats. Follow the right wall in the room north until you come to another passageway – take it. You will walk through a couple of rooms with Spectres and you will eventually see some Weapons. Put up Invisible for these and run by them. Shortly past then you will zone into the Cloister of Frost. The Protocrystal is right inside the front door – as is the Cermet Headstone for ZM5.

Try to fight Shiva on Firesday, and do not fight her on Iceday. Keep up Barblizzara at all times, if you can.

Once you defeat her, you will acquire the Key Item: Ice Whisper. Return it to Gulmama for your reward, or hold onto it. If you have all six whispers simultaneously, you can give them to Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters to gain the Moon Bauble – which is basically the Tuning Fork of the Moon – the ability to fight Fenrir. If you are collecting items for the Evoker’s Ring, you will want the Rust ‘B’ Gone.

If you attempt the avatar fight on the day of the week that it is weak against and use the corresponding Bar- Spell, completing the fight will be much easier.
Easy

Was easy.

Diamond dust did 0 dmg.

Gear- SH, evasion torque, genbu shield, elusivex2, corse cape. Everything else AF and normal crap.

Foor- Tav Taco

get in buff up. Keep up bar spells. Although she did resist every enfeeble even dispell on Lightning day. Cap enf.+4 merits. Switched to some magic acc. gear and spider torque for it also had no luck. When she did her ice spike crap I just turned around for a couple shadow casts and it wore off.

Didn't even have to convert.

Took 22mins. Not very time effective but it wasn't hard.

Will be my first avatar I would own aside from carby. Oh and the fame thing, "You are famous in our kingdom ect.." is only rank 5 fame, you need at least rank 6 mine is 8.

For anyone interested, here is a successful setup for solo'ing Shiva Prime with WHM/NIN.

My setup/info:

Weapons: Morgenstern/Darksteel Maul
Ammo: Bibiki seashell
Head: Walhara Turban
Neck: Evasion torque
Body: Reverend Mail
Hands: Blessed Mitts
Legs: Blessed trousers
Feet: Blessed pumps
Waist: Scouter's rope
Ear: Suppanomimi/Ethereal earring
Ring: Rajas Ring/Puissance ring
Back: Cheviot cape

Items used: Jack o'Lantern, Yagudo Drinkx5, Pro-ether, Hi-potx3
Macro pieces: Used Cleric's pantaloons and pumps for Barspell, Voyager Sallet and Chivalrous chain for Hexa strike
Fought on: Firesday
Clear time: 19min
2Hr: Not used
Enfeebles: Dia II only. She resists everything else on first try so I didn't bother.
*Merits: 3 Evasion/2 Club/4 Crit%/1 Bar/ProV-ShV/

As you can see, this setup doesn't kill quick. It's about outlasting her. The first time I tried it I ran out of MP (used an Icarus wing for Hexa>Black Halo... did extra 200pts which wasn't really worth it--save medicated status for Pro-ether). When she casted sleepga, I cancelled stoneskin and waited for her to clear shadows, wake me up, got Ni back up immediately and re-applied stoneskin. If you have Skin, Ni and Bar, Diamond Dust shouldn't touch you... it's her other physical BPs that you should watch out for. Also, the second time around I used a Jack o'Lantern instead of Chiefkabob. I found that the +Evasion was more valuable than addng more ATT. Overall, keep buffs up, be patient and whittle her down to nothing. It's a lot of fun!

Bonne chance! (*^_^)b

Beat this thing with 6 people, 65 WHM (me), 65 BRD, 69 RDM, 75 BLM, 75 BST, and 66 PLD.

Our plan was to make the Beastmaster's Crab pet tank first and after it dies the paladin will take over, so we buffed up, ate food, barblizzard, reraise ect. and went in.

My friend told me he had trouble soloing it because of paralyze so I casted Barparalyna too, anyway we pulled it down a bit so the mages could move up the stairs while the BST and the PLD hit it at the bottom. When we were moving up the stairs Shiva casted Sleepga and slept everyone except me and the BST. So I cast curaga and get the hate, luckily I had blink and stoneskin up. Good thing for blink it took down her 2 first hits right away and took 1 hit with stoneskin, recasted blink and continued upstairs.

Everything was going smoothly but the BLM kept getting hate and Shiva kept running around switching hate with the blackmage ><. After a few mins of that we just said ***** it and told the Paladin (66 Taru PLD)to voke. I threw a regen on him and kept him at full HP and trying to keep Barbillzard up.

After a little less then half HP, Shiva busted her 2 HR and 1-shot our Bard from full HP. Poor little Taru never saw it coming ; ;. I Cure IV the PLD after the 2HR and the BLM gives it one last Nuke and it dies.

20 Seconds from the Record but still a fun fight.

Tip: Keep Barblizzard up at ALL times on ALL members. A Blackmage and/or SMN is a must, stay out of range of sleepga and of course her 2HR.

What am I doing wrong the taru just says "owie don't make me talk" every time I talk to him. I double checked and I do not already have them? I'm at a loss HELP! Yes I have summoner unlocked.

Windy fame =9
Sandy Fame =8
Bastok Fame =7
Jeuno fame =9
Kazham fame= 8
Norg= 6 (I have that fork)
What am I doing wrong?

I am sorry I am not a normal poster here, however I am a sponge for others thoughts. LOL....

For all of you that can not flagged this quest I had the same problem with Hero Fame in Sandy. I dont know if it worked in this order but I checked my fame at lions springs, then I talked to the Taru he kept saying Owie dont make me talk I hurt all over, then after about the 3rd time, he said Hey your that famous adventurer Glivont!!! then he told me a story. It took me about 2 hours to figure out how to get this quest flagged. I hope this works for you, this isnt proven I could of just been lucky.

So I, as a whm61/blm30 when in with my friend rdm75/nin37 ^^!
It was Iceday, and it took 12 minutes :P but we beat her. In fact, about midway she 2hr'd, and I do not think it did more than 200 to him.
She spammed Frost Armor and Heavenly Strike, and the most damage she did was with Blizzard IV that did about 400 to him.
She hit me once when I Cure III'd, and it did 0 damage, with an additional effect of 143, haha.
The quest level is off...
# Feb 16 2006 at 1:12 AM Rating: Decent
I'm only level 37 and I recieved this quest.

At first I thought it was the size trial, but the fork is one of my key items not one of the inventory items...

Just thought I'd throw that out there >.>

FAME
I was having a very similar problem as the people posted below me, so I figured I'd post to clear up the problem regarding not being able to get the quest. I found out this is due to a BAD statement from Namonutice about fame. You need level 6 fame to get this quest and most people think when you check your fame and get "You're famous in the kingdom. People having no ill words about you and do good will to the kingdom she will do the same for you or something." or something close to that. That is ONLY level 5, although it seems like he is saying you're rank 8, it's only rank 5. Rank 6 (which is the minimum you need) will say "I would venture that much the kingdom has heard your name! And your reputation sparkles. Indeed I am proud of you. And to think I first knew you when you were a new recruit!!" Once you have this rank, you can get the quest.

QUEST FOR FAME
There are three quests that are really for the best to get fame in Sandy. If you have the money (right now I'd say 100k on valefor)just buy rabbit hides (trade to Parvipon E-8) and flint stones (trade to Legata K-6). If you don't have the money and need to farm them, bat wings work great and rabbit hides. the Bat wing quest isn't that good if you have to buy them. they go between 8-12k per stack, as where rabbit hides and flint stones go for between 2500-5000.

Hope this helps....this really made me mad that I coudn't get the quest when I thought I had enough fame.

Also, a good quest is the "Only the Best" quest in Selbina. It raises Sandy, Bastok, and Jeuno fame (along with their respective sublands). Just check the regions and see who is in charge of Aragoneu, go to that nation, get endless stacks of milioncorn, and go to the old man with the sheep in Selbina. I got my mule to rank 4 in one visit (granted I had a friend there who carried some with me). You lose, like, 10gil per milion corn, so it's extremely cost effecient, and it's not to level several locations at once.

Long story short...
Did this yesterday with mnk, drg, smn, rdm, blm, pld<me>. Shiva is about 3/4 dead untill i see 3 party member's hp bars hit 0 including mine. Due to lag Diamond Dust animation went off late. She knocked me for about 1400 damage as a 66 pld with best gear at the time and i made sure to not equip jelly ring. I dont think we faught her on iceday but either way i got owned. Back to LFP again lol.

I've killed shiva yesterday with 3 members: Me (Rdm/blm 54) a friend smn/whm lvl 73 and another smn/whm lvl 71.
It was pretty easy, and was ice day too!!!
I just had to keep them refreshed, they casted 2 ifrit and send them fight shiva, shiva never attacked us, and sometimes i used Fire II on her, but i was not doing that much damage as rdm...
That was a succes! ^^
Problems w/ Tuning Forks
# Jan 02 2006 at 1:49 AM Rating: Decent
Okay I think I've read over this and someone had a similar issue, but there was no resolution posted.
I have hero fame in Sandy. And I cannot get the tuning fork for Shiva. I don't have it already. I've never touched the quest before now. Is there something else that I have to activate. Or something that I need to finish first? I have the quest started for Fenrir but obviously I can't continue til I have beaten all the Avatars at least once. Anyone?

I just want to clarify, so what the guide says, does it mean that you can fight her multiple times? I'm curious because I want to get the Ice Ring for my blm and if I can't repeat the fight more than once, I don't want to miss out on having Shiva as an avatar for my summoner. Please answer my question, thanks.

did this tonite with some LS friends. 72 nin 70 sam 67 rdm 60 rdm(me). keep haste on nin and barblizzara up(i subbed whm for that). no problems. the 2 rdm stayed back so her sleepga didnt sleep all of us and we stayed outa her 2hr range. it was a little longer than a full pty of 65-70+ but you get 30 min....so why not use it. it took us about 11 min to beat her down.btw paralyze was the only enfebb that stuck...and i think dark SC healed her.

I've been battling the lvl 20 Titan Ramuh and Shiva for almost 3 mounths now (yes i really suck) mostly i do them once every 2 weeks, or whenever i'm bored. I got to 60whm and got Garuda with party. My problem is that when i try to pick up the key item forks for Titan, Ramuh and Shiva's 60 prime fights, the little taru dudes ignore me.
Questions:
~Once you pick up the lvl 20 mini forks, are you unable to collect the lvl 60 key item fork?
~Is there a way to trade in the mini forks for the key item forks?
~Do the lvl 60 prime fights need more fame then the lvl 20?
Here's the stupid question:
~Are you allowed into the lvl 60 prime battle field without the key item?

You should be able to do both at the same time. I'm guessing that the reason you cannot get the Taru to give you a regular tuning for is because you dont have enough fame? You need at least level 6 fame (4 in Norg) for the Taru to give you the regular fork to fight the avatar with a party. Mini forks only require about level 3-4 fame.

And as far as getting in without the key item goes... yes, and no. You CAN enter the battlefield without the regular "Tuning Fork of ___" item just by examining the crystal, however all that gets you is a fight SOLO against the lvl 60+ Prime Avatar. (Not good). So for the party battles, yes, every member of the party must have a tuning fork.

Hope that helped ^^ Good luck!

in reference to sleepga, would poison potion or something work for this or does she have some kind of special sleepga? May sound like a stupid question, but i'm just asking. Wow, not getting it at 60WHM...... got mine at 52WAR, the fork that is, I missed out on a chance cause of work, but LS is gonna do it again soon. For the 60WHM, it prolly has a lot to do with the fame, cause i have hero fame in sandy and got the fork at 52.

Ok when you do these fights, do NOT go in without a whm to cast barblizzara. I was the only one that died, and I got raised so that I would be able to get her but her 2hr really nuked the party hard.

But that's not the worst part. The worst part hands-down is that she SPAMS sleepga. The entire party was asleep for the majority of the fight, and several people had to 2hr to get her down [when they weren't asleep]. Hyakusa the 75 sam/nin basically soloed her, and he's incredible.

Anyway finished, but definitely have a whm and preferably a backup whm that stands way back to cure people out of sleep.

Oh yes and as a 60 drk my stun was resisted every time. If you're a melee, try to be higher, like 65-70, before doing these fights.
