Battle Notes

To begin, trade 50 Beastmen Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno in order to obtain the Rare/Ex item Comet Orb. Upon receiving the orb, make your way to the Balga's Dais zone located in the Giddeus dungeon.

Be advised that only three players can enter the battlefield, that their levels will be capped at level 50, and that there is a 30 minute time limit that starts the moment the orb trader enters the battlefield.

Upon entering the battlefield, you will find three treasure chests (Large Box, Medium Box, and Small Box) in the center of the room. When one chest is opened, the other two will disappear.

  • There is a 33% chance that you will choose a chest that, when opened, will result in completing the bcnm, and your party will receive the treasure pool from the chest.

  • There is a 66% chance that the chest you open will transform into a Mimic, and in order to complete the bcnm, the mimic will have to be defeated.

Strategies

The most common strategy in doing this BCNM is to utilize the roulette method, which is basically just to choose one chest and hope that luck is on your side, since popping the right chest will result in an instant win. If a mimic is spawned, the player will either try escaping using a Warp Cudgel, a Scroll: Instant Warp, or the Warp I spell, or, if using the method of going in on a level one job, just dying.

However, it is possible to beat the BCNM with a small group via killing the mimic spawned if the "lucky" chest isn't opened. However, this often requires planning and preparation ahead of time to win, as the group must go in with every intention of defeating a mimic should they fail to open the "lucky" chest.

Red Mage and Ninja method

A simple, straightforward method, though easily the longest one used, the Ninja will fight the mimic while the Red Mage cures and buffs the Ninja, while helping to enfeeble the mimic. The mimic's Death Trap ability as well as its Draw-in effect will often result in the Red Mage being hit a few times, so it is advised to keep Stoneskin, Blink, and Phalanx up as much as possible to survive.

Black Mage method

This method basically culminates a full contingent of Black Mages casting the Freeze Ancient Magic on the mimic soon after it spawns.

I got it on my first try.

I exploited something I shouldn't of. =o Whoops.

Got crappy drops for 50 seals.

Slayers Ring - 1k
Chunk of Gold Ore- 6k
1k in gil

I'm so doing this more because it's so ridiculously easy.

Why would anyone do this BCNM instead of 40? It sounds like it's a hell of a lot riskier, hardly anyone knows what to expect, you don't make nearly as much money, and to top it off, you end up wasting an extra 10 beastmen's seals.
Pointless

Tried it tonight, me and my friend, he got his thief I got my monk, thief level 61, monk level 30, first one was a mimic, I voked and died while he warped, 2nd one I chose right and got 8k on -.-, 3rd we both warped, I have a sure way to choose the right one, run in and get next to the chests, turn right, get on the left side of the chests, if you see a light, it's a mimic, if you don't see a light, it's the chest, light by the top of the chest shining, it has worked out for me 2 times, we would have gotten items the 3rd time but he got greedy >.> and wanted the big chest
I won

I did it correctly (large) dropped Raise II and a Drake Ring =)
Are there any ways to defeat mimic?
# Aug 01 2004 at 12:16 AM Rating: Decent
Does anyone know how to defeat the mimic other than taking a guess on the treasure? I hope this is not the only way.
Someone I partied before said he did BCNM50 real quick and easy...so me(WHM), a pld/war, a drk/war, and war/nin stupidly decided to try one out with only 4 of us. o.O
We all have no experience ofcourse...so obviously we failed. I still have my orb and afraid to use it since then. lol!

The mimic attacked so fast...we couldn't even do anything. I don't remember what it cast on me. Whatever it was..I couldn't heal and was the first to die. The battle was..haha...horrible! Maybe lasted couple seconds!

So I really hope someone with exp can give me some tip here. Do we need stun...sleep..or any spells on the mimic? How 'bout the party setup? ^^

Okay, I did this with my party when we were level 51 in an attempt to get the WHM in our static the Raise II scroll, which was going up in price dramatically.

We all died the first time not knowing what to expect, and it was a very very close fight. Second time we won, no real problems at all, two 2hrs used but only one was necessary. Party set-up was the following:

Galka War/Mnk (using Great Axe) -> me <-
Elvaan Sam/Thf
Elvaan Drg/Rdm (for back-up healing breath)
Elvaan Whm/Rdm
Elvaan Rdm/Blm
Hume Blm/Rdm

There are three main things to contend with in dealing with the Mimic. For one, he likes to frequently spam an ability called "Death Trap", which has him burrow in the ground and do damage all around him and Stun everyone. You can expect to be stunned tons before this battle is over. Second, he spits a poison that I think was Line of Effect, but was fairly potent for the level, I believe taking off 10 HP per tick. And third, to ensure Death Trap screws up as many people as possible, he'll draw people in frequently if you're not close to him.

Given the choice to Dia or Bio this sucker, I'd give it Dia, because you need to kill him fast as possible. This is not an endurance match... the Mimic does not need TP to do Death Trap so you can expect that the longer you're in, the longer this will cut your overall survival. His regular hits do some damage, but it's not dangerously more than something you'd exp off at that level, it's his constant abilities and poison you need to deal with. From what I remember, it can cause other status effects, probably with death trap, but I don't recall them coming into play overall.

I'd recommend having a war/mnk or pld/war type of tank for this fight, because while blink-tanking will help for a few hits, his constant spams and attacks may make this too difficult to keep blink up. And hate will volley around unless your tank has a lot of hate tools.
The BLM got resisted quite a bit (unfortunately you're a level short of ice staff), managed to do some pretty good damage with I believe waterga II. Mostly he just did what a blm can do, spit out a bunch of spells when he didn't stun.
SAM meikyo shisui'd for significant damage with the BLM bursting throughout, and this made for the most damage overall.
DRG attacked as normal and used the wyvern for back-up Heal Breaths during problematic times.
RDM stuck debuffs, which were very important. Anything to slow down the constant, wild nature of the Mimic's attacks is important. I'm sure he resisted some but things stuck too. The rest of the time he was back-up healing.
WHM did her best to heal, the main problem being that she'd constantly be stunned, and beyond HP dropping from regular hits and constant death traps, the poison pretty quickly ate away at people.
WAR (me) started the fight off and used continual provokes and boosts to keep hate. Eventually I'd Mighty Strikes + Sturmwind him for some decent damage and a chain with the Samurai, but most of the time I was just having to use my tools to keep hate through constantly being stunned.

Ultimately I cannot stress enough that you have to be ready to be constantly interrupted through mass stuns and draw-ins. This may be one of the few bcnms where DOT isn't as pertinent as hitting hard when you can, perhaps making THFs especially valuable. Have a tank who can hold hate in sticky situations, people who can do good damage in short bursts of time, and at least two people who can heal depending on who's available. Remember that 2hrs will be important, but short burst ones like Eagle Eye Shot and Meikyo Shisui are more valuable than say, Hundred Fists, which you'd be stunned out of before you can make use of it.

If the theory is true that the small box means high evasion low HP, large box is high HP low evasion, I'd recommend picking the medium box like we do. High evasion and High HP are both detrements to taking this thing down fast as possible.

Oh and our wicked amazing drops? A little money, a slayer's ring, and a scroll of Freeze. We were under the impression that beating the box meant you got more than the two drops of opening the correct one. Hah, how wrong we were.

WHM ended up just buying Raise II. Fun experience, but ultimately pointless.

Has anyone actually fought these mimics before? I'm not about to go waste 50 beastmen seals for a --chance-- of gil. What party configurations work well? Is it possible? 3 people or 6 people?

Idea?!

Hmm....I've had a brain-storm (Broke WHM, will think for gil)...andddd...there's a rather interesting way to turn this into a 100% success ratio, if you're willing to share of course.

Get three people (if you all have a Comit Orb, hey, all the better, and as with every BCNM, use people you know and trust), then all three choose a chest at the same time!

Advantages:
I've noticed that usually in parties, items/loot drops more...could this be true with BCNM's?

Disadvantages:
If my advantage is wrong...and you get one item valued at 5k or less....ouchy. >.< But still...that's SOME money, where there might have been none!

Basically, it's just like TaviaKeethan said.
Only instead of a single person, three at a time go. Now if EVERYONE had a Comit Orb, imagine the possiblities for this! 6 people x 100% success ratio has GOT to add up for some rather nice gil, any way you cut it! :D
And if my advantage is right, you'll also get more items since you're in a party! ^^

Nevermind...I just realised something...as SOON as you choose the wrong box, the other two vanish instantly. >.<
So there's no way around the 1/3 rule...

On another note...DOU..I was unlucky and chose the wrong box... ;_;

Not a good day for me..

Just guessed the right chest.. I got 1146 gil, Fencers Ring, and Raise II. I notice Raise II isn't on the list.

Works out to a nice 65k on the Siren Server. Woohoo!
Strategy suggestion
# May 24 2004 at 12:50 AM Rating: Default
Okay, here's what I'd suggest.
1. Get a group of low-level jobs together (the more the merrier), people you trust. I plan on doing this with my LS. Make sure everyone has a comet orb. Have a higher-level character escort the low levels to the circle.
*Important! Make sure the low levels are NOT in a party. They must all be solo.*

2. First player trades their orb to the circle, and teleports.
3. Pick a chest. Either you get the drops, happy day; or you get a mimic and you die. Since you're using low-level jobs, big deal.

4. Each member of the group repeats steps 2 and three, either getting the chest, or dying. Here's where the large number of people is a good thing. Your chance of getting drops this way greatly increases.

5. Once you're done, sell the items and split the gil evenly. Or, alternately, use some other sort of pre-agreed-on form of divying up profits so that the people who chose mimics (2/3 of the group, on average) haven't wasted their 50 seals.

when you have fought the BCNM, are you suposed to still have the "Comet Orb"?

Can you use it over again?(I honestly don't think so, but I wish I could)

that was all...

I tried to do it solo (BST lvl 1, just some job, so i didn't lose any exp). A WHM36 helped me to get to the "Burning Circle"... It was easy to get to "Balgas dias". Sneak and invis didn't work, guess I was too low lvl! But we just walked there, the WHM slayed the enemies easely... there was really few yagodus there too, I think someone was farming them.

I got to "Balgas Dias" and entered the "Burning Circle" alone (the WHM was olny there to help me live through the trip). In the arena there are 3 chests (I'm telling this to the people who don't allready know). The chests are "small chest", "Medium Chest" and "Big Chest". within one of these chest, lies the items that the BCNM drops... the 2 others are mimics(chests that looks like a Chests, but really is a monsters!).

I tried to attack the "small Chest" and what do you know... it was a mimic! \(T-T;)/
This is just my luck!

I though i had a good chance at getting the right chest since the chance of getting the right chest is 1/3
But still, there is 2/3 of getting the mimic!

so, at the end, this was just a waste of many "Beastman's seal". I used 50 "Bestman's seal" at this one... It is worth it, IF you get the right chest! But for me... this really was a pain... (-_-#)

I wouldn't recomend any people to do what i did, unless if you are lady luck or just someone who really got alot of luck (unlike me).

since I'm a THF i haven't tried to do any BCNM (THF is not really handy at BCNM... I really wish thay was!), but now I have kinda fought one! =P (the mimic did 1 hit at 400 dmg so of course, I died! (^-^;) )

good luck to anyone who's gonna try to do this.

I'll try to get the pics online (i think the qualety on the pics is really crappy!), so you all can take a look at the arena and the mimic!

I went there as lvl 10 monk with my lvl 9 monk friend and escort from a 30+ blm/whm.

My friend got a Kampfer Ring (3000 gil) and I got a Fencer's Ring (23000 gil) and a Platinum Ingot (43000 gil)

so I got 75k and my friend 3k, both of us choosed the right chest. I took medium and he took large.

we shared the money so about 40k each

I got a Mahogany Log from it (along with a Guardian Ring). This is a rather easy way to solo the enemy and take all the spoils to yourself, but if you fail it's a waste of 50 seals: Get the orb, get a lvl 1 job and someone to escort you there. Attack a chest. You have a 1 and 3 shot of getting the right one and the loot. Try it.

I don't think this drops a Raise 3 scroll.. it drops a Raise 2 scroll.
