I'm very pleased with the result though..
I went the 1st try as thf47/blm20 for perfect dodge and warp, tryed the small chest, popped a mimic.It hit me once for 153, and then my PD went up, and i warped out.
Second try, thf47/nin23, with a warp scroll. go in, and try the medium chest.
Holy crap OMG Sorcerer's Ring!! and some log... I'm a small mithra..fyi,and didnt have any "luck" items..the ring sells for around 1.2 mil on Shiva server.

Battle NotesTo begin, trade 50 Beastmen Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno in order to obtain the Rare/Ex item Comet Orb. Upon receiving the orb, make your way to the Balga's Dais zone located in the Giddeus dungeon. Be advised that only three players can enter the battlefield, that their levels will be capped at level 50, and that there is a 30 minute time limit that starts the moment the orb trader enters the battlefield. Upon entering the battlefield, you will find three treasure chests (Large Box, Medium Box, and Small Box) in the center of the room. When one chest is opened, the other two will disappear.
StrategiesThe most common strategy in doing this BCNM is to utilize the roulette method, which is basically just to choose one chest and hope that luck is on your side, since popping the right chest will result in an instant win. If a mimic is spawned, the player will either try escaping using a Warp Cudgel, a Scroll: Instant Warp, or the Warp I spell, or, if using the method of going in on a level one job, just dying. However, it is possible to beat the BCNM with a small group via killing the mimic spawned if the "lucky" chest isn't opened. However, this often requires planning and preparation ahead of time to win, as the group must go in with every intention of defeating a mimic should they fail to open the "lucky" chest. Red Mage and Ninja method A simple, straightforward method, though easily the longest one used, the Ninja will fight the mimic while the Red Mage cures and buffs the Ninja, while helping to enfeeble the mimic. The mimic's Death Trap ability as well as its Draw-in effect will often result in the Red Mage being hit a few times, so it is advised to keep Stoneskin, Blink, and Phalanx up as much as possible to survive. Black Mage method This method basically culminates a full contingent of Black Mages casting the Freeze Ancient Magic on the mimic soon after it spawns. Easiest way of making sure u dont die in this bcnm if ur soloing, is to go in as a rdm/blm that is at least lvl 34. I just put up stoneskin, blink, protect.. and if i pick the wrong one.. Chainspell + warp macro saves me every time ^^

I camp and farm this area frequently, and had a couple stacks of seals so I figured why not give the BCNM a go.
Went in as 51DRG/25SAM with a couple friends, WHM/BLM and SMN/WHM.
Tried this BCNM 3 times today. Tried different pt combinations, got wiped out each time. So far me and my team are 0/3 on this. The boxes pull you in, even with using Super Jump and letting Wyvern hit. Got pulled in, stunned and killed. Same happened to SMN.
Tried it later solo, got the drop. What luck.

For those that actually plan to fight if they choose wrong box... LS did 5 runs on this, lost all 5 but, the size of the box effects the fight. The small box hits are weak but, has high evasion. The large box hits very hard but, evasion is low. Leaving the middle box to be balance between attack and evasion. Now if we knew this to begin with, might have actually got one win. /:

I see a lot of people saying they get Astral Rings and such, but as anyone tried to fight the mimics? What would be a good party set up?

I need a Sorcerer's Ring for my BLM and the other BCNM50 that drops it doesn't seem all that fun so I'm looking to this one. But I'm not spending 50 seals to MAYBE get the right chest and MAYBE get a ring. Not logical. So I plan on bringing some friends to attempt to kill these things. But everyone else seems to want to depend on luck? I don't understand, the odds are way, way against you.

It looks to me like you should go in there prepared to fight the mimic. From what one or two posters have said, it gives good drops. Also from playing previous FF games, a mimic is a treasure chest that attacks you, with treasure IN IT.
Too bad people just give up and die or warp out if they get a mimic. It seems like someone starts a precedent, and everyone that looks it up on alla does the same.
I also think part of it, is people don't want to share the drops, or they see it as an oppurtunity to not have to share the drops.
Think INSIDE the box. Kill the mimic. That is what I am going to do. I will post results. Got 9 more levels before I can do it, though.

HAHAHA! Done this thing 2wice, first time i failed! 2nd time i got a Slayer's Ring and an Astral Ring! w00t! I totally recommend doing this BCNM whenever you accumulate 50 Beastmen seals..You're bored one day, hell i think i'll go do a BCNM 50 real quick! You can possibly get an ASTRAL RING! No sharing, no waiting for LS, or shouts in Jeuno! Completely, totally, 100% all yours.

I decided to try this solo for fun with my ninja since I dont like how long it takes to organize a BCNM run sometimes. I picked the middle box and got an Astral Ring and a Platinum Ring. 1/1 :) I made about 1 million gil in about 10 minutes of my time.

my first time trying I got scroll of Quake and a Drake Ring
I'm thinking about getting a Comet Orb to do this BCNM for, you guessed it, an Astral Ring! But i don't intend on risking it by myself, and plan on having help to fight the Mimic if he spawns. Here's my question..Based on anyones experience with fighting Mimics, could a DRK/BLM PLD/WHM and THF/NIN have a good shot at whooping this SOB?
I wonder what would happen if you used an AoE ability/spell on all of the chests, or if it would even hit them all for that matter. *Random thought.*
If it did, it would prolly either: Count as a win(Highly unlikely, knowing SE.) or do something drastic like uh, I dunno, spawn a mimic? Or nothing if you *must* physically attack one of the chests to check it.
Just a speculation, test at your own risk.

I chose the right one 4 times in a row somehow. About time i had some luck. Im now 4/5 now. The first one i got a ring worth 1.8mil. Rest of them were around 80-90k.

well i finally got it on my 3rd try got ram horn n sorceres ring which is worth 1.6-2 mil on quetzlecoat server as of today july 8th 2006
its not the size i tried tiwce so far n omw to do 3rd first i try medium mimic die n delvl to 51 :( second i try large this time im gonna pick small i guess wish me luck
I decided today, that to clear up some MH space, I'd use up my beasmens seals. I had nearly 300 (7 more till another full 50 ;;). I picked up a comet orb, changed to my NIN, and headed off to Balga's Dias.
First try, Medium, Died.
Second, Small, Died.
Now, from that I deduced that, if you follow the Small > Medium > Large theory, that the first time, It had to have been the large or the small. However, had it been the large that time, it couldn't POSSIBLY have made the small the wrong one next time. Therefore, on my third try, it should be the large.
I smacked the crate. Nothing happened. Perplexed, I re-targeted; It was an armory crate! I opened the crate.
10 seconds later, I awoke people at 6:30 AM to cries of "YA DANCER! YOU ABSOLUTE DANCER!" as my rewards were as follows.
1637 gil.

Last I checked, those were 2 mil ; ; Not checked recently, so not sure on the price now. However, I'm going to use my last set of 100 beast seals, and see if the above theory works.

Edit1: Astrals are 1.3Mil. 700k less than before, but, hey, not too shabby.
Edit2: Just did it again, Small box worked. Gussing S>M>L theory is dead on. Tamer's Ring and Petrified Log ; ;
Edit3: Did it again. Medium did NOT work, so, either someone else disrupted the cycle, or the S>M>L theory is wrong. I'm in favour of the latter, and I was probably just very lucky.

Well I failed, 50 seals down the drain.
I'm probably going to do it again though, those 15 seconds were pretty fun.
Edit: Just did it again with my THF friend. Mythril Ore drops from this as well, we got that and a Soldier's Ring ><

Did this today for the first time. I took my lvl 22 Thf/Nin. Nin for cheap invisiblity to get to the circle and Thf for Perfect Dodge for when I picked the wrong one.
I go in, do the camara glitch to look inside each box, they all looked the same. So I just picked the middle one even though my character is tall. I figure it's completly random.

50 seals wasted, oh well, at least it was faster than the last BCNM I tried and failed on.

I went and did this today just to see if I could pull in some extra cash...I went in as LVL64 (being capped would be 50 of course) Elvaan Medium Warrior and Picked the Large Box & SUCCESSS!
