Just did this quest and had the ghost spawn 5min into the boat ride at 20:00.
So if you are wondering about the timing I would assume it will pop 20:00 - 4:00 like all other undead Mobs.

SummaryThe trick box you brought back to Norg has been identified as a fake. Your assistance is required in finding the real box. Start your search by pressing Ensetsu in Bastok for more information. WalkthroughNote: You must have completed the quest 20 in Pirate Years - NIN AF1 before you can get this quest. First, buy or farm an Oak Pole, which you will need to complete this quest. Head to H-8 in Norg and speak with Ryoma. He will tell you to find Ensetsu in Bastok. Travel to I-5 in Port Bastok to find Ensetsu, who will tell you about Leodarion, who resides in Rabao. Head to Rabao and find Leodarion. He will ask you for the Oak Pole. Give it to him, and then wait until the next Vanadiel day before you speak to him again. He will give you a key item Seance Staff and tell you to head to Mhaura. In Mhaura, catch the boat at midnight. Once you have departed, head onto the deck and a NM Ghost named Enagakure will be there. Defeat it and Leodarion will meet you when the ship docks, giving you your Ninja Hakama. I decided to do this as a 75WHM/37NIN. Was told it wouldnt be hard with that setup, just hoping the Sea Horror wouldnt be there, anyway ferry leaves (I was the only one on board) Open the door to the deck and Bam! Sea Horror right outside facing me and agros me straight away, am thinking dammit now I need to wait another day, anyway after a 5 min battle I defeat the Horror run to the NM Spirit and take him down in 1-2 mins, killed both with still 5 mins to spare! I couldnt believe it! Anyway hope that helps if someones wondering! :)
Don't think this has been mentioned, but you don't need to be alive when the ship docks to complete the quest. So if Sea Horror is up, just zerg this NM before you get tentacle-raped.
I just fought it on my 75SAM (2HR > Y > G > K, light didnt even go off), and soon as I killed it, the pirates attacked, and Blackbeard popped. Took me down with 2 ThundergaII. (On the bright side, I managed to MPK all the fish botters on board!)

I just took this down as 75WAR/NIN. Wasn't even fully geared.
When it did get past my shadows it was hitting for 118ish per hit. Pretty slow though so you have time to recast.

Decided to grab this for my ninja, now at lvl 50.
Went as Pld/Rdm, so-so gear setup. Used a RR item, Protect IV, Shell III, Stoneskin. Waited for zone from dock departure, ran up on deck and there sat the NM. Threw up Phalanx, Blaze Spikes and Enblizzard. Flash, Bio II, Slow, Paralyze, Blind. All enfeebles stuck 1st try. Managed to get my TP to 100% once, hit Vorpal Blade for 500. It was over before I knew it. It never got through the initial Stoneskin. {Too Weak}
Of course, no sooner did I defeat it, then Sea Horror pops behind me. :D Been waiting for revenge on this guy. Changed Enblizzard to Enthunder, same debuffs, used Invincible when it 2 hr'd me with Hundred Fists. Went down inside of one minute. Horror was tougher than the AF NM. :p
Zoned into Selbina, got CS and the AF. Ship launched at 22:00 game time, so doesn't need to be exact game midnight.

Some nin in our shell wanted a hand for this, telling us how hard it was. So me and a friend (75War/Nin = me, 75 Sam/rng = friend) figured we'd go try it out. I voked hit him for maybe 400 dmg then friend Sidewinder and it was dead. lol......overkill.
Resting MP after buffing up on DRG/RDM, heard a BLU killing a ghost on deck.
Find the NM at 10% while Cannonball was being casted.
Cursed my luck, but found that the ghost respawned.
Not a problem was had.

If you dock in Selbina with a full inventory after killing the NM, you will not be able to receive your armor. However, you do not need to refight the NM - zone out of Selbina to Valkurm and zone right back in after clearing your inventory - the CS will start again and you will get your Hakama.

Jus killed it awhile ago. Im 67 SAM so i soloed it. Subbing ninja is sorta ok since STONE III was diverted at start of fight while i kited him down, but i only casted Ichi once, you would wanna kill it asap so don't bother with recasting (i had enough HP so u plan your own). Guide is to kill it asap, u never know what he's gonna cast, especially when totally alone on boat. It has 1731 HP if i am correct but for sure around 1700-2000

Ghost was stable all the time, didn't Quake, only did Sleep, Stun, Dark Sphere, and somthing like Stoneskin, a really powerful DEF buff. Critical hits did 150 or so on me, so it did hurt, I was down to 350 HP in red after fight. Fight was like 2-3 mins.

A Good Party's Formation is based on the Balance of two very major principles of Defence & Offence -, and the ability to sustain a proper consumption of HP and MP during each fight - Play hard and play smart; "Noobs" deserve patience, and respect like all others, only cocky/rude/inconsiderate players don't.

did this fight yesterday as a 51 nin/thf. It was pretty easy. I used a silent oil, clicked on the ??? and the nm's spawned. I moved to an area that wouldn't get me aggroed by anything else. I ranged attacked one spider to pull it away, I used enfeeble spells (blind didn't work the first time) but I kept my shadows up and used my elemental Ni spell wheel (katon--->suiton---->raiton---> doton--->huton--->hyoton, repeat). By the time I killed one spider, the other had despawned. I used another silent oil, ran to ??? and got the trick box.
I wasn't using any food or medicines, but I did have alot of eva (emp. hairpin, dodge earring X2, torque, shinobi haka +1) and the evasion bonus from thf. Also, my magic skill was capped. Just wanted to add a post from someone who wasn't using a 60+ for this quest or for those who are thinking about soloing this. lol posted this in wrong section, anyways. Just tried to solo the ghost engakure.
1st time: I solo'd without any food or medicine. This was a tough fight. I had to really pay attention to my shadows and casting, and I went through the elemental wheel over and over again. Only got nm down to a little over a 1/4 of its life, then he whooped me and it was game over lol. I was relieved however because even though I died, I knew that it could be done with either a healer in the party or another nin/melee.
2nd time: I invited a 59 rdm to join (thx Elto). He casted protect and shell on me and haste, and the battle went alot smoother. He wasn't casting any nukes on it, which was cool. He kept his stoneskin and blink up and cured me once in a while.
This is definitely a fight that you will need either a healer for, higher level help, or some hp regen and eva food. With either of those you could handle this fight as a 51 nin/thf. (I didn't try it with the food, but i'm assuming that a ninja who goes at this prepared and is used to soloing IT mobs will be able to do it if they really have the urge to try and solo this [you cannot solo this if you aren't good at timing your shadows because this ghost hits pretty hard and has a move that bypasses shadows])

I went there thinking that Sea Horror pops are somewhat rare so I opened door and ran out to grab my ghost NM...BAM...that fish/octopus was right there in my face. Needless to say, I got him down to 50% and died from his Hundred Fist....so instead of taking 2.5 hours for my AF I ended up spending 4 hours.<end rant>

got my af2 pants and was an easy fight but a higher lvl war was helping me

my 51 nin buddy needed this NM. So me a 75Rdm/Nin helped him own it. Was a 2 min fight with no problems just plain owned. My nin buddy was stoked. So I see in the chat log Sea Horror owned someone. Awsome ill get Sea Horror also i though. 10 min fight and yep owned him also (too weak). Man I love my job ^^

I helped my friend out with this a while back. The Sea Horror was up but they didn't notice and proceeded out the door to get the NM ghost. It was almost bad but the whm and I took turns getting smacked from sea horror.The NM ghost was not hard at all, I come out of door as they got aggro from sea horror and cast my biggest tier on the ghost and bam almost dead.Our NM pt was whm 70+ , me 62 at the time, 52 nin, 52 blm, and 63 brd. We won against the Sea Horror yay!! Fear I do not of that nasty Sea Horror (well maybe if I'm alone /panic)
a note to you speed demons. You MUST zone upon completing AF1 or he wont give you this one.
The NM will spawn, as long as you ride the boat from Mharua to Selbina during the night. 74Mnk/37nin Downed him before Hundred Fists wore. Further note he didnt even eat through Utsusemi:Ni
Yes, very easy for THF75/NIN37. Mob was up as soon as we left Mhuara docks at 0:00. Shortly after engaging, Sea Horror popped and aggroed, so I tanked both <.<. After ghost went down I made work on the Horror, got hit once the whole time and that was during Hundred Fists. Got Monsoon Kyahan too :D Too bad pirates didn't come, that woulda been fun...

Did this yesterday soloed with SAM Lv.67 I subbed WAR. Waiting for the boat to get there and to dock was harder then the fight. I of course simply Meditated and then two houred a few Gekko's and it was gone. The Spider of the AF1 was harder then this mob.
I know a 60+ DD can own this mob.. so it would be a safe bet saying 55(ish) can and live. The first time I did this the NIN was just lvl 52 and it looked to me he could have soloed it. Like I said.. easier NM then the spider for AF1.

Well I just did this and when i got off the ship my inventory was full and it said sort and try again...Can I go find this guy some where else and get it or do i hae to wait another hour to repeat it?

I ended up having to repeat the NM fight so make sure you don't have a full inventory...

Just helped someone on the ship with this. Lvl 52Nin/war and 68Whm/blm.
Nin tanked while I cure bombed. It got through his shadows once or twice but didn't break a sweat at all. 18 exp for the kill and netted me lvl 69 ;)
Poor Nin d/c'd before the ferry landed though, hope he doesn't have to fight it again X_x

Not sure how you accomplished the quest @lv50 when for everyone else you must be lv51.. otherwise he tells you to get out of his face.. Say what you want. But I tried multiple times as lv50 and never obtained quest.. obtained lv51 and talked to NPC and got quest no problem...

no i obtained it at 50, you must zone to obtain it after completing the previous ones.
I have nothing much to add to what has already been said, just my experience of this. I can the first night boat from Mhaura, was gonna try and solo (RNG63/NIN31) this but my friend (RNG71/NIN35) offered to join me. It was on deck straight away and another party was there for it too. I Shadowbind to get the claim, then asked the other party if they wanted an alliance. In the time it took for the other party to reply and form alliance, this thing had died.
2x Barrage, a couple ranged attacks a Slug Shot and Sidewinder and he was gone.

i am 50 nin, but ryoma just tells me "get outta my face..." why. i finished af1 yesturday
Solo'd it as a 60 rdm/nin. close fight and time almost ran out. keep your buffs up and it can be slept for convert. got 43xp for it and he had me down to the red in hp and about 21 mp left. his average hits were 150 but if you are buffed up well then it wont matter. it will take at least half of the boat ride so save some mp for nukes. also make sure everyone who is wtching stays back because it do grave reel, an hp drain, from all who is near it.

ok, i tried this as 75rng/33blm(warp to go home :), and when i got on there, ran up, shadowbind him, barraged for 1098 then slugged him for 1108 and he was dead, this thing is stupid easy probably only has 2k hp at the most

This was duo'ed by myself (63rdm/31blm at the time) and my bf 50nin/25war.
I pulled with Elemental Seal + Silence, which stuck and for quite awhile (only had to recast twice with no ES those times, stuck perfectly). I was smacked a bit at first (90-100 hp each) because I was more concerned with claiming him than I was with buffing. A quick provoke from my bf was all it took, I was able to stoneskin myself, blind, paralyze, slow, gravity and grabbed hate back while he swiped at the ghost. Pro4, shell and hasted us both, enfired myself.
We swapped hate back and forth, I kept up blink and it wasn't able to break through stoneskin the entire time. The ghost was dead in about two minutes and with the death brought cheers and congratulations from the rest of the boats passengers.

I haven't done this quest myself, but judging from the umpteen times someone asked this same question, I would assume that it is okay to do the fight as any job.

The information on this page is wrong. An Oak Pole is a lvl 40 stave. Not a level 39 stave. The lvl 39 stave is an Oak Staff. Would kinda suck if someone bought the wrong item =/

So say if sandy owned norg place then norg place AH would be linked to sandys. same with any other region like Khazam and the other place you were talking about.

This thing was stupid easy for me as my 62 sam. I brought some friends along just incase. I hit med and then 2 hour only got 3 ws off and it was dead. It hit me for a decent amount, about 80. but it died so fast it didnt matter. Any mele job should beable 2 solo this over 60 without a problem. After I killed it I though it was only one of the normal ghosts on the boat for a sec cuz it died so dang fast. Good Luck and if your on midgar and need help let me know.

Hey my main job is 67war/33nin do you think I could solo this? Also if I did this would it be possible to go as my warrior and still get the NM pop? I don't want to have to go with my Ninja and a bunch of other people if I don't have to. Basically I'm getting this for my Ninja but I want to know if I can go as my Warrior and get the NM and the item when I get off the boat even though I'm not there as my Ninja.

i had no help from anyone when i went to try and do this so i decided to try out a solo attempt in order to see how hard he really was.
I was 50 nin when i did this. He hits at a good pace, you really need to be on your toes when you fight him. Problem is when he starts hitting its almost like a double attack and he eats away shadows fairly quickly. He casts ice spikes and debuffs such as paralyze and sleepga as well as Drain which makes him hard to solo, as i found out.
He hits around 160 a hit when he gets through and he double attacks, which makes it even harder. His attack rate is not as slow as other people make it out to be. I would suggest another high level nin or a pld, although probably a pld would be best since they are more resistant to damage

You'll want to claim this (the mob on the boat) as soon as humanly possible. Two JP players (a RDM and THF) claimed it when I boarded the boat and didn't even have the common decency to invite me to the party to get the quest done... so I had to wait another hour.

I just did this yesterday... lots of running around but the NM was easy as pie. Party: Drk60, WAR60, BLM64, RNG63... the RNG probly could've soloed it but i heard about some people that couldnt kill it with a lvl 70 so... i just wanted to make sure

Hey man, I spent 31 lvs as a whm/war before switching to a drk/war. I never had any problems with mp, and i could contribute to melee better than most melee jobs (with a hammer anyway). As long as I had a good tank then there are no problems (but then again, I always have good tanks, inferior players get the boot from my parties.)

Soloed this as a 71Thf/Nin. Didn't have to pop my 2-hour (wouldn't have done much good anyway >.> )
He hit like a ton of bricks (80-100), but didn't hit me that often. Cast sleep, which landed while I had shadows down. Also attempted to cast Tornado O_O which was interrupted.

I just did this with my 61sam/rng and it was easy as pie :P I had a 38 whm friend healing me and didn't even need my 2h
if I'd been solo I probably woulda needed my 2h but still wouldn't have had much trouble
so I'd say any generic melee level 60+ can take it solo with their 2h or without 2h if they have a mage to keep them healed
I tried it earlier with my 50nin/war and got pwned so don't bother trying that unless you have a full party of 50+ with you

Just thought would give you my experiences of this.
First time i tried I had the assistance of a lvl 72 blm. The fight lasted an awful long time and in the end time vs mp got the better of us. We both died but got it down to about 25% health.
Second time had a lvl 50blm and lvl 71pld along. This time fight was stupidly easy, in reality the pld could have easily solo'd this without breaking a sweat.
Apparently a full team of 55 can take..but I wouldnt be so sure of that, the AGA spells were really hitting hard and curse didnt help

We buffed at the ferry dock. Boat leaves. I run up to the deck, see NM. I run up and start hitting it. In the time it took everyone else to run outside, I had it almost to half HP, it hit me like twice. Sheer comedy. The other people were kinda annoyed cuz I called them all out for this when they wanted to go to bed! 8) It never even got a chance to use curse.

Does this need the Oak STAFF which is a level 39, or the Oak POLE which is a level 40 item?

I fought Engakure (NM Ghost) successfully twice tonight, both times I tanked.
First time we were supposed to havea 61 DRK helping us, but he missed the ship. Here was the party:
NIN50 (me), RDM55, WHM45, BRD50, THF55
We killed it fairly quickly, and I tanked. RDM died in the middle of the fight though, because the THF did SATA + Viper Bite off her, and the ghost did a special attack for a lot of damage ; ;
Second time we had:
NIN50 (me), NIN50, DRG50, WHM40, WHM61, and a high level PLD
The fight lasted a loooong time, but it's fairly easy to tank, since it doesn't attack all that fast, you can keep Utsusemi on almost the whole time.
There was a large crowd of people on the ship for that fight cheering us on ^^
edit: before you ask, since I'll probably never read this page again.
1) I don't know PLD level because he was wearing fishing gear and anon.
2) I did it twice because I was helping someone else the second time.

BST 64 with uncapped HQ familiar (I used funguar pet) can solo this easy.

as long as you get the quest as ninja from ryoma you can change to whatever job while on the ship, i switched jobs after ryoma and talked to ensetsu and leodarian as another job, got the key item from loedarian as another job, did the ship battle as another job and got the ninja AF in cutscene at end of boat ride as another job.
the ghost pops immediately, a high level blm immediately started killing it and we had to invite him to our party, so as soon as you can, rush up to the deck and engage it before someone else does lol
