Summary

Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Walkthrough

To start this quest, you must have completed the quest The Tenshodo Showdown - THF AF1 and activated Thick as Thieves - THF AF2.

First, talk to the galka named Guslam in the Durable Shields Shop in Upper Jeuno. He will tell you about a pair of old gauntlets, made by the legendary craftsman Borghertz, which he heard about somewhere in Monastic Cavern.

Head to Monastic Cavern, which is located at H-11 on the Davoi map. You must find an open a coffer. To do this, you can either pick the lock on a coffer (being a thief), or you can open the coffer with a Davoi coffer key. The keys are dropped in Davoi and Monastic Cavern by Orcish Farkillers, Orcish Dreadnoughts, Orcish Champions and Orcish Dragoons.

Next, head into Monastic Cavern to find a treasure coffer. The coffers appear at I-7, H-7, H-8, G-8 and H-9. Trade your key to the coffer to receive the key item Some old gauntlets.

Take the old gauntlets back to Guslam in Upper Jeuno. He says he lacks the skill to fix them.

Then go to Lower Jeuno, and head to the Tenshodo hideout inside Neptune's Spire. Talk to a mithra named Yin Pocanakhu, who is near the counter. She will offer you an old toolbox that she somehow acquired for 1000 gil. Pay her and she will tell you that she left it in front of the Duty-Free Shop in Port Jeuno.

Go to Port Jeuno and find the old toolbox. Examine the ??? for a cutscene with Borghertz, who asks for Shadow Flames from Castle Zvahl Baileys.

Head to Castle Zvahl Bailey, located on the west edge of Xarbacard. At F-8 in Zvahl Baileys, there will be four torches. Clear the demons in this area, then examine a torch by the iron gate. A notorious monster named Dark Spark will appear. Defeat Dark Spark and examine the torch again to receive the Shadow Flames.

Finally, return to Port Jeuno and re-examine the toolbox to receive another cutscene and your Rogue's armlets.

Do you have to open the coffer before fighting dark spark or can you fight dark spark first? Some friends are going to help me with the fight and they haven't opened coffers yet, want to make sure they can still get what they need from the fight.

I went to Davoi with a Red Mage and me the first time... The red Mage would cast Invis while i looked for coffer. 15 mins passed and there it was, Treasure Coffer... I ran up to it (really excited) and used my pick lock macro... It was a Mimic! I died... so 2 mins passed and mimic dissapeared and rdm Raised me... 3 mins passed and i ran into the next tunnle.. there it was again!! So i took off invis without even thinking and used the pick lock macro.... "you cannot pick while weakend" (******) so i used "Hide".... weakend status wore... and just as it wore a lvl 70 thf (JP) picked the lock... >.< and i got aggroed and died again... i was at 6k tnl now i am at 8k tnl =[...

So after I came back from watching Scarface, i bought Instant Warp and Shinobi-Tabi... i got to Davoi and yet agin the same thf picked the lock in front of me.... After an hour i said F-this i am loggin out... and just as i said it BOOM! coffer spawned... I took off invis and it was a success...

So basically:
1st try: Mimic (fail)
2nd try: SUCCESS!
Whee!!

Crazy. I started this quest tonight, feeling quite bored. A high level THF friend told me that i could easily pick the chest, so I figured "Why not?"
I'm walking through Davoi, and spot a Treasure chest. I had brought some Thief's Tools as back up (I had 6 skele keys and 6 Thief's Tools) so I tried the tools on the chest... and got weakened. Shrugging and being glad it wasn't a mimic, I continued into Monastic Cavern. I find a Coffer withing minutes and go to pick the lock... but I remember that I'm weakened. I waited for 2 hours... finally I decided to leave, and the weakness wore off right when I zoned. I ran back and got the gauntlets on my second try. Yay!! On my way back through Davoi I used another Skele ikey on another chest, 7k gil Awesome. So over all, I'm very happy. Off to kill SDark Spark.

Did this today as a 50THF/NIN, didn't take much time to find the coffer,
what took the time was finding the entrance to Monastic Cavern >.>

found the coffer at (G-8), it was 2 orcs in the room.
dropped invis when they weren't looking and hit my Picking macro.
i started to wonder what was wrong when my macro didn't work, then i noticed i had targeted an orc instead of the coffer >.<
2 secs later he aggroed me, hit flee macro and attempted to zone(/slap <me>) then i remembered i had Hide ^^
recasted invis and waited for the orc to turn again,
1st attempt: Fail
2nd attempt: Fail
3rd attempt: Fail
4th attempt: Fail
5th attempt: You unlock the chest!
Nugattii obtains the key item, some old gauntlets.
now all i have to do is to kill Dark Spark!

*note i used Thief's tools doing this

THF/NIN should have an easy time with this, Tonko is fixed duration not random duration like Sneak and can be recast while invisable.

Boy oh boy! Was this quest ever good for the ol' EXP decrease!

Attempt # 1 : Used a thief tool and it was a mimic. Slapped me around before I could use 2 hour and warp. I died in town from poison before I could make it to my mog T_T

Attempt #2 : Found coffer, disabled invisible and used tools. Recieve aggro from both orcs in the room. I panicked and started spamming my tools, completely forgetting about 2 hour.
Attempt 1 : Fail
Attempt 2 : Fail
Attempt 3 : Fail
Attempt 4 : Fail
Attempt 5 : Fail
Attempt 6 : Success!

Death, before I could use 2 hour.

Moral of this story : Don't panic.
But hey...nothing a little xp party can't fix, right? :]

about picking coffers, im not an expert. this is my first time doing a coffer, and my only other experience was picking my rse chests.

First try- living keys
6 failures, then a mimic on the 7th, perfect dodged ans warped

Second try- Skeleton keys
3 failures and a mimic on the 4th, perfect dodged and warped

Third try- Thiefs tools
2 failures, and got it on the third

i dont know if this was just my bad luck or what, but id go with thiefs tools when doing this

^^ just a note about thf af2... you must first start thf af3.

what?

yes thats right...

when you talk to niina mihngo she will give you two letters and a thieves hideout. these are NOT for af2!!!!!!!! they are for af3!

BUT...

Guslam will NOT speak to you til you have spoken to niina mihngo... trust me i tried SEVERAL times...

I went to windy... spoke to niina mihngo recieved 2 letters and gang hideout location... tried to do that quest but couldnt find tower in sauromague champeign so i logged out to look up the quest info....

The reward for the quest was bonnet... minimum lvl requirement 54...

I thought WTF thats not right!!!!! thats af3!

The quest for guslam is rewarded with gloves... min lvl 52... THATS what i wanted!

I paniced and stressed out but decided... ok im gonna run to jeuno and talk to guslam ONE last time...

Sure enough as soon as i spoke to him a cutscene occured and my af2 quest has begun.

Just shareing my info so new thieves hopefully won't be as confused as me!!

1.) Talk to niina mihngo
2.) Accept the task and get your items from her but do NOT attempt to do this quest yet
3.) Go to jeuno talk to guslam
4.) Do quest as normal according to guide.

This is AF4, the quest for the hat is AF2. You must accept the quest for AF2 before you start your AF4, and you must start AF4 before you do AF5 and AF6 (opening those coffers)

Bleh, definitely do not buy Prism Powders to do this. Tried it twice today, first time I was lucky and found a coffer pretty quick, but it turned into a Mimic. So after waiting 2 hours and partying and actually getting to 52 I came back... no one else in the Cavern, ran around for an hour, used a full stack of powders, used Hide and Camoflauge several times, never saw a single coffer.

Guess I'll level White Mage a few more levels and come back. I wasn't able to open the first coffer there with Skeleton Keys either, though I did open one in Crawler's Nest earlier in the day with one.

I used 3 skeleton keys at THF46 to open 3 treasure chests in a row in Shakrami Maze for my RSE Magic Pattern. No fails, no problems. If what you say is true, it may be different for coffers than chests.

I seem to recall a few posts that kept quoting the same unknown source about Thief's Tools, Living Keys, and Skeleton keys being divided against your DEX to make success rate. That may not be true either, but skeleton keys are probably costly for a reason.

Correcting myself from the last post. Thief tools can make mimics too. I just attempted picking this coffer, and it tried to eat me. Perfect Dodged and Instant Warped my butt out of there.

The reason skeleton keys cost so much is because they're the least likely to accidently to set off a trap. I've only used them twice on a coffer. The coffer didn't open, but it didn't explode or try to eat me either. I've also never seen a mimic outside an BCNM fight, which I hear is because I never use Living Keys. I guess the use of an alchemy item has unexpected results on mundane chests.

WTF! in every site i've been in for this AF.. it says u must have Skeleton Key to open the coffer......sorry to burst ur bubble but u dun need it to open the coffer in Monastic Cvrn to obtain the Item. As a matter of fact, Skeleton keys can be used at 60+, below that THFs cannot use it, and if u do u'll fail to even open ur Zip for a pee!
i bought half a friggin stack of Skeleton, went there found it, 5 high lvl THFs cheering for me while i open the coffer....and BOOM! i fail, i fail, i fail, and i fail again.... 1 JP player, told me im too low, thats y i cant open..so i went with my instinct and bought a stack of THF's tools.. went back, found it...and OPENED it on the first try!!!!!!!!
i think the reason y i suceeded with THF's tool is because this is a quest, and the rules on how to open coffers dunt apply on this situation...or perhaps it was just a glitch, u be the judge
