Summary

Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Walkthrough

To start this quest, you must have completed the quest The Tenshodo Showdown - THF AF1 and activated Thick as Thieves - THF AF2.

First, talk to the galka named Guslam in the Durable Shields Shop in Upper Jeuno. He will tell you about a pair of old gauntlets, made by the legendary craftsman Borghertz, which he heard about somewhere in Monastic Cavern.

Head to Monastic Cavern, which is located at H-11 on the Davoi map. You must find an open a coffer. To do this, you can either pick the lock on a coffer (being a thief), or you can open the coffer with a Davoi coffer key. The keys are dropped in Davoi and Monastic Cavern by Orcish Farkillers, Orcish Dreadnoughts, Orcish Champions and Orcish Dragoons.

Next, head into Monastic Cavern to find a treasure coffer. The coffers appear at I-7, H-7, H-8, G-8 and H-9. Trade your key to the coffer to receive the key item Some old gauntlets.

Take the old gauntlets back to Guslam in Upper Jeuno. He says he lacks the skill to fix them.

Then go to Lower Jeuno, and head to the Tenshodo hideout inside Neptune's Spire. Talk to a mithra named Yin Pocanakhu, who is near the counter. She will offer you an old toolbox that she somehow acquired for 1000 gil. Pay her and she will tell you that she left it in front of the Duty-Free Shop in Port Jeuno.

Go to Port Jeuno and find the old toolbox. Examine the ??? for a cutscene with Borghertz, who asks for Shadow Flames from Castle Zvahl Baileys.

Head to Castle Zvahl Bailey, located on the west edge of Xarbacard. At F-8 in Zvahl Baileys, there will be four torches. Clear the demons in this area, then examine a torch by the iron gate. A notorious monster named Dark Spark will appear. Defeat Dark Spark and examine the torch again to receive the Shadow Flames.

Finally, return to Port Jeuno and re-examine the toolbox to receive another cutscene and your Rogue's armlets.

ok first try went in with a ls friend 74thf who offered to help me, while using tonko and following him as he was dcing and more or less warping to each end of the caverns no sign of a coffer, but he did tell me where not alone,
after he gracefully dc'ed 3 times i can understand why he didnt come back but then i managed to find a coffer used 5 skelly keys to pop a mimic used my newly made macro this for thfs who havent got it yet just in case i called it Code/Red

/ja "Perfect dodge" <me>
/wait 1
/item "Instant Warp" <me>

then i came back the same day after LS PTY, found a coffer within 5 minutes or so this time using 4 keys to pop Key item Some old gauntlets,

later that night not so much later so to speak 2 LS members offered me the chance to do Dark Spark with me which obviosly couldent refuse ^^ THF75 and RDM75 bassicly Dark Spark got OWNED

This was pretty simple, but funny.
I was asking my thf75 friend about it and he told me to buy some thief's tools. I had... roughly 3k. >.> So I bought one and hoped to god it would work. Went to the cavern, found the chest, failed cast invisible (THF50/RDM25) /healed and asked my friend who was getting ready to help me with G1 to bring me some tools and I would pay him back when my AH crap finished. waiting there roughly 90 minutes and popped it with the second of the 3 he gave me. :P Didn't even cast invis for the second one, all the orcs were looking the other way. ^^ I havn't done the af head yet... it looks too annoying atm. ;.;
AF {help me out} please

first try no skele key cause they where like 90k a stack and i just bought a scorpion harness. Very quick on the coffer so now its time to see if I can solo dark spark for fun. If not i have a ton of friends that can help. Oh and i used thief tools. like 21k a stack ^^ so im one happy thf at the moment and I just got an invite:) party on people

So okay my friend is a 52 Thf needs some AF. Now if we go get the coffer my question is after we get it can he change job to 68 pld for the fight? I really don't know if I can tank DS yet (68WAR). Though between me and a pld I don't think we'd even need a mage.

Yeah, he can change to 68PLD and still pop/kill Dark Spark for his THF gloves. As far as a 68WAR and 68PLD being able to kill it without a mage, you probably can. Dark Spark hits reasonably hard, but his accuracy is a little sad. Be careful, as he casts Bio III and has a tendency to explode when he doesn't get his way.

I think you two could deal enough damage to drop him quickly, and the PLD would be able to heal himself enough to keep you guys alive. I've always brought a mage along, but that has always seemed like overkill, lol.

Ok be ready to hate me, no INT or MND or CHR or banana's or sheep's foot or w/e is rumored to have an effect, but found coffer in 2 mins, and popped it on first try with skeleton key.

Wouldnt be so happy but I was 3/3 on first time for gambling with the Goblins for my hat too! :D
lol easy

Found the coffer in the third or fourth pop spot I checked after being in Monastic Cavern for about five minutes, got the Old Gauntlets on my first try with Thief's Tools, no aggro from the surrounding orcs. Level 51 Elvaan Thief/Ninja, no INT+ equipment. Yeah, I felt pretty awesome.
Easy

Got to Davoi, found the coffer, waited a minute or so for a nearby Orc to turn around, got the Old Gauntlets with one Living Key, then used a warp scroll to get out of there.

Took less than 10 minutes.
Got it !

Yea, just a casual note that no one has seemed to post here. If this is your second AF-Hands quest, you don't need to pay the npc an additional 10k to find the box.

Yea, it sounds stupid and all, but it wasnt posted anywhere. Plus, it made my day (woo).

Getting Old Gauntlets on the first try: Priceless

Today was a great day for me. Did LB1, gobbie bag 3 and 4, and got my old gauntlets. Nice. Just when you think the game hates you, it turns a little ray of sunshine on you. :)

Gonna do Darkspark tomorrow!

Getting the AF coffer item....
# Sep 26 2005 at 10:58 AM Rating: Decent
Alright, my question is this:
Lets say I go (thf) with a friend (blm) who also needs their AF item out of one of these coffers. If I pick a lock, is there a chance the item that comes out could be the one she needs instead? Or will it definately be the item the person that opens it needs?
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 31 2005 at 7:43 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I want to let everyone know that if you have already completed RNG Hand AF you do not need to even get the key or pick the chest because it's the same key item. I just wanted to let everyone know before they go through all that trouble. You do still need to defeat Dark Spark.
RE: Redo No Thanks
# Sep 27 2005 at 12:57 AM Rating: Decent
this may be true if you don't finish the AF quest for RNG. I have full af for my rng and I do not have the key item nor will with the quest continue.
lucky!

Venace, try buying some +INT gear and equipping it. I've seen rumors that say lock pick is affected by INT. Don't know if it's true, but it worked for me. I failed 4 times one night, the next day bought a +INT hat and some other +INT gear and popped the coffer on my first try.

Is there something I am doing wrong. I have activated the Quest from Guslam but I have tried picking this coffer and failed everytime. I have burned a stack of thf's tools, a stack of living keys, and 4 skeleton keys(there were no stacks at ah). I cancel the invis and fail everytime on the pick I am a 51 thf and wondering if I am doing anything wrong or do I just have terrible luck. . . or should i just bite the bullet and get a pt together to get the key?
Gah!

Finally hit level 50 tonight, and my party disbands after the mob that got me my level. So, I decide to head to Windurst and get my quest from Nanaa, and head back to Jeuno and grab this one too. I was seeking for a bit and decided it seemed unlikely that I would get a party, so I go check this out.

I get to Monostic Cavern and do a search of the area. There is only one other person there and they are anon. I decide I have a decent shot of finding a coffer so I throw up Tonko and start running around. The second corner I turn, BAM, coffer. I throw of invisible and pick the lock . . .

And had my first encounter with a Mimic. Ow, Ustusemi was up, but it stunned me. I am spamming the hell out of my Perfect Dodge macro, when I finally see I am no longer stunned, I hit it again. Instead of seeing "Yhibye uses Perfect Dodge!" I see purple text saying "00:03:18." That was when I remembered I had Mijin Gakured to Jeuno about 2 hours ago. I felt like and idiot, I deleveled, and I had nothing to show for it. Truth be told, I don't think it would have helped if I had had my 2 hour. Two of the Ranger type Orcs spotted me after the Mimic attacked.

But oh well. I am only 400 to 50, so it isn't so bad. Tomarrow I will go back after some comfort xp is attained, and I am positive I have my 2 hour up.
