Summary

At the close of the Great War, Gilgamesh's father trapped a terrible spirit within a helm. That helm has been stolen, and it is your job to hunt down the thief and get it back.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed The Sacred Katana - SAM AF1 and Yomi Okuri - SAM AF2, and waited until after JP Midnight, to obtain this quest.

First, head to Norg and speak with Jaucribaix at K-8. He sends you to speak with Gilgamesh.

You'll then need to do some traveling. Head to Port Jeuno and speak to Sanosuke at the Duty Free Shop. Then, go to Mhaura and talk to Phoochuchu at LFKDS. Next, go to Bastok Mines and open the door at J-6 for a cutscene. Last, go to Waughroon Shrine in Palborough Mines for another cutscene.

Return to Norg and speak again with Jaucribaix. He will give you a rare/ex item called a Banishing Charm.

Go back to the Waughroon Shrine and trade the Banishing Charm to the burning circle. Inside the BCNM, you will have 30 minutes to kill three demon NMs: Gaki (blm); Onki (smn); and Rasetsu (drk). After killing the NMs, you get another cutscene involving a ninja named Ren. He gives you a key item called Charred Helm.

Grab a Gold Thread and head to Norg and talk again to Jaucribaix. After the next Japanese Midnight, talk again to Jaucribaix to finish the quest and receive your Myochin Kabuto.

72 SMN me
70 BST Retrospect
55 RDM (For refresh) Triste

Retrospect got Carrie on the DRK demon, and me, Garuda, and Retrospect beat up the BLM. BLM went down along with Carrie and I attacked the SMN with Garuda and Retrospect made the mistake of not calling another pet and then attacking the elemental. Triste went down from healing Retrospect and he went down shortly after. I ran to the BC entrance to put up reraise but the DRK reset and didn't come after me.

I raised Triste, and after weakness wore, I put Garuda + Predator Claws on the DRK, then Triste Chainspell Raised Retrospect and he put another Carrie on the DRK and we finished it off easily.

Ok, I must say, this was one of the funnest battles that I've been in in a VERY long time. We did it with 4:

SAM56
SAM67
PLD75/NIN37 (me)
RDM65/BLM32

I ran in and aggrod them all, and kited them around the arena. One SAM provoked the first target. SAMs UNLOADED on the first mob, each doing 5 weapon skills at the start. It fell quick. I kept utsusemi up, and while kiting, I flashed both demons for hate. Once I had them both flashed, I hit invincible, and engaged the second mob. The SAMs finished their first, and joined me on the second. It got very hairy with both mobs wailing on us. Our RDM needed to convert, and saved one SAM who had 7 HP... at the very last second (talk about drama). Third mob was squishy. Didn't give us any problems, and fell about as fast as the first.

It was an incredible fight, but I suggest bringing more people if you have them.

Just did this last night. Worked out pretty well, here is my setup:

60 Sam/War (me)
60 Sam/Blm (not kidding)
60 Whm/Blm
60 Pld/War
61 Mnk/Sam
75 Rdm/Nin

First time we went in me, the pld and the whm almost d/ced and we got completely wipped although the rdm almost killed two of them >.> The second time I kited Gaki with taco + earth staff while the rdm killed one and the rest kill the other. I can't stress how easy it is if someone kites Gaki. I was taking around 30-50 dmg. It was working well till we fought Gaki and he 2hourd.....killed EVERYONE except the rdm. He converted while fighting and killed him. For anyone interested the rdm name was mercy, a very nice guy and an excellent player.

24 hours again?

I was wondering if this is like AF2 Quest where you wait 24 hour real time or if you just have to 24 game time?

Well at first you can Sleep Ransetsu and Onki.
Even it didn't work, when I did it yesterday. ^^'

We went in with:
SAM60/THF <me>
SAM75/NIN
MNK75/NIN
BLM61/WHM
RNG71/NIN
WHM64/BLM

BLM used Elemental Seal + Sleepga (1!! -.-) and died, cause all 3 demons attacked him. But the Elemental was asleep.

So we attacked Ransetsu and killed him, and then Onki, while Gaki was using some spells (Flare and -ga but our WHM did his job well) and at least we killed Gaki. Noone had red hp (not even the BLM; he was yellow and then dead ;) )

So if you have a good healer and 2 high levels who can hold hate it shouldn't be a real problem.

I'm still waiting for Jaucribaix to give me my helmet. :(

"Go back to Norg and report what happened to Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh will hand you a Banishing Charm (RARE EX) and instruct you to toss it into the burning circle in Waughroon. "

That is wrong. Talk to Jaucribaix for the Banishing Charm.
24hrs
# Apr 05 2006 at 6:53 PM Rating: Decent
After waiting 24 hours, Jaucribaix still wouldn't give me my helm, but it occured to me that I had spent the entire time in Norg (I was either not logged on, or was playing on an alt. character).

If you wait the 24 hours and he still won't give you your helm, you can zone out and back in to Norg, and you should get the CS and your spiffy new helm.

Help Answering a Question

Maybe some of you SAMs here can answer questions I have.

First off, is Onibi an elemental and is it a randomly selected elemental?

Second, I'm trying to solve the mystery of Ayakashi, the supposed 3rd named bird in BCNM30 "Birds of a Feather" which is on Alla's profile for the BCNM posted in mid-2004, but which no one has seen since then (summary: 1st reports said there were 3 named birds, 1 of each, later on, reports said there were 2 named birds, 1 of 1 and 2 of the other). I was searching around FFXI sites and found the name Ayakashi pop up with the BCNM for this AF battle. A Feb 2004 guide posted for the SAM AF quests on a number of FFXI websites says Onki summons Onibi, but when Onki used Astral Flow, he summoned an avatar, which was Shiva who used Diamond Dust, but she was named Ayakashi. So, can any of you tell me if Onki summons an avatar when he uses his 2-Hour that is not Onibi and if so, what Avatar that is and what their listed name onscreen is?

I'm a bit skeptical of that first AF guide FAQ, but like I said, maybe some of you know. This may be another Fazasher Death Weapon (which was the joke SE created Shikigami Weapon for) or Refresh on a Taisai (which SE created Taisaijin for). If all else fails, someone can dig through Waughroon's dat files and see if the name Ayakashi is ever mentioned.

I did this today with my boyfriend and some LS buddies. I can confirm that Ayakashi does indeed exist, and appears to be a random avatar summoned when Onki uses Astral Flow. I don't really know if there's any kind of pattern to which avatar is summoned, but in my case, it was Leviathan.

And yes, Onibi is an elemental. It appeared as a fire elemental for us, which is an interesting contrast to Leviathan as Onki's Astral Flow, but once again, I can't say if there is any direct correlation between the two.

Thanks for the answer. Well, now I can at least confirm *a* Ayakashi exists. I'm not sure what was up with Birds of a Feather. Maybe the people who reported the original information got that BCNM mixed up with this AF quest. Ayakashi is a random avatar then, if you got Leviathan and that first report got Shiva.

A few other reports on this battle said Onibi appeared as a fire elemental. I wonder if a few more SAMs can report on what element Onibi was to see if it is always Fire elemental or is random.
SAM/RNG useful

Did this fight today with

60 SAM/WAR Fritzy (me)
60 SAM/WAR Hiratha
61 BLM/WHM Yekim
73 SAM/WAR Saitoh
75 BST/NIN Darkemperor
71 WHM/SMN Allowei

The first time we nearly wiped. We decided the BST would solo the SMN and the 73SAM would solo the BLM while Hira and I would slap the DRK around a bit. Didn't work out so well, we all threw up our Warding Circles and etc but one second I had full HP, and the next I was dead, along with Hira and Yekim. The 73SAM and BST basically finished while WHM healed.

We had to do the fight again for the other SAM, this time we just Sleepga'ed everything and we stood back while I shot off arrows... with that said, if you're doing this fight from 57-60+ I'd recommend /RNG sub. I was thinking about it before I went, but I made the mistake of going /WAR.

The mobs cannot be silenced and they have crazy AoE's which will destroy you... so sub /RNG, stand back, and spam Sidewinders. You'll do more damage, and you won't be at risk of the AoE which nearly one shotted me.

Good luck!

61 SAM
61 WHM
74 RNG

Went in sleepaga II, took out Gaki first. the nuked the other 2, while pld covered, Rng EE, . Then I manafonted, Thundaga III ftw!!! beat the record on Fairy woot!! Was easier than we anticapated
Just finished fight
# Dec 10 2005 at 7:42 PM Rating: Good
Well, that was a lot easier than expected. I went into the fight with:

75 WHM
71 PLD
71 DRK
74 RNG
64 BRD
61 SAM(me)

PLD ran in and voked Rasetsu, the WHM flash'd Onki, I followed right behind them and voked Gaki; then the DRK, RNG, and I proceeded to pulverize him, then we moved on to Onki, destroyed him in a matter of seconds, then we all finished off Rasetsu.

Overall, it was a fun fight, but I recommend that you bring a 70+ tank to make it somewhat easy.

Okay so i read everyone else’s posts and i figured this would be a really hard fight. I tried for 3 weeks to try to get a group with no luck. Well a crazy lvl 75 mnk friend of mine suggested we do it alone. Me as sam 60/smn 6 to use carby to pull the Demon’s one at a time. well as it turned out a lvl 60 rdm and a lvl 75 rng joined us. Well pulling the demons one at a time with carby did not work. We got all the demon’s at once including the smn demons fire ele. I died then the rdm then the Smn and drk demon’s were killed then the mnk died. and we won with the rng killing the blm demon with 40 hps left. Well i just thought i would share the fun story with you all.
owning af helm

Hey, i gonna try this setup....
75sam/thf
75sam/war
75whm/smn
75war/nin
75drk/nin or /war
59sam/war Me

I think this will be a simple fight war takes smn, sam/war tanks blm, other sam and me 2hr blm, blm should be dead, then drk takes drk on:P,smn should be half dead by then sam/war 2hrs smn, smn dead, and then we all gang beat the drk. lol oh and all through the fight we will have warding circle so we will be owning this.

Just thought I'd mention that I had to wait until 12:00 am Japan time after completing AF2 before you'll get the AF3 quest. I'm not sure if this was some fluke or not, but I figured I should put it out there. ^^

SMN75 can solo this
# Oct 09 2005 at 7:02 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah, SMN75 can solo this!!!

I, as a SAM56, was mostly along for background colour, it seems. XD

Took on the SMN demon first, with Leviathan. Killed Onki, and then both of us got killed too... but the SMN75 had Reraise up. After raising us both we rested up to full and then took out the BLM and finally the DRK.

I'm just really amused we pulled it off! XD

I did this last weekend with the following party:

60 SAM/WAR (me)
60 NIN/WAR
61 PLD/WAR
61 DRK/WAR
70 WHM/SMN
73 MNK/WAR

MNK tanked (and killed) Onki, NIN tanked Ransetsu, PLD tanked Gaki. The rest of us beat on Gaki til he died, then beat on Ransetsu. PLD went into the red once, but no deaths. :D

just did this last night as 61 sam. our setup was:
59sam/war
61sam/war (me)
72drg/war
75pld/war
75whm/blm
60rdm/blm

me and rdm took onki with relative ease. i 2hrd him and he used astral flow but couldnt get anything off becuase rdm kept summon slept.

other sam and the drg took gaki. he tried to cast a few ancient spells but never got any off. but he did manage to get a few -ga spells that brought some of us to red health. since me and the rdm finished with onki early, we went to help the drg and other sam w/gaki he was a little harder to drop than onki but went down with relative ease.

while we were all busy with gaki & onki the pld was doing fine solo tanking rasetsu. after gaki dropped everyone rushed to help the pld.
rasetsu was already at 3/4 health bu the time we got there. he did use blood weapon but pld used invincible so there was no problem there.
rasetsu dropped after about 45 secs of fighting.

all you have to do for this fight is be organized and have a battle plan. its not hard at all. the only suggestion i would make is to have a drk or blm cast stun on gaki whenever he tries to cast a big -ga spell.

record time on bismarck was 4:07; our time was 4:28

FYI, when I did this I had three people who needed the helm (me, another samurai, and a BLM who brought his Banishing charm with him, we all had the charm on us). I traded the charm, and when the fight was finished all three of us got the cutscene, had the charm damaged, and received the charred helm without having to go through the fight three times (once for each of us). So be informed that you can bring six people to do this (as long as they all have the charm on them), and will only have to do this fight once for everyone to get the helm.

BTW, this fight was cake, no problem at all, with this setup:

60/30 SAM/WAR (me)
61/30 SAM/WAR (had banishing charm)
75/37 WHM/BLM
72/36 NIN/WAR
59/29 BLM/WHM (had banishing charm)
62/31 THF/WAR or NIN, can't remember
