Summary

Ring the Tuning Fork of Earth upon the protocystal in the Quicksand Caves. A path will open to the trial that awaits.

Walkthrough

To obtain the Earth Avatar Titan, first speak to Juroro in Port Bastok. He is located at I-8 near the drawbridge. If you have sufficient fame, he will give you an item: Tuning Fork of Earth.

To use this, you need to travel to Quicksand Caves and find the Cloister of Tremors. To do so, go to Eastern Altepa Desert and enter (J-7). People often XP here in the mid-40s and you may find this place familiar. Only Sneak will be needed for this entire section, and the distance is fairly short. Once you reach the first room, you want to drop down at the east end of the south wall. Don't drop at the west end, you'll be in the wrong place. Head down that passage until you come to a room, take the passage due west out of that room. You'll find another room where you can drop at the south end this time, drop on the west side, not the east. Run up that passageway and you will come to the Cloister of Tremors. There is a fork inside the Cloister, take the right path to get to the Earth Protocrystal, the left path will take you back to Eastern Altepa Desert in a one-way exit.

Try to fight Titan on Windsday and do not fight him on Earthday. Keep up Barstonra at all times, if you can.

Once you defeat him, you will acquire the Key Item: Earth Whisper. Return it to Juroro for your reward, or hold onto it. If you have all six whispers simultaneously, you can give them to Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters to gain the Moon Bauble' which is basically the Tuning Fork of the Moon, granting you the ability to fight Fenrir. If you are collecting items for the Evoker's Ring, you will want the Desert Light.

Battle Notes

First, a few notes about Avatar in general fights. This is not the Trial Size quest, which is the solo fight, capped at level 20 (refer to Trial Size Trial by XXX for those quests). Everyone who is involved in the fight must have a tuning fork of the correct protocrystal. There is no cap on this battle, although there is a 30-minute time limit (not that it ever seems to be important).

General level guidelines: 60+ for melee and 55+ for mages. You'll want a Black Mage for certain and a solid tank, but the rest is relatively flexible. A well-balanced party is critical, though. You'll likely want at least 2 of the following 3: Red Mage, White Mage and Bard. You will want one of the melee or the Bard to be able to cast Bar-a spells. Having the WHM or BLM try to cast them will be problematic. Our strategy for this was to have the RDM sub WHM and melee using the appropriate En-spell for easy Bar-a casting. Additionally, if you can buy an Enhancing Torque (usually much cheaper than corresponding Torques), that will add 2-3 points of resistance to Bar-spells. Additionally Mal-rings (from the ghost NMs in Gusgen Mines) can be helpful for the fight. You can buff up before entering the protocrystal, so feel free to do so and rest up while still outside.

Battle strategy for all six fights is pretty much the same. The battlefield layout for all six fights is exactly the same, although the coloration scheme for the battlefield will be different. The battlefield is shaped like a long path up the side of hill, with a switchback about halfway to the top. This topographical feature allows the mages to stand above the fight (and out of easy reach of the avatar) while still being able to cast spells upon the combatants. This allows for the tank(s) to have extra time to pull hate back should the mages draw it. It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to keep the correct Bar-spell up at all times. Not doing this will result in multiple deaths when the Avatar's 2-hour comes (at about halfway), and will likely produce a loss. Each avatar is also only easily susceptible to debuffs of the element they are weak to (i.e. Shiva can be Paralyzed). Whether they are susceptible to other enfeebles of very high level is not confirmed.

It is strongly recommended to fight each avatar on the day it is weak to (i.e. Shiva on Firesday) and even more strongly recommended NOT to fight the avatar on its day (i.e. Shiva on Iceday). Spells of each element are much stronger on their specific day of the week.

Each quest is repeatable, but only once per real life day. Once you have returned to the quest giver and gotten your reward, you have to wait 24 hours (some say midnight Japanese time) in order to get the quest again. At that point, you can get a new tuning fork. Each time you complete the quest, you can choose ONE reward from the list, which varies from avatar to avatar.

In order to get the Fenrir quest (The Moonlit Path), you have to have whispers (key items) from all six elemental avatars. This means that you can't turn them in for reward until you have all six, at which point you can give them to the Fenrir quest giver (Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters). So, in order to be able to get Fenrir and all six avatars, you'll need to fight each of them at least twice. Additionally, if you are a Summoner, the Evoker's Ring is only obtainable through the Mama Mia quest in Norg, which would mean you would have to fight them each a third time.

If you can't get any of these quests, the problem is likely fame. Each quest giver is a taru who stands next to a non-taru warrior. If you don't have sufficient fame, the taru will just complain about being hurt a lot while his companion will discuss perseverance and not giving up. If you have sufficient fame, the Tarutaru will give you the fork. The non-taru will give you a Trial Size Tuning Fork if you have met the requirements.

Yes. It can. Requires timing and paying attention to melee TP calls like a hawk. I've got a friend that as a SMN can consistenly participate in skillchains AND magic bursts when he's given sufficient warning on a long enough chain.

Havent managed to do it yet, although i keep trying, but i have been able to do an SC with ifrit's Double Punch followed by Piercing arrow or flaming arrow for Transfixion. Really easy to do with a RNG do to the fact that they gain TP so quick.
Hope this Helps

to do the level 20 solo battles (level 20 cap only u can enter the battle field) you have to have level 3 fame. To do the level 70 prime battles (can take a pt with u no level cap) you have to have level 7 fame.

as for how often u can fight him, you can only fight him once a day are intill the server resets wich is 12:00 a.m. japan time (11:00 a.m. eastern time)

uhh....if ur planning on going doing this wit more than 1 person. That means that Titan will be alot harder. 60+ pt would actually be a recommended pt. lvl 30 pt won't even scratch it
RE: Level?
# Aug 12 2004 at 10:57 AM Rating: Decent
Level 30 party wouldn't make it against Titan Prime, and with the low level quests it's just you, Carbuncle, Titan Prime, and your level capped at 20.

Bring a blm, these things are ridiculously weak to elemental magic, even more so to the one they are weak against.
Confusion
# Jun 19 2004 at 12:06 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, I've finally gotten around to leveling my Summoner and I'm a little bit confused. How does the new lower level Avatar thing work? What is the required level to solo an Avatar? And how much fame do I actually need to get the quests? Thanks for all help!

If you die and leave the battlefield, you can try again immediately. It's only if you win that you have to wait. And that time starts from the time you return to the questgiver and get the reward from him, not from the time you actually beat the Avatar Prime.

do you get the whisper f you do the mini battle?
# Jun 05 2004 at 10:53 AM Rating: Decent
hey guys i got a simple question i've heard different stories from people and i wanna know what you think. If you do the mini battle will you get the whisper as well or is the only way to get the whisper through the lvl 65 battles? someone please help me i need to know
RE: do you get the whisper f you do the mini battle?
# Jun 26 2004 at 12:45 PM Rating: Default
Ok I'm a little late on this reply, but haven't seen one for your post. The only way to get the "whispers" is by doing the level 65 avatar battles. You cannot obtain them from the level 20 battles. The only question I have now... can you still do both battles? Or is it one or the other?
RE: do you get the whisper f you do the mini battle?
# Aug 28 2004 at 9:41 AM Rating: Decent
If you plan on getting Fenrir, you'll need to do the battles again to get the "whispers" for beating the level 65 battles.

#REDACTED, Posted: May 16 2004 at 5:53 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Ok here was the party for my avatars. 71 mnk 75 blm 69 rdm 63 whm 75 whm 54 nin (me). We fought the damn thing on earthsday to lol. This thing is either really weak or having two high lvl dmg casters is amazingly helpful. Fight lasted about 5 mins long and i died to its two hour (1296 dmg). Our lvl 75 whm never went passed 900 mp and the blm never used ancient. Just to give tips for lowbie melee coming along avatars tend to use their astral flow around 1/2 hp which means get outta there unless you wanna be dead. Btw we went and fought garuda right before owned that in 4 mins some seconds and then after titan we did ramuh just because he's weak on that day. Owned him to. Make sure your whm keeps barstonra on you all the time during this battle and gl.

I've said it once, I'll say it again, regardless of what jyneefur thinks, having extremely high level do the work for you makes you forfeit your bragging rights. In the example jyneefur gives in his response to my post, clearly the Damage dealers that where -->20 to 24 levels<-- higher then him are what sealed the victory.

This has always been one of my pet peeves, claiming that something is easy when someone much more powerful actually did it, not you. These posts do not belong on the board. At best they make believe people that a hard task is easy when it's not, at worst it's just a statement that having high-level friends somehow makes you a better player.

Just because he was 21 levels below the casters doesn't mean he did nothing. He clearly didn't just sit at the bottom and watch like a lot of leechers try to do just to get avatars. Granted, he probably didn't tank (although I know level 58 ninjas that have.. and succeeded), and his damage wouldn't be nearly as great as the higher levels, but I commend Zivs on the effort. Or did you just get right into your bashing, Euler, without reading the part where he said he died?

Because my party owned Titan when I was a 48whm with 72mnk, 70brd, 68drg, and 60whm.. does that mean I don't as much right to say I owned him as the other whm did.. just because she was 12 levels higher than me and our tank was 24 levels higher? I don't think so. I worked for it. Zivs died for his.

A post like yours, Euler, has no purpose on the board. Ever hear the adage: If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all...

i know a little about the update. there is now a guy standing next to the taru that will give you a mini fork and it reduces the avatar's level to 20 so you can solo it instead of having a huge party of high levels.

a friend of mine has all of the summons and shes a level 16 summoner...

Yes, you can solo them at level 20 summoner. Talk to the person next to the Tarutaru that gives the normal quest for the Avatar. You have to solo with carbuncle, and you dont have to walk to the Cloister the guy will Teleport You

MNK 72 / WAR 36
DRG 68 / WAR 33
BRD 70 / WHM 35
WHM 60 / SMN 30
WHM 48 / SMN 20 (me, and yes, I know my subjob is horribly unleveled, but leveling Summoner sucked without avatars) >.<

Six minute battle. (Record was 4 min and some seconds.) Titan never stood a chance. The Monk tanked, obviously, and the other White mage and I threw out Haste, Regen II, Cure IIs and IIIs on him when necessary. His HP never dropped below 3/4. The Bard never had to Cure. Mages had about 1/2 MP when finished. No 2-hours used.

Make sure you buff it up. (Protectra III, Shellra III, Barstonra, Earth Carol) Bard kept Mage's Ballad II on us and I'm-not-sure-what on the melee.

To all the people I've argued with about the Trial Size Trial by <element> quests.. This was 100 times easier than Trial Size Trial by Earth.. and we didn't even have a full party. More power to whoever wins the Trial Size quests.. I cheer for you. ^^

(And another note, in case someone wants to put in their two cents worth about me leeching off a high level party: The Dragoon was waiting in Quicksand for his party, and he happened to stop by my leveling party to talk to someone he knew. He had mentioned Titan and I casually joked about if they had room for a measly level 48 White mage. He said they were full. However 10 minutes later he /telled me asking if I wanted to join because 2 people didn't have enough fame. I jumped on the opportunity and my leveling party - my static LS party - was excited for me. Compared to the other White Mage, I was only about 50 MP short of her MP tank. During battle, I Cured as much as her, if not more. She did Haste, I did Regen II. The only thing she had on me was Shellra III, which I don't have yet. Otherwise, we were equals.) ^^

First of all, it's not a burning circle. They're protocrystals. ^^

Following the maps posted at http://ffxi.killvoid.com/maps/quicksand.htm

You enter from Eastern Altepa Desert on Map #1 (top one) shown in that link. (This entrance to Quicksand can be found traveling almost directly east from the Teleport-Altep location, north of the Korroloka Tunnel zone.)

The two spots on the map that show arrows pointing down are cliffs. You want to fall down the cliff to the EAST at (J-7).

Follow the squiggly hallway to the open room. Stay to your right (going west). You want to enter the hallway going west, into the next little room. (On the map, this is the room with two more drops, one marked with an 'A' and the other with a squiggly drawn-on line and Japanese writing.)

Drop down the cliff to the far WEST at (E-10) and follow the drawn-on squiggly line. This will zone you into the Cloister of Tremors. Inside the Cloister, stay to your right. (The other way will zone you into the Desert, but you can always zone back in if you accidentally go there.)

Sneak is the only thing needed. I made it from the entrance to the Cloister on my first cast of Sneak. It was a very short distance, which surprised me. ^^

Edit: Added grid positions for clarification.

I do truly truly wish people would not complain so bitterly about incomplete information. The people who submit the information to this site owe ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the people who are reading it for free. If you are ready for this quest (that is, if you are of a very very high level and have a party of very very high level players helping you) then you are more than welcome to accomplish the quest yourself without a printout of paper next to you giving you step-by-step 'pull the lever and get a banana' walkthroughs through any part of the game. Then if you are so inclined you can submit a full report of how you did it in a detailed submission to this site.

In short, do not demand. CONTRIBUTE.

For a "scholar" you don't seem to know much about how Allakhazam works. The quest write up is unfinished. I've seen Titan in game, so I assure you the quest implementation itself is done.
