Summary

Ring the Tuning Fork of Earth upon the protocystal in the Quicksand Caves. A path will open to the trial that awaits.

Walkthrough

To obtain the Earth Avatar Titan, first speak to Juroro in Port Bastok. He is located at I-8 near the drawbridge. If you have sufficient fame, he will give you an item: Tuning Fork of Earth.

To use this, you need to travel to Quicksand Caves and find the Cloister of Tremors. To do so, go to Eastern Altepa Desert and enter (J-7). People often XP here in the mid-40s and you may find this place familiar. Only Sneak will be needed for this entire section, and the distance is fairly short. Once you reach the first room, you want to drop down at the east end of the south wall. Don't drop at the west end, you'll be in the wrong place. Head down that passage until you come to a room, take the passage due west out of that room. You'll find another room where you can drop at the south end this time, drop on the west side, not the east. Run up that passageway and you will come to the Cloister of Tremors. There is a fork inside the Cloister, take the right path to get to the Earth Protocrystal, the left path will take you back to Eastern Altepa Desert in a one-way exit.

Try to fight Titan on Windsday and do not fight him on Earthday. Keep up Barstonra at all times, if you can.

Once you defeat him, you will acquire the Key Item: Earth Whisper. Return it to Juroro for your reward, or hold onto it. If you have all six whispers simultaneously, you can give them to Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters to gain the Moon Bauble' which is basically the Tuning Fork of the Moon, granting you the ability to fight Fenrir. If you are collecting items for the Evoker's Ring, you will want the Desert Light.

Battle Notes

First, a few notes about Avatar in general fights. This is not the Trial Size quest, which is the solo fight, capped at level 20 (refer to Trial Size Trial by XXX for those quests). Everyone who is involved in the fight must have a tuning fork of the correct protocrystal. There is no cap on this battle, although there is a 30-minute time limit (not that it ever seems to be important).

General level guidelines: 60+ for melee and 55+ for mages. You'll want a Black Mage for certain and a solid tank, but the rest is relatively flexible. A well-balanced party is critical, though. You'll likely want at least 2 of the following 3: Red Mage, White Mage and Bard. You will want one of the melee or the Bard to be able to cast Bar-a spells. Having the WHM or BLM try to cast them will be problematic. Our strategy for this was to have the RDM sub WHM and melee using the appropriate En-spell for easy Bar-a casting. Additionally, if you can buy an Enhancing Torque (usually much cheaper than corresponding Torques), that will add 2-3 points of resistance to Bar-spells. Additionally Mal-rings (from the ghost NMs in Gusgen Mines) can be helpful for the fight. You can buff up before entering the protocrystal, so feel free to do so and rest up while still outside.

Battle strategy for all six fights is pretty much the same. The battlefield layout for all six fights is exactly the same, although the coloration scheme for the battlefield will be different. The battlefield is shaped like a long path up the side of hill, with a switchback about halfway to the top. This topographical feature allows the mages to stand above the fight (and out of easy reach of the avatar) while still being able to cast spells upon the combatants. This allows for the tank(s) to have extra time to pull hate back should the mages draw it. It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to keep the correct Bar-spell up at all times. Not doing this will result in multiple deaths when the Avatar's 2-hour comes (at about halfway), and will likely produce a loss. Each avatar is also only easily susceptible to debuffs of the element they are weak to (i.e. Shiva can be Paralyzed). Whether they are susceptible to other enfeebles of very high level is not confirmed.

It is strongly recommended to fight each avatar on the day it is weak to (i.e. Shiva on Firesday) and even more strongly recommended NOT to fight the avatar on its day (i.e. Shiva on Iceday). Spells of each element are much stronger on their specific day of the week.

Each quest is repeatable, but only once per real life day. Once you have returned to the quest giver and gotten your reward, you have to wait 24 hours (some say midnight Japanese time) in order to get the quest again. At that point, you can get a new tuning fork. Each time you complete the quest, you can choose ONE reward from the list, which varies from avatar to avatar.

In order to get the Fenrir quest (The Moonlit Path), you have to have whispers (key items) from all six elemental avatars. This means that you can't turn them in for reward until you have all six, at which point you can give them to the Fenrir quest giver (Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters). So, in order to be able to get Fenrir and all six avatars, you'll need to fight each of them at least twice. Additionally, if you are a Summoner, the Evoker's Ring is only obtainable through the Mama Mia quest in Norg, which would mean you would have to fight them each a third time.

If you can't get any of these quests, the problem is likely fame. Each quest giver is a taru who stands next to a non-taru warrior. If you don't have sufficient fame, the taru will just complain about being hurt a lot while his companion will discuss perseverance and not giving up. If you have sufficient fame, the Tarutaru will give you the fork. The non-taru will give you a Trial Size Tuning Fork if you have met the requirements.

I wanted a Titan's Cudgel for skillup purposes, but nobody else wanted to do the fight...so I did some research and figured i'd try to solo the guy.

I brought a Hi-Pot tank and took out 13 pots, brought 2 Pamama au Laits, and had +28 (yes, only 28) in Earth Resistance gear. I used Carbonara and a few +HP items, and had about 1350 HP when I went in. (Hume, by the way)

Titan has really, really bad accuracy. I have upwards of +70Eva, but only used about +25 for the fight; I feel I could have worn less. The only things you really need to worry about are his Stone IV spells, Geocrush (Add: Stun), and his 2HR, all which ignore shadows.

I was hit by 2 Stone IV's, both hit for 87. Geocrush'd four times, 104, 107, 266, and 864. Earthen Fury(his 2HR) landed for 256 damage. In the end I used 9 of the 13 Hi-pots I brought, and both au Laits. Also, he did hit me once when I fumbled my macros, for 86+97(En-) damage.

If you bring about 40~50+ in Earth Resist, I doubt you'll take much damage at all from any of those attacks. I would suggest anyway, that you stay at max HP as much as possible for those 'Oh SH*T' moments.

Oh yes, if you have Aura Steal, you can steal his Stoneskin right off. I didn't absorb it, but it was nice to not have to break it on your own.

It was a pretty fun fight, though a little long (14 minutes, almost 15) but i'd say it was worth it, unless you're one of those THF's who doesn't enjoy solo'ing stuff.
prime avatar question
# Jul 11 2006 at 5:50 PM Rating: Decent
I've made the mistake before of getting my mini tuning fork but entering the prime avatar battle field because I didn't traded the mini-tuning fork to the crystal, of course I was slaughtered in about two seconds (my smn is only lvl 20). The question I pose is it seems that you can warp to the crystal by trading the mini fork but can enter the prime battle field if you don't trade the mini fork to the crystal, so why doesn't everyone just warp to the crystal with the mini fork and choose to do the prime battle? If you get rid of your mini fork you can always get a new one. Every post I see gives a description of how to walk there, but if you can warp why isn't that in any prime battle post's? Am I way off base on this one, please let me know?
prime avatar question
# Aug 01 2006 at 2:46 PM Rating: Decent
I'm not positive, but I /believe/ you have to be on a Summoner job in order to be warped to the protocrystal via the Trial-Size Tuning Forks.
prime avatar question
# May 14 2008 at 12:46 PM Rating: Decent
that is exactly the reason. tTe mini fork allows you to warp to the crystal if you are on the SMN job just so you dont have to treck across dangerous zones as a level 20.

Solo'd as 75 RDM/NIN and even broke the battlefield record at 16 Min and 17 Sec.

Uts + Stoneskin + phalanx + Barstone + Enaero + Haste with a refresh and cure when needed and that was pretty much it. Astral Flow didn't even break stoneskin. Still had over half of MP left and didn't have to convert.

Was a fun fight, and now I have my club.

GL to all.

I just whooped up on Titan, after getting owned by Leviathan, and almost beating Shiva. I went as SMN/NIN. My strategy is to use Yagudo Drink, Summon Carby, Assault, Astral Flow, Searing Light, repeat. Use more Yagudo if needed, and be sure to bring some Hi-Potion to heal, and some Ether just in case. I forgot to reuse my Yagudo Drink when the first ran out and didn't use the full on assault method with Levy. With Shiva I was just unlucky and was targeted instead of Carby when she cast Blizzard II, did 150 damage and I had 146 HP, one more Searing Light would have won it for me too. I didn't get any buffs before any of the battles and wasn't in dire need of any anyway, I hope this helps and don't be intimidated by Titan's size, he's really not too tough!

*For equipment I went in the full Trader's set with HP+ earrings, rings, and necklace. To cut spell interuption I used the 2 Hermit's Wands and the Heko Obi+1.

Yes primes can be soloed. The 100% obvious option is RDM for it. My LS has a RDM wo has been able to solo all except Fenny of course simce about level 72, is 75 now and owns them. Personally I think various level 75 jobs could solo these, will be happy to give it a go as WHM/SMN when I get to 75, Astral Flow dont scare me one bit. With 30 mins to do it in....

I completed this last night with four other members of my LS. This is what we did:

Party:

64 WHM/BLM
62 NIN/WAR
62 SAM/WAR <~Me
60 RDM/BLM
54 BLM/WHM

The first time, we died because Barstonra wore and he did Earthen Fury. Ouch. Only the NIN was left standing after that and then Titan pulled Geocrush out when the NIN's shadows were down.

The second time we made damn sure to have Barstonra up at all times. Only snag was that the WHM ran up to Barstonra us, but the RDM and BLM didn't get it. So when Titan used Earthen Fury again, they went down. WHM just raised them mid battle and we proceeded to own Titan.

We fought him on Firesday and the NIN and I performed Detonation Skillchains for Aero magic Bursts. The fight would have probably gone faster if we had brought more damage dealers, or even just another sixth member, but it only took us about 8 minutes.

The most important thing about this fight is to keep BUFFS UP AT ALL TIMES!

I've been battling the lvl 20 Titan Ramuh and Shiva for almost 3 mounths now (yes i really suck) mostly i do them once every 2 weeks, or whenever i'm bored. I got to 60whm and got Garuda with party. My problem is that when i try to pick up the key item forks for Titan, Ramuh and Shiva's 60 prime fights, the little taru dudes ignore me.
Questions:
~Once you pick up the lvl 20 mini forks, are you unable to collect the lvl 60 key item fork?
~Is there a way to trade in the mini forks for the key item forks?
~Do the lvl 60 prime fights need more fame then the lvl 20?
Here's the stupid question:
~Are you allowed into the lvl 60 prime battle field without the key item?

I don't think so. If so, drop the tuning fork, you can talk to the NPC and get another one back anyway.

Yes, LVL 60 prime fights require level 7 fame where as the level 20 fights only require level 2. Actually, you can get the level 60 avatar fights at about fame 6 1/2, I got titan on level 6 fame, but you will need around level 7 fame.

1. Question:

Do you need to have smn main or sub for doing the Prime fights??

2. Question:

I have a 70rdm, 61rdm, 66drg, 47blm (and a tank 70+) with me (47smn). Can we make it with this setup??? Which avatars can we not make with this setup? is leviatan stronger than the others??

no, you dont need smn main or sub.

um, with that setup, it is possible to do it, but id recomend more DD, definately.

leviathan is a little "harder" alog with garuda because they heal themselves, and with a low DD pt, they might be tough.

at that lvl, becareful of the 2hr, it will probly kill you at that lvl, keep up baraera at all times and it only does 100-500, but the mages just need to stay back

fenrir is much harder (i have not fought him myself because i am too low) and requires, from what i hear a completly 70+ pt

not really, i got fenrir as a 43 thf (rest of the pt was 75 though)

My party just defeated Titan. We were 58SMN 60DRK 68PLD 68RDM 61SAM 64WHM. We had very little problems. Just the DRK died when Titan used 2 hour. I just raised him and we went along killing Titan. SMN used 2hour with Garuda when Titan had 25%HP left. Was a great fight and finished it on our first try! Good Job everyone!

I figured I would post my parties success stories, so that people know it is possible to have a good party of level 60's go kill Titan. Our Party Consisted of a RNG62, PLD61, BRD60, WHM59, BLM60, RDM59.

As a head's up Titan will use his 2hr ability at 50% life. this will hit for about 1200 hps and has a pretty big radius. Blink/Utsusumi and Stoneskin reduce this damage to nothing, becuase of the shadows. Also if the mages are far enough back they won't get hit at all. Titan is weak to Wind, and yes we fought him on windsday.

The battle lasted about 8 minutes, this included the time at the begining where the mages were putting on their buffs, this included shell, protect, blink, and stoneskin. Barstonra and Earth Carol are a must as Titan hits for about 100 a strike and has an additional affect of 200 or so. With the right earth resistances this drop the added damage to about 100. We didn't need to use any potions or spend massive gil on it. Mage's used pies, PLD used Fish and RNG used Steak. I do think everyone used their two hour at somepoint, after he (titan) used his 2hr. The only one I'm not sure about was the RDM.

Utsusemi doesn't block any other AoE nuke in the game, I know I personally have used 2hrs through Blink at least, and it's about 70% chance to resist, and I do it a lot, I'm pretty sure blink won't block this. But having Stoneskin on your party is a good idea, so take a summoner along.

Maybe you aren't on the right level job, i.e. Trial Size Trial by Earth is a 20 smn cap while Trial by Earth is a 45 cap. So if you're a lvl 44 or below anything you probably won't get the quest.

I have blk at lvl 15 i could sub as well. but so far i've been trying to solo it and it still pounds me. I run up cast carbi and send him in to attack after casting dia, bio, and blind. I run back down the pathway to put some distance between us for when he kills carby then i have 10 sec to call carby again and repeat. i've been trying with my rdm but it hasnt been working very well. I'm open to any and all suggestions. 6 times killed and frustrated.

I haven't done this yet, but as a tip, bio and dia don't stack. Bio overwrites dia, so you should pick which one you want and stick with that. Or, at the very least, don't use them back to back. Dia weakens defense, Bio weakens attacks, and both lower hp over time. Good luck!

Wow, that really has got to be the most ignorant post I've ever seen. Congrats on figuring out that Dia and Bio do not stack, I'm sure it was the most fulfilling moment in your life. Please keep in mind that not everyone has such a keen perception of noticing these details in a virtual reality. People ask questions to learn, not to be ridiculed.

From what I've experienced: Bio overwrites Dia, but a stronger Dia can overwrite a weaker Bio. I've heard that the DoTs stack but not the effects. I'm not sure about any changes or anything though. Good Luck :D

Actually, your the one who is wrong, so I wouldn't be calling him a newb. Dia overwrites Bio, but Bio doesn't overwrite Dia. If you cast Dia, then Bio both attack down and defense down will stick. But only one of them will still do HP down. It all has to do with the elemental chart and how dark element affects light element. Go Ballista with a friend and try it.

Note: Next time, don't be such a noob.

your the only one here who has to check there facts my friend. I casted Dia on a Em with average defense. When i checked the mob again it had low defense. I then casted bio and checked it again and it no longer said low defense... now lets see u argue with that. Ohh and by the way it was a level 35 mob and i have CoP.
