Summary

The Rhinostery has developed a new "mini" tuning fork of water. Ringing it upon the protocrystal in Den of Rancor will open the path to a one-on-one battle with the beast that awaits inside. However, only summoners are allowed to take up this challenge.

Walkthrough

Things to remember:

  • This is a solo battle.
  • There is a level 20 cap on this battle.
  • There is a 15-minute time limit.
  • You can only use Carbuncle.

Speak to Verctissa in Norg, standing next to Edal-Tahdal at (H-9). You must have at least level 3 fame in Norg before she will allow you to do this quest.

If you meet the requirements, she will present you with a Mini Tuning Fork of Water.

  • This is not a key item, like the Tuning Fork of Water, and therefore requires a space in your inventory.

When you have made your preparations, trade the Mini Tuning Fork of Water back to Verctissa. She won't keep it. Trading her the Mini Tuning Fork of Water will warp you directly to the Cloister of Tides for the fight.

Try to fight Leviathan on Lightningsday and do not fight him on Watersday

Upon defeating him, you will receive the ability to summon Leviathan to your side.

hello!!

ok so first off for all those out there here is the deal. 0 fame is needed... i have not done a single quest in windy, mhaura, khazam region and i still got the mini forks thunger and fire -.O fame not needed.

ok i went in with following (over kill >_<)
6 HI-Potion (expected the worst)
6 HI-Ether (50 MP and came in handy a lot O_O)
5 yagudo drink (pretty much just incase for the 15 min battle 3 min a piece)
1 stack of boiled crab (1 a battle)

equipment that was important:

i got the evasion +5 hands and head gear and +3 evasion boots
i also got 2X physical earings, bomb ring (+15 HP and +2 defense (was not to helpful in ifrit battel -5 fire resisitance >_<)
also i had a hermits wand and a heko obi +1 = -33% interupt rate
other than those def+ equip

summon skill lvl:
48-50 (50 by the final battle)

tactics:

ok first thing i did was before the battle i found anyone who could cast shell and pro 2+ and got it... then i entered the battle field and used my boild crab (15 min is how lon git lasts so useing in battle ensures every seconds use) aquavieled,

then i ran to the first turn cast carbuncle (if you get in range that you can see the avatar they will aggro the cast and will be right beside you when you finally cast it.) use a yagudo drink then run up to the edge of the aggro range and have carby attack, use astral flow before carbuncle hits the avatar to avoid hate from it. now use searing light ( remember not to move to fast because avatar may follow you and you don't want him to move out of range.) when searing light hits run down and around the corner again. run around the bend and use an ETHER or HI-ETHER now wait till you see carbys name disapear and start spamming carby. when carby casts run a little further away to avoid getting hit by a (elelment) II. when carby hits him he shoudl get full hate again. run close and spam searing light when carby begins if avatar dosen't follow run which ever way will get you the furthest away from the avatar (and FAST) in most of the battles the avtar started hitting with more BP attacks and killed carby faster.

if carby goes away fast just keep running until you can't go further either summon carby or use a HI-Ether (if carby is still alive) when carby dies summon aggain. now run with carby because you have limited time at this point (avatar may have taken longer to kill carby) use searing light when avatar is in range and run back the way you came if there was room or run by the avatar if you are lucky searing will kill it if you are not just repeat process but use poison nails in place of searing light. be careful to watch your MP and make sure yagudo drink is up (it will make carby cost 1 every 3 seconds) eventually the avatar will die. watch out for it's 2 hr if you aren't in range of it you have a damn good chance of still winning.

beilieve me on this i killed leviathan with 2 searing lights and a lot of running. he killed carby during the 3rd searing light before it coudl cast and astral fell so i had to work hard. remember 15 min time limit. it took me 14min 13 seconds for leviathan....

Avatar won, and how many times fought, in order, and difficulty for me:

Shiva: Won 1 battle (medium, hits hard and enjoyes her 2hr, nothing else to really worry about)

Titan: won 1 battle (easy, just watch out for his ranged slow attack, and bind attacks. this guy is a push over)

leviathan: won 1 battle (Very hard, Gravity sucks >_< and didn't do it to me but i hear it can heal its self O_o)

Ifrit: lost first battle, Won second battle (medium, likes his 2hr -.O and lots of DMGing attacks)

garuda: won 1 battle (Very hard, blink and her 2hr are a bad combo... blink dosen't block searing light though ^_^)

ramuh: Won 1 battle (Extremly hard, likes to paralyze you T_T A LOT)

but as you can see 6 avatars in 7 battles i love it ^_^ ramuh is your best DD for quifim with his AOE paralyze attack... it can MB OH YA! and don't forget to get all the SC your avatars can do with your PT.

Good Luck everyone and enjoy your avatars!

you do need fame. It's tenshendo fame. You can do zinc ore qst in bastok or yugado necklace qst in windy to raise fame.
RE: my experience
# Nov 21 2004 at 11:03 PM Rating: Decent
You DO need level 3 fame here, and lv 2-3 fame in each city you complete take these quests in.

You must have already done alot of fame quests or mission that you forgot about, because I tried doing this quest with fame lv 2 and I DID NOT GET IT. After I did about 3 more big quests I was able to get it later on.

4 Yagudo Drinks (YD)
3 Ethers
3 Hi-Potions
{Job}
smn/nin
{REASON}(dual weild) 2 Hermits wands 50% chance of getting carby back out if something goes wrong.
{Strategy}
enter battle feild and go a little past bend and use YD, then summon carby and make way to avatar stay out of aggro range and inch ur way to avatar while mashing assault macro. carby should go straight to him without u getting aggro. run back past the bend a lil bit... while waiting there mash ur carby macro til carby gets summoned after carby comes out wait for him to engage then run back behind crystal as far as u can go and mash carby macro. after he gets summoned wait for him to engage and run past bend a lil bit...use YD when it runs out and do this over and over til ur 2nd yagudo drink runs out {REASON} to wittle his life down so u can use 2 Searing lights instead of three. NOW his life should be at 5/6; when ur second yagudo drink runs out... wait for carby to die. when u summon him pop a yagudo drink and use astral flow right away {REASON} cause u get all hate right now....then when carby hits avatar he takes all hate in 1 to 2 hits. Now run up to avatar make sure ur 'close' hit searing light macro( you dont have to target avatar /pet "Searing Light" <bt> automatically tagets the "partys" mob)...bam carby has all hate take off running to other side of map {REASON} need time for Blood Pact to come back. carby dies u summon him... pop ether and follow carby to avatar Searing light should be ready... and hit searing light macro to kill him.

I've only lost to leviathan and ramuh all others took me 1 try with this method. Hope this works for all u smns out there!

I just beat this quest with my lvl 20 smn and set the record on Diabolos at 3 minutes 54 seconds...but I have a question. I still have the Mini Tuning Fork of Water. Can I toss it or can I trade it back for something to the NPC who gave it to me? I guess if nobody knows I'll find out next time I go to Norg.

Different people seem to do better with a different strategy; I had the hardest time getting the 3 searing lights to work (died 13 times before I got Shiva on #14), but I tweaked it so it worked for me. What works for me is to run up to the bend, summon Carbuncle, then run at the avatar and use Poison Nails (particularly good on Ramuh; it doesn't matter if you get paralyzed). Carby will grab hate from it (unless he misses, which is rare if your summoning is capped), and you can run back down to the crystal at the bottom. For Ramuh/Shiva (if you hit Shiva for some reason) cast Paralyna, and then wait for the Carbuncle sign to disappear (meaning he's dead). Re-summon Carbuncle; he'll sit near you for a moment, then run off to the avatar as soon as it's in sight. Pop your Yagudo potion (the avatar is going to keep coming at you), set off your 2-hr, and then set off Searing Light (make sure you're near the avatar). Then keep running up to the other crystal; Carbuncle has hate. Wait for Carby to die, re-summon, wait for your bloodpact to run down and pop an ether (you'll get hate from this) then use Searing Light. Run back down, and repeat. It's worked great for me so far (have everybody but Titan; don't have enough Bastok fame yet), and it has another advantage- poison seems to stick longer on summons than Dia or Bio, so even if the avatar ends up killing you, you still have a chance of winning.

The biggest scare I had was on Leviathan. I got aggro from triggering Poison Nails, so Leviathan used Tail Whip- on me. So I'm trying to run down the lane with Gravity on me... *shudders* I managed to get Carbuncle back out, and do the 3 searing lights, but Leviathan still had a sliver of health left. So I meleeed/banished him for the last 40 damage. *whew*

Also, Aquaveil and a Hermit's Wand are your friends here; even with an avatar attacking me I've been able to get Carbuncle out. My advice would be to cast Aquaveil AFTER you zone into the fight, though- it doesn't last very long, so it's good to have along.

Also, if you have Garuda and manage to get to the 30s (you just have that one avatar you're having trouble with), cast Blinkga on you- that's helpful, too.

Screwed, no. Here's a couple scenarios.

Screwed if: You're close to Leviathan when he uses Tidalwave.
Why?: You take a lot of damage, Carby is dead, and Leviathan is close meaning he'll interrupt a Carby cast.

Okay to Go if: You're NOT close to Leviathan when he uses Tidalwave.
Why?: Even if you get damaged in Tidalwave, you can still be okay (with au lait), and you should be far enough away that you can keep running to the other end of the arena (either up or down) and summon carby when you get to the end w/o interrupt, just make sure to come to a FULL STOP and wait 1 second before summoning, or you'll interrupt. I did this against Ifrit, so he killed me (the first time).

Anyway, the best way to make an Avatar 2HR into an overcomeable situation is to make sure Carby is fighting the Avatar as far down or up the path as possible, giving you a lot of running room should you need the full 24 secs to recast Carby. I.E. you JUST summon Carby when Leviathan uses Tidalwave, and you got 20 sec left on recast timer, so you can run up the path.
Not hard you guys...

Few Misconceptions that need to be cleared up:
Searing Light damage DOES NOT depend on MP Smokescreen.
You don't need more than a Yagudo Drink for these battles, but a DEF raising food such as crab or fishkabob helps.
I take this to every battle:
1 Yag Drink (1.8-2k on fairy)
2 Ether (only use one occasionally) (1.2-1.4k each on fairy)
1 Pamama au Lait (800 on fairy)
1 Boiled Crab or Fish Mithkabob (600-800 on fairy)

3 Searing Light method isn't just for record breaking, it makes it easier.
Gives the Avatar less time to use their Blood Pacts, like the lvl 2 Magics and 2Hrs.
On lightsday kills the Avatar in 3 hits without fail (as long as you're close to the avatar when you use it so that it hits).
The MOST time its ever taken is 4:20 (On Garuda I had the wrong macro set, so I released Carby right after I summoned him, instead of Assaulting).
Most of the time I get around 3:30 with the 3 Searing Light Method.
Super Ethers take too much time and I'm sure generate more hate than a normal ether, which is all you really need for this method.
It IS true that with this method, if the Avatar uses their 2 HR, you're probably screwed, unless you're running past them as it hits Carby. I got lucky once, as I was able to just keep running and get Carby out for the 3rd Searing Light to kill.
RE: Not hard you guys...

I just fought Leviathan on Lightsday. I brought a hi-potion, 2 hi-ethers, 3 yagudo drinks, and a steamed crab. My summoning skill was capped for a level 20 SMN. I managed to get Searing Light off 3 times successfully, but Leviathan managed to survive barely and he killed me. It is not always "without fail", you can still have bad enough luck that it isn't a guaranteed kill. My first one didn't do as much damage as SL usually does, the second on was good and the third SL did barely over 100 damage leaving Leviathan alive enough to eat me.

I would recommend packing a Pear Au Lait for this encounter (even though it's not a big difference). While it has a shorter duration than the Pamama Au Lait's 10 minutes, it regenerates 3 HP per tick instead of 2.

Also, Vampire Juice could be a very useful food -- its +60 Max MP effect can speed things up a bit.

The Pear au Lait is a good idea, but not totally neccisary, though the 3 HP per tick would be a lot better.

Vampire Juice would be irrelivant. MP means nothing the moment you use Searing Light = 0 MP.

Food: Boiled Crab

Panama au Lait
2 Hi-Potion (for safety, never used)

Buffs: Protect, Aquaveil, Bar-spell if you have it.

I've done every avatar without ever having to buy an expensive ether. It takes practice but it can be done and once you've beaten one the rest fall like clockwork.

Timing is everything in this battle. That is what takes practice. Sending carby at him, 2houring, doing Searing Light while you're all in the right position then getting to the other side of the arena to resummon. This way you take minimal damage.

IMO Super Ethers are WAY too slow...regular ethers + Yag drink should give you plenty of MP no problem.

I usually use 3 ethers, 2-3 potions, and one yag drink per battle. So far the 3 Searing Light strategy works great, far better than the "tank it till its half down" theory that I have yet to get to work.

2 yuadgo drinks (just in case but i only ever use 1)
2 ether (which i use straight after searing light so i dont have to wait too long for my mp a long time)
2 potions (yet again just in case but i only use one)
and with my strat i managed to beat ramuh and smash the record on the fairy server.
On all my avatar battles i have been so close to the record the most time it has ever taken me was 4 mins 20 sec's.
Good luck to all who try it cant get to the point where you just want to give up but dont you will get them and when you do you will know it was your effort that got you them ^^

Unless you are trying to beat the record,i suggest using carbuncle to attack the avatar over and over till the avatars hp is down at least one quarter to one third,THEN use astral flow->searing lights.it will only take 2 of them to finish the avatar.i was using the fast searing light stratagy for the last 2 weeks,i only beat Titan,i was getting beat constantly, the avatars used their 2 hour on me and the chances of Carbuncle missing his 2 hour seemed higher or he didnt hit fo the total 210 damage to the avatar .
Using my stratagy today,i beat Shiva,Ifrit and Ramuh,in a 6 hour period.i cast Carbuncle 4 times before using the 2 hour,he took the avatars HP down enough.
i suggest using a pumpkin pie for extra MP for the Carbuncle fights.remember, you have 15 minutes to complete these solo fights,i suggest you use it.
Good luck.

I am a 64 whm and a 30 smn. I found this one easier to solo than quest because the you do not need the "paint brush" to enter.

Prep Items:
(2) Super Ether (17k each)
or (3) Hi Ether +1
(1-3) Hi Potion +1
(2-3) Yagudo Drinks (1k each)
Summoner Magic (63 - Lv.20 Cap) MUST*

I sub as a SMN/WHM, able to protect and aquaveil.
However during the battle, NEVER use any Cure spells, you will have TOO much AGRO.

----

Summon carbuncle near the top and the battle should begin with the avatar comming to you while carbuncle runs to attack.

NOTE:
(AoE attack has MORE damage at closer range)
- Searing Light damage DEPENDS on your mp
- When not using Searing Light, keep your distance.
- It takes time to summon carbuncle and use potions.
- Try not to use too much Cure Spells, they give you too much Agro (hate)

Always use macros.

--- Part 1

Let it attack till it has 80% health, then use Astral Flow *** 3 min SP ability.

I suggest RUN up to the avatar, use Searing Light. I ran up in case the avatar tries to attack you while carbuncle is doing searing light. This way carbuncle can do the most damge and have good amount of agro.

--- Part 2

Now, carbuncle should have 60% health left, hurry and run away. About 2 stair case bends or until carbuncle heath is near 40%.

Quickly use Super Ether,
Summon carbuncle again becuase it should be dead by this time. Also your you should be able to use searing light again (1 min has pass).

Wait for searing light and use it asap.
And run away to a safe distance.

--- Part 3

Repear part 2, and keep your distance.

If you are quick enough, you should be able to get off the thrid and final searing light.

Each one if you notice will take about 250 points which is about 1/3.
Remember you need to do searing light 3 times in 3 mins and you will win. Melee does not work well, so dont try it.

And you win!

--- Part 4

If you are here, you prob missed a searing light or the avatar was not close enough to do enough damage.

Do the same as before, use carbuncle to attack and run away. Use poison nails, and run away. As the avatar kills carbuncle you keep recasting at a distance. Use potions to heal your self.

I beat this Solo the 2nd try. It is similar to the method beastmasters use to battle. Direct melee is not good because you have low defence.

---

Macros:

/ma "Carbuncle" <me>
/pet "Attack"
/ja "Astral Flow"
/pet "Searing Light" <t>

you can use <t> or <bt>

It is obvious you have Never done this JumpStreet - the correct answer is: If you fail the mini trials you can not repeat that same trial till after midnight Japan time which is 11AM Eastern Standard time which is when the server resets this quest. Whether you win or lose you can move on to another trial for a different Avatar at anytime as long as you have the fame for it, but recommend you wait 2 hours for your Astral Flow to come back up.

NPC Verctissa

Walkthrough Mini Fork of Water is passed at the time of a Quest start.
After receiving, when Verctissa is spoken to again, I have you fly to Cloister of Tides.
Mini Fork of Water is traded with Water Protocrystal, and it goes into inside.
