Summary

Help apprehend the criminal suspect that has been sighted on La Theine Plateau.

Walkthrough

This quest requires a lot of running around, so if you have a BLM with Warp I, it would be a good idea to make that your sub-job.

To start things off you need to go to G-8 in Southern San d'Oria and talk to Deraquien. This starts a cutscene.

Afterwards head to just outside of Ordelle's Caves and talk to Narvecaint (F-7), another cutscene will occur. Now head back to Southern San d'Oria and talk to Deraquien again. After that cutscene, head to Chateau d'Oraguille and talk to Halver for another cutscene. After this is done, head back to Deraquien to watch another cutscene.

From there go talk to Phillone. She can be found inside one of the houses, (D-7), on your left just past the Tanner's Guild. Now go talk to Deraquien again. From there go through King Ranperre's Tomb to Jugner Forest, where there will be a ???. Examine it at any time between 18:00-4:00 and it will spawn two mobs: Giollemitte B Feroun and Skeleton Esquire. It is strongly recommended that you bring along a few level 50+ people to help with this quest. After you kill the mobs examine the ??? again for another cutscene.

Now go back to Southern San d'Oria and talk to Phillone again for another cutscene. Then go back to Ordelle's Caves caves and talk to Narvecaint again. Now return to Southern San d'Oria and talk to Phillone one last time to finish up the quest. Your reward is a Medieval Collar.

well last night i got aggrovated and decided i wanted to finish this quest after having it for nearly a month or so...so i asked around and actually got some lvl 50s and 60s to say they'd help, but the one got busy with bcnm and took her over an hour after she said she could be there grr..and the other two were unequiped so couldn't come...after waiting for so long and ppl wanting info on this i just said ***** and went to go do it myself...as i got there since i didn't wan't to run all this way and not explore before dieing i looked around and to my astonishment there be a lvl 72 sam. I walked up and asked him to help and he gladly did. Gave forewarning that i think there are two NMs and i'm not high enough lvl to do anything he said alright and i touched the ??? and suddenly got hit be the skeleton 2-3 hits...but i was fine i got only taken down to 1/4 HP and the sam voked it off me...

I kept watch and the sam did about 112-120 dmg on either and took about 65 dmg per attack so I'm assuming there is some sort of break defense onthese NMs...

btw..only lvl 25 XD

A pally friend of mine and I tried this and died after nearly killing the skelly. We came back later and this was our party setup: 41 Taru WHM/BLM, 40 Hume PLD/WAR, 42 Elvaan RDM/BLM, 41 Elvaan THF/NIN (me). We all have good equipment and used standard battle foods (kabobs, juices, pies). Now after dying doing this before, we knew that you have to kill the skelly first because of his extremely nasty black magic and because his physical defense is slightly lower than Feroun's. Our pld took the aggro from both of them while we worked on the skelly, and basically ignored Feroun. After killing the skelly, we went for Feroun and beat him. This was a pretty long battle but the way we won it was by wearing them down with very steady damage, and the awesome mana power of our whm who kept us alive while we did it.

EDIT: For those of you wondering whether it's worth 'the danger', the collar does not sell for that much, and is really only useful to paladins. We didn't do it for the item, but for fun and fame, and because we love killing bosses.
:D

Is the collar worth the dangers?
# Jul 08 2004 at 1:32 AM Rating: Decent
I haven't gone to the forest to fight the 2 mobs. But from all the posts below, they're surely tough.

But if you ever paid attention to the cutscenes, you'd notice that this quest introduced Viritual XXX (don't remember the name), a renowned hero who came from 200 years ago and the civil war. So this is actually a quest that let you understand the story's background. If you don't enjoy role-playing, you really shouldn't have played FFXI.

The reward Medieval Collar may be worth only 2k gils, but I bet this quest will lead you to more quests, and this collar may be exactly the item required.

TIPS
1. I was whm40/blm20 when I started this quest. And warp is truly a time-saving magic. Set the home point at West Gate, S. Sandy. Whenever you've talked with Halver at Chateau, just warp to find Deraquien and Phillone, or go to La Thiene Plateau for Narvecaint (take a chocobo or walk, as you like). Mobs in Ordelle's Caves didn't aggro me.
2. But mind you, you have to go through a goblin's place in the cave to get to Narvecaint, who's at the exit to La Thiene Plateau. You have to HEAD OUT. He's a knight. If you've ever done this Eco-warrior quest, the exit is right near the knight (Roja...) who offers you the lvl-capping omintment. Narvecaint is not the man hiding behind the stone, though he looks and sounds suspicious. (I got fooled myself and kept runnig around and shouting. lol)

DOUBTS
After you examine ??? between 18:00-4:00, the 2 mobs spawn. It brings 2 questions:

1. Must you defeat the mob before you examine ??? again? If not, we can just examine ??? twice and then warp.
2. What if you examine ??? between 4:01-17:59? No mobs? Or "You found nothing extra-ordinary here"?

I just finished the quest last night, as a whm40/blm20.
I didn't mean to do this quest at first. I just mean to go to Davoi through the Jugner Forest. I didn't know that the part of Forest that Ramperre's Tomb leads to is barred by the lake from other parts of the Forest.

The ??? is only a short way outside the exit of tomb to forest. Just tab, tab, tab, you'll spot it.

At that time, it's around 00:00, so I didn't examine it (too dangerous for a whm40). I ran around and found out that part of forest is isolated.

As I'd run a long way there, I tried to gather other players around to do this quest. I targeted the 2 players around and asked if they're doing this quest.

As I ran back, the mobs were already triggered by a high level pld.

There's no way to miss such a golden opportunity! Plus, I didn't know that this pld was so powerful. I'd like to support him, so I put my flag up and asked him to invite me.

Luckily, this pld was nice and invited me. I supported with balck magic. Fire, and banish did damage like 70-90. Still, there is no obvious drop in the mob's (shadow) hp bar. I filtered party's attack, so I can't tell how much damage the pld caussed. But this pld had very little drop in hp throughout the battle. He finished the shadow first, then he threw Cure IV on the skeleton. Very useful. And I must add that the mobs kept attacking the pld and never attacked me, even if the pld didn't use provoke.

So i finished the quest without difficulty. Thank you, little taru pld. ^^

And the mobs gave a revive tree root, which is needed for the paladin quest. Bring it to Balasiel in S. Sandy.

Afterwards, I stayed there healing for a while. Another whm60/blm?? came and triggered the mobs alone. Her hp dropped dramatically. So I threw her a Cure III. The shadown immediately rush to me, gave me a hit of 77 damage, additonal effect evasion down. Note that I had stoneskin at that time. I zoned at once. Yeah, remember to zone when the situation is critical.

I returned after rest (You know, whms always support one another). The whm managed to finish the mobs after a while, with more than half-hp.

So, the doubts are not yet cleared. Post a reply if you've tested.

ps. And whms, unite to do this quest so that you can heal one another. Lest, you'll risk being interrupted while casting cure's or warp.

cut-scenes
At the end, Roido and Michell... are still kept at chateau for trial. This quest has ended, but I suppose there'll be another quest to continue the story...
And it suggested Prince F??? escaped to Bastok 200 years ago, with help form Vijartal Caphieux, the Obsidiant Bolt.
Also mentioned the Ordelle's Caves resonances with the Perre XXX on the Scepter Royaulais, thus enabling time travel.
These long explanations by Vijartal and Halver would come in handy in future quests or mission, I'm sure.

EDIT: "cut-scenes" added, grammatical mistakes fixed.

Thief 59 / Ninja 26

won with 454 / 1030 HP

Once I killed the Skeleton the battle went much easier, and Utsusemi definately was the reason I won. Dimensional Death missed twice, luckily. Didn't need to use my two hour.

I triggered this quest today at lvl 29. Also proceeded to get my rear handed to me. didn't know what i was up against =). I do not believe this quest is char lvl related, although a mid to upper lvl char/party definately is a must for this quest. I believe it is fame related.

BTW, my fame is currently lvl 5 in Sandy.

I soloed both NMs with a 55 RDM. My modified DEX is 58 and I have Sword almost maxed, so there's perhaps a bit more melee power than the average RDM.

My experience was this: you'd be nuts not to kill the skeleton first... he dies quick and easy. Now for the shadow... he gives me the first half of his life bar for free, and then fights like a demon for the rest. I swear that the second half of his life bar has about 5 times as much HP as the first. He also has some bizarre defense ability (Invincible?) that I can't Dispel.

Anyway, I was at full HP and 80% MP when the shadow was halfway dead, and I was at 75% HP and near 0 MP when the shadow finally died. I think I would have won at level 54 and maybe 53, but below that I'm not sure.

I did this quest, as a Lv 56 PLD, along with a Lv 56 WHM, we were able to kill both NMs without much trouble. The Shadow NM is a PLD type, and will use Invincible.

This quest also grants the title: Obsidian Storm

A level 50 BLM, and a lvl 51 WHM could not kill him. Resisted every spell, including Cure 4s. We managed to get the NM down to 1/4 life. However this was after a full heal cause we had to zone after killing the first mob. I believe once you activate the ??? you have untill 4:00 before he'll vanish, so you can rezone and heal. Using both 2hrs we managed to kill the Skeleton, but the NM was only down by about 1/5. Good Luck.

Definately an interesting quest. Be prepared to spend a good chunk of your evening on this thing, but it's fun. A whole lot of cutscenes, a whole lot of plot and history is discussed. The payoff isn't great but I thought it was certainly worth the trouble.

As for the NM(s)... I was really intimidated before starting as there was a PT of 70+s standing around the '???' with me. They went off to fish a bit, and I triggered the things.

Not a terrible fight... soloed pretty easily @ lvl57, and got no exp from either kill, meaning the NM (shadow) is probably ~lvl45 (best guess), and the skeleton weaker than that. Each seemed to have about the same HP, but the skeleton doesn't hit very hard. Probably safe to solo this at lvl50, and safe in a group of high 30s and up. The NM will use invincible @ ~25% hp, and then dimentional death when it wears off, so if you're trying this at a lower level keep your tank well-healed (the special attack managed to bop me for ~250 at lvl57 with a 300+ defense).

As for whoever submitted this originally, I'm disgusted that they would just copy/paste the engrish from another site or a JP site.
Many thanks to Pikko for making it understandable now ^^ /hurray

As I said, not a great payout, but soooo much story it was a lot of fun to work through for a few hours.

Please don't be discouraged. We received multiple walkthroughs of this quest and whoever edited it first put that one that was there through. I've since edited from the *3* that I received and changed it to the above.

Actually, i have done that run easily through the tomb to jugner many times since about level 25, I'm sure, and maybe earlier than that.. in fact, it was so long ago, I hardly remember. So I'm wondering, is it the same place I go? I end up at the Jugner Lake, with no exit (for fishing purposes). Is there another path to another part of Jugner?

If there is not, then I have to add, this is not a level 50 area. Anyone who is having trouble at level 30 has taken the wrong path I think.

Three of us (level ~40) just completed this quest. We didn't have a lot of trouble with the NM's (though it would have been much more difficult without the 42 WHM).

When travelling through King Ranperre's Tomb, everything is 'too worthwhile' to us (we never got aggro'd). To get to the ??? in Jungar, just stay on the first area of King Ranperre's Tomb. Do not go "under the tomb" (that place killed me yesterday, when I acidentally went there).

This quest took us a few hours to complete (from start to finish >2 hours at least)....and the whm was teleporting us back and forth to Holla a few times too.

Because of the large amounts of information and talking done in this quest, I think that it has been one of the more entertaining quests I've done so far.

English translation of the Instructions above:
0. Every time (almost every time?) you talk to an NPC in this quest, you get a cutscene. This quest has the most exposition I've ever seen in a quest.
1. Talk to Deraquien in Southern San d'Oria(G-8) to start the quest.
2. Talk to NPC (Narvecaint?) in La Theine Plateau(F-6). This is down the chasm to Ordelle's caves where all the "evacuation drill" NPC's are.
3. Talk to Deraquien in Southern San d'Oria again.
4. Talk to Halver in Chateau d'Oraguille. He is just inside the Chateau entrance room.
5. Talk to Deraquien in Southern San d'Oria again.
6. Talk to Phillone in Southern San d'Oria(D-7). She is in the house to the west of the Leathercraft guild.
7. Talk to Deraquien in Southern San d'Oria.
8. Go through King Ranperres Tomb to Jungar Forest. Do not go "under the tomb"...just follow the map (map obtained by another quest in San'Doria Exit the gambler)
9. Target the ??? in Jugner Forest (F-5) between 18:00 to 04:00 to spawn the Knight and Skeleton. The Knight is the harder monster to kill.
10. Since Giollemitte B Feroun (Shadow) and Skeleton Esquire (Skeleton) come out.
11. Once you've defeated them both, target the ???to see another scene.
12. Talk to Phillone in Southern San d'Oria(D-7).
13. If Narvecaint in the Ordelles Caves entrance of La Theine Plateau (F-6).
14. Talk to Phillone in Southern San d'Oria(D-7).
15. End

regarding fame for this quest: I don't have much more than Holla-level fame, though I'm not sure exactly which fame level I am at.

Thank god for attentive administrators.

With the edits this quest description is finally understandable.

My initial estimate of level 50 to survive ranperre's tomb through to Jugner was overwrought. I reckon a party in its 30s can survive it. But the NM fight is probably designed for characters who have hit 40 or above. Just watch out for the Knight Crabs when you enter Jugner. If you or another party kills them all, King Arthro will spawn and start killing the unprepared.
