Summary

Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Sin Hunting - RNG AF1 and activated Fire and Brimstone - RNG AF2 before you can start this quest.

First, go to Upper Jeuno and speak to Guslam at the armor shop. A cutscene will occur and he'll say that there's a rumor that Borghertz's gloves were somewhere in Garlaige Citadel.

Next, you need a coffer key from Garlaige Citadel. Keys drop from enemies such as vault weapons, over weapons, Hellmines, Magic Jugs, Fallen Mages and Fallen Majors.

After obtaining a key, find and open a treasure coffer to retrieve a key item, Borghertz's old gauntlets. All of the coffer spawn points are behind banishing gates, which require a total of four people to open (each person stands on a switch to open the gates) -- the gates may also be bypassed using Garlaige Citadel (S) and the Sparkling Light mini-quests. Treasure coffers spawn behind Banishing Gate #3 at G-6, I-5 and I-7. Behind Banishing Gate #2, coffers spawn at G-8, H-8 and I-7. You can be any job when you open this coffer.

Go back to Guslam. He'll tell you to ask Yin Pocanakhu in the Tenshedo in Lower Jeuno about the whereabouts of Borghertz's old toolbox. Give Yin Pocanakhu 1000 gil, and she'll tell you the toolbox is near the Duty Free shop in Port Jeuno.

Examine the ??? in Port Jeuno between the Duty-free Shop and the auction house. A cutscene will occur and Borghertz will appear. He instructs you he needs Shadow Flames from Castle Zvahl Baileys to repair the gauntlets.

Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and examine the torches at F-8. An NM Bomb, Dark Spark, will spawn. Kill Dark Spark and then examine the torch again (make sure its the same torch, or else Dark Spark will reappear) to receive the Shadow Flames (key item).

Go back to Port Jeuno and examine the toolbox again to receive your Hunter's Bracers.

Can THF pick coffer instead?
# Jan 06 2009 at 12:53 PM Rating: Decent
Since everyone asks the same damned questions, let's sum it up. You only have to be lvl 50 rng, have activated (completion not mandatory) Fire and Brimstone, and have completed Sin Hunting (obviously). Now, what I want to know is, can I just pick the damned coffer instead of farm this f*cking key for the 6th time?

You Have To complete Fire and Brimstone before starting this quest, dont know why you do AF3 before AF2....
..
# Oct 23 2008 at 12:58 PM Rating: Decent
You don't have to complete Fire and Brimstone to do this one, you just have to start it.

These gloves dont stack up to other stuff thats available(as is the case with the majority of AF) but it is nice for people who have more than one job 50+ to be able to store armor. Personally, I'd have a safe full of random AF if this option wasnt available. Kinda makes you wonder about the guy that beat Maat with all jobs... How in the hell did he keep all that armor without storage O.o
Refresh of info
# Jan 06 2006 at 6:08 PM Rating: Decent
Ok just as a refresher of the info here. Bare min requirements are. >>
You have to be lvl 51, you must HAVE the beret quest at least started, last but not least you gota have completed RNG AF1 Sniping Bow to recive either of the above.
If you meet all of the above and still cant get the quest its because you started it with another job and never finished. You must complete that before you can start another AF hands quest.

Yea, just a casual note that no one has seemed to post here. If this is your second AF-Hands quest, you don't need to pay the npc an additional 10k to find the box.

Yea, it sounds stupid and all, but it wasnt posted anywhere. Plus, it made my day (woo).

u don't have to have the beret quest completed, however u must have already accepted it. Once beret quest is open, then Guslam will give u this mission.

Please double check that. I have both quest open now, at the same time. None of them completed.
And if you think about it. It would be pretty stupid that you had to complete the level 54 piece, before you could start the level 52 piece.
wait til 75?

I personally know more than one RNG who waited til 75 to get this baby @_@ lol I know it's a little extreme but honestly... the gloves kinda suck, people go from Noct +1 to like Seryu's Kote (maybe there was something else in between like good RSE ^^;) Meh well as for me, Garilage Coffer? I'm not up for it -_-. I don't suggest you put this high on your priority list unless you REALLY like your shadowbind. I'm @57 trying to get body done and I think my shadowbind works just fine ^^. Anyway just a thought, for the work involved I don't think it's worth it to try kill darkspark at lvl 50 or 52 to get these gloves, just wait til 60 or when you have a friend who wants a garilage key + coffer and go hunt it down with them.
RE: wait til 75?
# Nov 14 2005 at 3:24 PM Rating: Decent
its very true, these gloves offer nothing to a rng in an xp pt. they are completly useless to a rng except when you need to shadowbind hnm at endgame, and even then the enhance makes bind last an extra 15 sec and nothing else.
iv been 75 rng for many months, and just now got these cause i need af quests for my sam. for something useless like these its better to wait till 75 rng, when you can solo the key, open coffer with no aggro, and probally even solo DS if you have some skill.

Question...
# Apr 06 2005 at 10:21 PM Rating: Decent
To get the key item "Some Old Gauntlets" from the chest do you have to be RNG or can you be any job? I already started RNG AF 2 mission and have done the Dark Spark battle before with my DRK. SO just wondering if i can go as my DRK to open the chest...same question with killing Dark Spark...Can i get the flames?

thanks

For AF hands with ANY job, as long as you have the quest activated (check your Jueno quest log), you can open the coffer chest, kill dark spark, get the flames and muck around with the old toolbox as ANY job you please and still complete the AF quest.

Note this does not apply for the 2 other coffer hunting AF quests. Those require you to open the coffer chest with the job you're hunting AF for, else you'd just get regular treasure.

Actually, I received the quest for the gloves after I activated the hat quest but before I finished the hat quest.

After I had talked to the Mithra Chieftaness I was waiting in Jeuno for my mage friend. While waiting, I decided to check in on Guslam. He started talking about Borghertz and how his gloves might be in Garliage Citadel. I checked my quest log and Borghertz Chasing Hands was under the Current Quests for Jeuno.

On a side note, I also activated G2 when talking to Maat. I was a 53 rng at the time and I thought you had to be 55 to activate that limit break. Oh well, learn something new everyday. ^^
can't sell
# Oct 04 2004 at 2:43 AM Rating: Decent
rare ex gear is non-sellable, can't put it up in auction and vendors wont buy it either

the reason AF quests are repeatable is because if you throw it out on purpose (why i have no idea) you can do the quest again and get the item back. oh yeah AF1s drop in Dynamis too =p
der!!
# Sep 26 2004 at 6:59 PM Rating: Decent

I can confirm that you can sell some RA/EX items. One in particular is the Rampaging Horn (dropped from Rampaging Ram NM). The Rampaging Horn will will 900+ gil from NPC vendors, although I am saving mine until I get the other horn.

Hold up (Hot Shot), you can sell some rare/ex items to NPCs. This does not include any of the AF armor. They don't want people repeating the AF quests for money (creating unneccesary competition for the people that actually need/want the armor).
Just in case you're wondering why this won't activate...

I had a wierd problem when trying to get this quest activated... I was level 50, had gotten my sniping bow and had promptly thrown it away, and stupid Guslam kept saying 'omg go to the counter for your itamz kplzthx noob'.

The solution, if you're in a similar situation as me, is to trek over to Windy and start your AF2 quest; then Guslam gives you the AF4 quest.

all AF is Rare/Ex. You can't sell it. You can't have more than one at a time. They're merely trying to get it to you that this quest is used to obtain the AF, so you may repeat it WITH DIFFERENT JOBS to obtain DIFFERENT JOB'S AF.
RE: -.- )
# Feb 15 2005 at 2:56 PM Rating: Decent
Actually, that is wrong. It is repeatable because you can drop the gloves and get them again doing this quest over.
Repeatable
# Jul 20 2004 at 11:51 AM Rating: Decent
Ok Repetable so if you drop them you can get them re issued. Say I dropped my AF1 Bow. And I did... and wanted it back. (No Idea why) I could.
AF Bow

The AF bow is good for farming low lv mobs due to it's lower delay. So if you are killing them with one hit on either bow (AF or the one you get xp with), it why not use the one with lower delay?
RE: AF Bow
# Nov 21 2004 at 7:08 PM Rating: Default
Use the Loxley Bow (R/Ex LvL 57) if you want a low delay bow, the Sniping Bow does suck and there is NO good use for it.
Repeatable
# Jul 17 2004 at 7:51 PM Rating: Default
This quest is repeatable because every job's AF gloves are obtained through completing this quest. If you do this quest to get your THF AF gloves, you can "repeat" the quest as a RNG to get your RNG AF gloves.

I hope this makes sense to you. {I have plans.} {See you again.}
rare/ex?
# Jul 13 2004 at 5:36 PM Rating: Decent
well thats what it says, but arent all af gear rare ex? you couldnt get 2, and you cant sell them so whats the point?
repeatable?!?!?
# Jul 13 2004 at 3:06 PM Rating: Default
is this relaly repeatable?? so i could conceivably get an extra pair of gloves to sell??
Hmmm.
# Nov 11 2004 at 11:59 AM Rating: Decent

You can't have two of the same items if they are Rare. You can't sell AF. If you were to throw the gloves away, you could repeat the quest to get them again.
