Summary

Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed The Puppet Master - SMN AF1 and have activated Class Reunion - SMN AF2 before you can get this quest.

First, go to Upper Jeuno and speak to Guslam at the armor shop. A cutscene will occur and he'll say that there's a rumor that Borghertz's gloves were somewhere in Sea Serpent Grotto.

Head to Sea Serpent Grotto and find a Grotto coffer key. The mobs Blubber Eyes, Bog Sahagin, Marsh Sahagin, Razorjaw Pugil, Rock Crab and Swamp Sahagin drop the keys.

Next, find the treasure coffer. To do this, first head to H-11 and examine the ??? on the wall. Continue to examine the ??? until you see the message about mythril shavings. Then, trade your Mythril Beastcoin to the ???, and a door will open. Go through this door to proceed to the next map. In this area, coffer chests can spawn at H-7, I-9, H-8, G-6, F-6, G-10, F-9, D-9 and E-11.

Trade your key to the coffer to receive the key item Some Old Gauntlets.

After you received the old gauntlets, return to Guslam. He will say the gauntlets are work of Borghertz, but he cannot repair them.

You then have to go speak to Yin Pocanakhu in the Tenshodo shop (need to have completed "Tenshodo Incite" quest before you can gain entrance) in Lower Jeuno who talks about a toolbox that won't open. You have to pay her 1000 gil to tell you where the toolbox is at.

Once you pay her, she then tells you she left the toolbox on top of a crate outside of the Duty-Free shop in Port Jeuno and that you can have it.

When you examine the ???, a cutscene happens and Borghertz appears and asks that you bring him some "shadow flames" from Castle Zvahl. Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and examine the torch at (F-8). A NM bomb by name of Dark Spark will appear. Kill it and examine the torch a second time to get the key item "Shadow Flames".

After you have received the shadow flames return to Jeuno and re-examine the ??? outside of the Duty-Free to get your Evoker's Bracers.

Actual location of mobs

I fought all of mobs mentioned above for 3 hours and no drop. Can someone that has done this quest maybe post what location they got the drop? That would be Helpful. You can google the map for this place and find all coffer locations and they are pretty deep into SSG. I just need to know if there are special conditions in which to get grotto coffer key to drop.

I'm 63 SMN now, but when I came to these boards for advice on the MITTS themselves, all I got was people whining about the coffer >.0;;

Now that I have them, I'd like to know what the
"Occasionally converts damage taken of avatar element to MP." Means. Does it mean that the damage I take is taken from my avatars MP? or the damage my avatar takes is taken from their MP? or the damage they take they gain that ammount of MP?

dont know if anyone replied to this yet but according to what I see avators dont have mp. According to post that were posted on the forum for the hands themselves if a fire spell was to be casted on Ifrit that damage will be converted to mp given to you. I am sorry that this is late so you might have found this information out already but I didnt see any response to what you asked so I thought it would be nice to post something in response.

Alright... Lets say... you pick Ifrit... because he's my favorite. you throw up ifrit and then you got the bracers on. lets see your in ballista and the BLM uses Firaga3 on ur Avatar... because Ifrits Element is fire... with the bracers on. you MIGHT get the amount of damage Ifrit takes of fire damage as MP

Firaga III
Ifrit Takes 382 Damage
and your MP MIGHT, jump 382 Points if this "Occasionally" is activated
Typo?

You must have completed SNM AF1 and at least started Class Reunion, SMN AF2, to start this quest.
This is SMN AF Gloves Thread, not WHM AF Gloves.
# Nov 11 2005 at 12:11 PM Rating: Excellent
Two simple points I'm making here.
1: THIS thread is for SUMMONER AF GLOVES. There are other threads named "Borghertz's <...> Hands". For SMN, the 'old gauntlets' are in the Sea Serpent Grotto coffer.

2: When you actually do have the quest and you dont have another gloves quest active... You can open the SSG coffer as any job you want.
REASON: Because this coffer does not grant you AF. This coffer gives you a key item which is only part of the quest for the AF Gloves. Uggalepih and Toraimarai Coffers directly give you a piece of SMN AF, so SE makes you be SMN Main to get SMN AF.
SSG Coffer.. no AF, no need to be SMN main.

Maybe a dumb question
# Nov 11 2005 at 6:34 AM Rating: Decent
Okay, so I see the debate here and it sparked a thought. Let's say Bob had an old AF hands quest flagged and forgot. Let's now say out of frustration he pops a coffer as SMN in the area where his previous quest was flagged. Now, if he took the key item old gauntlets and kills Dark Spark and finishes the quest as a SMN, will Bob get the SMN AF or the previous flagged quest's AF?

Edit: I did this quest about a month ago. It was my first job high enough to get AF armor and my key/coffer was indeed in the Sea Serpent Grotto. Not sure if it matters, but I already had a map from opening a chest (not a coffer).

I think it works like this.

Suppose you activated DRG AF hands, but never got the coffer for the old gauntlets. After a while, you gave up on drg, because party invites were few and far between, and smn is way cooler anyways.

You get your butt to 50SMN, activate (heck, maybe you even complete!) the Leggings quest. You cannot activate the Hands quest again until you complete the DRG quest. If you get a SSG coffer key and use it...you will get the usual crap (gil, maybe a gem), not the key item.

You must get the DRG old gauntlets, and that means a trip to Boyahda (for what it's worth, probably the easiest coffer in the game), and then another to Castle Zvahl.

Even if you change your job class to that of your desired AF, if you have a previous coffer quest flagged, you will still get the gloves from that job.

So in other words, if Bob went as a Monk, started the gloves quest, forgot about it, came back a few months later as a Summoner and gets a SSG Coffer drop, does Dark Spark as a SMN and returns with the old gauntlets... he would still get the Monk AF, and would have to start again.

(I only chose MNK randomly, I don't think you can even get MNK af is SSG lol)

wait, so does that mean that if you were lets say SMN, you started the SMN AF glove quest, and then swiched to say DRG which was your main, and went and got the coffer key and the glvoes from there (because its way easier to get and you decide to be a slacker) would you be able to kill darkspark and get SMN gloves still???

Yea, just a casual note that no one has seemed to post here. If this is your second AF-Hands quest, you don't need to pay the npc an additional 10k to find the box.

Yea, it sounds stupid and all, but it wasnt posted anywhere. Plus, it made my day (woo).

This is just like any other quested AF

Any QUESTED af for smn you activate as SMN then use your higher lvl job (if you have one) to complete it

Seeing as you quest this, you talk to gulsam with SMN, get everything done quest wise but the coffer part, then switch to higher lvl job and go get key AND coffer

Though a few months after the original question, to restate: you can ONLY have one Hand AF flagged at ANY time. This means that, as in the case of the original question, you need to finish unfinished hand AF quests for whatever job you have them opened for. A friend of mine had SAM flagged and wanted NIN; he had to do SAM hands first. Another one had THF flagged and wanted RNG; same case, THF first.

No you dont. all thats needed is to be Summoner when you glag the quest. you can be Any other job you want when you pop the coffer

# Sep 22 2005 at 5:39 AM Rating: Decent
Actually you have to be main SMN to pop a coffer involving SMN. Same for every job. Otherwise I would have gladly went as WHM75 to pop my THF coffers.

WRONG. Hands is a quest coffer, so you can be any other job. That's why most of the people have problems opening a coffer with the job they need while they had another job's hand AF quest...

Last night, after speaking to guslam (and not taking note of what he said) myself and a few 65 friends of mine headed out to sea serpents grotto to get me my coffer key, and then the coffer, dark spark and my gloves.

It took quite a while, but we finally got a key from a crab past the mithril gate. I turn the corner, spot a coffer and reach for my key.

Now this is where the fairy tale ends. MUCH to my dismay instead of recieving the old gloves, i got a map of the grotto >.<

At this everyone decided to call it a night, which i really dont blame them for. But i decided to head back to guslam and find out what was going on. When i speak to him (as my smn) he reminds me of my whm af gloves quest.

Now this is just plain stupid. i mean sure, i havent finished my whm af and if i can help it, i dont want to. Even though i have gotten af1-1 for smn and af1-2 i cant activate the quest for the gloves. Without that quest activated i REALLY dont want to open a coffer in toraimori canal or uggilpih to recieve some crappy consolation prize.

If anyone knows anything about this matter, please let me know, cuz if it means that you cant get a new quest from guslam till you finish the last one, i guess i'll have to put the red and whites back on and brave beadeaux once again (after 10hours of no drop last time >.<)
RE: OMGWTFBBQ
# Oct 20 2004 at 2:24 PM Rating: Decent
More than likely you'll have to finish your whm af runs, or did you actually pop the coffer as a SMN main ? IF the smn wasn't your main you wouldn't get credit for that pop.
