Summary

The Temple of Uggalepih is an ancient place where it is said that evil deities were once worshipped. Gilgamesh has ordered you to travel there and search out a strange, old hermit.

Walkthrough

There are a few quests you might have to do before you can do this mission.

When you kill Tonberries, the Tonberry hate will accumulate. The damage of a weapon skill used by the tonberries is proportional to the Tonberry hate. Only those party members who damage the tonberry will accumulate hate. Because the BCNM battle is against Tonberries, you should find out if any of your party members has been killing Tonberries. If so, they should reset their Tonberry hate. To save time, ask anyone needing to do this to do it before you start doing the mission.

To do this, first go to I-8 in Norg and talk to Magephaud. Give her 3 gold beastcoins (about 8-10k each) and she'll give you a key that will open a hidden door to reset Tonberry hate. However, unless you have killed tonberries before, you cannot trade gold beastcoins to her and get the key. After that, head to F-11 in the Temple of Uggalepih. One of the walls in the middle can be opened with the key from Magephaud. Inside there will be a Tonberry Priest that will reset hate for a price. This is not necessary, especially for mages who heal only.

At least one person will need a paintbrush of souls to get to the Den of Rancor. Go to the Temple of Uggalepih and fight Tonberry Cutters until they drop "an Uggalepih key". Tonberry Cutters can be found a little further in from the entrance.

To get into the Sacrificial Chamber in the Den of Rancor you will need to obtain 4 unlit lanterns which will help open the gate (or you could bring nice friends that kept their lanterns). The lanterns are dropped by Tonberry Maledictors. There are a lot of spots to find them. From the main entrance of Temple of Uggalepih, head to J-7 and open the secret door, exit at K-3 to Yhoator Jungle. Go to another entrance at the right side of K-9 in Yhoator Jungle. Once in the temple, go to H-7. There should be 2-3 Tonberry Maledictors there. Once you have got the Uggalepih key and 4 unlit lanterns, go back to the main entrance and head to F-7 on the first map to get the paintbrush.

Now exit at F-5 to enter Yhoator Jungle and enter the temple at H-11. Once in the temple, head to I-10 and defeat the Temple Guardian. Make sure to prevent the Temple Guardian from using Meltdown ability by using stun because it can kill the whole party. After you kill the Temple Guardian, the door in front will open. Once it is open, head to J-7 and keep going further. There'll be a room with a bunch of paintings and 2 with just the frame. Go to the frame that you have to face south to, and use the paintbrush. It will take a couple minutes to open the door so I recommend clearing out this room. Once the door is open run in and zone to Den of Rancor.

Invisible/Sneak everyone in the party and go to E-5. Clear the room and have people with the unlit lanterns touch the Altar of Rancor to get a Rancor Flame. Once that is done, head to I-5 which will go to another map. On the second map, go to E-5. It is recommended to clear this room because you can't light the lanterns while getting hit. Have each person with the Rancor Flame light the four lanterns to open the door. You will still have the Rancor Flame, in case you need to help other people.

After zoning into the Sacrifical Chamber, go inside the door for the BC fight. There are 3 Tonberry NMs and the order in which to kill them:

1 - Grav'iton (THF)
2 - Molyb'iton (BLM)
3 - Tungs'iton (SMN) + elemental pet

It is very difficult, if possible at all, to sleep the THF. So you can kill the THF first while you silence and/or sleep the BLM and SMN. Ignore the pet and concentrate on the SMN as it will disappear once the SMN is dead.

When you are done, you will get a cutscene and will exit from a different gate than the one you went in. Take this into consideration if you have more than 6 people needing to do this battle.

President's post is exactly right except for one thing.

The emote says something like "Your paintbrush starts to twitch". You wait a minute after that, then hit enter. Then go in.

Also important to note, if you do not have 4 lanterns, you can still do this, we just had someone go back for another flame.
A couple things
# Apr 24 2005 at 9:36 AM Rating: Decent
You only need 4 lanterns for the entire alliance, and one paintbrush for the entire alliance. We wasted our time looking for more unlit lanterns and keys just to find out everyone could enter at once.

It's a good idea to have two tanks while doing this, as Throat Stab brought me and the other tank (too bad, Chee) to about 100 hp. The usually did 20-40 dmg to me but if it goes unnoticed i couldve been down fast.

As for the BCNM fight, we had planned to do this with 2 parties but 1 person didnt show up, 1 left, and 2 d/c and never came back. So we used a daring strategy. Our first setup was PLD PLD RDM WHM SMN WAR. We had a DRK and THF waiting outside. SO we beat up the last tonberry til it was nearly dead (after Chee got nailed with Grudge for 3000+ dmg) and the RDM WHM SMN and WAR exited the battlefield. After me and the WAR were done, the four who had left found they could re-enter the battle with a new party.

re: The Paintbrush

You can type what you want in party chat. You can type what you want in lschat. You can even type anything you want in /say, type to your heart's content.

To use the Paintbrush correctly you must examine the empty frame on the eastern wall after checking out the other objects in the room. The paintbrush will jump up and start to paint.

Feel free to talk to your friends, but *do not hit Enter* to scroll to the next line of text! You must stand there at that prompt for ~30 seconds of real world time before you can finish your painting. After 30 seconds have passed, hit Enter to scroll the text; your painting will be complete.

If you go too soon, you will not be able to fill the canvas, and the secret door will not open.
This mission is hard.

To clear things up right off the bat.

You need FOUR Unlit Lanters per group.
You need ONE Uggalepih key per group.

ALL members of the group need to have the Sacrifical Chamber Key (Key Item)obtained by completing ZM3. Unless you have done the mission before.

Use the maps located at www.ffxi-atlas.com as they are the best maps around and they are marked and in English.

TRAVELING in these areas is the hardest. Sneak and Invis is great. But get a party that is 65+ with a couple of high levels and you can wonder about slaughtering things in your path and you won't have to worry about getting killed because someones sneak wore. This will make this mission about two hours shorter and will save many lives.

Step one is to get the Uggalepih key. You NEED one Uggalepih key per groug. To get the key enter Temple of Uggy through the main entrance from Yhoater jungle. This puts you in the temple at I-6. Look at the map on ffxi-atlas, youll be at the map on the top right corner at the entrance marked #1. Follow the halls South, then East, then South again and the hall will open up into a room. This will be the first room to camp Tonberry Cutters in. The second room to camp them in is to the South West corner of the first room. Tonberry Cutters drop the Uggalepih key that you need (If you ever should want to return to the Den of Rancor which you will see alter you will need to obtain a Uggalepih key, but this trip will be enough for most people).

WHEN YOU ARE KILLING TONBERRYS: An important thing to remember is that Tonberrys all have an attack that is based on Hate. If you do damage to a Tonberry at anytime, you have a tad of hate. So unless you are killing a Tonberry that drops something you need, Call for help on it. Doing so will make it so you do not take any hate.

After you get a Uggalepih key from Tonberry cutters go to the North East corner of the First Tonberry room. Enter the hallway you came from before and head North. At J-7 there will be a a spot on the wall to the North that you can target. Open the wall and move in. Follow the hallways the only way you can go untill you zone back into Yhaot Jungle.

Once here you should search the outside area looking for Tonberry Malidictors. They drop the Unlit Lantern that you need. You will need FOUR per group. The second place they drop, and the best IMO is, from the area you are at now, there are a couple places that zone back into Temple of Uggy, find the one that put you in at F-7. This will drop you in at the bottom left map on ffxi-atlas.com. Once in, head north and to the east arund a little corner and then head east a short distance untill you reach a tunnel to the South. Head south to a room with a big square in the center, go to the east and take the eastern hallway youll come to a three way intersection at that point, go north. Youll go up some stairs where you have to turn east. Camp at the bend in the stairs and pull Tonberry Malidictors from the surrounding area. Getting all the Lanters will involves taking turns camping at this spot and back outside from where you came from.

When you get four, exit the Temple of Uggy, fall of the ledge from that outdoor area, use Escape, use Tele-Yhaot. Whatever, just get back to the main entrance to the temple once you get all four unlit Lanters.

NOTE ON LANTERNS: If you have six people going you need four lanterns. If you have 12 or 18 people going, you will still need just four unlit lanters. But if you do this and one group loses, it till be tough to raise them without having four unlit lanters outside of the the losing group. In other words, you better have Reraise up for the WHM if you choose to skimp on lanterns. If not, the losing group will probably be HPing and coming back through this hell hole again.

Anyway once your back at the main entrance it is time to get a Paintbrush of Souls. Only the person who has the Uggalepih key can get the Painbrush. If you are looking at ffxi-atlas.com, and you better hope you are, head for the dot labled Paint Brush Room. From the entrance starting at I-6 head south, east, south, south west, south, west, and this will put you at the western wall of the second room where you were camping Tonberry Cutters. From that wall there is a north and a south exit, head north and then west through the hallways. You will reach an intersection. Go south. It will open into a larger room. For ease, clear the room, leave none alive. In the north west corner of this room there is a targetable door. MEMBERS WITH THE Uggalepih key should trade it to the door. You will enter into a room. Inside the room, while the group waits outside, target and examine the books on the walls untill you obtain a Rusty Key. Once you do that, trade the Rusty key to the box on the table. You will obtain a key item called Paintbrush of souls. Do not leave the room before obtaining the brush or you will be going back to farm another Uggalepih key.

Once you get it, exit the room and meet back up with the rest of the group. Head back out of the large room you cleared and back up the tunnel you came from only instead of going east, head north and follow the tunnel to a zone into Yhaoter Jungle.

Loop around and find the zone back into Temple of Uggy. The correct zone puts you in at F-5. The top right map on ffxi-atlas.com. Zone in and youll see the three way intersection in front of you. Head to the west. Then go south down some steps and you will see a gate. The highest level member should open the gate so the lower members don't have to drop invis.

After the gate head south. You will reach a spot in the hallway where is forks and goes around a block in the center of the room, just fork around the block and keep heading south. You will come to a three way intersection. Stop here and rest to full. To the east, by now you can probably target two things. The Granite door and the Temple Gaurdian. The Gaurdian is a giant robot NM you need to kill. Upon his death the granite door will open. Hes not too hard. Checks EM to a lvl 65. Beat him down and go through the door and wait right on the other side. Hug the left wall of this room and head to the north east corner. Go into the hallway and follow it up to the next granite door.

This is the room where you will use the Paintbrush of souls. Pop the door and move in. THERE ARE a lot of Tonberrys in here. Make a swift death of them all. The room must be clear. Once clear, everyone but the paintbrush holder should wait in the northeast corner of the room for a secret door to open.

The paintbrush of souls holder should examine all the paintings the the room. Examing the center one on the eastern wall LAST. Stand there and examine it but dont move or type. An emote will appear saying "You stand up straight and start to paint" or something blah blah blah. Just sit there after the emote for about a minute without pressing buttons. After some waiting, press enter to move on and hopefully after a flash of light it will say "Nothing Happens." That means the door is open. If this doesn't work for you, you either are not waiting long enough, you have to reexamine the other paintings, or you are waiting at the wrong time. This door may take a while to get it open.

From here after the door is open follow the path behind the door and zone into hell, Den of Rancor.

Once inside you will be at F-4 or E-4. On ffxi-atlas.com this is the top left map of Den of Rancor.

Now, you have to go capture a flame inside your unlit lanter. The whole group should sneak and invis up and hug the right wall for a little ways untill you come to a shrine that targets "Altar of Rancor." Once here, clear the room.

At this point, THE FOUR PEOPLE WITH UNLIT LANTERNS should examine the Altar and then trade the unlit lantern to it. You will recieve back a Flame of Rancor. You still have the unlit lanter, right now it is just called something else.

Once all four lanterns are lit and are now called Flame of Rancor, hug the left wall back out to the zone (for sake of ease). Then after everyone is out safely, head back into the Den of Rancor right where you came out and sneak and invis up. Now head in only this time follow the left wall. You will go through the large room at the end of the hallway and go up into a tunnel in the northeast corner. Inside this tunnel it will fork into a left and right. That the right and head east. You will loop around and down a path into a new map.

THIS IS NOT A ZONE. Just a new map. On ffxi-atlas.com you will now be on the top right map at the point marker "A." From here, recast sneak and invis and when ready, move out hugging the right wall. Stay on the right wall for a little ways untill you right a room with four pillars in the center with a gate behind the pillars. Head to the alcove in the west-most side of this room. Camp here to clear the room. This is a nasty room, lots of links and aggro. Clear it one at a time until there is nothing left.

Then the four people who had unlit lanterns who now of Flame of Rancor should head to the pillars while everyone else waits at the gate. Trade the Flame of rancor to the pillar and light the flames. When all four are lit the gate will open.

Once inside, follow the path down and you will zone into the sacraficial chamber. At the end of the hall you will find the BC. Break of the alliance if you have once and good luck in the fight.

Just remember, getting there is WAYYYYYyyyy harder than the fight.

Getting the Paintbrush

Just a quick note on actually getting the Paintbrush of Souls from the Ugg. Key.

1) Only the person with Key can enter the door at F-7.

2) Once inside, the player must examine the different books on the shelf to receive a Rusty Key.

3) Once the player has the Rusty Key, they need to open the coffer in the middle of the room on the table. Then they will receive the key item "Paintbrush of Souls".

4) DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM WITHOUT GETTING THE PAINTBRUSH. You cannot open the door from the inside to let others in. Once you open the door from the inside, you will automatically leave, and will lose the key.

Just some detail to flesh that out ^.^
Good luck people

Did it with :

NIN64
RDM63
WHM62
DRK65
SMN70
BLM65

Was really cake ! All you need is a GOOD blm to keep the smn-nm and the blm-nm asleep while you start killing THF. Get tons of oils and powders to get there, get a good BLM and the rest is really easy. Dont forget to start with THF-nm since he could resist the sleep pretty much

So... I just did this mission as a 58 rdm/blm. Pty set up was 2thf, 1blm, 1nin. (Yes we did BCNM with 5 ppl) the Ninja died only because he got nailed with Everyone's Rancor for 2300+ dmg by the thf. Blm kept SMN and BLM slept, I healed, it was a beautiful thing. We nailed it with no one (minus ninja that's already dead) even close to death.

I hate this mission. Anyhow, no rumored multiplier to Everyone's Rancor. BLM got nailed for 0 with it.

To get to altar of rancor, follow right wall all the way as soon as you zone into Den of Rancor from the Temple of Utsitwhosit. There's a turn first thing that takes you to (D-5) where I found it.

After that, follow the left wall to the 2nd tunnel on the left, take a right at the intersection, and follow the right wall in the large room you enter from the ramp going down.

This takes you directly to the sacrifical chamber zone.

If you get stuck past the gate, it -can- be opened from the inside so don't fret.

I know this because 11/12 made it and my lone self was slept outside of it ><

Anyhow, these directions posted to get there just caused headache.

if hte BLM got hit for 0 then wouldn't that have to mean that you guys had no built up hate?? i mean 0 multipled by ANYTHING is 0, so if he got hit for 0, the multiplier could be 1000x and he still would have been hit for 0. Unless what you meant was the idea that Everybody's Rancor was somehow based on the sum of hate of everyone in the alliance... but if everyone had reset their hate before leaving, then he could still be hit for 0. I didn't explain exactly the circumstances, but it would be sort of wierd if there were two different tonberry abilities which were actaully EXACTLY the same, but for some really wierd reason had the same name. i mean, that just done'st make any sense.

The DRG got hit for over 15k with it. =)

Main thing I can recommend is to make sure you do the quest to clear the hate from the tonberrys you have killed.
I was one-shotted for 1587 with full buffs and food defense in the BC battle.Smiley: oyvey
I will do this again after re-setting the tonberries hate.

Actually i went with 1 party, most level 60s and we did not clear hate and did fine. Only death was to the whm 60 who died to astral flow which we dont know how it did because HE HAD NO AVATAR OUT! We killed his smns and yet it still did major damage. We still owned the fight with 68 MNK 70 RDM 60 WHM 60 WAR 63 THF and 62 PLD. The monk used his 2 hour fighting aggro bats(didnt bring oils /sigh) so that wasnt even a factor in the fight. The Thf was very hard to hit which made me worry if i should have ate +acc food instead of a mere mithkabob but after he went down we pwned the other 2 so easy.

*Edit*
forgot to mention, whenever fighting tonberries, call for help unless you are farming lanterns or specific item. I learned this from a 75 rdm when i went to do Shiva and so the only tons who i had hate from were the ones i had to kill for my lantern. If you do this you wont have to spend the time and money reseting hate which is a pain in the *** and isnt worth it

This BC fight was so easy, but the problem is actually getting there. All the aggro on the way is insane. And wtf is with you melee ppl not taking your sneak/invis items! Stop being a burden! We had 5 ppl die in Rancor, but nobody died in the battle. All you need is ppl who arent stupid and you'll kick this mission in the mouth. Good luck! You'll probably need it. ^^

lol... sooo true.

Mages are teammates, not servants to players without MP. If you know you're entering an area where you will need to sneak/invis - and you know you will have to sneak around a lot there (like most missions or long quests, or an XP pt finding a good camp), please don't be cheap...

When the 'too cheap to buy stuff DRG/DRK/THF/whatever' has their invis drop because they hit the cancel button right after I had reapplied my own invis (to invis somebody) it is more than frustrating.

Luckily I am RDM so I can cast Refresh when my invis is down - but even so the MP gets depleted fast doing sneak/invis on the whole pt. Some people will get their sneak/invis (and will know where they need to go next) but will wait there until all are ready to go. The bad side effect of this is that their sneak/invis runs out right as they walk past a big bad whatever the hell the local mobs are. If you know where you are going, please start running there immediately after the mage sneaks/invises you - wait in a nice empty spot along the way for your next set of sneak/invis. Then there's less chance of it dropping right by an aggro type mob.

Mages have practice with sneak and invis of course - but the rest of the party needs to be conscious of the area they will be going to, and be prepared. Use some gil and keep emergency supplies with you. Can't afford it? Go farm or take up a craft or three.

Don't feel up to it? *shrug*

Edit: ranted a bit ^^ made it more readable

Lol, now lets change the situation a little bit, lets say: You didnt see a elemental and got aggroed, should the Tank voke off of you? or just let you died... If you think the way you said he probably should let you die. I dont aggree he has better chance to survive until somebody cast a escape or a tele. What if the tank dies trying to save your ***?

I think everybody should do what they can to help the party, and shut the pie hole if the are thinking about complaining. But in the Temple is good to have oils and powders (even the mages) because there are elementals all over the place.

That's my 2 cents

Hello 1 post sock...

It completely would depend on the situation. Indeed in many cases the most efficient thing to do (depending on which mage was getting aggro) would be to simply allow the mage to be killed (the rest of the pt not engaging) and wait for the ele to go away. Then Raise them - this of course if nobody could pop off Escape when the aggro happened.

But that does not change the simple fact that melee focused players do need to consider the buffs they get from the mages in their pt, and be prepared for bad situations. To realize that the mages will buff them every time possible - but when needing to sneak/invis through an entire zone it can be really challenging to have 1 or 2 mages do it (unlee you have 3 or 4 mages with sneak/invis in pt, then it's no biggie normally). Most meelee jobs don't have the MND (or int?) to keep sneak/invis up for long, while it will for a mage class. If you have your invis drop and you use powder, you have saved your pt 2 x mp cost of invis - and every bit counts in aggro situations. Plus you can continue immediately and will gain the best use of the sneak/invis on the rest of the pt - seconds can count.

I bring Echo Drops and Antidote when I pt almost every time just to that I'm never standing there silenced with full MP as the tank is getting blasted and the WHM is running out of MP; or to be poisoned and unable to rest (BLM sub != Poisona). I bring Prism/Silent when needed. I make sure I can contribute to the pt and not slow it down. That is the job of each and every player... Too many people think that as long as they have lots of ammo and food they're covered. Wrong.

Echo Drops - remedies silence: all mages, PLD, NIN should have a stack with them when PTing

Antidote - remedies poison: everybody should have a stack of this in any area where any mobs may do single or AoE poison. Is also lev 3 Alchemy recipe so anybody can make it cheaply if none is in AH.

Prism Powder - invisible effect: all players should bring a stack anytime they will be going into areas with EP or higher mobs that aggro by sight - may not have to use any, but good to be safe

Silent Oil - sneak effect: all players should bring a stack anytime they will be going into areas with EP or higher mobs that aggro by sound

Obviously it is the Mages job to help the pt get to where they need to go, but it is really hard for 1 or 2 mages to keep sneak/invis effect on everybody at once. If somebody's invis just dropped - and the mage just invised them, waited for cooldown, then invised themselves... to be immediately followed by one more person's invis dropping - it takes forever (and lots of MP) for the cooldown and 2 recasts. In that case it's clearly more efficient for the person that had invis drop simply take a powder and you all run to the next safe spot.

Edit: Ditto ^^

I'd like to state that this mission requires organization of the highest caliber. Your alliance has to be focused and know what they're doing. Or your party, whichever. If your alliance seems even slightly confused, abandon this mission, or consider using just your party. I went with the most unorganized group of people I have ever seen. 18 person alliance, three people got left behind, we made it to the BCNM, the other groups swiped half of our party to make up for the losses, and the rest of us? Eh, who cares. We had to end up begging for warps out, after I spend some 60,000 gil in supplies, wasted 6 hours of my night, and even lost 500 XP. I've even made six permanent enemies out of the ordeal. So please, go organized, or don't go. Thank you.

I absolutely agree. I feel 18 people is too many to attempt this mission. Go with atleast 2 people who know exactly what they're doing. I attempted this 3 times before beating it and our 75blm the last attempt died twice. I personally don't like babysitting other people on these missions, and I know others feel the same way. Pay attention and have a good leader and stay focused, no joking around or needless chat. Okay, I'm done preaching now.^^

went in in an 18 persona lliance. most of the melees didnt bring potions to sneak and invis the priks (the mages brought them and were handing them out all the time -_-)

Anyways we got wiped out he firstattempt into den of rancor. then we regrouped and formed pts again. 2 pts this time.

We got to the altar and 6 peeps died when the bombs agroed and exploded. and someone aso trained 4 dire bats to our asses. we got raise 2's and went on our way.

In the battle the other pt was the better of the two. cant remember there pt formation. Ours considted of the following.

WHM/BLM
PLD/WAR
THF/NIN
DRG/WHM
BLM/WHM
RDM/BLM

we went in sleepga 1'd there asses with an ele seal. the thef came and we took him. the others woke and the pld died then i died as hate went onto me. the rdm sleeped there asses.

I reraise 1'd myself and the pld got a raise 2. (It was the only way i could get up to sleepga them again to save the pt... took one for the team)

Anyways after 17 mins they were all dead. The thief from what we saw could not be sleeped.

We killed THF then the BLM then the SMN. we kicked ***. The drg was excellent. so was the thief.

Well we won. Me tanking (lvl 61 Ninja at the time since i delvled along the way). The rest of the group was anywhere from lvl 58-to i think one lvl70, with no blm. Anyway's to make along story short we all died once, after i fell: Throat stab (you can have this) SMN 2 hour (you can have this) death (you can have this). So whm reraised, then raised the rest of the party in enough time weakened where'd and we were able to finish the battle before the 30minutes expired. ^^ p.s. three more died after the raise frenzy. My advice don't go here with 12 ppl and then divide the 12 ppl into two group. Especailly if your going to get stuck in the gimped group. lol

simple..

63 PLD/WAR
63 PLD/WAR
63 DRK/WAR
63 WHM/BLM
63 BLM/WHM
63 THF/WAR

WHM sat as close to the gate as possible. Pulled Grav'iton (THF) pounded on it. Tungs'iton (SMN) and Molyb'iton (BLM) butted in and were slept. We all died after Grav'iton died and the other woke up. We waited for the remaining 2 tones to return to the corridor, our trusty WHM who was hidden earlier then raised II us. Pulled Tungs'iton one pally on main and one on the watery pet. Slept Molyb'iton who butted in again. Killed Tungs'iton and then with remaining strength killed Grav'iton. Pwned 20 minutes 22 seconds. New record for Bimarck ^^

Multiple altars

The thing that the guide FAILS to mention at all is that there are multiple alters that you can go to on different levels of the temple, and only the correct flame from the correct altar will light the lanterns.

So make sure you go to the correct altar first! It is close to the zone on the same level as hyou went in (E-5) on the top left map

Just did this

I just did ZM4 last night, and through the numerous /tells from people saying things like "Den of Rancor? What're you doing in that hellhole?" We got it done.

We had 2 escorts, a high leveled SAM and an RDM. Our PT was as follows:
65NIN
6?WHM
6?WHM
60BLM (me)
66BRD (Godsend)
65RNG

I was afraid of not having enough damage output, but man was I wrong.

First things first though, the trip there. (I was lucky to get into a group that already had their brush and lanterns) We ran into our first problem in the area after the den of rancor (I forgot the name). We were fighting a bomb, and we got a link. The first bomb started to blow, so I stunned it. We killed it, then the second started to blow. >_< Needless to say, I ended up face down. After getting raised we got to the room with 4 lanterns. We decided to clear the room, but ended up getting aggroed by the whole place. 4 bats and 2 tonberries. The NIN decided to takes the bats first while the BRD slept the others. Not a good idea. One of the tonberries woke up and nailed me with burst for about 3 points of damage over my max hp. The BRD died shortly after that, but by that time the battle was already over.

Now the actual battle. We followed the usual advice (THF, SMN, BLM in that order) And only ran into a few snags. The SMN had a water elemental that got a Flood through without me seeing >_>. We had figured that if we kept the elmental slept, we wouldn't have to worry about Astral Flow. Heh, wrong. Shiva popped out of nowhere and Diamond Dusted us, luckily, it only dealt 300ish to the mages (much less to the melee). After that it was smooth sailing, and the only deaths were before the actual BCNM fight. Good luck for all those trying to take it on!
LS Alliance

Our LS tackled ZM-4 the other night. We had four unlit lanterns already, but needed a paintbrush. Didn't take to long killing cutters to get one (learned that I cannot solo a Cutter :/). We ended up with three paintbrush while waiting for the alliance members to log-on/fill-up.

We did good getting through the temple and through racor except for the room right after Temple Guardian. Someone ran ahead and got tonberry aggo, which link most of the tonberries in the room. We killed them then aggroed the NM Doll that paces the room (we were able to take him out too), but we survived without any deaths.

The only deaths came when we went to light the lanterns. The bomb mob exploded wiping out four members (two who didn't need it and were coming along just to help out ;.;).

We made it to the Sacrificial Chamber without incident. Once there we broke alliance. Our party was:

67 Pld/War 67 Drg/War 68 Blm/???
70 Rdm/??? 63 Whm/Sum 64 Rdm/Blm (me)

Our Blm had just finished the Sleepaga II quest! So he went in and Sleepaga II-ed everything.

Then the Pld pulled the Thf (Graviton) to the hallway while the Blm and 70 Rdm slept the Blm, Sum, and Pet. Perfect Dodge sucked cuz the Pld and Drg were the only ones really damaging him (thank you lvl 3 SCs!) though I threw every DoT spell I had at him. Pld took an Everyone's Rancor that one-shotted him (second death of the night and he didn't even need zm-4). Drg tanked the last bit of the Thf while I healed. Whm Raised Pld. After the Thf was dead, we waited for weakness to wear, Blm and Rdm kept everything asleep.

Blm was easy. Kept him silenced the entire time. Did my DoT spells, Pld and Drg killed him quick.

The Sum did get off his 2-hr. He summoned Ramuh, but thankfully no one died. After some quick cures, Blm nuked the ???? outta the Sum and pet.

All three of our alliances made it through with some close calls.
Full Party

Let me make this clear, so there is NO confusion or ambiguity...... you can NOT have some people do this fight and then help another party afterwards. can NOT. if you go with 10 people, break the party into 5's. Don't expect a WHM or RDM to come back and join your party of 4. I fooking put 7 hours into hunting lanters, paintbrush, and getting to the chamber. i was in the 4 man team waiting outside for other party to finish, hoping we could get our BLM and RDM into our party. it put them back in the Temple, right next to zone of Yhutunga or whereever.
7 hours people. From start of ZM4 questing, to dying/deleveling as our party of 4 had no way back. Tried to teleport us out mid-fight, but i had aggro and spell got interupted. Could we have ported from the chamber area instead of fighting? sure.... but somehow that would have pissed me off more, not knowing if WHM/THF/PLD/DRG could beat fight. levels were 64-67.
another important point of this post, is that if you ever lead your LS / party into a lengthy quest, read all you can on it. alot of disgruntled LS members in my HNM LS now..... i'm one. /peace /out.....

Yes you can. People can come back in from the zone out, and you can open the door from the inside of the gate, no need to re-collect flame.

Unlit Lantern

I do not think that Tonberry Jinxers drop the rare/ex unlit lantern needed. After killing many of these I feel I have wasted time. The drop rate is not a "more common rate" as Soylentblue had stated. In fact, after killing tons and tons of Maledictors no unlit lantern either. Jinxers drop Tonberry Lantern which is not the rare/ex lantern needed. Hours and hours of time wasted and still no unlit lantern. Can't wait for tonight...errr....

Edit* The Jinxer did drop the unlint lantern. After many kills the previous night - we were rewarded with 2/2 drops last night. Zilart Missions are a pain in the a** to say the least, but I guess they don't want any idiot going to Sky.

Sounds like all 60+ Tonberry BLMs drop the Unlit Lantern; that's Maledictors (61-67) in Temple of Uggalepih, Jinxers (61-63) in Yhoator Jungle, and Imprecators (62-64) in Den of Rancor.

I can confirm that Tonberry Jinxers do actually drop the unlit lantern. The droprate seems to be rather random though. When I camped them the first time I got two lantern drops within 5-6 kills. The second time we killed over 10 of them without a single drop. Instead of Jinxers we kept getting Shadower and Chopper spawns too, which didn't really help much ><
