SummaryGo to Mhaura and meet Koh Lenbalalako. It is said that she knows the whereabouts of the sinner's daughter. WalkthroughNote: You must have completed Sin Hunting - RNG AF1 to get this quest. Talk to Perih Vashai at K-7 in Windurst Woods for a cutscene. Next, head to Mhaura and talk to Koh Lenbalalako at F-9 in the Blacksmith's Guild. You will receive another cutscene. Next, head to the Eldieme Necropolis. Upon entering, you get another cutscene in which the Mithra Tracker wants you to go ahead of her and "clear the way" to the tombstone (southernmost G-9 of 4 chambers in the Eldieme Necropolis area accessible from I-10 in Batallia Downs.) Find the tombstone and examine it for another cutscene. Return to Windurst and talk again with Perih Vashai for another cutscene. Next, head to Castle Oztroja. Make your way past the large doorway controlled by the four switches. Proceed through the tunnel and up the stairs until you reach the large room with the fountain. Run into the pool around the fountain. When all yagudos have turned away, use scavange and camouflage, then run back out into the hallway. Repeat this until you receive the item Old Earring. I'm not saying that it definitely works, but here's my story:
Tried using scavenge for about an hour. Logged off and went to sleep. Logged back in and tried for another hour. Read the Alla forums. Logged off and logged back in. Got in the center of the pool and...got my old earring on the first scavenge.

Yea that log out thing doesnt always work so im thinking its just flook because i did it three times each for an hour then once for two hours like someone else yea no didnt work so im thinking its just flook im still sitting in the pool trying to get it im PLD/RNG like someone else was, trying to solo this, anyways if it worked for you congrats but its a myth it doesnt work like that, anyways wish me luck im on my 15th try to get this earring ><

buddy i tried it like 30times before i finally got it trying the log out log in its a myth i spent over 5 hours doing this that day its bulls*** thats now how the game works, ive read all the post, all the hints, i finally got it when i threw my controller at the TV then the next time i did it i got it which was hilarious but i had to buy a new TV first lol, but the fact is the log out log in is false, because another one of my buddies went there blm/rng and spent 2 days there he did the log out log in for the first day and the second day as soon as he got back to the castle and did scavagen he got the earring.
I was 0/19 as pld/rng. Logged out and back in, got it first try. I tried to put myself in the center, but it's not a perfect circle so the "center" is somewhat difficult to ascertain.

As many others have said in this thread, it seems that positioning youreslf dead center in the pool will get you the earring the first time. I just did this with my husband and it held true for us.
That's another one for the log out/log in thing. Took 2 hours, logged out frustrated, logged back in to try the trick and got it my first try back. I also made sure I was as close to dead center as possible.

Alright folks... let me say that I "camped" this off-and-on for 12 hours over the course of 3 weeks (Ranger is just an "on the side" job, so I wasn't in a hurry). But, as you can imagine, not getting the earring was really starting to get to me. Finally, frustrated out of my mind, I checked the forums here.
I saw the posts about standing the middle... but I'd been doing that. So I took note of the posts about logging out and then logging back in to reset "something." Well, whatever that "something" is, it worked. Because after logging back in, I got the earring on my first try.
Do yourself a favor. Try it. Or risk insanity and permanent injury like I did.

Went twice, first time ran out of silent oils... more than 2 stacks... second time came with my gf Sarenity (thank you honey =P) so she could save me some money on oils lol. No success for over an hour, tried the log out/log in. No luck. Saw the coffer pop. Logged out, logged in, stood in front of coffer, got it. Try it. I hate this mission... glad I never have to do it again.

ummm yeah im 56rng right, so i go and talk to mithra in windurst and start the mission. i got to Mhaura and talk to Koh... well this is where it gos wrong. i talk to her and all she says is crap about old native mithrans and sinning. there was no cut scene or anything. i look in my quest log and there it is. under currnet named "fire and brimstone" and its summary still says to talk to koh lebalalako. well i call a GM and find out theres 47 calls ahead of me. wtf?! anyone got an idea as to why this is happening? ive done af lvl 52 af gloves already and af weapon...GAH!

Ok, I did the Necropolis part as 75sam so checking the tombstone as another jobs works. You also need someone else to hit the switch for you to get past Titan's door.
As for the Oztroja part, I went as sam/rng. I don't know if /rng will lower chances of getting the old earring but I got mine on the first try. I got to the pond and stood in the middle like these other posts said. I also can't confirm about the hidden lvling up for scavenge. I've probably only used scavenge once before attempting this. Iceday 48% moon. Also, the Coffer chest was in the center of the pond as well. I just stood in front of the coffer and used scavenge.

I went as 50 RNG with a 75 rdm friend, i scavanged 13 times and while i was afk my rdm friend died LOL he got holy while converting >.>.
So i read a bunch of these posts about logging out and logging back in and getting it. So i figure hey why not, i do it and on first try after logging out i got it :O so yes there is somthing to the reset theory.

I heard some of the horror stories of "it took me 7 hours and still no earring"

Just did this on first try. I centered myself using the map; I'd look at my icon on map and move around to center myself in the pond. I then scavenged, got it first try.

Apparently just like everyone else was saying, standing in the centre is obviously the right thing to do. I was with Coolhand and Rivas doing this and they were wiping out the leeches and yags and I was trying to stay out of the way so I was doing it on the edge. I did this 5 times without any luck. Coolhand said to stand in the middle and voila! I got it that time, so on the 6th try we got it. Just some positive reenforcement to the "standing in the middle" routine that seems to have actually worked.

I have a feeling there is some merit to the log out-log in
thing when trying to get that blasted earring.
Was up in Castle Oztroja, took my time, silent oils and tonko, positioned myself dead center every time... Nothing. Went 0/8.
Out of frustation I turn to the infinite wisdom of the Allakhazam Forums,
log out in a safe area, logged back in, BINGO!
Thanks to Thrreee(rdm) and the thf (forgot your name >.<;) for killing the mobs and keeping me sneaked when oils ran out!

Just to make a correction, you can get the Fire and Brimstone quest at lvl 50 RNG. I'm not 51 yet myself, yet Perih has given me the quest already, so some changes need to be made! It's right on the sidebar to the left of the walkthrough, but the information on the walkthrough itself is erroneous...

me and a friend just did this together. I was a 52rng/nin he was a 75thf/rng. He pulled the leeches away while i scavenged, then i ran back and helped him kill them, and then he went and scavenged. Both of us were 1/1 on it. Crazy.

i gotta say... being very skeptical, and after 15+scavanges, i tried the log out/log in thing and got it right away. funny part was while i was waiting for scavange to be ready, the coffer popped in the middle of the pond right next to me. funny stuff.

I got the quest and came looking for the 4 sw door, took me a bit cause I dont farm or run around this place and I refuse to use or obtain maps. Kinda known for how I can memorize areas. Any how found what I figured was the pool I needed, got into center and first scavenge pop. Note I had been running around here least 40 min looking for 4 sw door >.>. lucky I guess. GL to all. next thf af
P.S. If no map to this place, get center best you can and circle the cam, this way you can tell better if center or not by using edges of pool while cam is rotating.

Obviously if you already have a level 75 job this is piss-ass easy. Anyway, after 5 unsuccessful scavenges I too decided to log out in the hallway. After coming back in I stood dead center in the pool on the map, scavenged, and got the earring. After hearing about so many people getting it on their first try after logging out and back in, I'm convinced that something definitely gets reset by doing so. I say try scavenging 5 times, and if it doesn't work, try the log out/in trick.

Is it remotely possible that scavenge is like so many other skills in ffxi? The more you do it the better you are at it and the more likely you are to succeed? Like the hidden lvling with digging and so on? Just a thought here but perhaps the rate of success for scavenge increases with the more you use it. Giving you an easier time with this quest. Didn't see anyone else mention this so I'm probably way off. The other elements could have to do with the day and moon phase. Also big in ffxi. Just some stray, random thoughts after reading all these posts.

Took me 7 tries as blm/rng. Didn't get it the first 6 times, read the stuff here. So what the hell, relogged and stood in center(according to map NOT visual center) and got it next try. I say relog and do the map center thing, I mean you got 5 mins to wait why not try?

Just finished this quest not too long ago. The Oztroja Part is easily soloable, just sub rdm or whm. Another thing that helps is to macro scavenge and camouflage. This helps with the doors
and actually doing the scavenging. Should look like this:

One thing I was told that I have yet to see someone mention on this forum is that before you go to oztroja you need to go back to Mhaura and talk to the mithra in the blsmith shop again. She doesnt say anything important but after I did this I got the earring on first try.

Just did this, brought 2 friends, lvl 70mnk and lvl 73drk. We cleared the whole room and it took about 14-17 scavenges before I actually got the earring. Good luck to everyone else.

This thing drove me mad, and it "only" took 5 scavenges. 3 scavenges, no luck, log out then in. Next Scavenge, nothing. 5th Scavenge.. run into pool, Invis starts to wear. Run out. Re-cast. Back in... Whups, there goes sneak, back out. Cast... Ok, go in.... Yagudo, look away! No! Away! Not IN THE DAMN POOL WITH ME!..
Ugh, sneak wearing. Re-cast, I guess. Try again... Nope, one of them starts to wear. Outta MP... Rest. Try again, about 4 tries, nope, still no chance to scavenge... Rest again...
FINALLY! Got a chance to scavenge, and got the earring. Should bloody think so -.-; If it takes this long to scavenge an earring, I'm dreading getting Coffer keys!
Edit: Hah! Nevermind! I got a coffer key for the nest in an EXP party (shortly after some other RNG got the coffer that was right next to us... D'oh!) Then the coffer re-spawned next to us (again)! For my Braccae :)

Just did this but died twice, First as RNG 52 agro'ed yup followed by death and de'lvl. Then WHM62 with sub RNG still agro and another death..... >.<
I settled for a Rasie 1 went to pond center as instructed and ding... earing first try with RNG sub.....
So it can be done but becarefull after opening door with 4 lever's that's where i got owned

i have tried last night from 12:00am to 6am. so thats 1 scavenge every 5 min. so thats probably ~72 scavenge and still HAVE NOT gotten the stupid earing. im so mad. i am lvl 57 btw so i HAVE to get this thing done.

nice i just did this got the earring on first scavenge :) of course i have to wait 3 more lvls before i can wear it but still its my first af piece i have ever recieved :)

all i have to say is everyone of you that got it on the first try suck *** i was there for 3 hours scavenging every 5 minutes. got nothing, and I mean NOTHING not even a damn piece of arrowwood lumber. then some dumb ass Yag who i though was more than far enough away decideds he needs to move and walks straight at me. so i die and I hate this game... again
oh and for all of you that say you get it at the center thats total BS also I was at the dead center every freaking time
Update; got it on the third try of day 2. so YAY!!! now Im trying to get the coffer in Garlaigne Citadel... happy joy.

I keep reading these posts about peopel taking hours upon hours to get this earring. I went in as 75sam/rng(thats right rng SUB). Stood in the pool (no aggro from leeches or yags btw) and zoomed in my camera. Didn't pay any attention to how off center my character looked. I just made sure my red marker on the map was dead center. Used scavenge. Old Earring first try. So my advice, try that. If it doesn't work, than I just got hella lucky.

I did this with my first scavenge.
I only had to Sneak because some high level had just been in and ravaged the Yagudo population in there, and I went to the dead centre of the pool and scavenged and got it first time.
If anyone is having trouble with this, my top tip is go dead centre of the pool. I'm pretty sure you'll get it. All other RNG I've spoken to about this who got it first time said they were dead centre too.

I've been told by a couple of people that Scavenge has a secret level, that goes up the more you use it. I'm not sure if it's true or not but maybe this affects how many attempts it takes to get the scavenging part of the quest done?
I'm heading to Castle Oztroja later today to try this. Not looking forward to finding it with the directions given above, so if anyone can give me any more specific directions, that someone who has only ever been in Castle Oztroja for the magicite could follow, it'd be much appreciated ^^

I haven't managed to scavenge up a single item yet. not one. nothing. zero. nadda... I hate you people that get it first try! ok ok...I don't, but I'm tempted to...

Got my ring on 4th try. I tried 3 times and then relogged. First try when I came back brought up the earring (*'-')b.
I was facing south too, which probably doesn't have anything to do with scavenge but hey? The more you know. ;)

omg... I've been doing this quest for 5 days... 4 deaths... 4 stacks of silent oils... and I'm 0/62 on svavenge... I've double checked making sure I've done everything right and I have... got all the cut scenes, she told me to go to castle Oztroja... still I'm not getting it... I've zoned and done it... logged out then back in... done it with no sneak and invis and still nothing... I try to scavenge in the very center everytime but still nothing... SE hates me and I hate them with a passion.
ok, got earring on try number 64... I still hate SE. Guess it just takes a ton of patience

hmm maybe u all miss a post. u dun have to zone or cursing like mad.. go to the pond . try to position ur self in the center of it.. check ur map if u r not sure. then try scavenge. trust me u will get the earring if u r at the center easily. No sweat.

Reading on u all posts on how many hours camp and the cursing is so funny. I got mine at first try "CENTER OF THE POOL" nuff said.

For everyone who posts you can do this with ranger sub. It lowers the rate! It can be done, but will take many more tries. I camped at the pond for 3hrs with no luck and narrowely escaped death. I went originally with my 62pld/whm (thank god for blink and instant warp!) Went back with 2 LS members (still pld/whm) another 2hrs no luck. Teleported to mea (thank whm) switched to my then 53rng/nin. BAM! 1st Scavenge! So either the amount of time or havin Ranger main in my experience is my experience. I think it's ranger main that did it. Kinda like Steal as thf main or thf sub. which is better?
