Summary

A piece of ranger artifact gear lays hidden in a coffer in Monastic Cavern.

Walkthrough

Before starting this quest, you must first activate the quest Borghertz's Chasing Hands. You must also have completed Sin Hunting - RNG AF1.

Head into Davoi or Monastic Cavern and begin killing orcs to get a coffer key. The keys are dropped by Orcish Farkillers, Orcish Dreadnoughts, Orcish Champions and Orcish Dragoons.

Next, head into Monastic Cavern to find a treasure coffer. The coffers appear at I-7, H-7, H-8, G-8 and H-9.

Trade your key to the coffer to receive your Hunter's Jerkin. You must be a ranger when you open the coffer.

Seraph

Thanks to everyone who helped me get the key.

71 PLD Blitzen, 66 THF, 68 SMN, 57 RNG (me), 55 THF, 75 DRK.

The fights were pretty uneventful, and we could easily handle 1-2 links with the DRK's excellent Sleep II management. The PLD had to work really hard, since our only healer was the SMN who was skilling-up. With the two TH2's, we got the first key in under an hour. Sadly, we had to leave before our second party member got their AF key.

The coffer maps at speakeasy.org are dead-on, and it took me about 40 minutes of running around monastic caverns, checking all the spots, before the coffer popped. Orcs aggro to sight (obviously), so bring a stack of tonko powders and you're good. I went through 30 of them, and had no problems. An orc was standing RIGHT next to the chest (facing away) when I dropped invis to open it, recasted, but another saw me. Even without my shadows up I had PLENTY of time to run to the island zone to warp cudgel out.

Good luck to you. If you're on Seraph and need a hand, lemme know.

(Ranger)(Artifact)(Armor)(key)(Can I have it?)(Please)(Skill)(Up)(All right!)(Thank you)
Lucky?

Does this key exist?

4 hours in both Monastic Caverns and Davoi, over 100 kills, no drops. We even had a 52 thf who got the kill about 60% of the time. I felt bad dragging all those people there but I hope they will be willing to go through that again. I know the thief will come back because he got 8 gold beastcoins while we were there. I'm going to owe a lot of favours after this.
AF Order Question.

I completed AF1 and AP2. Some of my slightly higher ranger friends are going key/coffer hunting tonight. If I get my key and open the coffer, will I get my Jerkin or do I need to complete the other AF quests first?

If you have activated/done AF2, then you can get any of the coffer armor. Just make sure that you are teh proper job when opening the coffer. You can be any job when getting the key, but dont open that coffer unless you are teh job that needs teh AF.

Like many others, we zoned into the cavern and back out onto the island with the church. Plenty of Orcs to kill for the key here. We had 12 people at one point and finished at around 6 people. We had at least three people over 65. It was a 100% Full Moon and we had TH2 and a couple TH1's (they were collecting gold coins).

What day you ask? Well, all of them. Took us 6 hours to get TWO keys. One for a BLM and one for me. The battles only lasted seconds. I'd get two bullets out of my gun before the mob was dead.

I got a coffer party together for this this other day. Much thanks to Kalrou for coming along to heal us even though she didn't need the key. And great thanks to Chronis (sorry if I spelled your name wrong) a 68 MNK that came along to tank and otherwise beatdown the orcs.

Anyway, on to the content:

We zoned into the cavern from the cavern (I8) back into Davoi at the intersection of H/I-8/9. We proceed to a camp that was just across the bridge at I8. From there we were able to pretty safely pull all kinds of orcs. There is a spawn at that camp spot, but our blm is quick with Elemental Seal + Sleepga, so we didn't have too much of a problem. We were able to collect four keys in about three hours as well as a testimony for the monk and two for the rangers (yay!). Getting the key is truly the hard part, because finding the coffers is easy. Just never ever be inside the cavern in an even remotely unsafe spot when invisible wears off. Be patient and wait for orcs to look away when you drop invisible for the coffer. I would also recommend setting up a /item macro to trade the key so you can get your AF and get invisible back up ASAP.

From our experience, the farkillers (rng) die the easiest (just like us regular rangers). Some of them were as low as {Very Tough} to me at level 57. The Champions, Dragoons, and others, however, were not.

Oh, and one more thing, don't be dumb like me. I didn't have Genkai 3 active when we went. Otherwise the nice monk was going to help us knock that out too since he already had the orb and knew where to go.

Happy key hunting!

I see the coffer spawns clearly in Monastic Cavern. What isn't all that clear to me is whether the key drop takes place in the Cavern, or Davoi. From this post it appears we're to zone back into Davoi? Is that island the best or only place to get the drop? Is the bridge the best camp, given the in-camp pops? Thanks.

the coffer key is the hard part. I suggest making friends with some lvl 45+ thfs for TH2. I got some help from 4 65+ people. 1 being a thf. also, one of the guys 45 thf friends was getting some skill up in davoi, so he joined us too (yea!!). all in all, TH2 made it fairly easy. I got the key I needed in about 15 minutes.

Being a rng, I have camoflauge. I subbed my thf (flee) and went to Monastic Caverns. avoiding aggro wasnt too hard. I tapped flee, then camo and ran to what I found as a semi-safe area on my widescan. it was a corner behind some rocks. I sat there and waited for the camo timer to tick down. as soon as I could, i tapped flee and camo again, and continued running around. I found the coffer in the western tunnel in the big area. opened it, and used a scroll of instant warp to get out.

I didnt use any silent oils or prism powders while looking for the coffer. I might have been lucky, or I might have found a nice method; I'll let you chose.

I hope this can help some of you a bit with party planning.

Black Mages also do this to get the Wizard's Coat, their level 58 AF body armor.
