Summary

Antreneau's Uncle Louverance set out on a journey to cross the Uleguerand Range quite some time ago. Antreneau tells you that the other side of the mountains can be reached through a cave found on the slopes of Thousandfall Ridge...

Walkthrough

To activate this quest you need to go to Southern San d'Oria, (G-7), go on the 2nd floor of the house, read the diary a couple of times until you have read up to page 4.

After that head back to Port San d'Oria and talk to Antreneau in the Rusty Anchor Pub who will say that the map for Uleguerand Range is top secret and his nephew has gone there to investigate the mountains. He asks you to find his nephew and tell him he wishes him back soon. Now you have the quest, and you need a Moblin Hotrok. Moblin Hotrok is dropped by Moblin Ashman in Oldton Movalpolos.

When you have the rock, go to Uleguerand Range. What you are looking for in Uleguerand Range is a ??? at about the position of F-9, as F-9 seems very easy to get to, this is NOT the case, the position is among the cave ledges you can't reach from the entrance, what you now have to do is run all around Uleguerand Range to the top of it. For this will Sneak and Invisible be needed for anyone who attempts doing this as the mobs here starts con at Easy Prey to Tough at the entrance for lv65. At the highest point there will be mobs that are IT++ for lv75. Also there is a monster type here that sees through Sneak and Invisible, be cautious and you can avoid them. Do not jump down holes on the way. Brontotaur, Tyrannotaur and Molech is the mob that sees through, if I forgot another name they have, you should recognize it nonetheless.

Once you are at the top, start walk towards F-9 and you will see two slopes, if you face so you can see both, the right one is where you will be sliding down. As if the hard part was to reach this point, the hardest is now to slide correctly and either find a hidden hole on the slope to reach the caverns, or land on the platform down below, which by the way is VERY difficult to see til its almost to late. The left ledge of the slope is where you should go, but not completely into the ledge. When you reach either the hole (which you wont see til you fall through) or manage to land on the platform, walk around inside the caves and look for the ???.

Trade the Moblin Hotrok and you will get a cutscene. Afterwards you get the map and quest complete.

Got up to the top, first try. But I can understand why people are annoyed if they failed. It is a very difficult process and was not made for people who give up easily (though, this game wasn't really made for those people =P).

Anywho, I just wanted to warn people when they come to (G-7) as there is a very narrow passage and you need to wait until the Taurus there is facing the other way before you pass. This took me a bit of time. Also, if you do go down the west side of Thousandfall Ridge, there is a cave that will lead you back to the entrance. Hopefully most of you know that already. ^^;

Good luck!

I've had hero fame in sandy for a very very long time, yet I still can't activate this quest. I can only read up to page 2 in that diary and I didn't see any NPC's in the house. what do I do?

That same diary is used as part of another quest called "To Cure a Cough". It may be that you need to clear that one before more pages are made available.

Hope this helps! Smiley: boozing

Please use the images found HERE for a reference as I walk you through how I got my map.

I had read every post possible on how to get this map and still managed to fail at it several times. I just could never land on that stupid ledge. Well I did manage to fall into the hole marked S1 in the referenced image. I landed inside the mountain in a series of caves that actually connect to the needed ??? to attain the map!!

The beauty here is that you can see cave S1 from the top of the cliff unlike the elusive S3 ledge at the bottom. If you stand at the edge of the cliff and rotate your camera view, you will be able to see the S1 cave and thus have a target to aim for which makes selecting your path a lot easier. Even better here is that if you miss the S1 cave, you still stand a good chance of landing on the S3 ledge, both will get you to the map.

Regardless of weather you land on S1 or S3, you will still need to wonder through the system of caves to find the ??? inside. Unlike what other posts have alluded to, this is not a simple run in the park as the caves have several directions you can go in. There are bats and Hecteyes here that will agro to sound so have your sneak up prior to sliding. For a map of the cave system once you are in either S1 or S3, please go to this SITE and open up the map for Uleguerand Range. In the upper left corner of the map, they show you a zoom of the cave system and they have them color coded for simplicity. Now all you need to do is orient yourself and go claim your much deserved map.

I am a map *****! I have no real need for this map other then I hate being in any zone and not be able to quickly visualize where I am. I spent many hours and shed a lot of blood in this zone but last night it all became worthwhile.

The first website you link to is wrong. The path they give you for the western slope will take you to the spring for the ENM item. I finally got onto the ledge after five attempts only to realize I couldn't get the map.

Seems whoever made that site has no idea what they're talking about. Unless they knew what they were doing, in which case Satan is currently building a new circle of Hell just for them.

This is probably the hardest quest for a map...took me 3 stack of silent oil and 75 shinobi-tabi (was lv 15 nin, since everything is EP+ for lv75). Wouldnt be a big prob if there was no true sight mob >:(, i got on top 3 times.Right slide, 1/3 from left edge. Seriously, go on the web and print it lol.

Uleguerand Range Map Quest correct cave walk-through

Introduction:

If you've done your research on this quest you'll notice that there is a lot conflicting information in various threads on multiple sites with respect to finding the cave that contains the "???". As such, I decided to go out and discover for myself the correct answer, making a point of recording what I discovered. I've checked and rechecked the accuracy of the information that I'm providing here, and guarantee that it is 100% correct. This walkthrough is designed to provide you with the definitive answer for finding the "???" which gives you the map for Uleguerand Range.

Scope:

This walkthrough assumes that you have already activated the quest "Over the Hills and Far Away," have your "Moblin Hotrok," and are at the top of Thousandfall Ridge ready for the "slope slide." The details on how to get to this point in the quest are already well covered elsewhere and are outside the scope of this walkthrough.

Explanation of Thousandfall Ridge:

Thousandfall Ridge has 2 slopes. A south slope and a west slope. When you are at the top of Thousandfall Ridge approaching the slopes, you will see a huge rock. The south slope is to the left of the rock, and the west slope is to the right of the rock.

Illustrations of the slopes:

  • South Slope
    [li]West Slope

The above two images are borrowed from koolaid-ffxi.org and heavily edited for our purposes here.

    Explanation of the south slope:

The south slope has 2 moguls and 3 caves. This slope has one cave near the top (cave S1), and two (with associated ledges) at the bottom (cave S2 and cave S3).

    Explanation of the west slope:

The west slope has 0 moguls and 3 caves. This slope has one cave near the top (cave W1), and two (with associated ledges) at the bottom (cave W2 and cave W3).

    Explanation of Thousandfall Ridge's caves:

Cave S1 and Cave W1 are connected and contain nothing of interest. Cave S3 and Cave W2 are connected and contain the "???" that you want. Cave S2 leads to the BearClaw Pinnacle zone (ENM). Cave W3 leads to the Chamnaet Ice (ENM key item). Cave S2 and Cave W3 are not connected and are separate caves.

                   E-8 (Cave W2)

The cartography's above are not to scale, and do not accommodate for twists in the paths, nor ascent and descent. However, they are accurate insofar as the turns you need to make to get from one point to another.

    Instructions:

As mentioned above, when you are at the top of Thousandfall Ridge approaching the slopes, you will see a huge rock. The south slope is to the left of the rock, and the west slope is to the right of the rock.

You have two choices: From the perspective of looking down a slope, you can aim for the bottom eastern cave of the south slope (Cave S3), or you can aim for the bottom northern cave of the west slope (Cave W2). Both of those caves lead to the "???", since they are connected.

In other words, again from the perspective of looking down a slope, you can aim for the bottom left cave of the left slope (Cave S3), or you can aim for the bottom right cave of the right slope (Cave W2).

Make sure that both Sneak and Invisible are on before sliding down the slope. For the caves, you'll only need Sneak, but if you fall off the slope, you'll need both Sneak and Invisible

If on your way down you fall into one of the top caves (Cave S1 or Cave W1), which are virtually invisible while sliding, do not panic. If you fell into Cave S1, simply jump back out and aim for Cave S3, which is virtually directly below you. If you fell into Cave W1, simply jump back out and aim for Cave W2, which is virtually directly below you. It's important to note that there are some irregularities on the slope's surface that will tend to move you right or left slightly, adjust yourself accordingly so that you maintain a path that is almost exactly straight down, if you fell into one of these top caves.

If you ended up at Cave W2, take a right at the 1st intersection, a left at the 2nd intersection, and a right at the 3rd intersection, and trade you Moblin Hotrok to the "???". If you ended up at Cave S3, go straight at the 1st intersection, take a right at the 2nd intersection, and go straight at the 3rd intersection, and trade your Moblin Hotrok to the "???".

If you ended up sliding into one of the wrong caves (Cave S2 or Cave W3), or slide off the slope entirely, you'll have to climb all the way back up to the top of Thousandfall Ridge and try again. You should be able to get it on your first try if you're real careful and run against the gravity of the slope (which slows your descent). However, it does take some people a few practice tries to become familiar enough with the slope.

Good luck, have fun, and don't give up! This is probably the most challenging map in the game to receive. It's quite the accomplishment once you get it.

    Miscellaneous tips:

[li]Do not fall down any holes on the way to the top of Thousandfall Ridge
  • Have one or more ways that you can "Reraise" yourself, be it though a scroll, potion, spell, or equipment. If you get aggro, die in a convenient place, i.e., somewhere that is relatively safe to reraise. You'll lose less xp and waste less time this way
  • Bring an ample supply (1 or 2 stacks each) of Silent Oil and Prism Powder; There is a lot of magic aggro so you won't want to be casting spells
  • Have a way to get back home: Warp spell, scroll, equipment
  • [li]Steer very clear of the True Sight mobs. They belong to the Taurus family: Brontotaur, Tyrannotaur and Molech

Excellent post. To ensure i landed at S3 on the first attempt, I timed how long it took me to get from one end of the slope ridge to the other watching the mins on my vanadiel clock >.> Assigning 1/3 of the time to each section I ran back making sure I was at the eastern 1/3. When I dropped i slid right past S1 and landed at S3.

All right! I got my map yesterday. The whole entire thing only took me maybe 2 hours. First thing I did was go to Oldton Movalpolos to camp for my Moblin Hotrok. As stated by some other posts, Moblin Ashman pops at (K-10) in the lower portion.

Now I went to camp him as a 60SAM/30NIN. The first time I saw him, I just ran up to him and started whacking him. Things were going fine. He has a fair amount of HP, but he hardly hit me at all (practically never with utsusemi up). However, than I had two other moblins link and than things started to look a little gray. I busted out my 2 hour and wasted the Ashman. No drop, just some moblin armor. I took out my Warp Club and warped the hell out of there. I made it back to Jeuno with 23/1272 HP!!

So I headed right back there and decided to be a little more cautious when I attacked him and to where I pull him to. So, I found that if you pull him to the far back corner, nothing will link at all down there since he's the only spawn on the very bottom platform. This guy was definately easy. My evasion is capped (202) plus I wore Dodge earrings x2 and my emperor hairpain and this guy just could not hit me. I only went through 3-6 shadows for the whole fight. So I killed him 4 times before he finally dropped the Hotrok. I warped back to Sandy and flagged the quest.

Next I switched jobs to 24WHM/12NIN and started looking for a Teleport-Vahzl. I got one and navigated my way through Xarcabard into Uleguerand Range. First time in...I hid around a rock to recast sneak and aggroed a snoll. Didn't see that little ******* hiding on the other side. So back to Jeuno I went. I got a another Teleport-Vahzl (from the same WHM). This time, as soon as I got into Xarcabard, I started to cast sneak and aggroed an Ice Element. I died again. Back to Jeuno again to get another Teleport from the white mage. Third time was the charm. I set my HP in Xarcabard (for 3200 gil ><) and continued onward. I navigated through Uleguerand Range with this map:

    http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/quest-uleguerand_range.php

And I used the information on this site in order to know what all the mobs aggroed to and for a nice picture of the slope:

    http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshell/space/Over+the+Hills+and+Far+Away

So, cautiously I made my way up and up until I finally made it to the slopes. I took the Southern Slope and started skiing downward. LUCKILY I made it on the ledge on the first try. I ran in and found the ??? and traded the Moblin Hotrok and got the cut scene. w00t new map for me! So now that I had my map I decided that I wanted to climb back to so I could get some nice screen shots of the HNM Jormungand. He is absolutely hugh and a bad ***. Here's a pic of me about to put the smack down on him.

    http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/~smendral/Jormungand%20(3).bmp

*Note just copy and paste that URL. I'll change it to .jpg one of these days.

This pic is kinda big, so my apologizes for the long loading time.

    Needless to say, I died a quick and horrible death. He hit me for 634 damage. I did however get two swings off at him. I missed both ; ;

Well, that was my map aquisition story. It was a fun adventure and nice to see a new zone. Good luck to everyone that tries this.

Just a not on bomb aggro with magic. And what I learned while mining ifrits alot.

If theres no weather effect, if your far enoph away that you can't cast on bomb, it will not aggro.

if its double weather, if you see bomb on screen, it will aggro (if you have settings to see farthest posible, it may not). Single weather is inbetween.

Thought finding the 2 coffers in sky zones where bad for maps ><

Attempted this the other day, and I missed the ledge the first run down... so I ran all the way back, and tried again. Managed to land it! I was so happy. I chose the ledge that faces west (the one on the right side) and went down the left side of it...

Went in to the cave all excited, avoided aggro from the hecteyes... and got all the way back into a dead end... Only thing in the cave was the "Champaen Spring" or some such, which when I looked it up, was somehow involved with the Bearclaw Peak ENM...

But there was no ??? to speak of. And no 'joining' paths between tunnels...

But I most definately choose :
    Quote:
the right one is where you will be sliding down. As if the hard part was to reach this point, the hardest is now to slide correctly and either find a hidden hole on the slope to reach the caverns, or land on the platform down below, which by the way is VERY difficult to see til its almost to late. The left ledge of the slope is where you should go

That is, at the top, facing the two slopes, I chose the right one, slid on left side. Even checked the link to the koolaid site, and used their picture. According to walkthru, I got the correct one...

So why wasnt there a ??? mark for me? Am I just reading these wrong, or are the walkthrus flawed?

Yes, as mentioned above... You want the RIGHT side of the RIGHT slope, looking from the top. That is, the RIGHT side of the slope that faces West. The guide above has a typo, any chance that could be fixed? Dont have access to my email here, so I cant submit a change ><

/sigh Those true sight mobs aggro from very far away... and they are plentiful. >.> I made it up to the top center of the map and got aggroed by one, but hit Perfect Dodge and Flee, then when I got pretty far away, hit Hide as I was running. That actually, to my surprise, seemed to lose them. I snuck and invised again, now at half health after 2-3 hits, and continued on. Then I ended up seeing another True Sight mob a bit too late (freaking computer didn't load it til the last second >.>) and got killed. :/ Oh well... I will get this map one day... when I have more of a buffer. >.>

They should make the snow-skiing cliff into a mini-game ^^ It was quite fun sliding down the cliff, but not so fun going all the way up. Luckily I managed to land on the ledge the first time.

A note: Be very careful of the HUGE dragon Jormungand, who pops around G8 (near the end of the climb). He'll surely make tarutaru sauce out of anyone getting too close. Since he's so big it'll be easy to notice if he's there. Just wait for it to move to one side of the area, and run along the wall of the opposite side, that's how we got across.

my friends and I all had trouble getting the quest despite having read the diary. As long as you have read page 4 and have level 9 fame, i think you will get the quest. My friend received map quest without having done he Thyme moss davoi quest. I had level8 fame, didnt get quest, turned in stack of tiger fangs, got lvl9 fame, and got cutscene from bean guy finally. hope this helps.

I just did this quest this past weekend. I went with Pablo (whm75). We had to run around two times to finally get the right cave.

There are 2 cliffs slopes. The Southern one and the Western one. Each of the cliff slopes has 2 cave entrances at the bottom. In order to get to the ??? you need to slide down and end up on either:

    1. the Right Cave (the one on the East side of the two caves) of the Southern face. "Right Cave" is relative to being on the bottom looking at the Cliff face.
    2. the Left Cave (the one on the North side of the two caves) of the Western face. "Left Cave" is relative to being on the bottom looking at the Cliff face.
[These two caves are connected together via tunnels. The ??? is in these tunnels.]
There are probably other caves entrances, but I don't know which other ones will get you to the ???.

The Left Cave (the one on the West side of the two caves) of the Southern face leads Bearclaw Pinnacle. This entrance to Bearclaw Pinnacle had no mobs and nothing but a big swirly looking vortex at the end. There is nothing you can select here.

The Right Cave (the one on the South side of the two caves) of the Western face leads another dead end with nothing but what looks like a frozen lake.

I actually ended up in the "wrong" cave each time I went around. But fortunately, Pablo got to the correct cave entrance. So, what I did was get myself killed (attacking an EP Snoll). He tractored me up to the ledge and Raise III'ed me. Only about 200-300 xp lost.. but more importantly, got the map!

I used the excellent guide at:
    http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshell/space/Over+the+Hills+and+Far+Away

    with the map at:
    http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshell/space/Uleguerand+Range

BTW, you get the map after the C/S after you trade the hotrok. You don't need to go back to Sandy to finish the quest; but I've heard that you get another C/S if you do go back to Sandy and talk to the NPC.

Oh, and another thing, at the first tunnel entrance at around H11, there was a targettable ice pyramid. Clicking this gave me a Key Item: Mystic Ice (I think). Don't know what it's for though. The following tunnels also had a targettable pyramid, but did not give any more Key Items.

There is one part in that guide you linked to that is wrong. It says that you must complete the quest To Cure A Cough before you can get this quest. I have not completed that, but I was able to get this quest without a problem. I do like their map, though. ^^

Yup only 1 goblin ashman, in the room with the switches & npcs. He spawns under the bridges that raise by pulling the rusty levers. His respawn is 12 minutes. Took me 3 kills.

    Ok, so now there has been 2 that says the right ledge of the right slope, I guess that is if you slide all the way down and land on the cavern entrance furthest down, however on the left side, DURING the slope, there was a hidden hole, which I fell down in, hence why I said the left ledge of the right slope (this is getting confusing). If you guys who also have done this quest now failed to get to the hole, my apologies, I actually forgot about the entrance down below after have missed them 3 times then find the hole by mistake on my 4th try ^^;
