Summary

Antreneau's Uncle Louverance set out on a journey to cross the Uleguerand Range quite some time ago. Antreneau tells you that the other side of the mountains can be reached through a cave found on the slopes of Thousandfall Ridge...

Walkthrough

To activate this quest you need to go to Southern San d'Oria, (G-7), go on the 2nd floor of the house, read the diary a couple of times until you have read up to page 4.

After that head back to Port San d'Oria and talk to Antreneau in the Rusty Anchor Pub who will say that the map for Uleguerand Range is top secret and his nephew has gone there to investigate the mountains. He asks you to find his nephew and tell him he wishes him back soon. Now you have the quest, and you need a Moblin Hotrok. Moblin Hotrok is dropped by Moblin Ashman in Oldton Movalpolos.

When you have the rock, go to Uleguerand Range. What you are looking for in Uleguerand Range is a ??? at about the position of F-9, as F-9 seems very easy to get to, this is NOT the case, the position is among the cave ledges you can't reach from the entrance, what you now have to do is run all around Uleguerand Range to the top of it. For this will Sneak and Invisible be needed for anyone who attempts doing this as the mobs here starts con at Easy Prey to Tough at the entrance for lv65. At the highest point there will be mobs that are IT++ for lv75. Also there is a monster type here that sees through Sneak and Invisible, be cautious and you can avoid them. Do not jump down holes on the way. Brontotaur, Tyrannotaur and Molech is the mob that sees through, if I forgot another name they have, you should recognize it nonetheless.

Once you are at the top, start walk towards F-9 and you will see two slopes, if you face so you can see both, the right one is where you will be sliding down. As if the hard part was to reach this point, the hardest is now to slide correctly and either find a hidden hole on the slope to reach the caverns, or land on the platform down below, which by the way is VERY difficult to see til its almost to late. The left ledge of the slope is where you should go, but not completely into the ledge. When you reach either the hole (which you wont see til you fall through) or manage to land on the platform, walk around inside the caves and look for the ???.

Trade the Moblin Hotrok and you will get a cutscene. Afterwards you get the map and quest complete.

Ok I read up to page 4 on the diary a few times, I have completed both Squire II and Medicine Woman quest.

Now when i try to get the CS from Antreneau at the Rusty Anchor, all he talks about is beans.

Just wondering if there is a fame level (which mine is high in sandy) or maybe a pre-requisite that i am missing.
wtf
# Sep 19 2007 at 1:12 AM Rating: Decent
Yes you are missing a quest talk to the man at the bar and he will tell you if you bring him 3 i think rabbit meat or something like that he can make something for the other guy.Buy from ah or farm them easy just outside sandy then when you trade the guy who talks about beans will be happy after that you can do this quest.

ok if u want clear and easy 2 follow instructions on how 2 get the correct cave system that leads 2 the ???(4 map quest) @ f-9 then please ignor all other posts and concentrate on mine. lets assume ur at the South slope(ignore West slope) using <pos> macro and map find pos G9/F9 (its basically dead centre of S' slope) but check using <pos> again u must b inbeetween G9/F9. NOW whilst pulling back on the derectional control(to slow ur desent)DROP DOWN try and stay dead centre near the bottom u will see a bump coming out of the slope.just b4 u hit the bump pull left/back on derectional control. if u have slowed ur decent and pulld left just b4 the bump its not that hard 2 drop in2 the correct cave(btw if u repeat this proccess but pull right just b4 the bump u will land in a different cave that does not connect 2 the ??? however it does infact lead 2 the bearclaw pinnacle entrance) now that ur in the correct h9/left hand side cave its very easy 2find the ???. TRADE THE HOTROCK AND BINGO BABY. other notes the guide above mentions that if u drop in2 the holeS(half way down) u can access the ???. total bullsnit lies the guy who done the rightup on this must have been hi AS a **** on crack. he spends more time talking about potential agro than he does speaking about how2 do the quest(its like a very bad piece of homework with an affull lot of tranference from the main objective(my pet fish could have done better) but maybe he hi on crack when he wrote it) hope this helps.

This post, while completely unintelligable, has the right idea. Find the G/F-9 border on the south cliff using <pos>, and jump off there. Then you'll see a mogul in the center on the way down. Move about a Mogul-width left of that mogul and continue sliding.
Not really helpful...

Honestly, by the time you climb to the top nine times and finally slide into the right hole, you won't even need the map. Seriously, I've climbed up there nine times, and I still can't make it into the right hole. I don't know if I'm just inept, or what. But I know I could take you anywhere you wanted to go in Uleguerand Range without the benefit of the map...it's become my second home.

For now, I've banished my Moblin Hotrok to storage, where it will likely rot for all eternity.

I have killed so many Ashman and Gurneyman for the drop it is not even funny. My question is this, do you have to have the quest activated in order to get the drop, or is it like anything else and is completely random? I am about 0/40+ or so at this point w/o the quest activated.

You don't have to activate the quest to get the Moblin Hotrok. I got mine before activating it and had to look it up to figure out WTF it did.

I just started this quest. I was suck on page 2 when I saw a post that you had to do the Medicine Woman quest to get page 3. I just did that quest and got page 3. It seems to me that each page talks of a quest which I have done. Page 2 talks of the Paladin quest and 3 of a cough medicine, hence the medicine woman quest. Hope this helps ppl out.

I highly doubt you read the diary. You just examined it any saw it only went up to page 2. You actually have to read page 1 and page 2. after that examine it again and page 3 pops up. repeat for page 4.

Just finished this quest & got the map tonight. As if trying to avoid the true-sight mobs wasn't enough to set nerves on edge, I rounded the corner to see Jormungand. I've never hugged a wall so tightly before.

Anywho, got lucky and fell in the hole on the way down the slope, and used the map at FFXI-Atlas.com to find my way around the tunnels to the ???.

Another map added to the collection!

I just got this map. I fell off the slope at F-9, right at he border to G-9. If you look at your map (even though it says you don't have it), look at where your cursor is. Put the edge of it on the border of F-9/G-9 and drop stright off the side. If you fall straight, you should hit the hole and fall into the cave.

Great info, but I found it lacking some things.
1. I recommend you go to the Slopes and look at them. Look at where you want fall and land. You can get there by going down the ramp (G-11), avoid the buffaloes, I think they are true sight mobs. Either way they aggro on sight. Look at the South and West slopes. The ramp leads you to the south sloper there is a tunnel/cave in the corner that leads you to the other West slope.
2. Notice the holes and ledges. On the south slope, you want the right or east ledge. On the West Slope you want the left or north ledge.
3. I used the concept of guessimating the location of the ledges in reference to the top.

Top view of F-8/9 entering from the east. You face the west slope and have the south slope on your left. I have to go back and fill in all the holes. First time I missed it completely. I took the west slope again, cut the top slope in 3 parts and took the right slice one. This is a top view of what you see when you get to the top slope. Be aware you do not have a map, but picture a top view in your mind of what you see horizontally. When you get to the top you will see 2 edges with a big rock in the middle that is located in Southwest corner. Now, where to drop, if you see that I have divided the edges into 3 parts. Choose either the ^ (West slope) or < (south Slope) to drop. These are where the ledges at the bottom you want to land. If you choose the others you do not pass go and you pay me 200 gil. Ok since I did the West Slope, I took the plunge and went down I slowed myself down using my technique of walking backwards (pulling back on the joystick) and behold, I saw a HOLE. I managed to guide myself and not only get in the hole but to land in the hole in healing positon. I hit the joystick wrong >.<. I got skillz but its more luck. Anyways I went exploring happy as a giddie little girl, hey was doll festival time what can I say. Well, the hole lead me to bats, worms, and Mindgazers (hectereyes). I kept sneak up all the way, inviso is not need although the Mindgazers checked DC to my 75 WHM. After 20 minutes wandering around like a Scared WHITE WHM of the mindgazers I come accross Oskur - jp tarutaru RDM with Sneak. He too was 75 but was running around like he owned the place nothing aggro him. I dropped my invisible and asked him <quest> <map> <can I have it?>. Pays to be polite and he said sure, I ran off and got lost again but I learned that cave is not what I wanted to drop because there where holes that, well I didnt trust. He called me over to the entrance. Found the entrance and he said <follow>. He dropped off the edge, :O. I am like damn I am in the wrong spot, Geranimo, I did my slowing down technique again. Knowing full well I could miss the stupid ledge again. I suddenly stopped and no tarutaru was around, he had hit the bottom and over shot the ledge. So, use the slowing technique else get the record for downhill. Now was the fun part, how to get the taru up here next to me. He attacked a wabbit and it killed him go figure it turns yellow and I tractor my new found RDM friend and the wabbit attacks me, sleepga his wabbit tail, raise 3 my RDM and proceed to log to remove hate. The variable hare is ep but ep to WHM can mean death if not careful. So log in and run around the cave and tada ???. Cutscene, CoP related cutscene no spoiler from me and I got the map. I of course yell to my LS "WOOT! I GOT Uleguerand Range Map. I am king of the world." I being a good WHM tho parked my white rear at the ledge. A few other 75's in the LS need the map so I told them the plan come to the cliff edge, die and I tractor you, easier to lose 200 exp and r3 ya versus run and dodge the mobs only to win a gold medal on the Vana'Diel Downhill run.

This is the best info I've found this far, to make completely sure you'll hit the hole just look down the slope and aim between the 2 "lumps".
And one more thing, when you fall down the hole you'll be surrounded by Nightmare Bats and Mindgazers so sneak up before you fall down and don't believe you'll have any chance whasoever to do it after you fall down.

I am unable to start the quest and am completely baffled as to why. I have level 7 fame in San d'Oria and have cleared ALL current quests. Antreneau still says "All right, now it's time to eat." My last thought is that perhaps I need to wait until after the server resets or perhaps even until the next conquest update. If I get no solution by the next conquest update, I'll edit this with the answer as to whether that was the case or not. In advance, thank you for any and every suggestion. ^^

Edit/Update: I tried the following server day and it did not work. However, when I tried after the next conquest update, the quest started fine.

Roughest map quest EVER

Unless you have some special need for this map (nobody does), don't make a big deal of getting this. The map doesn't help with the underground passages and the outside has limited deviation, it generally only goes one way anyway. If you need a map to navigate a one-way street.. I feel for you.

First off, even at L75 you will be using sneak/invis constantly (practically everything but bunnies will aggro), and with many magic-aggro mobs, this means investing in medicines (this quest cost me about 70K in oils and powders). Basically you sneak/invis, sprint past tigers, raptors, demons, bombs, true-sight saurus mobs, buffalos, and elementals to a tunnel, sneak through it, have a brief safe area to recover MP, sneak/invis, and then sprint to the next tunnel. The open areas are deceptive in that there are huge snow pillars all over the place and the saurus mobs like to hide behind them. Also there are holes strategically placed where they are hard to see until you are close to them, and they are almost directly in the shortest path to the next tunnel.

There is one part near the end where there's a thin pathway area and two saurus mobs patrol it. You will need to practically step over their tails as you slip past them. Then you have to cross Jormungand's area, but fortunately he tends to hang out on one side far from where you need to go.

Just when you thought it was all good, you get to the ledge area. Of course there's mobs here! Bombs tend to hang around one of the faces while buffalo hang around the other. So while you're trying to get your bearings and line yourself up for the descent, you have to make sure nothing manages to aggro you before you drop.

It took me three tries to successfully land on the ledge. I found that trying to adjust my descent only made things worse as it's hard to get your bearings while dropping. It was best to just guess the pest possible place at the top and let fate handle the rest. On my last drop I took the leap of faith and without steering at all I managed to land one foot on the ledge. Now note, once you are on the ledge, you're NOT SAFE yet! Sneak/invis up, cuz there are bats and worms in the tunnels. I'm not sure if they aggro, but this is not the time to find out. You still need to trek a short ways inside to get to the ???.

The only saving grace I had was that when I did this quest there were alot of people in the zone EXP'ing. At practically every tunnel exit a group was pulling mobs, which really helped out alot. If you can, try to go under these conditions. It makes at least 1/3 of each sprint that much less dangerous. You may want to use extra caution if people are fighting Jormy, I'm sure he has nutty AoE damage you don't want to get accidentally caught up in. If you see an unusually high number of 75's with search comments not mentioning EXP, be prepared.

This is the hardest map quest definately. You have to tiptoe through a minefield and any aggro at all will result in either death or teleporting out of the area. All that time spent sneaking around Valkurm dodging goblins in the old days will pay for itself here.

Okay I've read this forum and the information (mostly) is very helpful, except one small problem. Like others I cannot get Antreneau (the Elvan in the Rusty Anchor Pub <G-7>) to say anything other than: "All right, now it's time to eat."

Here is what I have done thus far:

The Medicine Woman - Completed
To Cure a Cough - Completed
A Squire's Test - Completed
A Squire's Test II - Completed
***These quests also use the diary at G-6 in Southern San d'Oria)***
A Taste for Meat - Completed
***A quest also involving Antreneau***
Chains of Promathia - Installed

Read Diary at G7 in S. San d'Oria to Page 4 - Completed

I have High San d'Oria fame (unsure how high put I've done dozens of quests in the area not including the ones listed above).

I have also waited through a Region update for this to clear but still I'm getting him saying "All right, now it's time to eat."

Does anyone have anymore information on this quest? I've checked about everywhere I can think and have come up with nothing.

Help Please.

I ran across this quest at cannotlinkto and they say the Moblin Gurneyman in Olton also drops this. I can't confirm it and don't plan to try, but if I had known I'd have gone for both. So I thought I'd post here if it helps at all. I checked up here and someone else says it drops from the Gurneyman.

There's a grand total of 4 Caves:

2 On left slope
2 on right slope.

The Left Cave of the Left Slope leads to the tunnel system inside the mountain which has the ??? to find the map in it.

The Right Cave of the Left Slope leads to the BC area of the ENM there.

The Left Cave of the Right Slope leads to the ??? you trade the item the NPC gives you, in order to enter the ENM area. (Zephyr Fan)

The Right Cave of the Right Slope also leads to the tunnel system where you can Find ??? for map.

As a Hint, before sliding down the mountain, pick which cave you are gonna fall down, and find out where the drop is. (whether it be zoming in really close with map, or aligning yourself with a landmark.)

Walking back up again multiple times sucks, and I still have to do it yet again, bcus i didnt have the damn quest activated after wasting almost 3 hours trying to find the "???". ; ;

The caves you need to land on are nearly impossible to see on the way down. They are both quite close to ground level, so don't give up thinking you missed it.

Try for the upper cave/ledge first, and then drop straight down from there.

I think SE changed the Western Slope since all the pics on this were taken, I start to slide down the southern end of the Western slope going for the ENM Key Item cave and I fall down a hole before i get there. According to these screenshots, their shouldn't be a cave there.. and yes, I'm 100% possitive that I'm falling down the correct side of the correct slope. Also, where the screenshot of the Western Slope on these sights only shows one cave, the map on FFXI-atlas.com shows 2 holes on the western slope, one of which is the one that I keep falling down...

Confirmed. Only the left drop (looking from the top) on the South Side leads here. The left drop from the top on the West Side is ENM item only.

Alright, So it has been confirmed that you must do the Quests "A Taste for Meat" and "Medicine Woman" to activate Page 4? I want to know if this eems right. If so, it should probably be added to the Quest description.
