Description

First talk to Equette (I-9), you should get a cutscene about a sea shell.

After the cutscene travel up to the second floor of the Safehold and locate Anteurephiaux at (J-8). Quest should be in the quest log now.

You are now to travel to (K-12) in Misareaux Coast there should be a ??? at the coast. After examining the ??? a NM Crab named Bloody Coffin will pop (about 3x bigger then other crabs in the area). Its job is RDM, it will cast Regen, Enwater, Paralyze, Haste, and Diaga II. I solo'd as a 75 RDM, it's a toughie, it seems it has a phalanx that can't be Dispeled, also Shell IV (Proven because Spirits Within @ 100% TP only did 37 damage) (Enspells also only did 4-8 add affect).

After defeating it examine the ??? mark again and get a Key item, return to Anteurephiaux at the Safehold now.

After the cutscene with Anteurephiaux, got back to Equett, You recive a Momento Muffler as a reward.

Fighting this bad boy right now an he's a pain in the ***** I suggest going rdm or bard for dispel and subbing whm with a dagger for energy steal. You're gonna have to spam paralyna & erase if you don't keep him silenced.

I just solo'd this thing..
60 rdm/26 nin .. took 1.5 hour

buffed up. protect2 shell2 (last longer) stoneskin, haste, aquaviel, phalanx, 1 tav taco, lots of yaguda drinks.. refresh. shadows and blink when shadows fall.
/sh for assistance..

touched the ???, immediatly cast bind, then silent, then Bio2 and Posion2, gravity when bind wears.. kite to area near safehold zone.
casting gravity/bind only one at a time because <t> will slowly become immune to gravity/bind.. when MP low i bind stoneskin/shadows then convert and cure 4 twice..
when MP low or <t> becomes immune to gravity/bind I cast Sleep2.
/sh for assistance...

i dual wield 2 crimson blade's to cast bio2/posion2/sleep2, and dark staff to rest for mp.
when it awakes i cast Sleep2 again, it wakes up i cast Sleep2 again. now i got full hp/mp. also i noticed that the <t> immunity to gravity/bind is also reset due to its long sleeping..
/sh for assistance...

I repeat the process, i sleep2 Bloody Coffin and rested for mp, and got agrooed by a bugard so i Sleep1 and kite his *** the whole time too.
/sh shout for assistance..

yag drinks (alot of them)
1 tav taco the whole time
bind, buffup, and dbuff
only cast Dispel when <t> cast Regen.
bio2 and posion2
stoneskin/shadows--> blink if shadows fall early,
kite around and around..
cast both gravity/bind/ then Refresh then Convert and cure4 twice or cure3 twice with 1 Regen.
when MP is low and convert is not ready.. i cast Sleep2, shadows, equip darkstaff/rest macro..
make sure bio2/posion2 wears off before u cast sleep2..
after <t> falls to the ground.. run back to ??? and use shadows.. then click on ???..
since it took so long to murder Bloody Coffin with DoT method, he repopped when i Clicked ???.. I got the shell item.. cast Sleep2 and just for fun gravity/bind/slap.. /goodbye and ran back to safehold zone..
/sh I'd like to thank all you ******** that ran by and ignored my /sh for assistance..

the feeling of accomplishment is more rewarding than the damn muffler reward you get...

Chharith..

The guide fails to mention that you must first speak to Leporaitceau (3rd floor, Tavnazian Safehold at J-8) before speaking to Equette, Equette is however the actual quest giver but she won't give you the quest until you speak to Leporaitceau first.

It was actually a very fun fight. I soloed the crab as 70pld/war it misses a lot and you can do some very good initial damage if you get some TP before fighting it. I accidently spawned it looking around and almost lost because I was not prepared, but I ran when i reach red and decided to do it again and kicked the living crap out of it the 2nd time ^_^ not too difficult.
Long but doable

Just duo'd this as a 57 NIN with a THF friend (59). I would say Bloody Coffin has RDM spells, since it use Ice Spikes, Blind, Regen, and Paralyze. We didn't use any buffs or food besides Utsusemi, and we each did only about 6-7 DMG per hit. DEF down will not work, but blind bolts will stick. Although it has quite a bit of HP and DEF, it does have a weakness - its DEF greatly lowers when it is casting. Try to save TP and use WS when it casts Ice Spikes or Regen. The first 3 Blade: Chis did about 30-40 DMG when it wasn't casting, but last one during Ice Spikes did 200+. Good luck with fight and have fun, being paralyzed can make the fight last a {Long time.}

The best part about these Tavnazia quests is that I can be minding my own business, exploring the area, and check a random ??? that I see... then unexpectedly a mob comes out to murder me. >.<

I didn't die... but I also didn't check the ??? to get the quest item... Not that I knew this was for a quest anyway. -_-;

Caught off gaurd, I tried to solo it as a 70BRD/RDM. I only had a stun knife with me at the time, so I never did more than 6 damage/hit. Yeah... I was spamming lschat for help, lol.

Kept double paeon up. The crab has crap for accuracy, but when it did hit, it hit pretty hard. Eventually it started resisting my lullabies and it's accuracy jumped from about 10% to 80%. I woulda been F'd in the A if a 74SMN in my ls hadn't come to help.

Moral of the story: Don't check random ???'s; you'll get crabs...

Just soloed as a 50RDM/25BLM

Buffed up with Protect III, Shell II, Tavnazian taco, then rested to full. Blink, Stoneskin, Aquaveil, rest to full. This is the point where I would normally cast Haste/Enspell/Phalanx/IceSpikes, but since I was going to be kiting and not meleeing, I just hit the ??? to spawn him. He cast paralyze on me right off, but it didn't block any of my attempts to do anything. Cast Gravity on him, then just kited him around in the area between his ??? and the Tavnazia zone, keeping Bio II, Poison II, Burn, Choke, and Shock on him. When Gravity would wear off, I'd cast Bind, and then use Gravity again when that wore off. I also Aspir'd him whenever I had the chance. DoTing him to death like this only took about 15-20 min, and all in all it was really quite easy. He only hit me a few times, so I guess the taco wasn't really necessary. Not only that, but I forgot to equip my Rose Wand +1, so I actually had my sword (Knights Sword +1, no stat bonuses) equipped the whole time; useless, since I wasn't meleeing.

I tried solo kiting him several weeks ago, but when I got his HP down to 50%, he becamse completely immune to Gravity, and so I had to zone to Tavnazia. I did two things differently this time around. 1. Alternated back and forth between Gravity and Bind, in order to not use Gravity too much and thus make him immune to it. 2. I used Burn, Choke and Shock this time, whereas last time I didn't use any of them.

Fought this today as a 62THF/31NIN with my NPC out (Elvaan, level 52 Fierce Attacker w/last Great Katana upgrade). Even without the NPC (or the 75WHM I brought along as backup XD) I could've taken this thing out easy. He has horrible accuracy, and he didn't cast enough for his spells to be that big a threat. At one point my NPC pulled hate with Tachi: Jinpu for normal damage (cuz it was casting) then I hit with Sneak Attack+Dancing Edge also for normal damage (about 650), with a Detonation effect for about 330. Normal melee hits for me were about 5-10 when he wasn't casting, didn't take note how how much when not casting. Dancing Edge did about 300-350 when he was casting, and only about 50-75 when he wasn't. All in all though, very easy fight.
60rdm pwned!

This is soloable by a rdm/blm # level 60. Its slow as ever however. I converted 2 times during fight and was constantly Binding/Sleeping and resting to keep up mp. If i was gonna take him again, I'd eat some Vitality food to help cut down on the mp needed to cure myself.

All in all, he's more annoying than dangerous. However, you can get bored in middle of fight and get owned real quick if you dont keep your buffs up.

Also , Silence, and POISON II are your friends ^^

A BRD with Spirits Within (or any decent Sword WS for that matter) can whoop him. Build TP, wait for him to cast a spell or use an ability, and land it, full damage. Cake if you know what you're doing, hell otherwise ._.
Hard Fight

Just killed it as BRD60/WHM30 with a WHM57/BLM28.
We had to sleep it and rest about 8 times during the fight.. It took about 1 full Vana'diel game day to kill. After 4 or 5 Lullabies it be came immune to them, it would wake up immediatley so we ran to the zone and the WHM Elemental Seal + Sleep.. and it worked so we finished it off using that to rest his MP about 3 or 4 more times during the fight. It was fun even though it kicked our asses down to under 100 HP several times. The WHM finished it off with Firaga and we had to run all the way back to the ???.

We go 0 Exp for all that. So it's under lvl 50..

This guy has Double Attack and his physical attacks have Additional Effect: Paralyze
Uses Diaga II, Bio II, and Ice Spikes a lot too.
He also buffs really fast so its hard for a BRD to keep him debuffed.

I just beat Bloody Coffin as a 63bst/whm. The fight was pretty easy, it took 2 Courier Carrie's to beat him. just make sure your recast timer is close to ready because i had to wait a couple seconds before calling the second and he hit me a few times.. didnt really hurt but his fast attacks would add up fast.
I don't think any of the animals in the area would make very good pets since they are so low compaired to him..

I just fought this guy as a 69/34 rdm/blm. Used up all my mp (down to 34) without a convert. Never lost more than 100 hp throughout the entire fight. I kept myself buffed up (haste, enblizzard, stoneskin, phalanx, protect4, refresh) and him debuffed (bio 2, poison 2, burn, frost, slow, blind, paralyzed, silenced). He will cast a lot of spells and aspir helps refill your bar.

Good luck to you all.
Take a DRK and BLM
# Jun 15 2005 at 7:46 AM Rating: Decent
We did the quest with 4. We had a low to mid 60s PLD tanking with an Earth Staff, me as a DRK (53 at the time, I think) meleeing, a low 50s SMN and a low 50s WHM. The SMN 2hr'd and Shiva's 2hr did less than 100 dmg... My melee shots were effective enough to pull hate off of the PLD a couple of times, but what was most effective were my dark magic related spells. Every Absorb-xxx spell stuck every time. Drain and Aspir were super effective. It was a long fight with only 4 but we still annihilated it. My minimum recommendation would be Mid 60s PLD with Earth Staff as a tank, a mid 50s WHM, DRK, BLM and RDM. I forgot to talk to a couple of people tho so I didn't get my muffler...
very strange mob
# Jun 11 2005 at 4:19 AM Rating: Decent
My and my red mage friend (both of us are lv.64) went head to head with this bugger and made some interesting observations.

I don't recall either of us hitting him for full damage with anything. we both could only do 20 damage tops with our swords. He laughed at my friend's thunder II. Fully loaded spirits within from me did 140 damage. Vorpal did 90 so I went with that after seeing spirits fail.

Here's where it gets even stranger. I pulled hate at one point, he smacked me for 40 damage, the same ammount my friend took at the start of the fight before he had buffs up. So...he did the same damage to both of us, disregarding my far superior defense...

We got no exp indicating he was "too weak" rated.

Very strange mob indeed.

I soloed him as a 69 pld/thf lol. It was kind of a spur of the moment thing(which explains the thf sub) I would've died had I not had a yag drink on me. He got down me to 47 hps. Oh and my spirits within (300tp) did 538. I must have gotten him with buffs down.

Thought I'd post my experience on here even though there's like one post per month XD

Went as 74 RNG cat, sub NIN. Cleared all the crap around it before popping so I could take mah screenies ^^

Right after I popped it, I used Shadowbind and it stuck.. like, for the longest time (grr.. never ever sticks like that). So I just used Slug Shot, Barrage, Slug Shot on the thing. Took it to almost halfway, then it came at me~

I just used Utsusemi when it would cast spells and kept it up. Silly crab missed a whole lot too ^^ Got one critical hit in on me for 116 and I was all o.O Rook just over 200 total hp away. The double-attack wasn't an issue since I think it was drunk.. *miss miss*.. *miss miss*.. *miss miss* :P

Took about 5 minutes and was pretty fun to try. Wish I had used a lower job now ; ;
Easy

Solo as a SAM
# Mar 17 2005 at 9:23 AM Rating: Decent
Solo'd Bloody Coffin as a 73sam/thf - I forgot to change my subjob >.< My advice is to build up your TP to 300% and have your 2hr up. Do gekko > kasha (if you don't have kasha, go yukikaze > gekko) both times to take his hp down significantly; plus gekko will silence him, kasha will paralyze him. I have fought him three times, won each time...I did not know I was supposed to click on the ??? again >.< *sigh* Looks like I will be doing round 4.
easier than i thought

just beat bloody coffin (65rdm/blm), took about as long as an orcish veteran (EP low def), so not really too hard. not even all that much hp, but an impressive amount of DEF, hits weren't doing much more than 10dmg per, w/ enthunder adding anywhere from 2-8dmg on top of that.

never took any damage from shock spikes, but occasionally was stunned by 'em. buffed up w/ my standard solo buffs, pro iv/shell iii, stoneskin/phalanx, appropriate spikes and en-spell, and haste, and debuffed him with my standard set:
blind, slow, paralyze, bio II, and shock (appropriate elemental enfeeble).

he does hit pretty fast, had to dispel the haste he started casting on himself pretty regularly after about 50%hp, and recast slow, re-stoneskin a few times, and had to rebuff w/ phalanx, spikes, en, and haste 3 times, so the fight was at least....5min, iirc

ws's did do more while he was casting, and threw out a thunder II just to see, only hit for 35dmg...so just stuck to melee'ing it. aspir'd when the timer was up, drained when needed, his additional paralyze effect is irritating as hell, had to try recasting stoneskin about 5 times in a row once, but not really too threatening.

helluva lot easier than i thought he'd be

66BLM/WHM (me) and my hubby 64 RDM/BLM did this Punk with ease

Spells did kind of no dmg, so we meleed him to death ^^ Dispelled the **** out of him
fight took 2-3 min I guess
My Sunburst did around 180 and 130 with about 100-130% when I used it

All in all... easy stuff

yeah my friend and i did this last night (both 61 RDM/BLM)
Spammed dispel and silence and just meleed/enfeebled the crap out of it with a couple good magic bursts. between it throwing up shell. Only one of us had to convert. Wasn't bad but at this lvl stay on your toes hehe. Funny thing is we though it would be a drop and didnt think to re-click the ???. DOH! lol so we'll be doing it again. should be fun a second time now that we know the drill. (<Spirits Within> w/ 300TP full HP = 100 damage <No Thanks>)

Soloed it at lvl 61 rdm with blm sub. took almost 30 minutes. had to use convert twice (i had a fresh stoneskin before i converted). Aspir helped a lot. 50 - 60 mp drained every minute. got lucky with drain a couple of time (it used a spell or ability just as drain hit so i drained almost 200 hp that way). i had 28 mp with convert at 1 minute when i won. probably best if you keep bio2 or dia2 to deplete its hp quickly. try to dispel regen and haste.

The best part of Final Fantasy XI is its rich storyline. It separates this game from other MMORPGs. I chose to give my character a storyline that goes along with the game's storyline. I find that this is a more fun way to play the game. Playing the game just to fight in the endgame and collect elite equipment is very boring and is totally missing the main objective of the game, which is to guide your character through the storyline which is to save the world.
