Summary

Sobane has heard some disturbing news from her husband, the head royal chef. She wishes to make a request concerning that tale, but first requires you to bring a "cathedral tapestry" to prove your integrity.

Walkthrough

  • Talk to Sobane in Southern San d'Oria. She'll have a quest for you she wants kept secret... and to prove you'll keep your lips shut she'll want a cathedral tapestry.
  • Get a cathedral tapestry off of Orcish Fighters in Yughott Grotto or Fort Ghelsba.
  • Speak to Sobane.
  • Head to Selbina, where you will find that the person you are looking for is nowhere to be found. Talk to the mayor, and he'll have no idea what you're talking about (liar). He will mention something about a diary he found, and that some key pages are missing... perhaps his lips will loosen if you help him find them.
  • Travel to Ordelle's Caves and hunt for an Ordelle Chest Key. Once you find a key, look for a Treasure Chest and open it. (Only people who have this quest flagged will receive some Torn-Out Pages. Thieves can open the chest and receive the key item using Thief's Tools or Living Key.
  • Return to Selbina and talk to the mayor again. He'll reveal some information to you which Sobane should find interesting.
  • Return to Sobane to complete this quest and to receive your reward.

I don't really know if this quest worths it or not. You have an item which costs 50k by spending 1-2 hrs. When I'm making money, I win more gils by spending the same amount of time and I hope you do too.
But quests are fun and rise your fame ^^

Gils = fish/amphibian organ.
Gil = unit of money in FFXI, both singular and plural.

Hey all Syn here ^^

Ok so I was reading the threads and the quest info here the other day and decide to do this quest. Sounds simple enough right. K.

I get it and head to kill some orcs.......three days I am n that grotto killin things wating for a drop. >.< I am trying combination so of just fighters, fighters and cursemakers, cursemakers only etc. In the process of these three days though I made 10+k offa killin orcs and have stacks of garlic, and other items. So I say to myself fuggid and head back to Sandy. Why is it so hard to get this dang drop. After I sell my Floorplans, garlic and items(total of about 40k) I head to my MH and just for the heck of it check my safe..../sigh. There it is just sitting there. Cathedral Tapestry. I can help but laugh. Good thing is I am up 50k due to my "farming".

Take it to ol girl and head to selbina and then to ordielles. Get the key in like 10 mins then find a chest in like 5 mins, wow finally a streak of luck, lol. Head to selbina then back to sandy where I gets me a Cunning Earring. YAY^^.

From hear I head to Jeuno to see what my new item will bring me and low and behold selling for 20k in the AH.

I decide to hold on to it and see what happenes to the price. A few daays later there are none in the AH, the price has gone up to 40k and there is a shout saying " Cunning Earring DO you have it. Please Can I have it. Reward >>50K<< "

Sent a tell like right away^^.

So all in all I made 103,500gil offa this quest so I'd say it was Totally worth it...and I found a new farmland as well^^ woot

I hate this quest.

I used to visit Sobane all the time because I *loved* the "sharpening my knives" line. Now that I've done the quest, she never says it anymore. ; ;

The reward is soooo not worth that. XD

I got the tapestry doing some odd job way back when. I started seriously hunting the key a few days ago and just coordinated my efforts on the day that RSE was going on in Ordelles, whole chest searching operation took no more than 5 minutes.
This sounds like...

isnt it possible to get money out of a coffer chest? if so (i havent actually tried) you may have opened a coffer chest not treasure chest.

now for my question.. a friend of mine and i are trying to do this. what is the repop on the chest after it is opened? i thought it was 15 minutes but i cant remember. any insight would be appreciated.
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 12 2005 at 8:50 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i have not done this leg of the quest yet but plan to today. you probably did not get your torn pages because IT IS NOT A GARENTEE to get ANYTHING AT ALL out of a chest so for all of our sake please stop acting like a newb and just get another key and try again

I recall having to talk to the mayor twice(maybe 3 times?) before he coughed up any useful information. I suggest you go talk to the mayor a few times, then open the chest again.

If you really wanna play it safe, talk to the woman in Sandy again, then the mayor again.

Whenever talking to a quest NPC, it never hurts to talk to them an extra time to see if they have more information to add. In this case, it seems to be essential.

Did this quest in a matter of 3 hours yesterday and was well worth it, and was very easy :P

I have CoP installed and registered. I had that done before I ever went to get this quest. The tapestry can be found easily off Orcish Fighters and cursemakers. With thf sub it shouldn't take but a few minutes. Then I went to Ordelles' cave and killed a few beetles...boom a key. Ran up to the top and fell down in to chyme room. I believe there are a few chest spawns inside this room by the ledge. The most common chest that I see is in the room where PLD quest part 2 is done. I have lvl 3 Sandy fame and like lvl 1 fame everywhere else. I solo'd this with no problems at all as a 46 DRG/WAR. I don't think the fame has that big of a role as having CoP installed and registered. Took about 2 hours total to finish this quest and was well worth the reward.

I had 5 Sandy fame when I completed this quest (3 when I activated it), I was level 21 (not nearly high enough to do it).

The prerequisites for this quest are pretty undemanding (level 3 fame isn't hard to get if it is even needed).

Yes actually you do need the CoP to aquier the quest just not to get the tapestry. It needs to be installed and registered and your fame needs to be around lvl 7 for San d'Oria. I was Hero Fame without CoP and she told me she was sharpening knives then i installed CoP and instantly got the quest gave her the tapestrey i found without the CoP and went on to Selbina to start the next part. Have yet to try the Ordells caves part.
RE: CoP needed
# Feb 25 2005 at 10:54 AM Rating: Decent
You may need CoP, but your fame does not need to be anywhere around lvl 7. I have lvl 3 fame and I just completed this quest last night. Earring sells for 50k on Leviathan.
Starting Quest

Absolutely do not activate this quest if you need an item from the Ordelle's chest before you intend to finish the quest. You will get the torn out pages and not your RSE pattern or whatever other item you hoped to find on your first try, further attempts will get your desired item.

I tried to do RSE and cried when I got the key item instead of my pattern (and level 50s monopolized the chests most of the time after that).

I was upset until I learned the reward -- a fine thing for my beloved who is a black mage.

I think it's worth 90k on my server (but the price is rising), not shabby.
RE: just to let folks know
# Mar 19 2005 at 4:44 PM Rating: Good
Confirmed. Was doing RSE and got this instead, after a brief "WTF?!" moment, came here to look up torn pages to find this info. Completely forgot I activated this quest a few months back and never finished it. >.> Oh well, I got an earring now at least. lol

...and it was a bit of a pain to do but it was well worth it when I was able to sell the Cunning Earring for 50+k gil!
I did it as a lvl 36 mnk with level 7 fame. Had level 50+ linkshell members help me get the chest key because there was no way I would've been able to solo those stroper chymes myself. Once we got the key the chest was a bit difficult to find so I just decided to go back another day to find it. When I did go back I went to the area where you go to do part 2 of the PLD quest and found the chest.
Hope this information helps someone get this quest done! ^^

Wanted to add that the tapestry was easy to obtain. I had it drop when just randomly killing orcs in Yughott Grotto and I had no idea what it was for until I looked here in the forums. That was the easy part of the quest!

I don't see why you were trying to kill chymes anyways. The Goliath Beetles and regular Stropers will drop a key.

For those who asked, No, the quest is not repeatable. Last night I was helping with someone's mission 2-3 to kill the Sandy dragon and on the way to Horlais Peak we killed orcs for something to do. Got another cathedral tapestry so afterwards I visited Sobane to see if I could activate the quest again. All I got was a long involved cutscene with her and her husband.
Good news is that if you do get the tapestry again you can sell it to merchants for almost 300 gil. I sold mine to Corua in the tent west of the south Sandy AH.

thats wrong. i dont even have pld unlocked and ive done this quest. it seems to be a CoP quest, since it shows carpenter's landing and all. and the cutscenes are cop style.
Couldn't get the quest...

I have lvl 8 fame and CoP expansion but the woman is still sharpening her knives. Any ideas on why it won't activate?

Ok i figured out why it wouldn't lol...
First off, when i installed CoP, i didn't know i had to register it. Even after doing that, I still couldn't get the quest. I figured out i had to reinstall CoP after registration. ^^;;;

Hmmm I need to know what fame, level or otherwise is needed for this quest and the drain quest for that matter. I've done about 12 quests in Sandy, 10 in bastok while doing the last mission of rank 2. Was getting kazham keys and killing dragon, and a tapestry dropped well before a key dropped. But all I get is 'I'm sharpening knives'.

Helping people get Khazam key in Yughott, get the tapestry. "What is this?"

<me> /p Hey guys I need this item
<them> sure, you helped us get the keys.
<me> /p thanks

Go to allakhazam, search for item, go back on game. Talked to Sobane, got the cool CS. When she asked for the tapestry I traded and /laugh at her. I go to selbina, get another cool CS, ask LS for help. Enlist the aid of a 65+ (i forgot what his lvl was exactly) DRK/THF (thf really helps) who was already on his way to the caves. Meet up with him, and let him go on to the deeper parts to kill beetles and w/e. Get the drop within an hour (once again THF rocks for keys) choco to selbina, give the pages, and warp back to san D. Then I talk to sobane again and get my 50k earring (on Ifrit) as well as the gil. Easy money :D

I had a hell of a time soloing this at 38BLM...killed a Golbin Shaman that beat within an inch of my life. The Only thing that aggroed then were beetles, Goblin Shaman and Goblin Furrier. So even at 40 this can easily be soloed

I'd recommend leveling BST to a decent level if you want to solo anything. I was able to solo the key off of goliath beetles as a BST27/WHM13. Guess it's all in the job.

I suppose you do need CoP, since there are references to CoP areas, even though you're not actually required to go to them.

I have Lv.8 Fame in San d'Oria, and I got it; I have CoP installed and registered as well.

The quest itself is easy, just make sure you talk to Abelard before your little chest hunt; I ended up spending an hour hunting just for an amethyst my first time around ><
