Summary

Travonce's final wish before he dies is to reel in "the big one." However, your services are required to protect him from the monsters that lurk below the calm waters of Lufaise Meadows.

Walkthrough

Note: This is an escort quest. You can only have one escort quest active at a time. Other escort quests include Escort For Hire:San d'Oria, Escort For Hire:Bastok, Escort For Hire:Windurst, All By Myself and The Big One.

Start this quest by speaking to Travonce at F-9 in Tavnazian Safehold. He will talk about wanting to catch the "Big One" before he dies. He will ask you to escort him while he fishes. Accept his request.

Next, between 13:00 - 15:00, head to Lufaise Meadows through the southeast exit of Tavnazian Safehold. The first person with the quest activated who zones into Lufaise will receive a cutscene. Then, make sure your entire party is in Lufaise Meadows, and remember your party will be capped at level 45. After the cutscene, make sure your entire party is in Lufaise Meadows before talking to Travonce again.

Talk to Travonce and he will begin moving. He will stop on the bridge and fish up his first notorious monster. Kill it, then wait for him to move -- click on him to make him move again.

Next, Travonce moves toward the sea. Escort him there, killing orcs and bugards that aggro. You can cure Travonce if he takes damage.

Now Travonce is in his second position. Rest HP and MP when he starts fishing, because he usually catches an item before catching the next notorious monster. When the NM appears, kill it and wait. He then continues to fish. Eventually, Travonce says something about catching the Big One and he pulls up another notorious monster. Kill it and get ready to move again.

Travonce will head towards the lake to the north; move with him, clearing the orcs on the way. He is now at the final spot. He'll catch several items and a total of three notorious monsters before catching "The Big One." The Big One is a flesh NM called Nakki. Kill it.

After Nakki is dead, talk to Travonce and he will give you a Completed Certificate (Key Item). Return to Tavnazian Safehold and speak to Travonce at F-9 to receive your reward.

Finally had a chance to do this…. Great fun.

Didn’t see any posts on this below so I’m sorry if I repeat any info.

1. Unlike the other escorts like Crawlers Nest and Garliage, Travonce does not stop when you speak with him. We went in and our game plan consisted on getting the npc to stop when we needed him to. If there’s a way to get him to halt we could not find one.

2. The actual fished up nm’s are cake… even the doomed type. For us the biggest challenge was from the Orcs and Buggards. If you don’t have an outside source killing a path you’ll find your group split up handling agro from the local mobs and fished up nm’s at the same time.

3. Weather effects happen a lot. The last area he fishes in is right by an elemental spawn.

4. After your quest is done the lvl cap is lifted immediately. If you’re at a high lvl it’s a great opportunity to get rid of that elemental that’s been killing your group.

Can I do this solo as a 75 pld/whm? I figure I could just train everything without much problem. Earth staff + jelly ring would help too so I don't know.

That'd work great, except for the above mentioned level 45 cap that gets placed on you. ><

Is there any way to deactivate this quest...? I want to do the bastok one every week but this quest is active and I really don't have the people to do this one.. :P (I play on JP time, usually as an anti-social bst)

If I let myself lose, will it become deactivated?

did this tonight with some LS members.

Setup:

BST/WHM (me)
DRG/BLM
SAM/THF
and 36 PLD/WHM (ghetto WHM)

It was pretty easy until he moved from second fishing point to third and aggroed 3 orcs and a buffalo. Then proceded to fish up 4 NMs back to back.

We won. Courier Carrie could hit the NMs for 50-120 damage so she was a good tank. We even ended up aggroing a thunder elemental at the end.

He fished up 4x rusty subligar and that was it.
Gonna try it again some other time.
Wish it gave a big XP scroll and not Dragon Chronicles for how difficult it was.
Clearing up logging this quest
# Oct 15 2005 at 11:40 PM Rating: Default
If you can't get this quest, check your quest log to see if you have an open Escort quest from any another area. If you have any of the Escort quests open, you can not get another one from any other area. Either complete the open quest or go to the start NPC for it and clear it.

When I first entered Tavnazian (just finished 3rd Promy) I ran around getting quests. Another person from my Promy party also was zoned there. I could not get the quest because I have not finished "All By Myself" quest from Bastok. The other guy did get the quest. It was the second quest he logged in Tavnazian, none completed there, so you do not need to complete any quest there before you get it.

When the NPC approached the second fishing spot on the beach, he yelled that he fished up a severed head - it was in fact a Mannequin Head, and like all other items he fishes up, you're able to lot on it.

I have both The Call of the Sea and this quest flagged, so that can't be the problem. The problem I'm having is that when I zone out to the area between 13-1500 he's NEVER there. What am I doing wrong? u_u

If you can't get this quest, the reason is simple. You are only allowed one current escort quest in your quest log at once, similar to Eco-Warrior.
This includes Escort for Hire (Sandy), Escort for Hire (Windurst), Escort for Hire (Bastok), All by Myself (Bastok) and The Big One (Tavnazian Safehold). What I don't know is whether you are limited to one a week (as with Eco-Warrior) or not. If you can't get this quest, you have to cancel the other quest.
Regarding your specific problem, I have no idea. Are you absotutely sure you're doing the right exit? Taking the SE exit from the northern end of Tavnazian Safehold? When we started this, we had to zone in and out a couple of times.

One more note... when we did the Crawler's Nest Escort quest, someone else had zoned into the nest and started the quest. We had to pull a scorpion to the entrance and have it aggro and kill the NPC. We had to zone and come back in.

Perhaps the same thing is happening here. Perhaps someone else zones before you and starts it? Even if they ignore the NPC, it's possible that you might not be able to find him. I could be wrong here, but it's worth checking out. Zoning right at 13:00 should solve that problem, I would think.

If that doesn't work, you might have to be in a party. If that still doesn't work, I have no idea. Hopefully my posts gave you some idea what to try, though.

Caps you at 45 I assume? Could you not have another person slay all the non-NMs for you?

yes, capped at 45, you could have someone clear the non-NMs, but rcs and stuff arn't usually that hard, that one person u have outside the party would be better off helping you IN party so he can fight the NMs also. unless u want to be safe.

un-capped people cannot Cure capped members, and cannot affect the NMs in any way.

yeah, its me Redfury.
this quest IS repeaable as i just got it again, i would probably say once a week. I did it with 6 decently equipped people and it was EZ, with 4 its probably still pretty easy, but sometimes nm pops can come fast.

and as for not being able to flag it? i don't know, one guy that was with us had the same problem. im a hero in windy, and i dont have the rivern site quest, only 2 things different from what you said.

this is a great quest to do, just get a steady 4 people that are willing to do it each week. its great.
Why can't I flag it?
# Dec 22 2004 at 2:56 PM Rating: Decent
I have talked to this NPC probably 10 or 11 times, and I still cannot get him to give me the quest. He just sighs over and over instead. I have max fame in all areas except for Windurst, and I doubt that would affect my ability to flag the quest. I am also on the Riverne Site #A 01 mission, so if anyone can give me some insight on how to get him to give me the quest, it would be much appreciated ˆˆ

# Jan 09 2005 at 5:31 PM Rating: Decent
I've flagged The Call of the Sea and The Big One at the same time, I think you just have to talk to some more NPCs before you can actually activate it. I've completed a fair amount of quests, however, I haven't done this one yet (completed, I should say, I tried to solo it and Travonce died, I didn't know what I was up against XD) but I'm sure you only have to talk to more NPCs.
RE: Why can't I flag it?
# Dec 24 2004 at 2:39 AM Rating: Decent
I'm having the same problem. It seems that if you have the quest "The Call of the Sea" flagged then you can not accept this quest. However, i have yet to complete the above mentioned quest, so I can not as of yet verify if this is the problem. What I can tell you is I have friend that have flagged and completed "The Big One" that can not flag "The Call of the Sea"....so, I'm lost.

I have completed "The Call of the Sea" quest but can still not activate this one...

I've also completed every other quest that I could find in the Tavzanian Safehold (Unforgiven, A Bitter Past, A Hard Day's Knight) and can't find any more.

Wonder if you have to complete a certain number of CoP missions to activate it? I'm only on 2-3 (the minotaur one) so far.

*EDIT* According to http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshell/comments/The+Big+One you can't flag it if you have any other escort quest active. I have the Bastok one active so that would explain it. ><

I was doing this Quest last night by myself (SMN45) and got to the last spot before the NPC died. Had I any juice on my person, I may of been able to win. Either way, it's not a horrible quest to do, especially if with several other people.
