Battle Notes

In order to enter the battlefield you will need to bring a Moon Orb, which is obtained by trading 60 Beastmen's Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno. When you are ready, trade the Moon Orb to the Burning Circle inside Balga's Dais and choose to enter the battle Wild Wild Whiskers.

Your party will be deleveled to 60 when you do this encounter. Your party may consist of 3 members. You have 15 minutes to defeat your enemy. You will be fighting a coeurl called Macan Gadangan that casts Thundaga, Thundaga II, and Burst, and uses all the normal Coeurl weaponskills. However, it has a few new WS. Macan Gadangan has an ability called Frenzied Rage, which seems to be something like a Meditate skill, as it would follow up with a WS almost instantly after. Usually, after Frenzied Rage, it would follow up with a WS called Charged Whisker that is AOE, and does lightning damage that did 480 damage on average to Courier Carrie. It also can use a WS called Pounce that is single target and seems to be physical damage. That WS did 400 damage to Courier Carrie. As a 60 BST with something like 220 defense and 50 VIT, Macan Gadangan did 120 damage a swing to me on average.

Strategies

The best party for this BCNM is Nin, Whm, and a DD preferably with /THF.

Buff up and first thing the Whm does is Silence once and when it wears don't silence again now all that Macan Gadangan will do is cast Burst and melee which makes this bcnm a cakewalk for this trio

Hey... i want to do this BCNM for the penitent rope, im not dishing out 3.3mil (bahamut) for one, can a RDM/BLM, PLD/WAR, BLM/WHM do this??
easy
# Dec 23 2005 at 2:59 PM Rating: Good
Just finished this bcnm and got the rope 2/3 times with:

jobs:
war/nin
mnk/nin
whm/blm (me)

Buffs:
Protect 3
Shell 3
Haste on war (main tank)
Reraise2 (just in case)

Go in and let the war start tanking. Whm use ele staves and slow & paralyze. Once the cat starts to cast, silence.
Usually burst mode is 2nd thing it casts so you won't have to silence it multiple times.

Let the war and the mnk kill it while whm does regen, stona, paralyna, silena (depending on the move the cat does) a couple of cures and the thing is dead.

He didn't aoe until one burst was paralyzed so if you don't want to paralyze that will be ok but make sure slow sticks. my enfeebling sill is maxed so I didn't have a problem with that.

I hope this was somewhat helpful! Good luck and happy killing!
Manageable, but never underestimate

We went 3/3 on this with 2 penitent's ropes dropping.

Nin/War (me), Whm/Blm, Brd/Whm

Charged Whisker is strong AoE damage and removes all shadows. As Ninja, I made sure to stay on top of Blind, Slow, & Paralyze. I had to cast each 2x per fight to last the entire duration, with Paralyze maybe 3-4x. The Paralyze effect kicked in pretty often and it was the most noticeable of the enfeebles I used. It used Charged Whisker at least 2x each run, which is very annoying because immediately after you are vulnerable to being hit and any ninja knows how hard it can be sometimes to get shadows back up when you're getting hit. That being said, with enfeebles on it, I didn't have to be "perfect" with my Utsusemi cycles; my Nin could evade and parry a reasonable number of attacks. When it casts Burst, you get 17 seconds of recast-free bliss.

I'd say it's a pretty easy fight, but you should never underestimate a fight, especially when 60 seals are involved. Overconfidence in this game leads to too many mistakes and a sloppy Nin or Whm will lead to death.

The Ninja's role is to blink-tank and "solo" the mob, just like you would expect from this party setup. I requested madrigal and minuet from bard, since Coeurls tend to be high evasion.

The hardest job is probably that of the WHM. You really need to pay attention to your status ailments and be fast removing them. Stona, Paralyna, & Silena are all necessary for Petrificative Breath, Blaster, & Chaotic Eye respectively. Keep your distance from the enemy and don't stand behind the tank or you risk having Petrify on both the tank and the Whm. You may want to throw in the occasional Flash if your Nin is having trouble keeping shadows up.

I haven't considered how an all BST or all SMN party would do in this. But if you choose a more conventional party, I'd say WHM is the most essential job in this BCNM, simply for Stona. You'll want some sort of tank with Utsusemi, preferably Ninja, because evasion kicks in pretty well and it's easier to keep shadows up when you can use both Utsusemi spells. The third party member is really there to fit in and I'm not sure it matters what that job is if you have Nin & Whm, just make sure that person's job doesn't distract from the main idea of the Nin soloing it with Whm support (i.e. steal hate from the Nin). Only job I wouldn't recommend would be a 2nd Whm. With 2 Whm, the Ninja may not be able to do enough damage within the time limit on his own.

With my party, we won in around 8-9 minutes each run, allowing for full buffs, reraise 2 casting, and full MP resting before beginning.

With all the good posts on this BCNM, one would expect this to be an easy and rewarding fight. One would be foolish.

Using a NIN/WHM/MNK setup, I attempted this battle four times. Ironically, both of my orbs were the two that we failed on. <Goodbye> 120 Seals. But, I'm sure no one really gives a damn about my personal loss, as this game is only filled with greed and egocentrism anyway.

Point being: don't be jaded into thinking this battle is simple. Things can go wrong easily, even with intelligent party members (which I had).

I would not recommend a Monk as they pull far too much hate--even with a good Ninja--and thus easily get themselves casted on or killed. Red Mage would work best as White Mage tends to lack MP if the Ninja desires Haste (recommended) and needs occasional curing (happens to the best).

On another note, while Pergatory's recommendations are appreciated, I agree: let's stop referring to him as "sage." He may or may not deserve the title, but he's by far not the only sage. :)

Edit:

I'd love to know why someone(s) found it necessary to rate me down due to this post. It was honest and informative. I could understand well if it made no sense, but it's a reasonable post. It might not be the greatest, but it is far from poor.

Disagreeing with someone's opinion is not a reason to rate them down. If you honestly think my post was a waste of space and helped no one, then fine, rate me down. But, don't do it just because you don't like what I say.

Fortunately, since I'm leaving this sad excuse for a game anyway (due to repeated SE failures culminating with the events noted above), I shouldn't really care what certain fools rate me. Nevertheless, I do like to maintain my reputation, whether or not I plan to ever return. So, anyone who wants to balance out this post's rating is more than welcome to. I just find it sad that people have no concept of the rating system's purpose. Thank you,

Uberwoober

someone rnadomly invited me to do Wild Wild Whiskers BCNM.. I grabbed an orb and went. Nin/war, blm/whm, and whm/blm (me).

I went in elemental seal + silence. ninja voked it and took it to the middle. Blm did stun + minor nukes. I only buffed and stona ninja. The cat would have an emote .. something about it's whiskers twitching or something. It would use burst after that. After burst it would use a petrifying attack and ninja would just move away and it would say that he was too far away. If he didn't make it I'd stona.

Very easy stuff. We did one orb for blm and one for me. We both got rope, teleport ring, and adaman ore. Best BCNM I ever did seeing as how I've never had more than 400k at one time until now.

me a ninja and whm did this bcnm 3 times and we got no rope.... it was easy fights first one was a bit rougher but then we got the way ... ninja almost died of burst a couple of times oh by the way i was rdm ... and it was cheap since no one @ to buy drinks and my enfeebles could stick pretty nice... it took about 12 minutes each fight.... i could use a nuke a couple of times and i was fighting also with my sword... it was pretty cool!

No offense, but you had a terrible ninja. And terrible luck. :p

We just did this 5 times, 5 ropes. Twice as war war whm, and three more times as nin war whm.

The war war whm runs were hit or miss. Much longer fights because it wasn't as organised, we spent a lot of time trading hate and casting utsu:ichi. We had to bene the first time, which I would say was our miss. Broke out the ninja at this point for the next 4 runs then came back as warrior for the last (note: I have two characters).

nin war whm runs went very smoothly. I rarely took any damage. And the only damage I did take was from the aoe thunder attack he does, or because he petrified me and double attacked my last shadow before stona hit. I kept it hojo'd while whm casted para at the start of the fight. With this set up we ended up doing chi>rampage. Fights lasted around seven minutes. We could've been faster, but for some reason we liked to full buff then let whm full rest before we went in. Not like he needed his mp.

Sorry, but I can't think of any excuse for a ninja to be taking bursts from this thing. You can easily cast an utsu:ichi with time to spare before burst goes off.

pld/nin, whm, blm too easy
# Aug 08 2005 at 7:55 PM Rating: Decent
I did this bcnm 3 times and won easily with pld/nin, whm, and blm. pld/war just takes too much damage and wastes so much mp to cure. If you are a pld and want to do this bcnm, go with pld/nin.

After you and your pt buff up, have whm cast silence on the mob right away. this makes the mob use burst after the silence wears. Don't cast utsusemi till the mob is casting burst. you will have enough time to cast it meanwhile. If you use utsusemi before the mob casts burst, you most likely don't have enough time to recast utsusemi and recieves too much damage. he does burst alot, so use utsusemi only when it bursts. pld/nin can still take hate even the blm nukes. pld can use sushi to increase accuracy to gain more tp to get hate too. i used tavnasian taco for def, but sushi works fine too. prefer dorado sushi for the +3 enmity. I never lost hate for this. If you don't have enough time to beat on time, have pld and blm 2 hr and kill it quickly. if pld loses hate, cover and spam cures on blm.

have blm nuke everytime you flash and do weapon skill. when i did vorpal blade, i did about the same damage as blm's stone 3. great for hate. Make sure the whm has the stona macro ready since it does petrify.

We beat this in about 7-8 mins and got penitent twice. Thanks Yulala (whm) and Omegaman (blm). so long you utsusemi the burst, this is one of the easiest bcnm you can do.

Did this with a couple friends the other night. We were a PT of Nin, Rng, and Whm. Everything was running quite smoothly until we entered what seemed a streak of bad luck. The NM had ~20% life left and felt it necessary to do 3 Thundaga II's in a row, each averaging ~700 dmg to the ninja (with Shellra and Barthundra up). It was impossible to heal that much damage so quickly without taking hate as the whm. Unfortunately after the ninja fell there really wasn't much that the ranger and me could do alone.

I guess I'll have to wait to save up another 60 seals to get even, but I just though I'd let everyone know that things can turn ugly very quickly in this BCNM.

Yea the guide below from Sage is excellent, we won both times we fought using this strategy, although we were 0/2 on the penitent's rope >.< both times we got a gleeman's belt which sells for 6k ....Kind of dissapointing but if you are going to try this Sage's guide is spot on. Rate up

Did this last night for my rope. I followed the guide and everything went smooth except when we won we had 5 seconds left till 15min O.o. We got the rope and 140k in other drops that I gave to the WHM and NIN.

My advise to RDMs is to use all your DOT spells, Poison II, Choke, Frost, Drown, and Dia II is what I used. Your spells don't hardly do crap against the mob but my idea would be to get him into burst mode, cast all enfeebles and DOT spells, Convert. This way if you can do this with in the first 3 min of the fight your convert timer should be back up 2 min before time is up and you can chainspell convert and nuke him for the rest. Had I not rested a few ticks for extra mp to nuke with, we would not have one. The nin was 74 so maybe he didn't have the best weapons for a lvl 60 nin and thats why it took so long.

Not all of these mobs are the same. Some times you will get the hard one who loves to cast AOEs like the thunderagas But in the 2 times ive done this mob my pt got the easy one that only casts burst. We were 1/2 one this mob, got the penitents rope the first time on the nin's orb then he passed on every thing by accident and all of our loot disapeared. On my orb we lost because the mob cast burst on the nin when her blink spell was off, and the whm cast a big cure spell and ened up getting petrified

And nope i dont think a smn can solo this...

I've used this strategy at least 20 times, probably more like 30. It does not lose unless someone screws up (NIN messes up Utsusemi recast or something like that).

The optimum party setup is NIN/WHM/???. The ??? can be any job, literally. It doesn't matter as long as you stick to the strategy I give. I've won this BCNM with NIN60/WHM60/RDM44. I also won when we had NIN60/WHM60/PLD60 and the PLD died almost immediately and we didn't Raise him because I needed every drop of my MP.

The BCNM is against a single Coeurl type mob. He has the normal Coeurl attacks: Blaster (Paralyze) and Chaotic Eye (Silence). He also has Petrificative Breath (Petrify) which he uses very often (95% of the time), and Charged Whisker which deals a lot of AOE lightning damage. He usually uses Charged Whisker once per battle, although I've seen him use it twice in a battle before. Usually Charged Whisker happens near the beginning of the battle. Make sure your WHM has a macro for casting Stona, Silena, and Paralyna on the NIN.

He casts Thundaga, Thundaga II, Thunder II, Thunder III, and Burst. Before he casts, you will see the message "Macan Gadangan's whiskers begin to twitch violently" that means he is going to cast. He chooses one spell to cast each fight, and sticks to that spell for the rest of the fight. He is easy to Silence, and once Silenced he will switch the spell he casts to Burst (although you'll have to wait for Silence to wear off first). This is a good thing if you have a NIN tank because Burst is not AOE and it takes forever to cast.

That being said, this is the key strategy to winning the BCNM. Enter the battle and buff up. Have the NIN engage and have everyone else stand back because AOE can be very nasty. This is usually the point where he uses Charged Whisker very early on and it eats through Utsusemi so have your WHM ready to heal him and possibly Flash the mob so the NIN can recast.

Once his whiskers twitch and he starts casting, see what spell he casts. If he's not casting Burst, Silence him and let the melees move in. He may still do a Charged Whisker at this point so keep the mages back for now. Once he is casting Burst, it's safe for even the mages to move in and melee. In fact it's encouraged and more fun. :D

Once you get him in Burst mode the fight is a breeze. It goes like this.

He casts Burst. DO NOT INTERRUPT HIM. Don't Stun, don't Silence. Let him cast while you wack at him. (Attacks will not interrupt him.) Immediately after casting Burst, he will do Petrificative Breath and petrify your tank, so make sure the WHM has Stona ready. He will then melee a few times and go back to casting Burst again. Rinse and repeat. That's all there is to it. The only tough part of the battle is in the beginning when he isn't doing his Burst cycle and is rather unpredictable. Also, every once in a while (every few battles) he will throw a Chaotic Eye or Blaster into the mix right after Burst, instead of doing Petrify. Odds are he will just stick to Petrify though.

His behavior is so predictable that you can even have the WHM start resting after casting Stona. The mob will go into its Burst cycle and the WHM can regain 1 or 2 ticks of MP. Once the cast is complete make sure the WHM gets up fast to cast another Stona. That's it. Easy huh?

Odds for getting Penitent's Rope seem to be about 50/50 if you don't get the rope, you'll get Gleeman's Belt instead.

I would like to add my deepest thanks to the write-up you had made for this BCNM fight. With your assistance I was able to complete this BCNM fight on the very first try, full-well knowing what was coming at me, and how to deal with it. It provided enough knowledge for me to lead a fight I had not seen the like of before. It made it incredibly simple.

To sum it up, the silence on this NM is like a lightswitch. It starts by casting some random thunder-based spell. Then you silence it, and that flips the switch to casting AM burst only. With a NIN to take the damage with shadow (and dish it back out while waiting for the attack), and a WHM, this is very possible.

Stoneskin and distance are of particular help in this fight. The charged whisker attack is AoE, and does not assist your WHM in conserving MP if they have to heal you. I would not advise being in melee range if you are not a melee. Charged Whisker can happen anytime. And more than once.

As a BLM, I was able to add a lot to this fight as well. Stone-based damage spells were going for about 50% resist, but still doing signifigant damage. Add that I was able to assist in curing when a melee attack got through, and it was no problem. I would think any mage as a third person is a great asset to this fight when going for a first time. /rdm or /whm will assist the main WHM conserve MP if your NIN must let an attach through.

Let an attack through? Yes, it seemed that it was to the NIN's benefit to let some attacks though. Burst had a decent wind-up time. So to guarantee that the NIN had shadows up, it was good to let an extra attack through as needed. Future runs would lead to better timing, and the lack of this effect being beneficial, but it was useful for a first time run.

So again, thank you so much for a write-up that simplifed this fight to something managable. Me and my new -3 Enmity thank you!

Hi there... I'm very interested in this strat... but I don't have any NIN friends ^.^; My question is... how long does it take for it to cast burst, and how long in between bursts? I'm wondering if a PLD could use a blink band to absorb the bursts and otherwise tank normally.

Oh man, you were so right with this strategy. It took a lot of convincing, but after a couple of weeks of begging I got 3 others to go with me to do this BC. NIN, WHM, me as BLM and another BLM.

Your strategy was right on the money. Once it was silenced, he went right to Burst mode.

Oh and the NIN was OWNING him with enfeebles. Paralyze made it so much easier to beat this.

We tried 4 times (one for each member) and your odds were right on too. 2 Ropes!! So now @ 75 I finally got a Penitent's Rope and have my Heierarch Belt for resting.

This belt will come in handy as I plan to lvl all mage jobs sooner or later to 75.

Use this strategy folks! Nice job Pergatory!

So a couple of people from my LS decided after some prodding to make a few runs at the cat. We ended up 3/4 on it, and with the exception of the first fight, things went smoothly. I was hoping to shed a bit more light on this BCNM as there doesn't seem to be a whole lot on the stategy, so here goes.

PT setup was NIN/WAR WHM/SMN(extra mp never hurt) and BLM/WHM. We would buff up, our NIN would meet the thing in the middle, and the mages would stay on the ramp. I (blm) would lead with ES+ silence which would stick, but probably only for 30 seconds or so. After the silence wore, it was probably at 85%hp, and I threw out a frosp/rasp/drown to help with eva and DOT is never a bad thing. BTW for the BLM who want to try this, it has thousands of mp, so asipr away. Anyway, the thundaga and thundaga II weren't much of an issue, as after our first fight, it rarely used AOE stuff, but being lightning based, it will resist stun.

So, basically, the nin would spam hyoton and the elemental stuff, I would alternate between stoneIII and stone II, and the whm would just be the healing wench with barthundra, stona, paralyna, and the occasional cure. The fights were not the fastest, 12-14 min with the record of 5:26 being set somehow on seraph, but they were steady. It spams burst, so with the shadows it wasnt a big deal at all. It dropped a belt with each win (gleeman once :( penitent twice :0) in addition to a hermes quencher. The random items were
icarus wing(2)
mea ring (2)
adaman ore(2)
random rocks(yellow, green, etc)
3 hq couerl hides
and the best part 5000 gil o.O

Being a blm and therefore being biased towards them, it pains me to say that a rng/whm/nin party would probably do better. It seemed to have shell on the whole fight, and while I was rarely resisted, stone III with an earth staff was doing an average of 250 dmg with blizzagaII doing around 370ish. I even tried throwing out burn a couple of times to see if that would help, and the difference wasn't really noticeable.

This is not as hard for a pld to tank as some people make it out to be. A pld has to kite the NM around the arena. If your pld kites the mob around then when the NM stops to cast burst the pld can easily run out of range. You are going to need either blm or rng for DD because, for one, they have to damage the mob while its being kited (which any melee DD would have a tough time doing), and two, they wont be in aoe range which will save the healer a lot of mp.

I just did 7 successful fights and we didnt lose once. We got very lucky quite a few times and just barely avoided losing but I would have to say this is not a hard bcnm if you have three good players who know what they are doing. If luck wasnt on our side we might have lost a few of those. I got a walkures mask for my war and my two friends got their penitents belts along with a few extra things that I got to sell by myself because my prize was 200k...and thier prizes were 800k lol. We did it with pld, whm, and blm.

EDIT: Heres a few tips for anyone who wants to do this with a pld tank. First, tell your pld to kite the NM in the back part of the arena (furthest away from where you zone in at) and when it casts burst have him run back to where you zone in at. That seemed to work best for me. Two, tell your whm to watch for when the NM casts burst and when it does, he should cast stone skin, cure the pld up all the way, then get his highest cure ready on the pld just in case the burst hits him. I was able to survive the 3 bursts I got hit with because I am a galka with 1400+ hp at 60 and because I imediately got hit with a cure
IV after each one (thats how we got lucky >.<). Three, an earth staff and a bunch of +hp gear will help your pld out a lot. I used full AF (+71 hp), my rse belt (+20 hp), shield earrings (+10 hp each, dont have enough for pigeons >.<), two demons rings (+10 hp each), a republic mantle (+6 hp), and an earth staff (-20% physical dmg taken, +15 against lightningt) and a lightning bow (+6 against lightning).

Hi, Kingleopold from Alexander here, 63WHM/31BLM. I and two people I had never even partied with before did this today. We are 1/2. Did two runs, lost the first and won the second time. It was an ideal party I guess: WHM, NIN, RNG

Here's what we did right: the rng stayed back with me and this saved me a lot of MP. He could do ranged attacks while avoiding the Thundaga spells so I didn't have to cure him and he didn't have to waste time casting Utsusemi. NIN did a great job tanking. Hardly let Utsu drop and he kept hate very well. WHMs remember not to let Regen 2 or Haste drop. Also Barthundra. It didn't kick in too often in the first battle but it was a life-saver. Save Elemental Seal + Silence for when it starts casting Thundaga II later in the battle. It'll shrug off Silence soon enough but you'll have stopped one or two Thundagas. It never got off Burst (was always interrupted) so if you still have ES, use it to silence. If you've used ES, just spam Silence and hope it sticks or someone (probably RNG or NIN) interrupts the casting. Also, Paralyze it. Maybe it was just luck, but Paralyze kicked in pretty often. No one used 2 hours on the second run (I used Benediction during the first) so it's very possible to win without.

Other than that, not much that you can't figure out from a WHM viewpoint. Have Stona ready at all times (macro even), drink juice (I used two melons each run), eat food (I ate a rolanberry pie to give myself +50 MP or so). Remember to rest to full after buffing when you go in. It took all my MP to win; I recommend resting every time you can.

Things I could have done better: as a Hume WHM with full AF and pie, I had about 670 MP with light staff equipped. I ran out of MP toward the end even with the juice and constant resting. Thus, bring Hi-ethers. At least one per run I'd guess. Bring more if you're really concerned about MP.

List of drops:
Penitent's Rope (wish I could keep it but we agreed to sell and split money)
Adaman Ore
Mea Ring
Icarus Wing
Mithril Ingot
Hermes Quencher
3x H.Q. Couerl Hide

Thanks so much to Evensteven and Megacruise. Great guys, great players. Trusted me to sell items and split earnings.

Hope someone is helped by my experience. ^^

EDIT: You can't buff to full after buffing ><

Evensteven here. I was an easy 400k ^^. Just follow Kingleopold advice and victory is yours. Remember to have the Rng, or Blm to stand back with the whm to avoid thunderaga if not you'll suffer the same fate we did in our first attempt. The whm should have plenty of mp with food to cure a one on one battle with a Ninja, but add a Rng to the mix and your mp will run out before you take down the beast. Plus i found having the Rng stand back helped me hold hate better. Thanx again Kingleopold and Megacruise you guys, and girls ^.~ are awesome ppl.
